Switched from PC to Mac mini, can't open my JPEG pics with iPhoto 5 - HELP!

Hello all!
I'd really appreciate any help on this. I have lots of family and "amateur" artsy photos (nature scenes, architecture, etc) that are from a Kodak digital camera in JPEG format. I can open the files with "Preview" but iPhoto won't open them & calls them an unrecognized file type. Any thoughts please!?!?
Thanks

I'm suspecting that you're not using iPhoto properly.
1) Create a temporary folder on the desktop and put the pics there.
2) Open iPhoto and use the "Import" function to access the photos.

Switchingfrom PC to Mac mini, enough power to perform tasks?
Tasks:archiving slides, scans at 9600 DPI result 2.5 GB files, some of the scans are around 60 MB files. Also intend to edit video. Mostly working in Photoshop cs5.
    Miniconfiguration:
    i7processor with discret video memory
500GB HD (with external USB 3 storage)
4x1GB RAM  and add another 4x1 later
    PCDell XPS 8300 configuration:
    i7processor
500GB HD (with external USB 3 storage)
    12-16GB RAM
Don't know if the mini will be enough of a machine. It can only go up to 8GB RAM, but I know the architecture is different. Also, does the minirun cool and quiet? This is a home environment.
ps operating system is Mac OS X , don't know about the (10.7.2) .

I have both the new Mini Core i5 and my existing Gateway Core 2 Quad PC; both running 64 bit OS.  If you're running 32bit OS on a PC, only the first 4Gb is recognized and utilized.  The Mini is Lion, the PC is running Vista 64 and I do digital media stuff both for a living and also for fun.  First things first..
You need at least 8Gb of RAM to start with the Mini if you're going to deal with HD video and working with CS5 in a 64bit environment.  8Gb of RAM on the Mini just flies, 16Gb even better; albeit noticeable faster than 4Gb especially if you are working with 64bit compliant applications -- I am.  My Mini came stock with only 2Gb of RAM, but a pair of Corsair Mac Memory certified RAM I bought from a PC store did the trick.  According to OWC (macsales.com), the Mini can be upgraded up to 16Gb of RAM, eventhough Apple official stance is 8Gb.  Secondly, throw in a SSD (Solid State Drive); this will speed bootup and applications plus act as a page memory place just in case 8Gb of RAM isn't enough, which is already the case as I am using 64bit applications in dealing with RAW images and HD videos.  But because SSD drives are fast, there isn't any lag at all on the Mac.  I have a SandForce 6G SSD drive installed on my Mini as a second drive (Mini Mid 2011 has 2 drive bays inside).  With the PC, however, you need at least 8Gb of RAM, and even then my PC is complaining that it is running low on memory when I'm working with DXO Optics Pro 7 Elite on RAW files.  So the Mac is more memory efficient in usage compared to the PC.  My PC too has a pair of SandForce RAIDed in 0 mode to help with memory paging and overall performance boost.  The beauty of the PC is that, you have lots of internal bays where you can configure the drives to function in RAID mode, especially RAID 0.  With the Mac Mini, you will only have a few choices; there is no option to add USB 3 storage unless you want to go the Sonnet Thunderbolt to Express 34 card USB 3 route which is severely limited by the Express 34 bus speed.
However, with Thunderbolt, you get faster than USB 3 port speed and is the future.  You can buy the Pegasus RAID array box for Thunderbolt.  It is pricy, but worth the investment.
Last but not least.  Mini mostly runs cool if not pushed.  If it is pushed, it will run warm enough to keep my coffee warm when placed ontop of the aluminium case.  At least, it runs a lot quieter than my PC with those blazing fans spinning at insane speeds when rendering RAW and HD videos (both CPU and GPU).
    Hope this helps.

  • Switching from pc to mac mini

im thinking of changng my pc to a mac mini to take up less space plus im sick of the noise from pc. it is a quadcore 2.5 with a 1gb graphics card. wat would be the best mini to go for im not really worried about performance or games anymore grown out and will just be using the mini for surfing the web n for itunes also bit of wordprocessing il be hooking it up to a jvc 46" tv through hdmi how do i do this and will i get sound cheers dfor ur help

    Hi Monty,
You don't have much choice in the mini - just go for the higher end with max RAM. Yes its just right if noise is what you want to eliminate - super quiet and super cool temps - I don't know of any everyday routine software for music, surfing the web / office apps that uses 4 cores simultaneously so you will not miss your quad core PC, the dual core will be more than adequate.

  • Changed from PC to mac and can't open some file

Mac store transferred my files from PC to mac when purchased iMac.  frequently some of those files will not open and I receive this reason:
Adobe Reader could not open 'file name.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).  This also sometimes happens when I try to open a jpg. and those sometimes are files I have added myself from photos I added.
Is there any way I can recover these?  Or should I just forget it and trash them?

Note, you don't need Adobe Reader to view PDFs in OS X. There is a built-in application called "Preview" which does an excellent job with PDFs. It is faster and it is more lightweight.
When you install Reader, it takes over PDF rendering in your web browsers and it sets itself to the default PDF reader.
This is a bit of a tangent, but I recommend you first try opening the PDFs with Preview, and see if you can open the files. If so, then it's probably a Reader issue. If not, the files are probably corrupt. You may wish to see if you can try transferring them again, if you still have access to them.
As far as JPEGs, Preview can also view them, so give it a try.
If Preview works, then definitely consider uninstalling Adobe Reader. It's a heavyweight, bloated, slow piece of crap.

  • New user - switched from PC to Mac and can't figure out some mail issues

I looked at the software discussions and they didn't have one for something as simple as mail! I've also checked mail help and the online support and Switch 101 and Mac 101. All of them tell me I can do something but not how in very simple steps.
In the Apple store they were using all this fancy stationery for e-mail. Even my e-mail program looks different from the one in Mac 101.
I want to do 2 things. Use stationery and write those little "to-do" notes and I can't figure out how. On Mac 101 it shows a message and right below the address lines is a box with stationery menus, like birthdays, invitations etc. I don't have that box. I have the address lines and then jut the place where you write the e-mail. No stationery, no notes.
    Thanks,
    Susan

I am on a new message. There is no photo browser (I'd do a screen shot if I knew how but I only know how to do that on a PC).
On a new mail message (I went to file and clicked new message) I have the 3 dots in the left corner (to close, minimize, etc) and under that some icons (send, chat, attach, address colors, save as draft). The the To: line, the CC: line, the Subject: line and account line (next to the account line i have a drop down box to customize) Then the body of the e-mail that I type in. Thats it, no stationary, no photo browser.
Again my mail program is 2.1.1 and from my serching it seems that 3.0 is the latest mail program. I clicked the little apple in the left upper corner of my mail program and had it search for updates but it said there were none.
This is so frustrating to buy a new computer with old software. I'm guessing I have leopard but I have no idea how to see what version of the OS I have. Again I bought this thing on Friday, 3 days ago.

  • How can I open 2 differents pages with iphoto

I would like to see my photos on 2 differents desk or pages what could I do?

In order to open a Pages 3 document in Pages 5, you first need to open and save it in Pages 4.
Pages 4 is a MUCH better applicatation than 5, in any case, if you can get your hands on it.

If you use the organizer, you need to buy the boxed version of PSE 12. You can usually find it at big box stores and online retailers for less than adobe's upgrade price, if you shop around. You need the boxed version because you get a serial  number that works on both platforms, and you will need to install PSE 12 in windows first, upgrade your catalog, then make a full backup to a removable drive and restore from that to the mac, after installing PSE 12 there.
If you don't use organizer, it doesn't matter.

  • Gettting Ready to switch from PC to MAC-Can I use my back-up catalogue?

Hi!  I am getting ready to switch from PC to MAC.  My pics and back-up catalogue files are on an external hard drive.  I am wondering if I can just use an up-to-date back-up catalogue to place in lightroom on my new MAC and then be up to speed.  Will that work?
    Thanks so much, Leora

Yes, this should be fine! You may wish to give your catalog (the .lrcat) a new name (prefix) when you first copy it to your Mac. This will force build a new Previews folder on the new machine, sometimes a very good thing; sometimes wholly unnecessary.....

Normally you should be able to drag and drop them onto the drive, provided the drive is Mac formatted. Have you already tried that?
