Switch to switch cross cable ?

Well yesterday i read in a cisco book saying that you should have a cross cable when connecting switch to switch & a straight cable when connecting workstation to a switch , but currently i have stright all through , switch to switch or switch to pc .
network seems to run fine, why is this ?
thanks

Hi Malutaru1234,
I think you have copied exactly the same lines from my first post without checking that Fasi74 had alraedy replied that he is having 1900 switch.
Also it is not necessary that he need to configure trunk between the 2 switches when connected via cross over cable becuase trunk is just to pass the information of more than 1 vlan. If you have single vlan in your network you can connect the 2 switches via access link also.

  • Replacement of Oracle RAC Pvt. Interconnect from Cross-Cable to Switch

    Hi,
Previsouly i configured my Oracle 10g RAC R2 with a cross cable b/w two nodes for Cluster Interconnectivity but now due to numerously rebooting issue i am going to replace it with a dedicated Gigbit Ethernet Switch, by doing so would it effect my previous coonfiguration of RAC clusterware or changes of any sort ??? I am keeping the same IP Scheme for my Public, Private and Virtual Interfaces.
Anyhelp on this would be highly appreciated.
    Thanx in advance

    Check the nic mtu by
    ifconfig -a
if your interconnect NIC is configured with mtu is 1500 (which is the default mtu) or 9000 value make sure the your switch is configured with the same mtu value
once the above s done then
    switch off machine.
replace the cross cable with ethernet switch
startup the machine. and start your clusters and services.

  • I have a Samsung HD TV and I purchased a Mini Display port to HDMI Adapter today. For some strange reason I get no display on my HD tv. I even tried switching a few HDMI cables and nothing popped up. I made sure my computer was updated. Help pls

I have a Samsung HD TV and I purchased a Mini Display port to HDMI Adapter today. For some strange reason I get no display on my HD tv. I even tried switching a few HDMI cables and nothing popped up. I made sure my computer performed all software updates, and I even tried calling Apple Support. They just told me to keep trying different hdmi cables and see if anything pops up. Does anybody know what the problem is? My HDMI cable is from "rocketfish" also my display port is too.

You may have the screen refresh rate set higher than the TV is generally able to track reliably. It may be able to get there most times, but occasionally loses sync because it is out of its nominal range.
I suggest you sit down with the manual for the TV and find out what resolutions at what refresh rates it intends to support through VGA, and make sure your screen settings are near (or below) those limits.

  • I chat freezes after switching to high speed cable

3 weeks ago we purchased a new I Mac and set up I chat video conferencing with an AIM account. It worked well, with only a few break-ups in the video. At that time we were using a DSL connection-our buddy (Mom) a 2 yr. old I Mac on high speed cable. We switched to high speed cable 2 weeks ago and from that point on I Chat hasn't worked. We connect for a second and then the picture freezes and we get an error msg. We have had our "Mac Doc" out twice and talked to the cable guys- everyone seems stumped and so far nothing has helped. Any ideas on how we can fix this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Switched from DSL to cable and now can't find apple tv in itunesdevice list

I just switched from DSL to Cable and now for whatever reason I cannot find my apple tv in the itunes device list on my desktop computer. If I use another laptop through the same wireless router I can see the apple tv no problem. My apple tv can see my wireless router and connect to the internet and watch youtube/trailers/etc.
I have tried restoring the apple tv, and have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the itunes on the desktop. I also reset the wireless router...none of the above seem to work. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this has been crazy frustrating...thanks in advance.

If you have an AirPort Extreme or a Time Capsule, you need to use the AirPort utility to access it. Otherwise, your router has a control panel that you can access by entering the router's IP address into your web browser. You'll have to check your router's documentation for the default login name and password, but it's often admin admin or root root (which is why you should at least change the password as soon as possible).

  • Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

    Hmmmm.
If you reset the AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds and then releasing, the AirPort should be back in default settings which would allow mutliple computers to connect to the LAN ports on the AirPort.
Power off the cable modem for now and leave it off at least 15 minutes.
With the AirPort Extreme still powered on, hold in the rest button on the back for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking abmer light.
Then, power off the AirPort Extreme.
Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
After the modem has been powered off for at least 15 minutes, power it up and let it run for 5 minutes by itself.
Now, power up the AirPort Exteme and let it run for 2-3 minutes
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Express
Click on the AirPort Exteme, then click Continue to follow the guided setup tp configure the AirPort Extreme.  You can use the same wireless network name, password, etc that you used before, or set up a new name and password, etc.

  • Switched from DSL to CABLE. WRT54G Wireless Router stopped working.

When I switched from DSL to CABLE, my WRT54G Wireless Router stopped working. I am not able to access the router page (192.168.1.1) Also, when I use the set up CD for re-installation, the wizard aborts in the middle saying it can not connect.
I appreciate any help to resolve this problem.
P.S. The router acts like a one-port wired router.

Here is my favorite method for resetting a router to factory defaults, and trying to get it working again.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Can't access PIX 501 after switch from dsl to cable

    Hi--
I have two small offices and recently switched from dsl to cable internet. the two pix501 f/w units worked fine on dsl, but for the life of me I cannot even access the units now from the inside as I was able to do before when on dsl signal. I know I need to change the configuration from PPPoe to DHCP, but I can't get access to do it.
    Any suggestions?
I believe I have 6.2 software, but I'm not sure. The Inside address is 10.8.6.1 now.
    thanks--jb

    Jorge--
I did have the Pix connected to router, 192 168.1.1 for convenience, so I could still get internet wirelessly without having to do lots of wire unplugging and plugging.
I have since changed to topology of comcast modem connected directly to pix which in turn connects directly to laptop.
In this configuration, laptop pings 10.8.6.1 ok, but pix has no connectivity to comcast.
When laptop connected directly to comcast modem,(ie pix removed) the ipconfig /all from laptop reads the following from comcast:

  • Switch to Switch Connection

Hi, for one project we are using HP 1910-24G-PoE (170W) Switch (JE008A) switch. There are total six nos. of switches at different floors, out of these six switches one switch is located in main server room.
My first question is can we use SFP port available on each of five switches & connect it to one fiber patch panel through different LIU's ?
Sencond question is can we covert these into cat6 (RJ45) again & connect it to 6th switch located in main server room?
    Thanks.

    Hi Shashikant,
I given few thought what could be issue and following are few of the guess
Switch to Switch should be connected with cross cable -- It is connected
Both the ports should have same speed and duplex setting -- It is shared and OK
Possible Layer-2 loop - Needs to verify for both switches- Need topology view (if these switches are connected to any other networking devices)
    Output of show cdp nei
    Output of show spanning-tree
    Output of show vtp status
Shutdown interface and then no shut the interface. Check the logging message on both the switches.
With this certainly you would be in position to identify the close the problem.
    With regards,
    Shailesh

  • Cross cables not supported

    hi all,
i had read in lots of documents cross cable is not supported for RAC environment.
    My Environment is as follows:
OS : SUN SPARC SOLARIS 5.10
    RDBMS : ORACLE 10.2.0 RAC
    NODES : 2
    SERVERS : V490
    STORAGE : 3100
    SWITCH : SAN
OS is installed on 2 nodes with 2 public ip, 2 private ip and 2 VIP.
    Clusterware Environment:
    CRS : /dev/rdsk/c*s5 : 1GB : External Redundancy
    Voting Disk : /dev/rdsk/c*s6 : 1GB : External Redundancy.
Actually we are using cross cables for cluster inter connect but oracle is not recommending and supporting too.
1). How to configure ipmp for public and cluster inter connect.
2). What are the required hardware to complete this.
Plz let me know how to do this.
3). What is the actual problem of using cross cables.
Plz let me know answer from the great experts.

Cross Cables doesn't provide high speed data transfer
between the nodes.Huh? Can you explain this?? How can it be possible?
Certainly, Oracle does not support crossover cables, and there are reasons, but I hardly believe it's due to performance.

  • Can we connect Heart beat IP with cross cable

We have 2 DB serverv , on each server we have 4 NIC ,2 for data 2(heart beat IP) for cluster .
I want to connect both server's heart beat IP through cross cable.
Please suggest the pros and cons as its very important in my case.
    Edited by: user11256753 on 10 Jun, 2009 10:54 AM

Surachart is right, I just want to add a little bit of explanation. When you use a cross-cable and the nic of one of the nodes fail, the link will be dead on both ends and your cluster won't know which node is the faulty one. But when you connect both of them to a switch, the healthy one will at least still recognise an ethernet link.

  • Disable portfast on switch-to-switch connection

    Hi,
From http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/tech/tk389/tk621/technologies_configuration_example09186a008009467c.shtml, it says, "do not use portfast when you have switch-to-switch connection. In this case, the command can result in a loop."
For e.g. when someone connects a switch port(with portfast enabled) to another switch port(with portfast enabled)
    1) can this scenario cause a loop even though the connection between these switch is only a single link?
    2) If it does not cause a loop, what will happen? STP recalculation which causes a short network outage?
    Thanks.
    Christina

    Hi Christina,
    1) Only if there is a redundant physical path between the switches, such as through another switch. If the only physical path between the two switches is the switch-to-switch link in question, then no loop can occur.
    2) Portfast simply ignores the standard STP state transitions and immediately enters the forwarding state, so assuming no loop, a switch-to-switch link that has portfast configured will skip the 50 second STP convergence time and immediately forward traffic.

    Bobby

  • Cisco 4500X + VSS + Trust Sec Switch to Switch Encryption

    Hi,
actually im testing and evaluationg the Cisco 4500X switch as new distribution switch for our Company.... Now i have some issues with one of our requirements.
For security reasons i need to encrypt the links between the 4500X and the access switches in other buildings (no issue with Trust Sec)
But ... now i also need to encrypt the link between the two 4500X if i run VSS ... my question is .. is it possible to encrypt the VSL link with TrustSec Switch to Switch encryption?
    BR,
    Florian

    Hi Frloian,
If you have 2 switches in different data centers than you do not need VSS. In fact this is very bad design as the whole concept of VSS is grasped on dual home design. In the essence the proper design of VSS system is to have every downsteram switch connected with one link to one VSS switch and other link to second VSS switch, so that when one VSS switch would fail other can take over. Please look at the VSS best practises:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-virtual-switching-system-1440/109547-vss-best-practices.html#vss_best
    Update:
There is possibility to encrypt VSL link, but only in 6500 sup2t environment:

  • Conflict using simultaneously IVI Switch and Switch Executive ?

    Hi,
I use IVI Switch and Switch Executive libraries in an Labwindows CVI project, and I meet some problems :
I call SE lib for InitSession/CloseSession/FindRoute and Connect/Disconnect (apply to any switch devices in the SE configuration).
I call IVI Switch lib for SelfTest and Reset (apply to a single device).
But when I do an IVI Switch Reset then a Switch Executive Connect or Disconnect, an error occurs : Switch Executive seems to ignore what IVI Switch operations do to the device ?
Also, can you tell me if :
niSE_OpenSession performs a self test for the devices in the config ? A reset ?
niSE_CloseSession performs a reset for the devices in the config ?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
the niSE session talks to underlying IVI drivers using the IVI Switch session underneath, so any additional opening of IVI Switch session to the same device will cause the two driver sessions (that keep the information about the state of the hardware connections) to be either one or both out of synch with the actual hardware state). Because of the architecture of the underlying IVI drivers, niSE session cannot know if and what someone did to the instrument using IVI Switch session.
Therefore, it is not adviseable to use IVI Switch session while having another session open to the same device. If you need to use the invasive operations - which is anything that changes the state of the device, such as Reset and possibly self-test (self-test may be implemented as an operation that cycles relays and it may not but you can't be sure), you must make sure that one session is open and closed before another type of session is open.
The ni Switch Executive Open Session calls IviSwtch_init (with ID Query and Reset set to true) and CloseSession closes the IVI Switch sessions with the call to Close. The niSE session does not make calls to either reset or self-test explicitly.
Always attempt to perform all the operations on the same piece of hardware using the same API. If you need to reset switches, use the niSE_DisconnectAll function. If you need to perform the self-test operation, open a session to IVI Switch and perform the self-test, and then close it before opening the session to niSE virtual device.
There is also a back-door possibility that you can obtain the IVI Switch session that has been open for the constituent devices by niSE, but you must make sure that whatever you do with that session leaves the state of the switch intact when you get back to making calls to the niSE session. If unsure, you can always call niSE_DisconnectAll() as the first thing coming back to the niSE session to ensure that the state stored in niSE session matches the state on the actual hardware.
Again, it is best not to use both sessions, but rather pick one and try to perform all operations with it before switching to another type of session.
