  • Multiple Minis with Multiple Switched Monitors Losing Monitor 2

    Hi.
I am working on an installation with six new Mac Mini's (Lion) and we are using dual screen HDMI outputs on both.  The Monitor 2 (HDMI) output goes to the display screen "on stage" and the Monitor 1 (Thunderbolt to HDMI) output goes to a local HDMI switched monitor for local viewing and programming.  The problem is that when we switch the local monitor from Mac 1 to Mac 2 and then back to Mac 1, Mac 1 will have lost its connection to Monitor 2, defaulting back to Single Monitor Output.  Changing the monitor arrangement is not an option.
Is there any way around this?
    Thanks.

When you switch the monitor away from a particular Mac, that Mac no longer receives a signal back from the monitor. The Mac then assumes it has been disconnected which in reality is true. The Mac therefore reconfigures itself accordingly.
In some circumstances like yours, and more commonly people using a TV as a display via an AV Receiver, this can be counter to what is desired. There is a solution but it is not free, Gefen make a device called a HDMI Detective which 'learns' the signal the TV sends, and then will keep sending it to the Mac even when the TV (or monitor) is disconnected. They also make a DVI version see http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=8005 and http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=4715
It should be noted that if you are running audio via HDMI, then when the Mac loses the HDMI connection it also resets the sound to go via the built-in speaker. The Gefen HDMI Detective Plus also solves this.

  • Command-tab pop-up list of apps switches monitors

The command-tab pop-up list of apps switches monitors sometimes on my two-monitor system. Why? Why doesn't it always appear on the monitor with menubar specified in Displays preference panel? How do I switch it back when it moves to the wrong monitor? Very annoying because I can't figure out why it moves to the other monitor in the first place!  (actually running OS X 10.9.4 -- not Mavericks -- but you don't seem to have a community for OS X 10.9)

That unfortunately doesn't work. I just tried it. For the last couple minutes, the command-tab app list has been appearing on my "main" monitor (the one I selected in Display prefs to have the menu bar). When I click in my "secondary" monitor to highlight its menu bar and then type command-tab, the app list still appears on the main monitor. Doesn't make a difference whether I click on the desktop background or a Finder window or an app window on the secondary monitor, when I hit command-tab the app list still appears on the main monitor. And all of that is OK. I'd like to have the command-tab app list ALWAYS appear on the main window.
The problem is that sometimes the app list switches to the secondary monitor and I don't know why. And after that happens, I can click all I want on the main monitor -- desktop, Finder window, application window -- and the app list still appears on the secondary window when I type command-tab. I'll give up trying to make it switch to the main window and then, at some point, I'll notice that it has switched back to the main window. I can't figure out why it has this behavior, which seems to be random. Or at least I can't figure out what to do to make the pop-up app list return to the main window.

  • Illustrator CS5 automatically switching monitors

    Hello,
I am running Illustrator CS5 on Windows 7 64 with dual monitors and my problem is that every time I open Illustrator it starts on the main monitor to the left.  All of the other CS5 applications remember where they start and stay there.  If I move Illustrator to the other monitor (right) and start a new file the application switches back to the other monitor automatically (left).  If I then switch it back (right) and start working it will automatically switch monitors again (left).  I have a Wacom tablet mapped to the monitor on my right and I can't seem to keep the application there.  Photoshop CS5, Fireworks CS5 and even Illustrator CS4 handle this fine and stay on my monitor to the right.  It has made it unusable if I need to to work with my tablet.  Please help.

  • Crash switching monitor resolutions / no crash report

I have a Mac Mini which runs 10.4.11 connected to my Onkyo A/V receiver using a DVI->HDMI adapter cable. I frequently also connect to the Mini from my laptop using Apple's Screen Sharing utility (1.0.1). This kinda-sorta works, but I experience frequent crashes where the Mini reboots itself due to monitor resolution switching. Typically it goes like this:
    - connected with Screen Sharing - everything is fine, although 1024x768 seems to be the highest resolution I can get
    - turn on A/V receiver and resolution switches -- attempts to switch monitor to 1280x720 (which is what I want) and often the Mini crashes/reboots... or sometimes AppleVLC crashes
Rebooting at this point, with the receiver on usually causes the Mini to have a 1280x720 resolution after the reboot, but there is no crash report for the incident.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there some way to force the Mini to think it's always talking to a 1280x720 display, even when the only "display" is via Share Screen? (I mean, this is the best resolution for interacting with the Mini from my laptop anyway.)
    2. Is there some display driver upgrade that can be done to prevent the crash.
    3. Is there some way to make sure that crashes get logged properly and sent to Apple? (If VLC crashes, then a crash report does get sent, but if the Mini itself crashes, I get nothing.)
    Thx,

P.S. I just switched my receiver to a different input (audio only, and shut off my projector), and the Mini crashed in this situation too!
My receiver is an Onkyo PR-SC885 (basically equivalent to Integra DTC-9.8), connected to a Panasonic PT-AE2000U projector (since my primary display is a projector, I hope you can see why the VLC access is essential).

  • NView -- switched monitor numbers?

I realize this is more of an nvidia question but I figure someone here probably knows the answer to this one real quick:
I have an FX5200 Personal Cinema card running 56.64 drivers in nView dualview mode with primary (#1) on my CRT and secondary on my TV (#2).
My son unplugged my monitor the other day while in use and the card automatically switched my TV to the primary monitor (and renumbered it #1) (there may have been a reboot in there).
I want to switch my CRT back to #1 (and make it primary) and my TV back to #2. I can make the CRT as #2 primary but I can't rename it back to #1 primary.
Basically, I want to make the main VGA out from the card the primary (and identified as #1) and the breakout box (including VGA dongle) secondary (#2) as my default setup.
What I find weird is Display Properties-Settings shows my CRT as #2 but nView Dualview shows my CRT as #1. "Identify" labels my CRT as #2. How can I correct this? I've tried going to single monitor mode and also disconnectin the TV but the CRT still shows up as #2 (and #1 is simply greyed out).
Anything I can do to fix this short of reinstalling the driver?

I had already tried out the instructions for switching it over as you say but I still had a discrepancy between Display Properties-Settings and the Nvidia menus in the way the monitors were numbered but...
I took your advice and changed it to clone (and then back to single and then to dualview; between each one of those I was prompted for a restart which I took to be a good thing) and it's all straightened out now.
    Thanks a bunch!

  • IPhoto cant switch monitor profiles in dual monitor mode

    Hi,
my problem is that i am using iPhoto 6 (newest version) with the internal screen of my macbook and an external screen. Both are calibrated. Most programms like Photoshop or Capture one or Aperture switch the profiles of the monitors while going from one to another. You can see that, it just takes half a second and the correct color is displayed. iPhoto seems to be not capable of that feature. It stays all the time with the profile of the main monitor selected in ColorSync.
Does anybody else notice this or am i the only one?
The Apple Care Hotline couldnt help at all...
Btw. It is exactly the same problem with Safari.
    Cheers
    Axel

Thank you Terence for your reply.
I think you are right. But nevertheless I need to know what I am dealing with. Sometimes I am just not sure wether running on the correct profile or not. That makes work sometimes a bit difficult.
Also I am angry because it took me a few days and a thousend nervs to find out what the problem is. Apple doesnt know of this program as far as they told me. I wonder if this is a known "bug" or if this should not be the way it is. Maybe these programs are usually able to switch the profiles. I just dont know. That is what I want to know.
    Cheers

  • About to make the switch monitor question

    Hey,
I am about to make the switch and get a Mac Pro and I have a question I need answered. Will I be able to use any LCD monitor with the Mac Pro? I need to figure this out because I think the Apple monitors are a bit out of my price range at this point in time.
    Thanks

Which LCD are you talking about?
I have a ViewSonic VE800 VGA LCD and it is fine. Uses the DVI-2-VGA adapter that is included.
I know there is a thread with someone with a problem - not sure how it turned out, whether it was the monitor or video card or something else. Not that many threads in this forum so it should be easy to find. Well, I had to search "Viewsonic": Viewsonic VX2025wm Sleep Problem

  • Lightroom switches Monitor Profiles

When I click on a video file in the film strip of Lightroom 4.1 with Camera Raw 7.1 it seems that Lightroom switches the profiles of my monitor. I calibrate my monitor using the Color Munki Display and before the calibration there was a horrible blue color cast on the display. Now the colors are natural, but as said, when when i click on a video file the monitor jumps back to the blue color cast it had before. After i close Lightroom the color goes back to normal. When i restart Lightroom everything works just fine until i click on a video file again.
    Any ideas?
    I'm running MacOS 10.8.2 on a fairly new MacBookPro 15" with 2.3GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB DDR3 Ram and a Samsung SSD.
Thanks for your help and greetings from Germany.

Run LR 2.0 final, not beta. The profiles are not supported by 2.0 beta.

  • I use multiple monitors, and Firefox switches monitors by itself several times a day (to the main monitor). How to prevent this?

I use Firefox 4, but this happened with Firefox 3 as well.
I have two monitors. I run Firefox maximized on Monitor 2. It switches by itself to Monitor 1 several times a day.
None of my other programs exhibit this behavior.
    Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thank you!

I have a similar problem with Firefox 12 (Mac OS X 10.7.3). The main tool bar is on monitor 1 and I want to display browser windows on monitor 2. In previous versions this worked fine. Firefox automatically opened on the last used monitor. Now it will only open on monitor 1, and I have to switch it manually. Other software does not show this behavior. I have tried switching off hardware acceleration, to no avail. Is there anything else I can do?

  • Lightroom color popping when switching monitors?

So, this might be a silly question.  I have lightroom on one monitor and when I drag it over (the program window) to my other monitor it pops (changes color) after about 1/2 a second.  There is a shift in color.  I'm wondering if it is the monitors ICC profile or something weird like that?  anyone else have this issue.  Both of my monitors are samsungs (different models) and they are both using the Samsung natural color profile.  Thanks

The colours should "pop" slightly, but should end up the same after they pop.
I have two dissimilar monitors (one much wider gamut than the other) but both calibrated/profiled.  If I drag the main LR window from one to the other, momentarily the colour is wrong for 1/2 second or so until LR re-renders in the correct profile for the new monitor.  For example, suppose the main window is on the wide gamut monitor and I drag it to the narrower gamut monitor.  Initially the colours are too pale (as it's using the profile for the wide-gamut monitor), then it re-renders in the correct profile and the colours become correct.
This is what should happen.  If you're saying that colours are not the same on the two different monitors (after allowing the 1/2 second) then I'd guess one or both of the monitor profiles is incorrect or corrupt.
You say you have two different Samsung model monitors - but are you using the same profile for each?  That could be a problem.  Different monitors are very unlikely to want the same profile.  If these are Samsung-provided profiles, make sure you are using specific profiles for each monitor.  Better still: get a hardware colour calibration device (Spyder, Color Munki etc) and create your own profiles.
Edit: an additional check.  Display an image on both monitors.  View on the main monitor in Library Loupe view (e.g. type E) and also display the same image on the 2nd monitor in Loupe view (e.g. type "Shift-E" or type the 2nd monitor icon on the film strip tool bar).  The colours should look identical (within the capabilities of the monitors; a wider gamut monitor might display very highly saturated colours more intensely, but most colours should be identical).  If they don't, one or other profiles is incorrect.

  • Can you switch monitors to one with a digitizer?

I mistakenly bought my Thinkpad Yoga thinking that it had a digitizer included because it was a 1920x1080 screen, and there is no option available for it on the website to have a FHD screen and no digitizer. I bought refurbished from a 3rd party unfortunately, so returning it more trouble than it is worth.
Is it possible to send into Lenovo for service to get a screen with a digitizer installed or is the digitizer actually dependent on the motherboard it ships with? If lenovo wouldn't do it and it is possible, I would definitely wait to buy a part on ebay and do it myself.
Very disaapointing why they would have any model without a digitizer, it is absolutely useless as a tablet without it. :-(
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Lenovo can't swap your parts and upgrade it to the digitiser enabled version. So you have to do it on your own, or find third parties to do it for you.
The digitiser support is not dependent on the motherboard. It is dependent on the LCD you install (digitiser layer is directly bonded to the LCD). I haven't done the upgrade myself. From the look of things, you need the FHD with digitiser, a new backcover (19.4 mm), a new display cable with digitiser support, a new hinge kit, etc. There could be more parts.

  • Can't get F7 external monitor switch to work on 3000 N100

I am trying to connect an external monitor to my Lenovo 3000 N100 but I can't get Fn-F7 to switch monitors. It does nothing at all. Can anyone help me? Running XP SP3.

Hi Guys. Thanks for your help. I've had a little success but still not fully working. I've done a complete update, including BIOS, Power Manager, Power Management Driver, System Interface Driver, Hotkey Driver and finally Presentation Director. Presentation Director wasn't working at all before, and now it is. It comes up when I press Fn-F7 and gives me the option to switch between "Notebook Only", "Same Display on notebook and monitor", "Extended display across notebook and monitor" and "Extended display with "Presenter View Enabled" (I don't understand the last one, it seems to be the same as the next-to-last).
However if I click "Fn-F7 settings" and select "Switch display output from the Notebook LCD to external monitor to both (and then repeat)" then subsequent Fn-F7 presses do nothing at all.
It has given me what I need, which is the same display on both monitors, but it would be nice if the Fn-F7 toggle worked as well.
It would also be nice if I could switch to external monitor only, which I still can't do.
    Any more suggestions?

  • Laptop randomly switching over to f4 key, monitor switching, auto selects one and locks me out.

for the past month or so now, my pavilion dv6 special edition notebook has been acting up. itll randomly pop the switch monitor deal onto the screen, automatically pick a monitor option, and then lock me out. This is annoying as it happens multiple times an hour. Sometimes right after each other. I dont know if it is a keyboard issue since sometimes it will keep putting in "g" 's in places and sometimes the back space doesnt work. Sometimes itll keep putting in the same key over and over and over again without me even touching the keyboard and it wont stop until i hit the key that is being put it.
This is just frustrating since ive only had laptop for 8 months and have formated everything hoping that the problem would stop.
    Any suggestions?

  • SPAN / Monitor Ports - packet switched on Line Card

    Hi Forum,
I got a quick SPAN / Monitor question. I need to create a monitor session where the source is a VLAN. The question is if the L2 source and destination are switched internally on a different linecard to the the monitor destination, then does the SPAN port know about it.
I was wondering as in theory, the packet does not go on the backplane, then how does the switch monitor session know about it ??
    Graham

    Hi,
In the Catalyst 6500 Series, it is important to note that egress SPAN is done on the supervisor. This allows all traffic subject to egress SPAN to be sent across the fabric to the supervisor and then to the SPAN destination port, which can use significant system resources and affect user traffic. Ingress SPAN will be done on ingress modules so SPAN performance would be the sum of all participating replication engines. The performance of the SPAN feature depends on the packet size and the type of ASIC available in the replication engine.
See this link below that contains details about the SPAN on different platforms.
