Switch Radeon 5770 in Mac pro 5,1 to PC GTX 680

I have heard that a Evga GTX 680 PC graphics card could be used in a Mac 5,1 mid 2010 without flashing it ?
What else would I need, don't want to shell out $$ for a Mac card if I don't have to.
Maybe have to sell the GTX 680  if incompatible ?
Thankz in advance

"The GTX 780 with 6GB GDDR5 video memory is only slightly slower than the GTX 780 Ti and TITAN Black but costs much less.
The other factor in naming it the 'sweet spot' has to do with power. The GTX 780 6GB runs fine on the dual PCIe internal power cables -- as does the GTX 680 and Radeon HD 7950."
"Though most of the attention is on the new 2013 Mac Pro. we continue to explore ways to 'pump up' the legacy Mac Pro towers. One of our favorite upgrade paths is the graphics processing unit aka GPU. We recently tested the GeForce GTX 780 with 6G of GDDR5 video memory (courtesy of MacVidCards). It just may be the 'sweet spot.' We'll explain after you peruse the graphs."

  • ATI Radeon 5770 on Mac Pro 3.1

    Hi All,
I got a question I want to buy the new 27 inch cinema display but this new display got the apple mini displayport which my mac pro don't have.
    Specs Computer:
MacPro3,1 Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2,8 GHz with videocard: ATI Radeon HD 2600
    So what to do now?
    First option:
Do I need to buy the ATI Radeon HD 5770 because this got all the correct ports to connect to the 27 inch display? And will this display be able to connect to my mac pro? And how many monitors can be connected to one ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card? Because I have also my old display 20 inch and I want to use that if it is possible as a second screen.
    Second option:
I read on the internet that It is possible to buy an dual DVI to apple mini displayport converter but I don't read on apple site if this will work correct? But with this solution if it is possible then I can not work with 2 screens not a big problem but is this cable good to buy for my mac to connect to the display?
I hope i'm clear and understandable and I hop you can help me with this "problem".
    Thnx,
    Nick

  • ATI RADEON 5770 on Mac Pro 2006

    Hello,
I am using a MacPro 1.1 (from 2006) and out of the blue my video card which was Geforce 7300GT burned out. I can't find a replacement card which is the same and only combatible one I found is Ati Radeon 5770. Before I move on buying this card I am wondering whether it will work first of all on my mac pro, and if so which exact model should I purchase since I see some differences in each one as far as the memory bus (4800Mhz, 5200 Mhz and 1200 Mhz) and the processor clock speed ( 850 Mhz and 875 Mhz) I would really appreciate some help on this matter since it's already 2 weeks I am trying to solve it.
    Thanks!

    Well, thank you for that.
If you are lucky or willing, the link I have for 1st gen 8800GT model on ebay. Pricey as can be though.
    Also:
    http://myworld.ebay.com/macvidcards/
Hopefully 5770s are waiting for drivers or to be replaced with Radeon 6xxx series (but which would then require more retooling of drivers you can be sure).
Last year this time, the 5000's were just coming out. Nvidia was also inbetween the FERMI (GeForce 400s) and older GTX 200 series which caused shortages and when you could find anything, inflated pricing.
When I bought the 8800GT I also picked up ($129) OS X DVD 10.5.6 (had I guessed, I would have waited for Snow Leopard @ $29 maybe). And, you have to call but 10.5.x DVDs can be ordered by phone Apple Store but not online (another peeve, it is almost impossible to buy Leopard now, the last that supports PowerMacs too).
At least the Apple variety of ATI Radeon work in any and all Mac Pro models.
If there is a way to flash or work with PC cards, that would come from MacRumors Mac Pro.

  • ATI Radeon 5770 in Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro 3,1 (the 2008 model), which works with the ATI Radeon 5770 GPU. I want to upgrade from my 2600 because it's noisy and not as fast as I want it to be. It seems like there are two versions of the 5770: Mac and non-Mac. What's the difference? Can I put a regular 5770 in my Mac or only the "Mac version"?

Graphics cards that are PC-BIOS only do not show a picture under MacOS X, which uses EFI firmware.
PC-cards that have been flashed to EFI firmware do not show a picture until the login screen.
Genuine Mac cards show a picture from power-on, and this makes debugging and booting from another drive much simpler.

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

    Hello,
    I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
    Mac OSX version 10.6.8
    Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.

  • ATI Radeon HD 5870 + Mac Pro 2,1 (2007).

    Hello All!
Is any one known or tried to use HD 5870 in Mac Pro 2,1 which is Octocore ?? Is it works?? If it work, what boot rom version in this mac pro?

    Radeon HD 5870 versus 5770

The 5870 works, but not that much better to justify the extra $200 which could be spent on something to boost overall system like an SSD.
I think everyone pretty much knows 2008 intro'd both EFI64 and PCIe 2.0 and of course better for graphics choices.

  • ATI 5770 and Mac Pro 3,1 question

I've seen this topic discussed in various ways here. Still don't get it (and I'm not usually this dense). Trying to install 5770 in Mac Pro, 2008. Several posters say they are doing well with that configuration. I'm running 10.6.8. Mac does not recognize the card, and the fan on the card does not spin. Are there drivers I need, a Pref Pane I need (there's one in my System Prefs now, but apparently it is very old and for non-Intel Macs...where it came from, I don't know). Step by step, what do I have to do to get this card to work in my Mac? Tried to piece the info together from various other threads, but it it inconsistent and incomplete (for my purposes). Thanks!

Trying to install 5770 in Mac Pro, 2008.
Is that a apple version of the 5770?

That's an electrical/mechanical problem.  Nothing to do with drivers.  Fan should spin.  I'm currently on my 3rd 5870 card because the fan would not always start up.  Bad baring?  Bad lubrication?  Weak motor?  Fan hitting it's container?  Who knows?

Drivers should be included with 10.6.8.  No prefpanes.

I am such a Mac fan now it is downright scary. I was never a Windows user and was IBM's official "OS/2 Guy" for many years. Apple moved to Intel just after IBM announced the end of support and sales of OS/2 and that was enough for me.
The transition was pretty seamless. Both OSes are object oriented unlike Microsoft's OS. Installing a printer under OS/2 was a hit and miss kind of thing due to driver age. When I plugged in an HP ColorLaserJet I had no idea if it worked or not. There was no announcement or sound. So I sent something to be printed and it rolled out like a champ.
My biggest frustration was with the Superdrive. I put a DVD in, watched and loved the way Mac handled it but for the life of me couldn't figure out how to get the disk out of the drive. There is no drive button. Now I know why. None is needed. There are all kinds of ways to get the Superdrive to eject a DVD and so simple I felt incredibly stupid when they were revealed to me. "You're kidding! Oh my GAWD, how simple is that?"
Or to install or delete a program. This will rock your socks. You just drag a program icon to your applications folder and if you don't want it anymore, just delete it. Presto! Gone. To upgrade an installed program just drag the upgrade to the applications folder and OSX asks if you want to update the current program. You say yes and there is no big hoopla or twenty minute wait while the system goes through hoops. Open the program and it is updated!
I bought my Mac Pro within the first 17 minutes of online availability. Same with my BlackBook except I kept speed dialing because they weren't quite ready to accept my order. Now?? Now??? Can I order now?? I bought two Intel iMacs for the office - 20" and 24" and love love love 'em.

  • Radeon X1900 and mac pro graphics problems

    Hi all,
i've a mac pro with two xeon cpu's (2,66GHz) in it. 2GB main memory and a radeon X1900 graphics card. on this mac i use bootcamp beta 1.4, installed the newest driver for this version from the apple support side. also i have updated the graphics FW to the newest version. so all things are on up to date.
my problem is the following: if I play some very graphics intensiv games like STALKER or BIOSHOCK (yes i use my mac for works and sometimes to play), it seems that the graphics card will be to hot. I get a lot of pixel errors. horiz. lines and after a while windows xp is freezeing. so I must reboot the maschine. also VPU recovery comes up.
I've tried several settings (800x600/1024x768/until maximum). 2-3 minutes the game is running well. after that my fans spin up like a plane, get the errors on the pixel side and the game crashes or windows xp is freezing.
i don't know any solution yet. can anyone help me? have some others the same problem?
    many thanks
    Andy

    Hi There,
I was having the exact same problem playing command and conquer 3 in Win XP. I'd play for about 5 minutes or so with the fans spinning at full speed (sounding like the mac was about to 'takeoff'), and then it would just crash.
I followed the advice here, took the graphics card out, clean the dust out and hey presto, the problem was fixed! My MacPro is about 6 months and i was surprised how much dust had got clogged up in there!

  • Mac Pro FireWire does not switch off even when Mac Pro is switched off

    Hi,
got my new Mac Pro with 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon last week!
Found out today, that the firewire connection both on the frontside as well on the backside
keeps beeing powered even if the Mac Pro is switched off!
Is this a new features as my old Mac Pro (2x2.0 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) did not have this feature?
If yes, why is this so? For what is it good for?
Thanks for your comments? If you have the same new Mac Pro maybe you can check out and let me know if this feature is also on your Mac Pro seen.
    Thommy

    Hi,
called to the apple hotline and got informed that the so called "residual current" is normal at the MAC Pro. Sometimes the USB Ports sometimes the FireWire Ports keep been powered continously even the machine is switched off.
Apple told me further that I can use a connection plug board with a central switch to solve my issue.
I will close now the subject! Thanks veryone for all your help here!

  • THinking about the switch from PC to Mac Pro

I'm looking at a configuration of two 2.8 quad-core with 2 gb ram from Apple, 6 gb ram from 3rd party, a single 750 SATA drive and Final Cut 2 Studio, and running VMWare Fusion for running Windows apps, and software development tools (Windows world). I have been doing a fair amount of video editing/processing, and see that growing - between this increase, and Windows Vista, I think the Mac world may be my best choice - I would run the Windows apps under Windows XP.
The Apple Store recommended going with 2 x ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB cards - I will be running with dual monitors, and the biggest demand will come from Final Cut 2. Is there a better choice to be made for the money?
Anybody see any flags raised by what I say I want to do, and the hardware I'm thinking about?
I debated the value in the second Quad core - whether the Final Cut 2 Studio software was written to take adavantage of multiple cores. I'm leaning toward the second quad core since the studio is most likely separate apps, and there might be some benefit provided the second quad core via the OS. Any thoughts on this?
The Ram and hard drives are too pricey from Apple - any suggestions on good third party supplier for the ram chips - I know they need to meet the Apple specs, but assume some mfgs have had a better production/quality history than others.
Any input on this is appreaciated.
    Michael

    Hatter,
The configuration is close - I like both of your suggestions on the graphics card and the boot drive - Apple won't add the Radeon 3870 card, nor the Velocity Raptor drive. So, if I buy the 3870 and Velocity Raptor from OWC, there is a decision I would have to make with regard to what I buy from Apple.
I'd like to continue the process, listing my thoughts, hoping to get more good feedback.
I'm leaning towards buying Apple's standard graphics card (Radeon 2600), and use it for lower demand activities - I figure I can always upgrade it at a later date if the performance is frustrating - I'll have a good comparison with the 3870, so the contrast should be apparent. I'm thinking about the standard 320 g drive, since the extra cost ($50 for 500g, or $150 for 750g) doesn't make sense with the Caviar Black priced at ~$150.
So, I would be getting a machine with the OS sitting on the 320g drive. *Is there a good strategy for adding the Velocity Raptor, making it my boot drive?*
I'm assuming I will get the OS on disc - is this true?
Lastly, I'm looking at the timing of purchasing. I debated on waiting to buy until after MacWorld 2009, but plan on buying prior to the event. My thought was to avoid any issues that come with new releases - adding another layer of issues without knowing what is "normal behavior" isn't worth the increased functionality. In the PC world, sales abound at the end of quarter, and prior to new release. *Is it worth waiting a little while hoping Apple will discount the Mac Pro? Or is this unlikely??*
Again, thanks for all of the great suggestions.
    Michael

    Issued solved:
    - in order to make nvidia graphics working you have to disable Optimius in BIOS.
    - Battery not recognized -- fixed after recend updates
    - grub2 does not work. As soon as grub2 loads, the laptop reboots. -> stick to grub1  --  works now (either I did sth wrong the first time or a new version of grub2 fixes this issue)
    - in order to make the touchpad work properly install psmouse-elantech from AUR
update: this is only a half-solution. vertical scrolling on the right edge works but graphical tools which rely on x11-input-synpatics still don't work. However, everything works fine with kernel 3.3. Once this in the main arch repos you won't need psmouse-elantech anymore.

Hi Im using a Mac pro 1,1 with a TI Radeon X1900 XT: That i need to  upgrade because i believe the card is going bad. I took the card out & blew all the dust out & re seated the card & it worked great for a couple days but now Im back to having issues with it again. i.e computer locking up & wierd lines on both diplays & even distorted graphics.
Anyways I use 2 23" cinema displays. I want to get a new card that will support this set up. OWC sells a card (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit) that is supposed to work with a Mac pro 1,1, but it has 1 dual link dvi & 2 minidisplay ports.
My question is will the 5770 work with the 1,1 & can I hook up my two 23" Cinema diplays to the mini display ports with a adapter? Or does anybody recommend a different card? Im a photographer mainly using photoshop CS5, Lightroom, inDesign, & very little video editing.
Thank you in advance for any help!

    Hello guys,
I've been using usual Windows PCs at home (watching movies through HDMI, playing a few games - Counter Strike and random racing games), browsing internet, working in PS and Light room etc, but mostly for watching HD movies. But I was able to get myself Early 2008 Mac Pro - 10gb memory, two dual core intel xeon processors, 256 Ati Radeon graphics cards and 1tb ssd hard drive. Now I wanted to know how good is Mac Pro for home use? As I said I don't do many things with my windows based PC and wanted to switch to faster, quieter mac pro. Any opinions?  How good it is as a home entertainment center?
P.S. Counter strike is available now for Mac, so I don't really care about other games.

dump the 2600XT and there I would pay for a Mac Edition AMD 7950, else PC card
    1TB SSD is unusual gift
even though 8 cores it is 6 yrs old and most things don't use 8 cores that much, it predates the i7-920,
USB3 has to be added if you want it or put USB3 on your LAN router is what I do.
It does not get the official nod of support from Apple for Windows 8/8.1 but it does if you want run 7 or 7 Pro (dual cpu support)
FBDIMMs have gotten better and cheaper if you want or need to, many do, often due to early death.
