Switch to External Monitor?

Am a new Mac user...trying to switch to my external monitor from the Mac Pro screen....any suggestions?  thanks.

When you open System Prefernces/Displays do you see two panels, one called LCD and one named after the make of the external device ?
If so you can then configure the external as either a Mirror of the current screen or as an Extended Desktop.
If you want to use the external only and close the lid of the MBP then you need an external keyboard and mouse so you can set up 'Clamshell Mode' - this way you can then put the MBP to sleep by closing the lid and then wake it again by touching a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse.

  • Lose Dock when switching from External monitor

When I disconnect my external monitor and open my MacBook monitor the Dock is not visible except when I cursor over the Dock area it's starts to reappear? It's very strange.

I think the problem revolves around the change of resolution when switching back. Because my Windows for Safari are out of whack too. So I am thinking the Dock is position wrong at first.

  • IMAC screen dead.. Switch to external monitor?

Mu son's iMac has a dead screen. Black after startup... The computer is running, but he needs to switch the startup screen to the external monitor so he can make any additional backups he needs before chucking it into the garbage. Actually, it is under warranty, but he has files that need to come off it.
SOOOO, is the a keyboard shortcut to switch the monitors???
    Help.

    HI Mike,
you could try command command + f1 (the key next to escape)
if that dose not work try fn + command + f1.
Alternatively if you have another mac and a firewire cable. you could plug the imac into your other mac, and boot the iMac into Firewire target disk mode; and copy the files to the other computer. Firewire disk mode makes your imac act like it's an external hard drive.

  • Switched to external monitor lost access to Diagnostic Policy, Basic Filtering Engine, cannot print from interenet explorer

    Laptop running windows 7
I switched to an external monitor (broke the LCD) and lost all sorts of things
    1) Diagnostic Policy was not running, and could not be started via services.msc - I received "Access Denied" Error.
    Fixed with
    net localgroup Administrators /add networkservice
    net localgroup Administrators /add localservice
    2) Base Filtering Engine was not running, and could not be started via services.msc - I received "Access Denied" Error.
Still not running - tried all the usual suspects
    a) virus scan
    b) SFC
    c) registry entry looks fine
    d) adding "Everyone" with full access to the ControlSet/services/BFE registry key
    3) Cannot print from Internet Explorer
There are probably other issues .. I suspect there is a common underlying problem, but have no idea of where to look
    Thanks

I dropped the unit on the floor on 6/11 around 1PM, and then tried to turn it on.    I hooked the laptop up to an external monitor at 9:34PM.

  • Trayer does not Adjust correctly when Switching to External Monitor

    Hello
I use a laptop with xmonad and xmobar and trayer. When i connect my external monitor via VGA, i set it to primary. My xmobar moves perfectly to the top of my external monitor, with a width of 90% of the screen, as specified in my xmobarrc. However, trayer acts differently. It does move to my external monitor, however, its position overlaps with xmobar, and does not move correctly to the remaining 10% of the screen left by xmobar which i would like trayer to occupy.
How can i make trayer move correctly?
    Thank you!

Hello again. If i start my external monitor when i startx (i.e through .xinitrc) then it sets correctly. So its just the dyanmic changing of resolution that trayer has trouble adjusting with.

  • Quickly switching to external monitor

Does anyone know of a way or any 3rd party apps that allow you to quickly switch between mirror, extended, internal only, and external only for a monitor like the windows + P function on windows 7? I think its a really useful feature that should be on mac too

I'm looking for similar solutions, and may try this (haven't yet, so grain of salt): http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/8355/switchresx
It seems spendy at $19, but maybe it's worth it if you use it a lot?

  • Can't get F7 external monitor switch to work on 3000 N100

I am trying to connect an external monitor to my Lenovo 3000 N100 but I can't get Fn-F7 to switch monitors. It does nothing at all. Can anyone help me? Running XP SP3.

Hi Guys. Thanks for your help. I've had a little success but still not fully working. I've done a complete update, including BIOS, Power Manager, Power Management Driver, System Interface Driver, Hotkey Driver and finally Presentation Director. Presentation Director wasn't working at all before, and now it is. It comes up when I press Fn-F7 and gives me the option to switch between "Notebook Only", "Same Display on notebook and monitor", "Extended display across notebook and monitor" and "Extended display with "Presenter View Enabled" (I don't understand the last one, it seems to be the same as the next-to-last).
However if I click "Fn-F7 settings" and select "Switch display output from the Notebook LCD to external monitor to both (and then repeat)" then subsequent Fn-F7 presses do nothing at all.
It has given me what I need, which is the same display on both monitors, but it would be nice if the Fn-F7 toggle worked as well.
It would also be nice if I could switch to external monitor only, which I still can't do.
    Any more suggestions?

  • T410 won't recognize external monitor on KVM

I have a ThinkPad T410 with Windows XP SP3. I've installed the latest Presentation Director (4.55) and the latest Intel HD drivers (6.14.10.5273). If I hook up my external LCD monitor (an HP L2045w) directly from the VGA port on the monitor to the VGA port on the laptop, I can extend my video display to this monitor. However, if I attach the monitor through a KVM switch (a Belkin Omniview E series), I can't. I don't have a dock for this laptop.
The weird thing is that if I set the BIOS so that the external display is the boot display, the external mointor shows the boot screens even when on the KVM switch. I can even get the external display to work on the KVM switch if I boot into Safe Mode. But when I boot into Normal mode while on the KVM switch, the external monitor goes dark as soon as Windows switches video modes, and after I log in I can't extend my display onto the external monitor.
    Any ideas?
    BlueBearr

I'm having exactly the same problem.. I'm thinking it might be a power issue (the power adapter for the omniview series was optional) - but I've never seen this before, and I'm seeing other external monitor issues crop up... let me know if you find a solution.
Oh, my keyboard and mouse work fine, just not the monitor.

  • Macbook Pro 15 Late 11 extreme fans noise when using external monitor

Dear Apple, recently I bought Macbook Pro 15 Late 11. I really love it's speed and new OS X Lion, BUT this Macbook really noisy when I use external monitor and keyboard. I work on external monitor all the time. I don't care about how hot my Macbook is when I'm on external monitor. Let it just be hot and quiet.
P.S. Example. I run Ableton Live and have 6200 RPM working on external monitor (awfully loud!). CPU 90% idle. When I switch off external monitor and use internal one, RPM drops down to 4500 with the same Ableton work session. By the way, I don't need cool graphic card. Apple, let our work days be quiet.

I did that and it didn't help. It's common problem with an external monitor. Here are some links:

  • External monitor goes blank

The backlight went out on my Toshiba laptop so I hooked up a new(er) flat screen monitor to it. The Windows XP startup windows _begins_ but never gets _to_ my desktop. Windows XP startup runs for about 20 seconds and then the monitor reads 'no signal.'
I simply want to access information (files, folders or photos) on the Toshiba before I sent it to laptop paradise forever.

    Hi
Usually you should be able to switch to external monitor using the key combination FN + F5.
I think this key combination would not work in safe mode since safe mode loads only some essential system processes.
So if you are able to boot the Windows OS in normal mode then check FN + F5
You could also try to change the display settings in graphic display properties -> last tab Settings (to get the display properties click right on desktop and choose Properties )

  • Extern monitor only when connected?

hi, i have a big problem, i have a macbook pro 3,1 running arch with nvidia driver, and i have an extern monitior, which i want to use, if plugged in on dvi.
i want to use the extern monitor only, no macbook screen, i know i can enable the monitor with nvidia-settings, but when i shutdown, disconnect the monitor, and for example have a journey with the train, then my macbook cannot be used, because the configured screen is the extern monitor, and the macbook screen is black. no hotplugging here
if theres no clean solution for this problem, maybe there is a cmd to switch to external monitor only, which i can enter manually every time i need the extern screen, and after reboot it switches back to macbook screen?
i hope someone can help me....
    regards chief

You can try something like this in your .xinitrc
    xrandr | grep DVI | grep " connected "
    if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
    xrandr --output LVDS1 --off
    xrandr --output DVI --auto

    Hi mate
I recommend using the key combination FN + F5
You can use this in order to switch to external monitor or TV output.
This key combination support several options:
    - internal screen + external screen
    - external screen only
    - TV out
    - etc...
You have to press FN + F5 several times in order to get the right output.

  • How to switch off internal macbook screen when using external monitor(s)

as far as i observed, adding external displays ( running different screens on them, not mirroring)  to a macbook pro  increases the gpu workload and with that comes temperature rise in the laptop and increase in ventilator noise - and probably increased hardware aging and risk of component faillure due to high temperature inside the laptop.
simply try connecting two external 27" screens and open some flash video on both of them. then run a temperature monitoring software and watch temps rise, compared to running same flash videos / demanding tasks only on one connected external screen or only on the laptop screen with no external monitor connected.
especially in mavericks, due to its increased background routines, such a set-up appears ever the more taxing, then again who does not love apple`s nice adds showing laptops with two 27” screens connected to it and the workspace vision they invoke....
i have seen temps around 100° to 102° celsius on a 13" macbook pro 2012 edition, which i would expect is territory where the cpu / gpu temp safety switches will trigger system shutdown any time soon ( hardware status before verified as fully in order by apple service and default osx installation)
imagine your anti-virus software starting some realtime content screening while runnign some demanding tasks already and the system shuts down easily (all such situation observed in reality)
(would be interesting to see how a retina display macbook fares with 2 external monitors running demanding tasks, considering the retina display already increased taxing for the gpu - any experience from users of such a setup would be very much appreciated as it will provide critical purchase decision intelligence for all of us envisioning a retina-book and two big screens adoring our desks...)
turning down the macbook`s built-in screen`s backlight may reduce power consumption but i have not seen any evidence that it switches off the gpu-to-screen feed and respective gpu load - it certainly did not prevent gpu, cpu, board, etc temps to rise to borderline levels.
so the key question here is, how to switch off the macbook pro`s built-in screen in order to avoid gpu cycles being wasted on that screen ( and the resulting heat developments)  when working with big external screen(s)  connected to the laptop ?

this thread talks about running several monitors as advertised by apple and running demanding task on them.
with the lid open, the keyboard offers a very efficiant heat escape vector, which is blocked when the lid is closed - this is a basic and commonsense insulation effect.  this thread also mentions the use of temperature monitoring software and thus a repeatable test setup. the temps recorded were also mentioned. they rose when the lid was closed, the running task remaining unchanged. as far as i could track down the cpus in discussion will shut down around the 105 degree celsius range. i observed system shut downs when the system approached 103° celsius.  not to mention that the fans will run loud well before that.
again this is on hardware checked and ok-ed by apple service.
the question still welcoming an expert answer: is there any way to switch off the built-in macbook monitor while the lid is open ?

  • External monitor, how to switch of internal monitor

With a second, external monitor, how do I switch of or darken the internal iMac monitor? In particular together with a beamer the screen light is disturbing. (however it works seemless great with a 720p beamer!)

    Hello Joe.
System Preferences : Displays: Brightness bar is at the bottom.
This will allow you to darken the screen a bit, and is currently the only way I know that will allow you to do what you want.
For faster access you can select the "show displays in menu bar", which will allow you to access the Displays system preferences pane from the menubar at all times.

  • How do you switch output sounds   set to my external monitor that is connected via HDMI.

How do you switch output sounds   set to my external monitor that is connected via HDMI.

    Hello gail from Ajijic,
If you'd like to change the audio output of your Mac, you can do so by accessing the Sound preferences in your System Preferences.
Before you start, open the Output pane of Sound preferences (choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, then click Output).
    Choose a sound output device
From the list of sound output devices, select the one you want to use. All sound output devices available to your Mac are listed, including the computer’s internal speakers, devices plugged into your computer’s sound port (), USB speakers, and AirPlay devices.
For any device plugged into the computer’s sound port, choose Headphones.
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your computer’s sound output settings
