Switched to BT, now getting really slow speeds

Hi, I moved to BT yesterday from EE. I've noticed that since the switch over, my speed has fallen drastically. Whilst I didn't check speeds on the old EE connection (it was running fine with multiple devices logged in throughout peak times & I never had cause to check), it was definitely much quicker. Now I'm on BT, I can't download anything, or watch video on demand. I've even taken to checking all my e-mail on my iPhone because outlook seems to take forever now. I've done a speed check, and I'm getting 0.24MB wired, 0.20 wireless (next to router) and 0.18 wireless in another room. This was without any other device connected. Can anyone think of any reason for the dramatic fall in service from switching broadband provider and anything I can do to fix it? To save time, I'll mention that my phone socket does not have a test port. Also, in case this does not pan out, does anyone know if there is a 'cooling off period' in which I can cancel and return BT's router? Thanks, Harry

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

Reset hub and now getting extremely slow speeds...

Hi there,
So I have had bt broadband for 3 months and had nothing but problems. The speed is very slow, though I do live in a rural area so somewhat to be expected. However in the evenings I have noticed I can get extremely high pings (1000+) and slow speeds (below 0.5 mbps).
Recently however my usual daytime speeds of around 1.2 mbps shot up to around 3 mbps, which to me is quite high! (compared to what I have been getting).
Though it dropped off a bit over the past few days (to around 2.2 mbps) it was still working ok, until last night when I reset my homehub as my sister was unable to connect to it at all.
Since then I have had nearly none existant speeds. Even getting on here was a mission. I am getting speeds of around 0.10 mbps, though my ping seems to vary wildly from around 50 all the way back up to silly numbers.
I attempted to use the bt speed test, but it told me it couldn't get a reading cos my line was too slow!
I did however get one eventually from BT wholesale as below. (it won't let me copy it in?...)

Really getting fed up with the unreliable and slow connection. When added to the problems getting a line installed in the first place (it took 3 months!) and problems I have had in the past, I am seriously looking to see what other options I have, but there aren't many good providers that will set us up out here

I currently have the hub connected to the master socket via a filter. I have tried on the main socket and master socket with two different filters and nothing changed...
As for the btspeedtester, I was unable to successfully run that...It just says my connection may be too slow (no kidding!)
Finally, regarding the quiet line test...I don't actually have a phone at the moment. I only wanted broadband as I rarely make phone calls from the house and use my mobile. I am looking to get one for the sole purpose of fixing this issue (and ringing bt to have a whinge at them)

After updating to 5.1 data speed gets really slow

I did update to 5.1 this morning and the data speed for internet and app gets really slow.
I can not use internet and apps like usual at all.
I called att customer service twice and they just said there is no problem.
I reset my phone several times already and nothing get better.
Now i have 4G network sign next to the signal bar and is that because of my phone (4gs) doesn't work for 4g network?
What should i do?

try restarting your iphone. then if still slow, try reset network settings. <-- this should fix your problem.
if still not clear your cookies and cache.

Really slow speeds during the daytime?

So i've been with BT for as long as i can remember (Broadband Option 3) and for as long as i remember it's never been that great. Not bad, but not great. Apparently i should be getting up to 8mbps but i was normally around 3mbps, which was never slow enough to bother complaining about. But in the last 2 weeks for some reason im getting extremely slow speeds during the day. From 1pm - 1am i've have around a 1mbps (if im lucky), and from 1am - pm i'll have 5 - 6mbps (which is faster than normal). Im really not sure what's going on, but it makes it impossible to do anything other than use text based websites during the day, which is a pain. Im about 250 metres away from my local exchance so i don't see why im getting 1mbps all day.
Also the wireless connection in my house is awful. My laptop that's 2 ft away from my router (BT Homehub 1 or maybe 1.5 im not sure) and it's getting a 2/5 bar signla strength. I could connect to my neighbours wifi and have a stronger signal. Addmitiedly the Home Hub is pretty wore down, so would getting the Home Hub 4 improve the wireless connection or the speeds problems? Is there any way to get it without paying £60? I mean i could switch to sky broadband, get a new router, and get a years worth of broadband for cheaper than that. The only thing keeping me with BT right now is BT sports, and i can't even any BPL games on that anymore since my connection is too slow when the games are on.

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?

Touch 1st Gen now seems really slow....

Hi I have a 1st Gen touch 16Gb. got v3 S/ware on. been using it no problems.
It just seems now its getting really slow. I dont have that many apps on, prob about 20, music and videos, but theres still about 2gb of space on.
It just seems now its slow in moving between screens, surfing in safari, and general use, it all is a lot slower than it used to be. I know that my 1G has a slower CPU than the newer one, but it didnt use to be like this.
Is it worth my doing a factory reset and then a re-install of the backup, or ill it be the same again after the restore?

Before you go that far, have you tried simply actually turning off your touch? (hold the sleep/wake button until a red slider appears, and then slide the slide to off. Turn the touch back on by holding down the sleep/wake switch until a silver apple appears; wait several seconds for the touch to reboot).

Thank you very much for your reply gdgmacguy :) I did all you suggested apart from restore as new device . Didn't know I could do that . After restore I did restore from back up only, as I didn't want to end up without contacts details on my phone. If I restore as new device how do I get my all contacts? Still will have to use back up? Sorry if it sounds like I don't know what i am doing, i just have no one to ask who would know. Thank you

My macbook works well while connected to the charger, but using the battery it gets really slow

My macbook pro 2011 yosemite 10.10.1, (2,3 GHz Intel Core i5 / 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 / Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB) recently started to present a problem that when using only the battery, it gets really slow, but connected to the charger, it operates normally. I have already taken to a technical assistance but was not presented any problem in the battery. And when I open activity monitor it shows that the kernel_task process uses almost 100% CPU and so is almost 0% idle, so it is almost impossible to use the computer (using the battery). Is there anything I can do to prevent this process using 100% CPU?

My recommendation for a SMC reset was initiated by your posts indication poor performance when under battery power. Often a SMC reset will correct bad battery behavior but apparently not in your case.

Photoshop CS5 interface gets really slow *only* when an image is open

So this is really odd. Photoshop gets really slow when any image, regardless of size is open. When there are no images open it runs smoothly. The interface gets really laggy, filter usage, tool selection or any other usage is really sluggish, but only with an image open, even if it's a single pixel.
I've tried different performance settings - changing where the scatch drive is, how much memory to allocate, what the cache levels are set at, enabling/disabling openGL, etc. It makes no difference if it's after a fresh reboot or if it's been on for days. No software has changed since the upgrade. Memory test don't show any issues and no other application has this problem - Illustrator, After Effects, Maya, Mudbox, etc. are all fine.

I'd think it would be a memory issue if all apps had similar problems, or if PS had issues when just being open. It's odd that it happens only when an image is open.

Modem keeps rebooting AND really slow speeds

Hey guys
I came onto this forum because for the past few weeks my homehub 2 has been increasingly rebooting randomly. It was a nuisance before when it happened occasionally, but in the past 5 hours (from about 10pm until about 3am)it has rebooted about 20 times! Extremely annoying when your trying to watch streaming video!!! Iv gone through lots of posts in this forum trying to do some research and have come to a few conclusions:
1. No point phoning bt
2. Will probably need a replacement modem
3. I have been experiencing absolutely dismal speeds without realising.
My dad set up our bt account but I believe it to be 2mb broadband (if its 8mb its even more shocking!) Whether it's day or night my download speed never ever reaches above 230k/s Iv tried downloading from microsoft, p2p, download etc. Sometimes I struggle to get 50k/s at peak times!!
This has been the norm since I moved here 4 months ago. I figured these speeds were normal because I know that you never do get the speed your supposed to but after reading on here I think now that these are FAR too low!! My exchange is only 1.6km by road from me (867m direct). My IP Profile will be affected by my homehub constantly rebooting but would it really make as much difference as this?? I will post my stats:

I just tried downloading from microsoft again just now (6am) and the speed jumps between 200k/s and 210k/s
This is 6am so not at all peak time! The speed achieved is about right for my connection but how come I never get more than 230k/s when actually downloading anything??
Id appreciate anyone to shed light on this, I'm not an expert! I know I will probably have to phone helpdesk.. But I know exactly what pointless things they will ask me and tell me to do and it will drag on and on.

My iMac is getting really slow. It used to boot in about 30 seconds, now it's over 3 minutes. I am thinking I may backup photo's Videos and such and format the hard drives and re-install OSX. Any thoughts on this?

This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot. I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac. I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me. (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.) Any advice is welcome. Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.

In addition to Mike's suggestions, you only have 4GB of RAM and Mavericks does use more RAM than other versions. You may also want to look at the apps that startup on login and the possiblity of upgrading RAM.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

This has been my speed for four days, I wish this was the first time this is happened but it seems to happen on a weekly basis now. Ringing up the call centres is very counter-productive and since I work from home that's what I have been too.
Does anybody have any experience in getting into contact with the right people that can fix/upgrade/blow up and replace an exchange?

I can't run a btspeedtest, it doesn't work (I put in the correct phone number)

Flash CS4 was running fine now running really slow

I have had Flash cs4 for the mac for several months now and the first project I started was running fine with no sluggishness, I was using it for basic animaton so it was never asking too much. the file size was about 150 mb towards the end which was fine until all of a sudden it just crashed after asking it to do something simple and it started running slowly since, I'd barely made any changes but after the 'crash' selecting anything on the stage or moving anything would have about a 1 second delay which is frustrating! it runs smoothly on start up for several minutes then will just start running slowly again. I have since started a new project which has the exact same problem and is only 18mb in size! my mac book pro is barely a year old and has plenty of memory etc. I know that many people have reported sluggishness but this was running fine until something 'unknown' happened.
Can anyone help?

Thanks for your help, I did try hiding the larger layers but the rest are really simple and hiding all layers except the one I was working on made no difference.

Hi I had my BT infinity installed on the 26th june working fine untill today. Only getting 3.04 Mbps. Was getting around 74 - 75 mps
