Switch iPad to spell check uk english for crying out loud

Started with simple document created on iPad2 using Pages 1.6 (504) - noticed spell check default is US English (eg summarize) but I need UK English.
Went through all the settings in iOS Pages to try to switch - no luck.
Went to my iMac, Safari, iCloud, pulled down document, (incidentally noticed it had a problem with missing font despite fact that I'm using defaults throughout), opened in Pages '09 v4.1 (923) selected all, went to inspector, changed to UK English, saved.
Uploaded document to iCloud/iWork - selected 'replace' when given option.
Went back to iPad. Noticed Pages documents had not refreshed. Shut down iPad. Re-started. Selected document, opened, and magically it had reverted to US spelling. Also now has a problem with missing font Calibri - in fact I don't give a tinker's cuss which font it uses, I simply want it to spell in vernacular.
Repeat all of above. Confirmed document when opened on iMac had indeed kept UK spelling, ie problem has something to do with iPad settings.
All-in-all wasted an hour. So much for iCloud/iWork. iGiveUp.
Any ideas?

what's not clear is which keyboard is active since there's no indication.
You can make it clear by holding down the "globe" key and choosing what you want from the list. Or how about deleting the keyboard which does not say English (UK).
Spellcheck normally follows the keyboard on iOS devices and what app you are using is irrelevant.

• For crying out loud Apple turn off autocorrect.

Apple,
It's simple !!!!!!!
AUTO CORRECT..........................OFF
SPELL CHECK..............................ON
I'm sick to death of the stupid thing correcting words that are what I want, I want to proof read it and see everything it thinks is wrong underlined in red.
That's it, some of use the iPad as technical support for work and it simply can't handle the multitude of words acronyms etc,
Please give us the option to have auto correct off and spell check on.

Currently if you turn Auto-Correction OFF you also turn Check Speling OFF as well. There is no way to to have Check Spelling ON and Auto-Correction OFF.
That's what the complaint is about - It's not the first.

• Should I install Logic 8 on my new iMac for crying out loud?

I'd like to - but just wanna make sure... or should I wait for updates before even playing with it?
Shall I keep Logic 7.2 on here for any reason? And what do I do about old 7.2 files opening in 8? What happens?
Thanks.

Four Gigzs will be fine, as it handle processing quite smooth some time i load stuff up and i have to wonder if i was about to load something that is how quick it is.
Logic 7 not being in the Dock at this moment is minor, if you know that it can be launch else where, just also remember in Apple Key-Note on Leapard their is a Dock 4 stuff on the Desk-top which is smart for stuff to pop-up as you would from the Dock.
You can also set the prefference on a L.7 song to open in Logic 8 on the info.
These faults can't be forever, but is Minor if you know Logic inside out, if not then it seems like a nightmare, eg i now has to use the mighty-mouse the one with the tail as my Emagic-Logic Mackie controller doesn't work any more and seems to be a bit scared of the new Logic, hopefully i know Apple will have it working sooner than later.
On a level this Version of Logic is a must have, they have done so much to it its fun!
Except for a few windows that you have to go close and see what's going on, that is a lot smaller than L.P 7 other than that things that i see and the way it looks and run is more than amazing.

• I am no longer the Admin? For crying out loud!

My account type in System Prefs says Standard, when I want to add an application to my folder it asks for a User name and password, but the ones that worked before upgrade no longer do. Please somebody help before I wipe Leopard. The stupid messages that pop up when I download somthing and want to unzip are bad enough - what am I, twelve? - but not letting me into my own computer is really a bit of a wind up. Help help help somebody!

Go to  menu > System Preferences... > Accounts > .
Click the lock at the bottom and enter your Username and Password.
You should now be able to change your account to Admin.

• For crying out loud - leave my Start Menu the way *I* want it!

I put the Start Menu folders for QuickTime and iTunes inside an "Audio" subfolder. I also delete the desktop and quick launch shortcuts for both, as things look tidier like that. But it now seems that I am not allowed to do either of those - if you start iTunes or QuickTime without the shortcut being in the correct folder on the Start Menu, they reinstall, replace the shortcuts where Apple thinks they should be, and restore the desktop and quick launch shortcuts for good measure.
Apple, this is WAY out of line. Desist forthwith - the buggy 1.2 firmware for the iPod was annoying enough, but I'm now about to uninstall iTunes 7 until this is fixed. Go and read the Windows UI guidelines...

C'mon, guys, pretend this is as important as someone cracking your DRM!

• What Mac OS is needed to use Fifrefox 4, for crying out loud? This is not documented anywhere! I installed it, and, upon launching, I was told I it is not supported by my computer (Power Mac G5, OS 10.4)

No need for further details.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

• FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, APPLE!

Yes, I too am having the reappearing email problem on both my computers since a few days ago. It's really getting on my nerves, as I'm sure it is everyone. I don't think the problem coincided with any software updates; seems to be a server issue.
So, Apple, what ever you did a few days ago, just please undo it, OK?
Sheesh!

I think Tony is probably referring to the problems described in the threads "Read mail marked Unread again few minutes later." and "Deleated mail re-appears".
There seems to be some change to the .Mac service that spawned these errors.

• Spell checker in Pages for iOS - other than english

Hello,
I'm trying to get spell checking in Pages for iOS working in another language besides english. My question is- is spell checker in Pages for iOS evailable in any other language besides english? Because it doesn't seem to be- once I change keyboard to another language (even matching system language), Pages stops underlying errors in that keyboard language.
Thanks.

Spellcheck/autocorrect follows the keyboard (system language is irrelevant). Please tell us what language exactly is not working for you.

• My spell check only works for about half of an article. Is there a way to fix this?

When I'm on a wiki, looking at an article, I sometimes see a couple spelling errors that just bug me, so I sometimes go in and fix them. However, when I pull up the editing page, the spell check only works for about the first half of the article. I can't find the errors if they're in the second half of the article. Is there a way to fix this?

You can try basic steps like these in case of issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and the cookies from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

• Pages for iPad - multilingual spell check

Is there any way to spell check multiple languages in Pages for the iPad (or the iWork apps in general, for that matter), short of changing the system language every time?
I routinely write in English, German and French. In most apps, including Mail, SMS and Notes, spell-checking automatically adapts to the keyboard layout chosen, and multilingual typing is a breeze. Not so in iWork, it seems.
I am currently working on a German document in Pages on my iPad, and the only way I could get usable spell-checking was to switch the whole system to German, which seems like overkill.
Am I missing something?

No, you are not missing anything. The last version of iWork for iOS (1.4) is out today, but still has the same problem. Send feedback to Apple and make yourself heard here in the forums. Maybe they'll notice.
I have the exact same problem. My solution is, unfortunately, not to use Pages on the iPad. Every other word processing app I know of uses the language of the selected keyboard to check the spelling.
The irony is, iOS already has a beautiful system to handle documents in many languages, with all the necessary keyboards and dictionaries. The only apps that do not make use of all that are the ones from Apple...

• My primary keyboard is English UK and secondary one Spanish. Until now when switching keyboards the spell check would automatically change to the desired language. Somehow it does not happen anymore. Any ideas on how to fix this?

The keyboard doesn't normally play any role in Apple apps regarding spellcheck. That is determined by system prefs/keyboard/text/spelling. Go the setup item at the bottom of the list and make sure that British English and Spanish are the only two boxes checked, and then set it to Automatic. How well it works varies a lot. You may also need to check Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar.
If you are still using Pages 4, spellcheck is determined by Inspector > Text > More > Language. Make sure that is set to the right thing for what you want to do.

• Spell Checking only works for English after 10.4.9

After installing and reinstalling (combo version) of 10.4.9 on my Intel MacBook Pro, the Spell Checking is working only for the English language.
Seems that other languages are not installed (although they are at the spelling pop up). When I activate them, nothing works. No spelling as I type, no suggestions at the spelling window...
Any one know how to reinstall only the languages?

Nothing?

• Can you add a word or name to the spell checker in pages for iPad?

I'm looking for a way to add a word, alternate spelling or proper name to the spell checker for the newest version of pages for iPad so they won't keep showing up as "misspelled".
Can you help?

No, the ability to add a word to spell check dictionary is not a current feature.

• Spell check in english in pages doesn't work

I've recently purchased Pages for my imac. The spell check is still recognising the American spellings rather than English e.g. recognize rather than recoginse and color rather than colour. I have opened the Inspector>Text>More and checked that the language says British English but it still picks up on American Spellings. My language is set to British English within the settings on the computer. What else can I try or is it a glitch in Pages?

You have to set the system preferences to British English. For americans American english is English!!!!
System preferences > Language and text > Language > Edit list > check British English > Ok. Make sure that B.E. is at the top of the list if you have more than one language there.
Log out and in again in your account. Open Pages and check that the default language is B.E.

• [solved] Hebrew spell checker as dependency for enchant?

Hi, on a fresh installation I noticed that the only dictionary Evolution shows is for Hebrew.
$ pacman -Qs hebrew
local/hspell 1.1-2
Hebrew spell-checker
I then tried to remove this but pacman says enchant needs it which is needed by a lot of packages:
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: gedit: requires enchant
:: gtkhtml4: requires enchant
:: kdelibs: requires enchant
:: libwebkit3: requires enchant
I just ask myself why is a dictionary a depemdency for such a package?
Last edited by thms (2012-03-28 07:16:28)

To fix the problem of the Hebrew dictionary being the only one Evolution sees, you need to install any other dictionary. Typically you would want packages like aspell-[LANGUAGE]
Also regarding why enchant actually depends on hspell: http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … dcdb8dc519
