Switch to sms / chat in messaging app/

Sending a sms will be highlighted green and when switched to chat is orange. is their a difference in these two means on messaging?

Is it the same app is one colour for one app and the other colour for another app and the colour difference is a visual reference

  • Is it possible to sync past sms to Yosemite messages app?

I just recently tried out the sms sending feature on Yosemite, and the devices paired alright. But is there any way to see my previous sms from the past on my Mac?

    Not that I know of.

  • Z3 / Z3 Compact Chat service disappeared in Messaging App

Hi there. Since the latest lolly update, the "chat service" has disappeared as an option from the stock messaging app. The one where your texts were coloured yellow if they were being sent over the internet rather than an SMS. This is very frustrating, as I was just extolling the virtues of this feature to my wife who has the Z3C, I have the Z3. She raves about What'sApp you see. Now "Chat" is gone! It's not even in the settings menu as "enable chat service" anymore... Have deleted data from app etc to no avail. Any ideas folks? Many thanks. It has gone from both our 'phones BTW.

OK, the version of the Messaging app we both have is 28.1.A.1.4. Wife's Z3C still shows SMS after each text, and settings screen shown the Chat Service options. Mine doesn't! Here, have a look...

  • How can I distinguish between iMessages and SMS messages in the iOS 7's "Messages" app?

I often chat with the same contact using both services, but I just have a duplicate contact thread in the "Messages" app, which I cannot distinguish unless I go into the thread itself and check to see whether the conversation is blue or green. Is there a way to distinguish between the two services? If so, how?
If not... Apple, get on it.

Excuse me great powerful one. I will certainly deal with it and I'll try to survive. Sorry if I have troubled you, great Sir. I am not worthy of your answers.
BTW: If you would have read the Q thoroughly you would not have posted an exact same answer.
"...unless I go into the thread itself and check to see whether the conversation is blue or green. Is there a way to distinguish between the two services?"
And I got your reply saying:
"Yes, by going into the thread itself and check to see whether the conversation is blue or green."
    Wow, that was heplful.

  • How can I import Chat history into the Messages.app?

Okay so this is what I've done so far: I've freshly reinstalled Mac OS X 10.8.1 on my Mac and I've already copied the Messages Folder located in User/Library/Application Support, to the new one.
The idea is to access all this history data in the Messages.app, but so far I haven't been lucky.
When I'm chatting with people, the recent activity will be shown in the left column of the app but nothing from the past shows up, yet.
Is there some way to import all the chats into Messages, so that I can see them all in a nice way instead of quick-looking them in the Finder?

    Hi,
The "sync" between and iPhone (or other iOS device) and a Mac only works from the time both devices have the same details.
Effectively this is the time that the iPhone has the Apple ID added to it's settings and the pop ups that appear on the Mac about the iPhone's details are accepted.
The Sync  is then "Display on all devices" only.
There is no catch up on existing threads on either device on the other.
If you delete an iMessages or a conversation on one device the other is unaffected.

  • Messages app no longer works; plists or chat.db are missing

The reason this happened is that well... I sent a really really really long message and it crashed my messages app. So I figured I would try to delete the chat.db file in /Library/Messages but... there was no file there. Then I checked for the plist files in /Library/Preferences/Apple and the plists for messages were all missing. This is the only way I am aware of to solve the problem but these files are clearly gone! I figured maybe they were hidden for some reason so I used a terminal command to show all hidden files, which seemed to work but the files in question were still missing. Am I missing something? Is there another way to fix messages without these files? Should I find replacements for them?
    NOTE:
I have also just tried looking in ~/Library/Containers/Data/Library/Messages/Archive but I don't even have a Containers folder in Library...

I think you are probably looking in your system library rather than the user library.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you aren't sure of the difference, I'm not sure you should be playing around in there without specific instruction.

  • Message.app Version 7.0.1 (3322) does'nt show my picture when I chat from my mac Lion 10.8.5

Message.app Version 7.0.1 (3322) does'nt show my picture when I chat from my mac Lion 10.8.5
But my email show my picture.

Thank you for your prompt reply, Niel.
The website that I will use supports the following browsers:
    Internet Explorer v.8
    Internet Explorer v.9
    Internet Explorer v.10
    Internet Explorer v.11
    Mozilla Firefox v.32
    Google Chrome v.37, v.39
Safari v.5.1.7 (PC) and v.7.0.6 (iOS)
Other browsers and versions may not function well with the website. Therefore, they recommend to use one of the above-mentioned browsers.
Can I download any of these browsers to my MacBook Air if I already have a Safari browser? (can I have 2 browsers and which of those do you recommend that I download to my computer)?
    Thanks again!

  • In my messages App, AIM is logged in fine but Google Chat won't connect.

In my Messages app, for the Google chat it just keeps attempting to connect and then times out before repeating the process over and over.
If I go to my actual Gmail tab in my broswer, it logs in to Google Chat just fine, so I know it's possible to connect.
This problem only happens when I travel (I'm a comedian). I have no issues on my home network, but I've seen this when connecting in some hotels, airports, and coffee shops (not all).
Any idea why I can't connect to Google Chat in Messages, but can in my browser?
    Thanks for your help!
    Josh Sneed

    HI,
A Browser Login to Google is going to using port 443 to manage the secure bit about the Login process.
For much of the lifetime of iChat the regular posters in the iChat Forums were recommending changing to port 443 for AIM Logins and in iChat 6  it did actually become the default Login port.
Jabber Logins (and GoogleTalk is a Jabber server) happen on either port 5222 when they don't use SSL and port 5223 when they do.
Google do so the default port is 5223.
In a router the first 1024 ports are open (Allows Web Browsing, mostly port 80, Mail (loads of different ports but 25, 110 m 567, 589, 995 and some common ones) FTP on port 21 and 22, to name some).
Obviously port 5223 is above the 1024 threshold
This can mean in some places this port will not be open.
In some cases you will be able to convince the Hotel or Cafe to open the required ports
At home you have probably got UPnP set to Enabled in your router.  (This allows the apps to "tell" the router which ports to open.)
However whilst travelling you may want to log in to GoogleTalk on port 443  (GoogleTalk will accept this)
You have to Disable (Untick the "Enable this account" box) the account to be able to change the port.
    It still works with SSL.

  • The old Google Chat / Messaging APP Problem.

ok so i HAD google chat working er, for a while and now its back to broken, did the usual tests we all do, delete everything, redo, make sure its all 100% accurate blah etc and came to thsi weird result.
making a new google account and using that = failed, the email app logs in gets all the mail no problem but the messaging app just loads forever trying to sign in and does nothing, weird as both apps use exactly the same account details.
however i tried a different approach and it works, why it works is beyond me, i created a new chat account via the actual google chat client on the pc, you get an option to setup a new google account/mail or use an existing non google one, in this case i used a spare hotmail account, i then tied that hotmail account into my primary google email account via the google webpage account prefs, set it as the secondary email.
I clicked new account on the touchpad, selected GOOGLE, then just entered my hotmail email which id just linked in, entered the password, and whammo it instantly works.
I'd have to ask why? and why does the proper method fail using a real google email, i only have 1 google email and wanted 1 seperate for the touchpad so i didnt have to use the 1 i use everyday on the pc but ALL newly made google accounts just fail time after time.
    any thoughts here?

it still doesnt work using the google email, deleted or otherwise, google chat will ONLY work when i add my hotmail details (secondary email on my google account) and not the actual google created email (primary mail), however the email app woudl always funtion with the google email flawlessly and only the messaging app would choke on the google email.
so now i have a sort of weird setup in my accounts list where the hotmail account/email is up for use by only the messaging app, i had to untick all the other options and just leave "Use Account With, Contacts ON, Messaging ON, and disabled Calendar/Email/Documents", but the google account/mail is used perfectly by every other app.

  • I am not receiving SMS in Message App of my MacBook Pro

I have MacBook Pro, running OSX Moutain Lion (10.8.5). Months ago I could receive SMS of my Iphone 5 in Message App of my MacBook, but now I do not. I opened Messages App of my computer, then Preferences, and then selected my apple ID under Accounts, my account is enabled but there is not option saying "You can be reached for Messages at"?
Can anyone hlep me how to solve this issue?

    Hello abdulrazeqfakur,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with iMessage on your MacBook Pro.
You mentioned that you are not seeing "You can be reached for Messages at" in your Messages Preferences on your Mac.  I recommend first checking to see if iMessage is enabled on your iPhone and that you are signed in with the same Apple ID on both devices:
You can sign in to your Apple ID on an iPhone by tapping Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5538
Additionally, it is important to note that with Mountain Lion, you are able to send messages to a phone number, but you will receive messages sent to your Apple ID:
Check with your friends to see if they’re messaging you at an email address listed in the “You can be reached for messages at” list or if they’re sending messages to a phone number.
Messages can send messages to a phone number, but it can’t receive messages sent to a phone number.

  • Messages App - 'Accept' button is missing with incoming audio chats

    Hello,
    10.9.1 didn't solve a problem I have since 10.9.
If somebody calls me within Messages App for an audio chat, the 'Accept' Button is missing.
    (see screenshot)
    Can anybody help?
    Kind regards
    Carl

    Hi,
Yes.  Messages is iChat under the hood.
Lion had iChat 6. Mountain Lion gets Messages 7.x.x and  Mavericks Messages 8
There are separate .plist that have iMessages in the name for the account stuff like there are iChat ones for the AIM, Jabber and Yahoo accounts.
(it is similar to the Contacts app still using a  .plist for the Address Book).
If your settings are not that different from the defaults then you will not notice anything.
For instance I use Arial Black and a green background (custom choice) in Preferences > Viewing.  (the default is Helvetica)
Also in the General section I have the item about gathering all buddy lists unticked so that they are separate.
I also use the Show Status item to display the Menu Bar icon.
In Messages the Chats are all in the main window listed down the left with the highlighted on shown in the right hand pane.
You can double click any of the listed ones and a separate chat will open  (the main window can then be closed/hidden) but there is no way to start a new chat in it's own window.
If you create a new Mac User account (System Preferences > Users and Groups) and then login in to that account and use Messages there does it have the the missing buttons ?
This will help prove it is the app (A  Restore will be needed) or something about the saved state of the app in your regular User account.

I have read a number of other threads regarding the loss of Messages, however, I am not aware of the reason it is happening. Check on the right side of this message under more like this and see if you can find an answer.
As to your question about downgrading software, there is no Apple supported method for downgrading software.
