Switch Radeon 9600Pro for MSI 5900 SP(XT) ????

Is it smart to switch my Club3D Radeon 9600Pro for
MSI 5900SP 128MB Vivo video card ????
I have Athlon XP 2000+ (overclocked to 2,2 GHz)
2x256 DDR RAM
MSI K7NF2 motherboard
I have 11500 marks in 3DMark 2001SE (default 1024x768)
and 3300 marks in 3Dmark 2003 (default 1024x768)
I can overclock it to 450/700 MHz (stable) and littel mor fo unstable.
I hear that I can overclock 5900 SP(XT) very good and that performance are much better.
Can I have much better performance in games with MSI 5900SP(XT), than I have with Radeon 9600Pro ?

The FX   card will outperform those 9600 or any other you mention.. and you wont have to overclock the card to do it... My roomate has the newer one 256 meg 9600 from radeon and my fx5900XT Kills it.. dead .. the higher the rez the more badly it kills .. we are both using Barton XP2800 and 512 ram .. Im running an Nforce 2 NB my roomates is the KT400a ultra.. and hes got serial raid... pretty even testing ground id say....

Seems like we'll have to wait for someone to tw33k the VGA BIOS for MSI's FX5900 series VGA card... Else I'll be stuck with my paperweights VGA cards now...
I want to see better results on my MSIs' FX5950U vs FX5900U vs FX5900 non-U... Till date, the best card I've o/c'ed is the FX5950U at 1.05GHz, FX5900U at 990MHz and FX5900 non-U at 950MHz...
Though it seems that the memory clock has the capability to o/c even more one after another but the 3D clock is still not more than 560MHz for all 3... and 3DMarks no big difference... Maybe due to my system's bottleneck problems also...

  • Catalyst 3.9: indeed a solution for Radeon 9600pro?

Until now I have only been able to avoid system locking up and screen going black
with my Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600pro ultimate (passive cooled),
by reducing the AGP transfer rate from 8x to 4x (plus no fast writing and no sideways writing).
Yesterday I installed the new Catalyst 3.9 driver and until now I had no crash
although I'm using AGP 8X again.
Remark that I'm using system default settings (shadow disabled) and I play no
    games at all.
Are there other users with similar experiences?

I've been to optimistic, problems are back.
I'll have to return to AGP 4X

    RE: AGP/PCI lock
Read a lot about some people being able to lock at specific frequencies and others not. I don't know why this is but I discovered this today while tinkering with the 1.8 BIOS.
When I first set up the board, I had SATA and PATA devices on the Intel controller and was only offered 3 settings for AGP/PCI freq. in the BIOS. I believe they were 66/33 70/35 and something higher that I considered unusable. I then spent the last couple weeks playing with the overclocking features and since the AGP/PCI showed "locked" at 66/33 using ClockGen, I decided not to worry about the fact some people could go up in 1MHZ increments.
Since I moved the SATA devices over to the Promise controller, I noticed that all of a sudden, I too can adjust AGP/PCI in 1MHZ increments but no matter how I set it, it won't lock. Using overclocked settings just pushes it up after booting. I figured out today it was because I had set "keep SATA Active" to "No" in the BIOS since I was no longer using SATA on the Intel side. I then changed this setting back to "Yes" and the AGP/PCI options go back down to 3 options and I can now lock again at 66/33. Yippee!!
I imagine many vets here might already know this but I've been on the forum a couple of weeks and haven't read about this. Now... If I could just figure out how to get 1Mhz adjustments AND locked frequency.
I copied this from an earlier topic for you to look at.
maby something here for you to try out..
sorry the HT thingy diddn't help. i'll try to look into it further for you..

the mainboard is k8n neo 3 gold

Make sure in the BIOS it is set to run from AGP, if there is that option.
the bios itself detects if you use a pci express or agp card in the AGR slot, you cant configure it.
    Quote
There have been some issues with the 9600 series and 8X agp / agp fast writes.
Try forcing 4X agp and turning off agp fast writes in bios to see if it at least boots for you.
there are no settings like fastwrites or AGP mode. the AGR slot only works with cards which are compatible.
    have a look http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/agr/7135agr.pdf

  • ATI Radeon 9600Pro locking up

Hey guys, my ATI Radeon 9600Pro, a normally very stable card is locking up on me, I'm getting "VPU has recovered from an errror" messages and when I load FarCry, after a minute or two even in the menu (which is odly enough graphics heavy) the primary monitor cuts out. The secondary remains though it inaccecible (normal when playing a full screen game). I was wondering if anyone else is having these kinds of issues...

CnQ = AMD Cool n Quiet. If you've enabled it in BIOS & Control Panel Power Options then turn it off and see if that helps. Seems to cause instability for some people in graphics heavy apps (it crashes my m/c in 3DMark03 for example).
hmm...well your power supply does sounds OK. Definitely try the AGP 4x - this generation of ATI cards doesn't seem to like running at 8x on many mobos. Mine won't play at all at 8x - I think it's something to do with needing a v.stable AGP speed???
    cheers.

  • Request new BIOS for MSI R9 270 GAMING 2GB

Hi there, I use W7SP1 with a Gigabyte GA-H87-HD3 mobo and the 13.12 drivers(14.4 suffer from very high OpenCL to Direct3D interop lag unfortunately, which is a showstopper with madVR) and I just bought this board with the exact same BIOS version number as on this link: techpowerup (.com)/vgabios/149707/msi-r9270-2048-131106.html
It's fairly silent under load and I'm happy with that, but when idle the fans seem hardlocked to 1040 rpm
Whatever fan percentage higher than 18% does increase the fan rpm speed, but anything lower still gives 1040 rpm.......what is the point to cool the GPU down to 28°C when its TJmax is 95°C? I would like to drop the fans speed when idle to maybe 700/800rpm and get the GPU to reach 40°C or so?
I run a SSD with a 350rpm oversized CPU fan, a passive PSU and several oversized case fans that also run very slowly, those 1040rpm are killing me....I used to own a VTX3D Vchamp HD7850 that allowed me to make my own custom fan speed curve in Afterburner: dead-silent when idle and slowly ramped up under load, perfect
Of course its cooler was a joke compared to your TF4 but you can see that Asus are now releasing graphic cards that are semi-passive with their fans shutting off until the GPU reaches 65°C, it makes no sense to me to use the TF4 at 1040 rpm when idle(and even more so on the 70W TDP GTX750Ti).
Long story short, I would really appreciate an unlocked BIOS please so I could build my own fan speed curve in Afterburner as I used to. I do plan on buying the future Maxwell's(a twice faster 750Ti would be awesome), I dearly hope that you will reevaluate your TF4 fan speed curves because otherwise I would more than likely buy a semi-passive Asus next time. Talk about wasted potential
I guess you hardlocked it so dumb ppl wouldn't set the fans to a fixed very low speed and toast the board, but posting an unlocked BIOS on your forum that's aimed at power users is just showing that you care. I know EVGA did post this kind of BIOS updates recently and you polished the TF4 cooler to such extents that it's truly a crying shame to be stuck at 1040 rpm and 28°C when idle
There is no question that TF4 is extremely effective under load with a 150W TDP GPU, but you can see that the 270X Powercolor board is quieter when idle in this comparison: tomshardware (.com)/reviews/radeon-r9-270-benchmark-review,3769-5.html
Hope you can help, I will gladly spread the word on HTPC forums because this board is close to perfection when using madVR.
Thank you very much in advance

OK thanks for the reply, but the 18% cap seems BIOS based...I have a hard time believing that they can't run any lower than 1040 rpm
Are you a mod? Working for MSI? This looks like a wild guess more than an official reply if you don't mind me saying.
For the record, that VTX3D board I mentioned in my previous PM was able to go down to 1%.
I would fix it myself but there are no BIOS editors for the R9 serie apparently....MSI simply capped the lowest PWM value: tpucdn dot com/rbe/RBE_Fan.png
Whatever way their speed's being throttled(PWM or voltage), they must be able to go slower than that. I could provide you links but EVGA did make clear that they capped the lowest speed of the fans on some of their boards so dumb users wouldn't fry them but they were entirely able to release unlocked BIOS binaries.
At this point I could either return it or unplug its fans and slap a 600rpm 140mm fan onto the board using zip ties.......it's just amazing that MSI managed to ultimately fail on such a detail. All the work put into the TF4 cooler goes down the drain
flobelix seems able to help, I hope he'll chime in: forum-en.msi dot com/index.php?topic=180521

Fan controller actually can control the fans, and the GPU gets less hot

  • Radeon 9600pro: info

lthough I don't play games at all, I can only use my
Radeon 9600pro (Atlantis, from Sapphire) with colors set to 16bpp (1280X1024).
If I try 32 bpp, often my screen goes black, followed by a W-XP device error message my screen being reset to standard VGA and I'm advised to restart Windows.
It seems that many people with different motherboards and configurations are facing serious problems (most of them with games) with the 9600pro.
The problem seems to be caused only by the graphic card and there is
no veritably solution at the moment.  This is my conclusion after reading this very long thread:
    http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/8596/?o=320
I did install the new Catalyst 3.8 driver from ATI: no solution,
but a new "VPU Recover" facility is added, which did reset my PC when the
usual device error occurred, so I was able to continue my work.
Also a crash message is generated by VPU Recover and send to ATI (if you admit).

  • 45.23's Resolved SBA Issue on MSI 5900 Ultra

Couldn't enable SBA on MSI 5900 Ultra with 45.20 drivers. Fast Writes was ok. 45.23's resolved issue allows me to select, but have to reset after each reboot.

I re-installed the operating system (item 3 in my first post).

  • Graphics driver details for MSI Z77MA-G45 and other motherboards

This is request for MSI to put more details of the on-board graphics capabilities.
My goal is to have four monitors by adding an additional PCIe graphics card.
Recent versions of Windows can only support multiple graphics cards if the drivers are essentially the same.
I would like to see enough information on the spec sheets for the integrated graphics so that I can decide what models of graphics cards I can buy so that Windows will work with my new card as well as the on-board graphics.
The spec sheet says Radeon but I think that there are many options in the Radeon family.

Is there a tutorial on how to flash the new BIOS?
Decompress the provided .rar archive with Winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Then flash the desired file included with Nvflash for dos: http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/nvflash_download.html
To do so rename the included file to .rom and create a dos bootstick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0)
Put nvflash and the vbios file on it and boot from the stick. Then type nvflash -4 -5 -6 gop.rom (if renamed vbios that way) and hit enter. Confirm the questions and let the tool flash.

Also, what is the difference between normal and ln2, or witch one is safe to use?
normal is the pre-overclocked default vbios. LN2 (which can be chosen via the selector switch on top of your card) is not factory overclocked but allows more extreme manual oc without the limits of normal vbios (more voltage and power draw allowed). This is especially needed for extreme oc like if using Liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling for oc records.
