Switched computers, how do i restore my iweb files

I know I have done this before. All my iweb pages are saved on my mobile me account. How do I get those web pages to open on my new computer. I think I dragged the files to somewhere but I don't remember where. I know its possible

If by +"All my iweb pages"+ you mean iWeb's Domain file, you're in good shape - restore that from MobileMe to your Mac and double-click it to open in iWeb. Alternatively you can restore iWeb's Domain file from a local backup you've made — perhaps on that +"90 GB EXT. HD"+ of yours.
But if you're referring to the published folders of HTML, be aware that only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • I built a website, using iWeb.  I backed up daily with Time Machine and OS 10.6.  My HD crashed.  I replaced the HD and installed 10.5. But now I can't restore iWeb and my domain file. How do I restore my site files on the new drive?

I obviously dont know how to use this forum...my question to the community seems to be the truncated phrase in the title block above..you can scroll thru it to see my whole question....basiclly,.my question is:  How do I restore my iWeb domain files which are kept in  user>library>applicationssupport>iWeb>domain in my Time Machine date listings...to a newly installed disc.  I had a disk crash, removed the failed drive and installed another. I then installed OS 10.5 (I didn't have a copy of my 10.6). Now I'm having difficulty figuring out how to get the iWeb files from the Time Machine external drive used with the 10.6 to the new drive running 10.5...any help muich appreciated....!!

Go to to your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder in the Finder and then enter  Time Machine.  Go back to the last backup that has the domain file, select it and use the Restore button.

  • How do I open an iWeb file with Texteditor?

How do I open an iWeb file with Texteditor? I want to embed a midi file but I don't see any of the iWeb files under my document folder. Where are they and how do I open them in Texteditor? Thanks!

first you have to publish the site. If you publish to idisk you can find the html files there and edit them there. If you publish to a folder find the file within that folder.
you can use textedit, but check the help files to make sure you configured it properly for html.
be aware you would have to edit the html file each time you republish the edited page.
    good luck

How do I restore my iTunesU files on my iPhone, to my PC without overwriting any iTunesU files already on my PC (rather than the default sync from PC to iPhone)?
    Thanks.

I'm not sure why you would want to do that - if you want iTunesU files on your PC, then download them again (assuming they are free?).

  • I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.

I have done an icloud backup on my iPad mini. I now need to get back one of the iMovie videos that I backed up. How do I restore one individual file?

You can't. When you restore from a backup it will restore everything in the backup. You might be able to find a third party app that will allow you to extract individual files from an iTunes backup, but not with an iCloud backup.

It depends on what has been done with the note before it was deleted.  For instance, if it was saved to a previous backup, simply restore the device to that backup.

  • Trying to restore previous iWeb files after hard drive was reformatted.

I had to have a clean install on my MacBook last week and had my iWeb files backed up but I'm having trouble figuring out how to import the files or restore iWeb to the way it was. Any thoughts? Or is it just another lack of support and thinking on Apple's part?

No. You just need to have backed up the right files.
iWeb stores info under User/Library/Application Support/domain.sites and it is this domain.sites file that you need to be able to alter anything in iWeb.
If you published your site to a local folder thinking that was a back up, then it is not, as iWeb has no import facility and is unable to open already published html files.
If you don't have your domain.sites file then you'll have to re-build your site again in iWeb.

  • How do I transfer my iWeb files to a new computer?

I recently did a clean install of Yosemite to my new iMac, getting rid of years of unneeded files.
I have successfully reinstalled all the programs I use frequently, but I am stumped on how to transfer my iWeb files so they work on my new computer.
I have transferred the preferences and the domain files, but they still do not show up when I open iWeb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
And......how I wish Apple would bring iWeb back. It is the best app for making websites I have ever used.

Place the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.  If there's no iWeb folder create one and put it in there.  Now try to launch iWeb and see if it will find and open the Domain file.
If you still can't open the domain file do the following:
To open your domain file in Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script"/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"
    delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
NOTE: Since Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks and Yosemite go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

I have iWeb files that are on one Mac and want to import to another Mac.
How do I do this with having one domain file, completely erase the other domain file that has different files?
This is BRUTAL trying to move, copy and import iWeb files between family Macs!!!

You are actually better to split your domain file so that each site can be loaded individually into iWeb and published separately. See....
    http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWebMultiplewebsites.html
You'll note from this that you can also use a third party application to handle these file and iWebsites used to have a merge function. I don't use it so I don't know if it works with the latest version of iWeb.
