Switchable graphics

hello
I used my t400 2764cto on ONLY the dedicated graphics card (ati radeon 3400)
currently I tryed to use the switchable graphics option from bios. when I bought the laptop both worked just fine.
now: dedicated graphics works perfect but when I try to use the switchable graphics I get power off by the lcd. I selected primary display as INTERNAL , selected swichable graphics and OS support for swithcable graphics. The laptop powers just as normal , I get the windows logo showing that windows is powering up , and then the LCD powers off. after 1 minute , the laptop restarts and does it all over again. I tried to use only the internal graphics , but after the driver is installed it requires a reboot. after the reebot same problem... lcd power off.
so , internal , or swithcable , after the windows logo (to show that windows in powering up) I get lcd shutdown.
any ideas? I really want to use switchable graphics.
PS: in safe mode , device manager showes both as installed. in normal mode only dedicated ati works.

Did you install the latest Lenovo switchable drivers? Switchable will not work with non-Lenovo ATI and Intel drivers. Best idea is to uninstall all graphics related drivers and install the latest package from the T400 driver matrix.

  • Windows 7 RTM x64 Power Manager and switchable graphics not working

Installed Windows 7 RTM x64 on my T400. After windows update and installing Lenovo's drivers, everything is accounted for. ATI graphics works fine, and I can see the Intel graphics on the shortcut menu. I just cannot manually switch to the built-in graphics, nor did I see the Power Manager. What do I need to do? I have installed the drivers for the power management, even though on the list of driver on lenovo's webpage it says it's only for SL models.
    Help would be appreciated.

Have you installed the Power manager http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/WIN7-BETA.html#powm ?
And after that, make sure you have installed the right driver (the one for switchable graphics): http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/WIN7-BETA.html#m8xswitch
    Hope that helps.
I also have Windows 7 Professional x64 on my T400 and everything works fine (i only uses programs and driver from here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/WIN7-BETA.html

  • AMD 5650/Intel switchable graphics setup configuration woes

I was wondering if someone could help me with my POS HP DV7-4100 ATI Radeon 5650/Intel switchable graphics setup.  I'm so annoyed with this and don't know how to proceed but it looks like I'm not completing the configuration properly.
I have tried seemingly everything so far:
    Catalyst w/ Catalyst-utils
    Catalyst-hook
    Catalyst w & w/out utils-pxp
    Catalyst-total-pxp
Anyway, loading catalyst without xorg.conf seems to get me the closest to a working setup but once I log into Cinnamon, I get a message saying that it has loaded in fallback mode and if I would like to try to restart cinnamon (nothing happens).
This leads me to believe that this is a config issue.
This is the dmesg without an xorg.conf file.

  • W500 with ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 -can't change switchable graphics to "High Performance"

My W500 crashed on me this morning while playing a game, and I ran into a couple blue screens of death. After doing some troubleshooting, I determined that I had an issue with my video card, more specifically that my machine no longer recognizes my ATI Mobility FGL V5700, and only the low quality Intel chipset.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ATI Catalyst drivers, but that did not work.
I also tried changing the switchable graphics back to "High Performance", but when I do, the screen goes completely black. If I put my computer to sleep and then wake it back up, the switchable graphics automatically go back to "Energy Saving", and my display works again, of course with the Intel graphics only.
If reinstalling the drivers doesn't work, and I can't change the graphics back to High Performance mode, does that mean my video card is shot? Any suggestions other than buy a new one or live with the Intel graphics?
I'd try to contact support but unfortunately my warranty just expired a month ago. Seems like everything breaks within a couple months of the warranty expiring. Grrr.

I'm having identical issues. After updating the driver through lenovo update utility, i can no longer get the graphic card driver working. I've tried several different drivers, none of them work, and I'm now stuck here with a useless computer while my deadlines come closer and closer. Are there seriously no offical reply to any of these threads?

  • Windows 8 Consumer Preview: AMD Switchable Graphics - Unswitchable

    Hello everyone,
I have a HP Pavillion dv6-6004tx notebook computer, and I recently upgraded it to the Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Build 8250). I would like some troubleshooting from those who have/are experiencing this and may have found a way around it.
As far as the specs of my computer goes:
    Intel Core i7-2720QM
    6 GB DDR3 RAM
    64-Bit OS
    AMD Radeon HD 6700M
    Intel Graphics Family
The problem lies within my display drivers. Some of you may also have a Switchable Graphics feature installed in your computers. But for those who don't, basically what it is is a feature that allows one to switch their display adaptor from a Power-Saving GPU to a High-Performance GPU, and vice versa.
In my case, as you can see above, the High-Performance GPU is the Radeon 6700M, while the Power-saving GPU is the integrated Intel one. My problem deals with not being able to switch back and forth between them, like I was able to back on Windows 7. As this is a feature of AMD Catalyst Control Center, I have searched their website and they actually have a supported driver version for Windows 8 CP, albeit it still being a beta and sometimes glitchy.
    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Windows8ConsumerPreviewDrivers.aspx
(As you can see, my model: AMD Radeon HD 6000M Series is listed)
After installing the Control Center, I restarted and a pop-up notifcation tells me that:
"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your AMD graphics driver, or enable your AMD adapter using the Displays Manager."
I found this odd at first, as my model clearly was listed. But after some inferencing, I realized that my computer must be running on the integrated Intel graphics by default. This was further reinforced when I tried playing some games and other applications (It would be slightly choppy - as experienced before when I had forgotten to switch back onto High-Performance GPU).
The AMD Radeon card used to have an error (The device won't start. Code: 10) under device manager, but with a fresh install of the driver obtained from AMD, it seems to be working fine. However, my computer is still using the Intel card by default, and I have no way of switching to the other GPU as Catalyst will not start.
Has anyone found a way around this?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I'll give you a two way to make it work!!!!  There is so much incompatibilities with the FIRST METHOD listed, you won't get use a Intel (less power consuming card) GPU to work after the changes! you've got to wait till HP let's it work properly or deal with power hungry AMD GPU even in battery mode .
THE SECOND METHOD listed works without any problem with compatibility in any apps BUT IT IS Require pace and order ( may be exhaustive  for newbie's, no worries listed below got all the info you need to make it work)
    SO the first option:
NOTE:THIS WILL TRIGER THE OUTCONTROL EVENTS SO PRECAUTION METHODS I WILL ADVISE FURTHER AS WE GO STEP BY STEP _ DOWNLOAD CHROME IF YOU RUNNING INTERNET EXPLORER ( GRAPHIC CARD WILL WORK WITH GAMES BUT NOT WITH METRO APPS THEY WILL NOT CRASH JUST NOT LAUNCH
ALL THE METHODS BELOW TESTED BY MYSELF AND GET WORKED YET MANY INCOMPATIBILIES STILL WILL REMAIN USE IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!
as i can tell all the games working properly yet battlefield 3 won't launch
    1.      AT first make sure that windows UPDATE IS SWITCH OFF or let you choose to download and instal (not automaticly or it will update ur device (at device manager) without ur permision and all eforts are gone!
2.uninstall AMD Catalyst from "program and components" at control panel, then uninstal all the devices Intel and AMD at device manager at the control panel  (check unistal driver at intel HD driver)
3.reboot! after reboot download this http://www2.ati.com/drivers/hotfix/win8/amd_catalyst_win8_consumer_preview_[rc10].exe
    and this
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53025.exe       -      300mb
    4. instal sp53025.exe at windows 7 compatibility mode (it'll unpack by default in C:/SWsetup)
then start the istalation make sure u choose a "custom" , THIS IS CRUCIAL - uncheck the CATALYST (check all the rest intell driver amd driver ect.) after the instalation do not reboot
    5.      Next start the instalation of the windows 8 consumer preview driver from AMD.
uncheck all the rest ( after the sp53025 there will be only AMD driver (check/uncheck) and the catalyst (check/uncheck) box available) uncheck the AMD driver and install only the CATALYST driver!!!!
Reboot! Enjoy !!! There will be no CATALYST(only the intel preference and settings where the CATALYST should've be) at the right mouse click but switchable graphic is now awailable LIKE THIS
Unfortunately you'll won't be available to choose between the INTEL and AMD ! AMD is now working by default
All the .exe will now recognize 6770m
AND METRO APPS WON"T WORK!!!!!!! AS internet explorer will crash as you'll open it
SECOND METHOD IF THE FIRST FAILS (WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE IF HANDS ARE STRAIGHT MORE OR LESS)
    FURTHER IS TESTED!
THIS METHOD EXCLUDE THE METRO APPS CRASH AND ALL THE REST INCOMPATIBILITIES WITH EVERY EXECUTABLE PROGRAMS AND GAMES!!!!
Note: Requires knowledge to sign your own drivers, disable signing enforcement at boot and modding some inf files.
I am not responsible for any damage that may arise. This guide is not exhaustive.
    Requirements:
.NET Framework 3.5 -- Can be enabled within Windows 8, in "Turn Windows features on or off"
Windows Driver Kit (WDK) -- Can be downloaded from here
Configure Windows Update to only "Download updates but let me choose wether to install them", and hide both Intel and AMD updates. This is to prevent our driver be updated by Windows.
1.Download the latest switchable graphics drivers from this site: leshcat blog IT Tips & Tricks: Catalyst 12.3 Pre-WHQL UnifL for Switchable Graphics
    2. Run the installer that will extract the contents of the file, by default it will ask you to disable "Signing enforcement of Windows", you will know that it is working after rebooting because a "Test Mode" watermark is added to the desktop, above "Windows 8 Consumer Preview".
    3. At this moment, do not run the AMD installer yet. We need to modify some files. By default, the driver will be extracted to "C:\Drivers\Catalyst 12.3 Pre-WHQL UnifL".
    4. Go to this directory, and open the following file "Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\C7133662.inf"
    Do the following changes:
    In the section [Version] add:
    Code:
    [Version]
    CatalogFile=C7133662.CAT
There is a section that has the listing of all the supported cards. Rename it from "[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]" to "[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.2]"
    It should look like this:
    Code:
    [Manufacturer]
    %ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTamd64.6.1, NTamd64.6.2
    [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.2]
    "%AMD68F2.1%" = ati2mtag_VancouverC_PXAI, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68F2
    "%AMD9519.1%" = ati2mtag_VancouverC_PXAI, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9519
    5. Follow this guide to Test-Sign a Driver Package. (This guide is generic)
    6. After the previous step, you should have a Catalog file and the inf file we modified previously.
    7. Now proceed to run the AMD installer in "Win 7" Compatibility Mode. It is most likely that the driver install will fail at this stage, but the rest of Catalyst software will be installed.
    8. Now install the driver using the "Have disk" method in device manager and your modified INF for both Intel and AMD cards.
9.If you did the test-signing process correctly, the installation will succeed for both cards.
    10. Reboot and enjoy your switchable graphics under Win 8.
I still have to figure out how to make brightness controls to work.
BTW sorry for any grammar mistake, I am not a native English speaker.
    Known issues:
    - Sometimes switching may not work, resulting in BSOD.
    - When AMD gpu is active, Intel driver context menu options are still available.
    Features:
AMD gpu can be turned off, so battery will last longer.

  • Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Problems (Switchable Graphics, Screen Brightness Adjustment, etc.)

Hi guys! I hope you can help me with this.
My laptop is a Lenovo U400 bought last April. I upgraded it yesterday to Windows 8 Pro.
The Upgrade Assistant detected incompatibilities on the following softwares (I'll be mentioning only those I had problems with after the update.)
    -AMD Catalyst Install Manager
    -Catalyst Control Center
    -Lenovo Energy Management
    -Cypress Trackpad
After the update, the following problems occurred
-Windows kept prompting me about the incompatibility of Catalyst Control Center and Lenovo Energy Management
-When I check the Device Manager -->Display Adapters, My AMD Radeon HD 6470M was changed to HD 7400M and has an exclamation point on it indicating a problem. When check Properties it says, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
-I can't manage switchable graphics because the AMD Radeon driver has been stopped by the OS and Catalyst Control Center doesn't work. It says, "Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Control Center."
-My touchpad works but does not support multitouch functions.
-Screen brightness adjustment stopped working both on hotkeys and Power Options.
I tried the following actions to fix the problems:
-Downloaded the new softwares from Lenovo Support but the Catalyst Control Center and Cypress Trackpad still doesn't work. I also tried installing driver software from the AMD site but it still didn't work. [FAILED]
-I tried to use the Cypress Trackpad software for U300s/e and it fixed the problem with the touchpad [FIXED]
-Installed the Energy Management software for Windows 8 but when I click the 'Optimized Battery Health' button, it keeps reverting back to 'Maximum Battery Life'. [PARTIALLY FIXED]
-Resorted to 3rd party software to fix the Switchable Graphics (Catalyst 12.11 Beta from leshcatlabs.net) and it fixed the switchable graphics problem as well as the Catalyst Control Center problem. This is temporary until a working solution or update is available. [TEMPORARILY FIXED]
-All actions trying to fix the Screen brightness adjustment didn't work. [FAILED]
Please do help me on this. Thanks in advance!!!

Yes I own U400 too and I'm using it now. To many forums been read, can't remember which one. Basically, u have to clean AMD and Intel drivers that come along with Win 8. Why? Because the Win8 driver database will lead the device ID "DEV_6760" (if you looking at display adapter device properties) to HD 7400 series instead of HD 6470M, again why? At the bigining only the HD 7400 series already "certified" by Microsoft, while the 6470M out of somewhere. Current CCC (or else) + 6470 drivers, contain also driver for 7400 series in same packages (at least until now, hopefully near future they will release an update). So you can gues where the windows will lead to? Yes 7400 series (certified one). This will explain also why the Energy Management didn't work to= "missing identifier" or we can say "hardware not match".
You have to find a "fix" driver which contain only HD 6470M and install it manually trhu "Have Disk" option, after you claan all AMD and Intel driver. If you success, then install the CCC from Lenovo Support and from ATI ( I use 12.11 Beta8 Net4 CCC - this is a must), but remember to unchek the AMD Display driver when you install both CCC, and leave the rest checked including Intel Component. Then you can download install anything you want =).
Leschat's driver did't work on my and "harm" the system. Believe it or not, I found the AMD 6470M standalone driver on HP website. They call it "SoftPack", which actually contain CCC software.
It's quite tricky thing, that's why not everyone willing to try. But I think it's worth to try, as the risk is not too deep, just backup anything befor you do it. Cheer

  • I need driver for ati switchable graphics 4250/6370 on windows 8

The video driver in HP is only for windows 7, and in the Ati webpage is only for one graphics card and not for switchable mode  under windows 8, please i need drivers for the hp dv7 4267cl model.
i have three notebook of this model for software developers, i need update. any suggestion?
    Graphics card: ATI 4250 / 6370 switchable

    Hello HK_Ariel,
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I understand you are looking for a WIndows 8 ATI driver for your computer. This driver does not exist, as you indicated. You would need to return the computer to Windows 7 to use the switchable graphics.

  • Serious W7 Bug - ALL ATi Drivers for Thinkpads /w Switchable Graphics Technology bricks OS.

Alas, i have found one serious bug for my Thinkpad.
It comes with Switchable Graphics Card Technology, with an Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATi Mobility Radeon 3470 paired together.
I have initially installed Pre-RTM 7260(ok, i know it's leaked), and faced the problem for the first time after installing the ATi drivers from either Windows Update OR ATi's website. However i have downgraded back to Release Candidate as there was stability issues with EXPLORER.exe
Anyway, surprising what i've though to be a show-stopper bug was also present in RC 7100. After installing(or rather, midway through) the driver installation, the screen blinks for a moment and after that, Explorer.exe is nowhere to be found with only wallpaper. OS seems to be bricked as restart does nothing. Only a System Restore prior to installation would solve the issue.
After diagnosing the problem, i have found the issue to be with the Switchable Graphics Card system. In BIOS, it was set to Swithable Graphics, with OS Detection set to Enabled, Thinkpad LCD Display(for output). I tried to set the graphics to either Discrete(ATi) or Integrated(Intel) but when i booted the system up it was in SVGA resolution and DXDIAG stating no graphics found. When it was in Discrete, i tried to install the ATi drivers once again, and although installation was successful, after restarting the same thing happened.
To be fair, i have repeated the drivers installation EXACTLY the same for both Windows 7 Builds(7100 RC and 7260 Pre-RTM) and the same problem occured. I have also tried to install the ATi drivers before the Intel Chipset(and basically the rest) and it's the same nevertheless.
I believe that this is a serious issue with Switchable Graphics Technology for Windows 7 Beta, since we have to make do with the generic Microsoft display adapter alone. I hope Lenovo engineers can put priority a solution for this as soon as possible.

PS: The Ati card is showing a triangle icon in Device Manager too, but i guess updating it brings the same bricking result.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties.
When I installed RC1 (build 7100), it came with a built-in driver that worked just fine for the discrete graphics in my W500.
A few weeks later, I installed the current release Vista driver for integrated graphics (this one) and it is working just fine as well.  Installing the Lenovo driver gave me the ATI control panel (not sure what use that is), otherwise, it didn't affect performance either way.
I have switchable graphics turned off in the BIOS, OS detection turned off, and have the machine set to use the discrete graphics only.  I think it would be a bit much to expect either Microsoft or Lenovo to support the switchable graphics this early in the development of Windows 7.  Besides, the discrete graphics doesn't eat up the battery that much - I still get 3 hours of battery life, which is sufficient for my needs.
Maybe try turning switchable graphics and switchable graphics detection off in your BIOS, that might get you running again.

  • AMD CCC / switchable graphics not working properly

    Hi all,
ok first of all i read bunch of posts on this forums, and on most of them i saw only responds with links and to download and update drivers - and those things seems not to work for most of people. So i decided to write here a post where someone will actually fix this problem because it is common on most of HP laptops.
First of all, i bought my laptop in Qatar while i was on bussiness there.
    Model: Pavilion dv6-6b20se
    Product Number: A6N20EA#ABV
Graphics: Intel HD 3000 and AMD HD 6490
I bought this computer because im working as an architect and designer and sometimes i need it for rendering, and yea i would like to mention that part time i love to play games. So at that time (2 years ago) and for that money it was pretty decent laptop.
So i've never touched anything myself on laptop, i always let my HP Support Assisstant do the work it is on computer. To be honest i didnt even know that this option of Switchable graphics exist. Until yesterday when i put game to play and i got problem wherever i press ESC it closes came and it crashes.
I googled around and I saw that the problem apears when your graphic card is low.
    Requirements for the game:
    Minimum System Requirements
    MinimumOS: Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory: 1 GB RAM for Windows XP / 2 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Graphics: 256 MB (With Pixel Shader 3.0 support)
    DirectX: DirectX 9.0 c compatible
    Hard Drive: 15 GB
    Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible
Supported Chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater, ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater.
Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200 and HD 4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to the video and sound card drivers may also be required.
    Recommended System Requirements
    OS: Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor: 2.6+ GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
    Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, or better
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
    Hard Drive: 15 GB
    Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible
So by looks of specs here and specs of my computer and the game is like 4 years old, it should fly on my computer.
I googled a bit more and i saw that every program reads only Intel HD graphic card and not AMD. Ok so i went and checked tutorilas on youtube how to switch it and there is where my suprise was. When i open CCC as per everyone on internet i dont have Switchable Graphic option - only Power Play. So i read on your website that some computers need to be set in BIOS from Dynamic which was my original setting to FIXED. I did that to but my option when i right click on desktop for switchable graphics disaper and my CCC is not working.
Ok so i went to your website again, was looking for original drivers for my computer. And there are 3 drivers.
    1.AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver
2.AMD/Intel Switchable High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver
    3.Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver
Ok so when i download them, i can install only No.1, other two i get message that i dont have minimum requirements.
so i checked those to, and it says that  you need to have windows 7 which i have since i got this laptop with original licensed product.
The thing is when i install new version of AMD driver and CCC i get switchable graphics option when i right-click on desktop, but when i get in in CCC i get defoult page and there is no option to switch. When i update intel graphics i loose switching. Either way, it wont work, and im stuck with crappy card that i cant use on bunch of programs and games that i need it for.
So please for once give us a bit detailed answer on how we can fix this. Because it is not only me that have this problem, alot of people are having them and they still cant fix this.
Sorry for my lenghty post, but i thought i needed to explain in more debth.
Thanks in front for reading and takning time to answer.

And yea i forgot one thing. When ever i instal newer version of AMD driver in Device manager it changes from AMD HD 6490M to AMD HD 7400M Series. Dont know why it constatnly does that.

  • Windows 7 64-bit: Switchable graphics and Ricoh card reader problem

    Hi guys,
Two problems with my laptop. I'm using a T400, previously installed with Windows Vista Business 32-bit.
Switchable graphics worked well until I formatted and installed Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (I got the RTM through MSDNAA). Now, Windows can only detect either the discrete graphics or integrated graphics at one time. When the BIOS was set to switchable graphics and enabling the detection of switchable graphics on Windows, it could only detect the Intel integrated graphics. When I try to switch to High Performance graphics through the Lenovo power manager, the screen flashes once, and the ATi graphics card appears on the device manager with the code 10 error (cannot start device). Also, compared to this image, my power manager window that opens with left-click does not have battery stretch and switchable graphics options. I have to right-click to switch my graphics.
After some tinkering, I managed to activate the graphics card through the BIOS by switching it to discrete graphics only and disabling switchable graphics detection by Windows. Now the device manager shows the ATi card only, the Intel integrated graphics is gone. I understand that it should show both display adapters in the device driver when the ATi card is active: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70495.html#g4
The second problem is with the Ricoh card reader. I managed to install the drivers properly, but the device shows up with a code 12 error (This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use) in the device manager. That error appears on 6 items in the device manager:
    Ricoh Memory Stick controller
    Ricoh SD/MMC Host controller
    Ricoh xD-Picture card controller
Ricoh 1394 OHCI Compliant host controller
Ricoh R/RL/5C476(II) or Compatible CardBus controller
SDA Standard Compliant SD host controller
Additionally, 6 error messages appear during every boot up, which I think is related to these 6 devices:
    ERROR
Resource Conflict - PCI in slot 07
    Bus:15, Device:00, Function: 00 (it ranges from function 00  to 05)
AND disabling the device through device manager results in a BSOD.
I've seen some people post about the Ricoh problem, but didn't have any resolution (at least for those who had the boot up error message too). The switchable graphics problem seems quite common too but in my case it seems like it is working fine EXCEPT for the fact that only one graphics adapter can appear on the device manager at one time and I can't do switching at all. Anyone know if I can somehow solve this? Sorry for the wall of text and two-problems-in-one. I put them together because I don't know if one problem is affecting the other as both problems appeared at around the same time.

As far as the graphics goes it's well accpeted the only way at present to switch is though the bios manually. There is currently no drivers that enable users to switch from within Win7. Know it's a pain but will just have to wait.

  • How can enable switchable graphics in Windows 8.1 (Bootcamp)

So I just dropped $3,000 on a high end (late 2013) 15" rMBP and immediately installed Windows 8, and then 8.1, through Bootcamp. I need Windows for a lot of engineering programs, as well as occasional gaming. I bought a MacBook because I prefer OSX for programming - I love Ubuntu, but my previous laptop had driver issues (ironically enough, also due to the graphics card) that would cause it to overheat and only give me about 45 minutes of battery life.
After using it for a little, I realized that the MacBook was VERY hot. I closed all of the power intensive applications and proceeded to browse reddit on low brightness and power saving settings to let it cool down, but it did not cool down much. I shut it down, and turned it on about 15 minutes later, when it had successfully cooled down. I realized that just being booted into Windows caused the laptop to get unreasonably warm - I'm assuming that it's because I have the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics card in it. I can not seem to find an option to enable power saving graphics.
Is there any way to use the integrated Intel graphics rather than the discrete card? Not being able to run Windows reasonably well would really make me regret this purchase, especially when I could have bought a different laptop for much less and installed a Linux distro on it.
    Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, but I think the above post is bad advice.  It's unlikely to be a fan issue as these are generally controlled by firmware.  If your laptop is getting very hot in Windows with only minimal and light use then that suggests a power management issue.
The first thing you'll want to do is check that your Power Management settings are not set to "High Performance".  A lot of people select this option thinking it gives them the most out of their computer and hardware purchase without realising what it does and that it comes with significant issues and tradeoffs.
What the High Performance setting does is disable CPU throttling, forcing the CPU to run at its maximum speed constantly (on all cores) and draw its maximum power load, even when not required.  This causes the laptop to heat up very hot very quickly even if you aren't doing much, while simultaneously killing battery life.  If you found a way to replicate this behaviour in OS X (and turn graphics switching off) you'd find the laptop would get equally hot and fans would ramp up to maximum speed just to try to keep things cool.  If you hear your fans spinning at maximum then that is evidence that fan control is working.
It's a very unnatural behaviour and there are almost no situations where you ever need to use it.  Microsoft should really make an effort to hide it and make it harder to access.  High performance sounds nice and "Why wouldn't I want my laptop to run with high performance" is what most people think.  Of course, Microsoft isn't very good at understanding what people think.
For most purposes "Balanced" is the Power management setting you'll want to use and this more closely reflects what Apple uses in OS X.  Failing this, it could be that whatever software you're using is very badly coded for power management, but this is less likely and unlikely to cause the severe heating issue you described.
Finally, there's no need to regret your purchase.  It's an amazing laptop and the best way to run Windows in my opinion.  The only thing missing I can think of is switchable graphics driver support but this isn't anywhere near as severe a problem as what you've described.

  • W7/64-bit on W500 - Switchable Graphics problem

    Hi,
Did a clean install Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) on my Thinkpad W500 (4062-3CG).
Having problem with "ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows 7".
ATI driver won't load, so default Intel chipset is used with poor graphics as a result.
I have also tried "Windows 7 BETA Drivers and Utilities" with no luck.
Yesterday the graphics worked for a short period of time, that was after remoting my Thinkpad with RDP? very strange. But after reboot graphics was back to non functional again.
    Any ideas?
    TIA
    Johan

Did you apply Lenovo driver packages in any specific order? Don't really understand what I missed?
My plan was to do a "clean" W7/64 install and after that run ThinkVantage System Update 4.0 for latest drivers.
In my case ThinkVantage System Update 4.0 could not start without Access Help for Windows 7 installed, that was the first dependency problem.
However, after that ThinkVantage System Update 4.0 run successfully and everything works fine but the ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows 7.
The ThinkVantage System Update 4.0 applied latest updates for everything including the BIOS. When I try to run BIOS update separately for getting around the graphics problem it says BIOS version is OK and no update needed.
Tried to disable Switchable Graphics in BIOS-setup using Discrete but that does not fix my problem?

  • Windows 7 and switchable graphics stays in "Energy Saving" mode

I installed the latest switchable graphics drivers from Lenovo, and I can't switch to High Performance mode.  It always uses my integrated graphics even when I try to select it from the power manager battery menu.
I tried updaing to power manager 3.25 and the latest bios, but still the same issue.  anyone have any solutions?

try right clicking the batter icon>go to switchable graphics>high performance.

  • U330 + Windows 7 and Switchable Graphics Issue

Just installed the beta version of Windows 7. Only problem I'm having is dealing with switchable graphics. Can't really get it to switch between graphics card. I think it's using ATI which is drawing too much power. Anyone know a way around this? I don't expect this laptop to support Windows 7 yet but it's nice if anyone got any answers.

Maybe right, even if Windows 7 is just a rebuild of Vista kernel and such. When I try to switch to performance I notice the USB device connected sound. And the disconnection sound right away (0,1sec later). I hope lenovo will support Win7 on our laptops too

  • Radeon HD 8750m switchable graphics driver BY HP is not working on Windows 8.1

    Hello all,
    I have  laptop Envy 6-1200el.
It's a good machin but I have always been annoyed by video drivers trouble.
When I bought my PC last year it worked good when we had Windows 8, but the video drivers didn't work properly already there.
The drivers made troubles when I tryed to start some 3D applications as Batman: Arkham Asylum. The problem was the HP video driver. That driver is made by Radeon HD drivers plus Intel HD 4000 series all together.
To make the two video cards working together properly you cannot use intel driver installation first then the AMD catalyst installation utility, but you need a driver installation utility that installs the two video cards both, otherwise the switchable graphics will not work properly and 3D applications won't start.
When I had Windows 8.1 update I had absolutely to find a new driver. I downloaded the automatic utility from AMD site and luckily it downloaded an updated driver that was including and installing together both the video cards properly. Since there my laptop started to work very good in everithing.
Some days ago I had to format my PC and that good video driver got lost.
I installed almost everithing including windows 8.1 update but I sadly discovered that on AMD site it was downloadable only the Radeon HD driver not including any more switchable graphics installation and Intel HD driver.
I have now installed the video driver given by HP on the right laptop portal, but this driver IS SO BAD!!!
HP says that it's an update driver working properly on Windows 8.1 but it's false!
MY PC WITH THAT HP DRIVER IS MAKING MANY TROUBLES:
    - 3D GAMES ARE NOT STARTING OR NOT WORKING PROPERLY;
    - PASSING THE MOUSE ON THE NEW START BUTTON ON WINDOWS 8.1, THE BUTTON BECOMES BLACK!
    - HP UTILITY CENTER IS NOT OPENING;
    - HP SUPPORT ASSISTANT IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY;
    - THE SYNAPTICS MOUSE DRIVER DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY, THE DOUBLE TOUCH DOESN'T WORK ETC.;
    - iNTEL DRIVERS INCLUDED ON THAT HP PACKAGE ARE OLD;
    - SWITCHABLE GRAPHICS DOESN'T WORK GOOD AND IS NOT ABLE TO ADDRESS SOME 3D CHARGES TO THE RIGHT CARD.
PLEASE HP RELEASE AN UPDATE! pLEASE MAKE A REAL COMPLETE DRIVER THAT IS REALLY ACTUAL AND IS REALLY WORKING ON WINDOWS 8.1 WITHOUT CONFLICTS, WITHOUT GRAPHICS ERRORS ETC.!!!
THIS SITUATION IS UNACCETTABLE, SOLVE IT PLEASE!

    Hi Fotoji,
I want to be honest, it's very disappointing for me to be treated like a child.
You should know that most of the people you meet here in this forum are not n00bs and the causes you suggest to consider haveall already been excluded in every way you would try yourself too!
The fact you say, that the issues are caused by a 'broken OS' are so disappointing and unbelievable!
I work in IT field since I was 14yo and now I am a graduated 28 who knows very well how to handle a PC in a clean and smart way.
Look, many of these issues was already 'on' when I bought and started my PC for the very FIRST TIME.
The video drivers needed are auto-installing drivers containing intel and AMD video drivers both and installed together at the same time.
The first day I had my PC the system was VIRGIN, I simply installed steam then ran 'Batman:Arkham Asylum' to make a try, it has never ran up, no matter if the OS is W8 or W8.1, no matter if the PC is new or used for 6 months, that driver has never worked good.
I tryed many things, used HP recovery manager several times in order to make a clean OS new installation, but it always went like that.
Recently I sent my computer to HP Italy fro an hardisk problem, replaced in warranty. The laptop came back CLEAN, perfect, with W8.1 and all the new recent drivers.
The problem was the same, games did not run or ran badly, the start symbol was black, HP Utility Center didn't work.
So tell me where's the magic when I unistall in a CLEAN AND CORRECT way those video drivers, why EVERITHING COMES TO WORK SO GOOD BACK????
Some months ago I knew that those drivers where so bad so I tryed to download the original driver package from AMD site, hoping that they was including the intel video drivers both, and guess...IT WORKED!
Those drivers was including the intel video drivers too during installation, then after a restart I had NO GRAPHICS ERROR, NO HP UTILITY CENTER FREEZE, ANY GAME OR 3D APPLICATION WORKED AT LEAST 2x FASTER AND NOT ANY COMPATIBILITY PROBLEM IN ANY STATE OR SITUATION.
Unfortunately my laptop started to have maybe some motherboard power problems and my HDD passed away then HP took my pc and fixed it.
When it came back it was perfect again, virgin, with all the update installed, with those bad HP drivers installed again, so with all those problems that I found since I bought it: graphics error, compatibility problems, some programs freeze, all WHITOUT TOUCHING ANYTHING!!!
I knew that I would solve it just downloading the right drivers directly from AMD site but UNLUCKILY THE NEW CATALYST 14.4 DIDN'T INCLUDE THE INTEL VIDEO DRIVER ANY MORE.
I had all those compatibility, stability and graphics problems always with a just-formatted computer with all the updates installed, a virgin untouched machine just formatted completely automatically using HP recovery manager or fixed by your engeneers!!!
The only case everithing worked very good was when I used the original AMD's drivers, when these used to inclued the intel graphics drivers too during AUTO-INSTALLATION.
I am replying now using a just-formatted machine automatically and perfectly just using HPRECOVERY MANAGER,and updated using WINDOWS UPDATE and HP SUPPORT CENTER self updater.
So guess what???? When I uninstall in A CORRECT WAY your HP video drivers (doesn't matter if the new one or the oldest) everything works good back, and when I used original AMD drivers everything worked so good.
It's so hard to do something wrong about it, the driver installation utility are IDIOT-PROOF, you cannot do anything during installation except for clicking the RESTART button.
So AMD used to make perfect drivers and now not any more, sadly, every issue disappears without your driver installed, HP sent me a perfect virgin computer with the same issues.
So please, don't tell me that AMD is able to make better software, don't tell me HP is not able to handle a recovery and sent me a pc with the same issues, don't tell me I probably made a bad use of my VIRGIN laptop after years spent on SGI workstations UNIX based.
I know how to keep a pc clean, and I'm telling you something more: the new synaptics mousepad driver package you are giving from HP website and HP support center DOESN'T WORK GOOD TOO!!!
Once you accept the auto update it starts with the self installation, but after the restart gess what?? The double toe gesture used to simulate the right click doesn't work any more!!!
No matter if you try to change any option in the control panel, no matter if you have windows 8 or 8.1, just try to unistall that and reinstall the old synaptics mouse driver and, OH WOW MAGIC, IT WORKS GOOD BACK AGAIN!!!
    So now what?
Are you thinking that HP engeneers who fixed my laptop wasn't able to re-install windows and drivers?
The IT engineers working for HP are maybe also n00bs that can't handle a pc format and send me a BROKEN OS as you said?
I am magically breaking my os system just clicking one time on clean automatic HP recovery button then click on the automatic update buttons twice????
Perhaps AMD is able to make more stable end recent drivers than HP does???
(considering that aven the last HP graphics drivers update is so bad because the intel side of the package is very old and you can recognize it just making a comparison with the new intel additional control panel!)
I don't need to recover the system for the 4th time in a proper way (plus HP fix would be the 5th!), I know these silly things.
I need to be taken seriously and not be treated like a grandmother who's not able to switch-on a smartphone!
I would challenge anyone to operate on my computer and try to solve it using Teamviewer and HP's drivers!
I think I've been quite hard nut hopefully clear, so please do something more than giving me a manual fro grannies.
    Thank you.

  • Windows 8.1 and AMD radeon HD 6700m switchable graphics on HP pavilion dv7

    Hello all
First would like to give positive feedback because my former problem was solved here but this thing appears again.
I have HP pavilion dv 7
    i7 -2670QM (2.20ghz)
    (8 GB Ram)
    Windows 8.1
So my problem is with the switchable graphic as it is stated in the subject.
I had windows 7 previously and I had no problems with switchable graphics-
When I bought licenced win 8 the problems started and are continuing in my 8.1 upgrade.
I tried several thing, from turning off switchable mode in BIOS, turn it off in win desktop, uninstalling drivers or blocking drivers and it still doesn't help
It's a shame that with a computer like this I can't play a bit better games that I was able to when I had win7.
The main problem is that when the game instals it checks your computer and tell you if it's ok or not-and everytime I get that I have intel HD3000 graphics. and not AMD radeon hd 6700m graphic card.
Can anybody tells me how to fix this thing? I don't have any problems in display adapter-all drivers are good to go, i have the latest amd catalyst software.
It would be a shame to buy win 8 if 7 was good and better working on this issue.
    Thank you for help

    Hello again GregaSlo,
It is good to hear from you again!
To prevent your system from crashing, and gain access to your fingerprint reader, I recommend performing a backup and recovery of your system's operating system. This can be done by following this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7). This should help recover your system back to factory defaults.
