Switch chapters in QuickTime

Hi
When you rip a movie with Handbrake it rips it so it contains chapters which is of course very nice - if I could switch between them. I can do this in iTunes, but I don't seem to be able to do this in QuickTime or Frontrow. Can I do this? Do I need QT Pro?
Thanks...

Wait, it exports as .mp4 by default right? Try .m4v as an extension. I'll go get my old files on my external drive to see what I did if that doesn't work.
iTunes only plays files well if they've been encoded properly. Anything that requires the installation of something extra (Perian, Flip4Mac) means that a little ease of playing a file on the front end will be exchanged for difficulty on the back end (when you want to use the file on an iPod or AppleTV). I bought VisualHub awhile back and now, anything QuickTime can't play, I convert it to QuickTime and throw away the .flv, .wmv, etc. In most cases, the files aren't of excellent quality anyway, so the re-compression artifacts just mix in with the other artifacts that are already there. And, for me at least, it's a small price to play to have all my media in a QuickTime format.

  • Switch between multiple quicktime movies on a single page

I want them to play in a single window but use clickable links to switch between .mov files. I am working in DW CS5.

It depends on the code you are using to play the movies but it could be done with javascript.  Although unless you are streaming the Quicktime movies, like a youtube, you will be forcing the user to download all the movies to load the page.  If they are not setup to stream then you might want to load a separate page for each movie.  If you show us the code you are currently using to play the movie we can help you through the process.

  • Adding Chapters in Quicktime X

    Hi all
I'm trying to add chapters to a video of mine. I've tried following this tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/chaptertracks.html
but it it appears to have been written for the old Quicktime 7 Pro. As such, I cannot open a text file, as it says in the article.
Would I be right in saying that Quicktime X has replaced both Quicktime 7 Player and Quicktime 7 Pro? Or is the pro version of Quicktime 7 still superior to Quicktime X?
    Very confusing...
    Thanks,

If you are referring to track, layer, masking, merging, scaling, and/or similar operation, then QT 7 Pro is still the only real choice at this software level.

  • Creating Pauseable Chapters in Quicktime Movies

I want to create basically what iWork outputs, a quicktime movie that pauses at certain points and starts again after you click on it.
I already have the animation (created in Motion) but i want to add the functionality to pause at certain points and startup when i click on it or press the spacebar.
I dont know if ill have to use 3rd party, but if so thats OK, I just need it to work like that. Im pretty new at this so please explain in easy words.
    Thank you...

Have you tried bringing the animation file into Keynote to add those "pauses"?
My "guess" is that Keynote uses "sprite tracks" for the play/pause feature. You could use QuickTime Pro to "Extract" the sprite track and add it to a "selection" of your animation.
Lots of trial and error, I suspect.

  • How do I turn off timed screen switching?

While showing a video in class (Quicktime - full screen - mirrored desktop to projector) the screen switches away from Quicktime (to the Finder screen I think). This happens repeatedly at 9:00 AM so I'm assuming it is somehow tied to an event.  I do have a 9:00 AM event in my calendar and BusyCal but it doesn't have an alarm turned on.
I have tried to address this with Notifications. I turning on Do Not Disturb between 8:45 AM and 11: and also put a check in the box for "when Mirroring."
Any suggestions for how I can keep the screen from switching away from the Quicktime movie?

At the risk of being super--obvious, can I suggest you try turning off those 9am events and see if that solves the problem?  If you are busy watching a movie at that time, any event notification probably isn't going to help you anyway.  I realise you may not wish to delete that (presumably recurring) event but at least then you will know if the event is causing the problem.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is it possible to put a photo overlay on top of a QuickTime movie?

Is it possible to put a photo overlay on top of a QuickTime movie?
Here's what I want to happen...... Once the QT arrow controller is clicked, then the overlay photo would disappear and the QT movie would play.
I tried to put the QT movie file in a table then place a photo as the background image, but it didn't work.
Anyone know how this can be done?

    Easy using QuickTime Pro.
Size the image file to the dimensions of your QuickTime file.
Open the image with QuickTime Pro.
Select all (Command-a) and Copy (Command-c).
Switch to your QuickTime .mov file. Place the controller at the first frame.
Paste (Command-v) and Save As (self contained).
To give your still image file a bit of "time" add it (scaled) to a few seconds of audio and then "extract" the new video track.

Oh, and make sure the Final Cut Studio color compatibility setting (I forget exactly what it is called) is switched on in QuickTime Preferences.

  • QuickTime hijacks file type

I want to associate text files ending with .sml with the Aquamacs Emacs application. If I bring up the info panel on just such a file, and try to use the "Change All..." button, the "Open with:" selector immediately switches back to QuickTime.
I can associate an individual file with Aquamacs via the "Always Open With" checkbox in the "Choose Application" dialog box, but that association only applies to that file, and occasionally switches back to QuickTime under circumstances I haven't pinned down yet. (And it only works if I don't hit the "Change All" button.)
I've confirmed in System Preferences->Quicktime->MIME Settings that QuickTime is not associated with SMIL files. I found a Default Apps utility that confirms that .sml extensiona are associated with Aquamacs, and that the file type "EMAx" is also associated with Aquamacs.
I used the Property List Editor to look at com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and the entries for public.filename-extension for "lex" and "grm" that I also created for org.gnu.aquamacsemacs match the entry for "sml", and they still work.
All this happened when I forked out for the "pro" version of QuickTime. I've already asked this question in the QuickTime discussion group with no luck. I would be hugely obliged for any advice that leads to a solution, or to anyone who can forward this to whatever engineer in apple can do something about it.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   QuickTime Player Pro 7.1.3

    Thank you for the suggestion.
I put QuickTime (and DivX) in the trash, and only then would files ending with .sml open with Aquamacs. Even the files that still had the QuickTime icon opened correctly.
However, when I re-installed a freshly downloaded version of QuickTime, the problem simply reappeared.
I'll try to see if people more familiar with Aquamacs know why this is happening.

  • Quicktime Player won't play Sketchup animations

After switching to Lion, Quicktime player renders animation .mov files exported from Sketchup as just black. I can get the movie to play by importing the .mov file into Final Cut Express, then re-exporting it as a .mov from that program. After doing that Quicktime Player plays the movie okay. What gives? Using OS10.7.2,  Quicktime 10.1, and Sketchup 8 on a Mac Pro.

I just uninstalled Flip4Mac and everything is working as it's supposed to. Very strange. Perhaps a conflict with Perian? But then again, QT didn't play the avi files with Perian installed. So, I guess the conflict is with Flip4Mac and something else.
    Thanks anyway

  • How do I load quicktime movies made in Quicktime 7 to iMovie11?

I have made several movies using an older version of iMovie and burned them to dvd using iDvD. Neither iMovie 11 or iTunes witl open it. Quicktime 7 will not export it.  Any suggestions?

When iDVD authors your DVD it recompresses the iMovie edited audio and video data to MPEG-2 video and PCM audio compressed data which is then multiplexed together as blocks of video data interspersed with blocks of audio data in a single data stream to provide spatial synchronization of the audio and video data during playback. This data is then placed in one or more VOB file containers representing your movie for use by DVD media players. If you try to play this content in QT X under Snow Leopard, the player will refuse to play the file because "muxed" MPEG-2 content is not natively supported under this OS. On the other hand, MPEG-2 video support was added to the QT X v10.1 player. Normally, if you do not have the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installed on your system, Lion's QT X v10.1 player will also refuse to play "muxed" MPEG-2 content in a VOB or MOV file container and nothing further would happen. However, if you have the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component and the QT 7 v7.6.6 Player installed, then the content can be transferred to the QT 7 Player which does support certain "muxed" MPEG-2 content formats in VOB or MOV (also MPG and MPEG) file containers but not in a TS file container which QT X v10.1 also supports (along with MPG and MPEG file containers).
I would to move this movie to iTunes and use AppleTV to watch it... Neither iMovie 11 or iTunes witl open it. Quicktime 7 will not export it.  Any suggestions?
Basically, DVD authored content is not "natively" compatible with the QT embedded structure unless additional support is added toyour system or the file container is modified. That is why Apple includes a DVD Player specific app with you system sofware so you can play such "authored" content. Further, unless you can fool iMovie into thinking your "muxed" MPEG-2 content (normally multiplexed MPEG-2/AC3 compressed data) is located on a camcorder device, the iMovie will refuse to access the special iMovie import software component which converts "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 data to all I-Frame MPEG-2 elementary video stream and converts the AC3 audio data to an elementary AIFF (Linear PCM) audio stream and places both in an MOV file container with "in" and/or "out" timing offsets to reduce possible loss of synchronization in a temporal synchronization file environment. In other words, "muxed" MPEG-2 (GOP) spatial sync content is not edit compatible with QT's current iMovie temporal synchronization environment and therefore, iMovie will refuse to import/copy the content to iMovie for editing purposes.
The normal method of for manually converting DVD authored content for re-editing in iMovie is to convert the VIDEO_TS folder data or the VOB title set to an iMovie edit compatible compression format. For instance, the VIDEO-TS folder content can be converted by HandBrake to H.264/AAC files which are edit compatible with current versions of iMovie. However, since you appear to have the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installed, MPEG Streamclip may be a better choice since it allows you to convert to any QT edit compatible compression format supported by your system codec component configuration, as well as, supporting AC3 content if included in the VOB if authored using other third-party apps. I normally use AIC/Uncompressed or HiRes Pro 422/Uncompressed intermediate editing formats here. The object being to create a low-compression, hight-quality intermediate file for editing so as to prevent further loss of visual quality when editing the content. This work flow does, however, tend to create very large editing files and so many users may elect to use a smaller H.264/AAC intermediate file for editing and simply "live with" possible reduction in final visual quality.

  • Quicktime Pro - Importing PNG graphics as Logo for Video fails...

    Hey guys,
I am using the latest Quicktime on PPC. I have a video, created of several PNG graphics, and saved as Quicktime Video.
Now I want to add a small Logo on the upper right corner. For that, I use a graphic-file in PNG format, using the Alpha layer. So all that should be visible is the Logo itself.
I did it according to the Quicktime7UserGuide.pdf:
Open Logo.png in Preview, copy, switch to QT, Select All, Add to Selection and Scale.
Well, the graphics is added to the movie, but as a black square, the size of the bounding box of my PNG (and not the shape of the Logo itself).
Tuning around with all the Adjustments I found in MovieProperties didn't work. I also recreated the Logo in Photoshop (instead of Gimp), just to make sure that's not the problem.
The Alpha Layer is correctly (not) displayed in Preview.
    Ideas? Appreciate it...

Yep. Some ideas for your graphic "import" to Quicktime.
Use the QuickTime Pro)) "Import" or "Open in new player" to open your graphic. Once opened Command-A (select all) and Copy (Command-C) switch to your QuickTime file and select a portion (or all) of your video. Command-V (to paste) or chose Add to Selection & Scale.
Default is the upper left most location. You can edit this via the Movie Properties window.
Once pasted you need to set the properties of this individual track. Choose your track and use the movie properties window to set them to size and location and the set the "Visual Settings" to adjust the "transparency" level and its presentation settings.
I've added .png files to many of my "movies" without any errors.

  • Add chapters??

I have just shared my imovie project to the media browser and am ready to create the DVD in iDVD 9. I want to add 3 chapters. The Add chapters under "advanced" is greyed out. Even if I click movie once and it shows my project it is still greyed.
How do I add chapters in IDVD if it is greyed out?

It is possible to use QuickTime Pro to add chapters to QuickTime files. I'm not sure, but I would guess some video formats support chapters and some don't. You might search or post in the QuickTime forum and see if someone there has a suggestion.

  • Chapters not working once dvd is burned?

I created a dvd in idvd, main menu and used the create chapter markers command, so there are also scene selection menus, all menus work once burned, but there are no chapters to speak of, hitting forward or next on my dvd player's remote does nothing, and the dvd player's in movie menu shows only 1 huge chapter. how do I make it so that I can have chapters? my video has no chapters in quicktime because I do not know how to create them, I do have quicktime pro.

Same thing happened to me when tried to put in regular chapter marks in iDVD '08.

  • Cross Reference displays wrong Chapter

I have several FrameMaker files that will eventually be combined into one book. In some chapters there are references to outside chapters. At some point another person that was using these files had to switch the Chapter title; for example Chapter 7 became Chapter 6. Now when I open up, lets say Chapter 5, and I set up a cross reference to chapter 6 I got throug the following steps:
I make sure both files are open in FrameMaker, I put my cursor in the spot I want to make a hyperlink > Right click > Cross Reference
When the window Pops up I make the following selections:
    Document: Chpater 6
    Source Type: Paragraphs
    Paragraph type: Heading1
    Paragraphs: Page 7
I select the exact paragraph I want referenced
    Format: CH XX, #
When I hit replace I am expecting the text on the screen to say something like "CH06, 3-1 Title" but instead it says "CH07, 3-1 Title"
The link goes to the location I want, it goes right to Chapter 6 but the visible text says Chapter 7 which is wrong. I assume this is happening because someone switched those two chapters.
Does anyone know how to edit what the text says or what I need to change in the switched chapters to make it work correctly. Something else I noticed is that the Document option in the cross reference is saying Chapter 6 with the old title, not the latest up to date title.

I think I may be having the same issue. I'm using Technical Communications version 3. I have a huge FM book composed of many books - over 3,000 pages if it were printed. I'm linking to the FM file in RoboHelp (RH). No broken xrefs in FM, but when I go to RH, there are odd xrefs or missing ones. I keep updating both FM and RH without any success. So, I generated a list of cross-reference markers in FM.
This is what I think is causing this. Even though you're supposed to be able to link to the FM file and if all is ok with the FM book (no errors, no broken xrefs), everything should chug along in RH. But, NO, it doesn't. When I put in cross-references in FM, I do them by the paragraph. But then you can also see the actual marker text, which doesn't always agree with the heading text. This is what RH uses. So, if you're having these issues, check the marker text to make sure it matches the paragraph text.
Below is an example where I had updated the heading, but the marker didn't match. FM didn't care and didn't report a broken cross-reference. RH just displayed the xref heading but it wasn't a link. Very frustrating. I'm looking for a way to get the xref markers to match the paragraph headings.
This is the heading: EContent in the PAC Patron Account
and this is the marker text: 28254:Heading 3: 3M eBooks in the PAC Patron Account - Items Out 768
BTW - I saw some snarky answers - just insecure people who want to show how much they know technically. For me, I just want the *******' tool to work! If I wanted to know all the sausage-making, I'd have been a programmer. I actually like to write and fiddling with RH is just tedious! In my experience, programmers are a dime a dozen; good writers are rare.
Make this a snark-free zone and help novices. Lord knows, Adobe's own documentation just doesn't get it. They tell you what something is but not how to do it! Oh, and the UX in RH is so cluttered and confusing! Do you use a pod or a menu item, what is important enough to get a pod? Why are there all these different ways to set up a project? It's like it was designed by hyped-up, overly-caffeinated people with really bad OCD. It's not about the tool, it's about the writers trying to get their jobs done!
