Switched to systemd and now idle disk activity?

Just switched over to systemd and now I'm seeing diskactivity like what I see with windows (or used to with 2k/xp).  Every now there's disk activity in the system.  I logged out to console and it still happens.  I don't see any log files growing.  So what happened ?  it's almost like a heart beat followed later by a single then another.

This is a very poor way to ask a question.  You provide no details whatsoever that might be able to help you find an answer.  But assuming that your problem is simply an i/o issue, I like to use iotop to see what kinds of crap is being written to (or read from) disk.

  • Laptop (Running Windows 8.1) no longer able to print and now see message Active Directory Domain Services is not available

Have a very recent Lenovo Ideapad Laptop running Windows 8.1. Connected via USB port to HP LaserJet Pro CM1415 frw Color MFP Printer. Was able to print fine nearly 2 weeks ago, but something recently happened - either a new windows or office 2013 update
or perhaps I blew away a certain file by mistake. I can see the printer installed but cannot print to it from anything (Word, Notepad, IE, Firefox etc.). The one thing to note is that usually when I plug or unplug a USB related device, Windows 8.1 recognizes
this and makes a certain chime noise, but with the printer USB cable it never makes that noise - making me think that it never fully recognizes the printer. Also when I select the printer (from within the control panel) and right click for properties (via
admin rights) It never lets me fully connect to it.
I have tried all the usual remedies - remove, install all drivers, reinstall printer, Windows update, start/stop print spooler and all other printer related services,  etc. Its really annoying because this printer was working fine nearly 2
weeks ago. Looking for any advice now. Thanks.

    Hi Chris,
    à
I have tried all the usual remedies - remove, install all drivers, reinstall printer, Windows update, start/stop print spooler and all other printer related services, etc.
I noticed that you had reinstalled the printer. Just a confirmation, when un-install this printer, please check
if this printer still exist in registry. For more details, please refer to following KB.
    Registry entries for printing
If printer entry still exist in registry, please delete that printer entry and re-install this printer again,
then check if this issue still exists. (Please backup registry entries before operating registry. It will help us to avoid unexpected issue.)
    àand now see
message Active Directory Domain Services is not available
By the way, would you please let me know where/when get this
Active Directory Domain Services is not available error message? Or provide a screenshot of it?
(Please hide all protected or private information) Please check if all services are running correctly on the computer. Meanwhile, please refer to following article and check if can help you.

  • Pls help: I can't start my mac because I took too much space and now the disk doesn't mount

I am most certain that this is the case: foolishly, I didnt leave much free space and now the disk doesnt want to mount. I tried the single user mode, I also booted from DVD, they appear but the disk utility shows the disk but I cannot repair the disk, because it is unmounted. I tried the basic commands in single user mode, no effect either. I still cant get over the blue screen with the apple logo and a circle running. I need to free up some spasce. Unforetunately, important  files were not backedup, so I really cant delete the whole disk. I need to delete specific files.
I came across this in a post:
/sbin/fsck -yf (optional, but a good idea to run a file system check. If you do this, repeat this command if any problems are found.)
/sbin/mount -uw / anables to read and write via the single user mode
    /usr/bin/cd /Library/Audio
    /bin/rm -R Apple\ Loops  - rm is remove
(and any other deletions that you need to do here)
    /sbin/reboot
The troulbe is, I dont know where are my big files located - so, how do I orientate myself among the folders? Lets say I would delete my itunes libary, which I would later on renew thanks to the back/up, how would I delete them?
Thank you very much for any advice. I really need to make it work.

Probably some error in typing. Copy the command line from Terminal and post it here, exactly as it is.
a way to install applejack or someother helpful software?
AppleJack only works on the boot disk, and only in single-user mode. IMHO, if there is a space or corruption issue on the disk, the last thing you want to do is to install new software on it.
DU once I select repair disk reports ''it could not unmount'' the disk.
If you chose the right disk, you probably have some process using files on the disk or referencing the disk. For instance, if you have Terminal open and present working directory is on the disk, DU will refuse to unmount it. Make sure you've quit all other apps before using DU. If it still refuses to unmount, you can force it in Terminal
    $ diskutil unmountDisk force
and drag the disk from Finder to the Terminal window (there's a blank space after force).
could I somehow use time machine just for my original disk?
I don't know about Time Machine. I suspect you can't use it under your circumstances, but I really don't know.
how to force through adn delete some folders? I still believe that it should solve the problem, shouldnt it?
Not all problems have convenient solutions. If the file system is corrupt (which could well happen when running out of space, let alone the fact that you couldn't boot from the disk and thus the journal couldn't be replayed), then deleting files may not work or may make matters worse. We still don't know why you couldn't boot from the internal disk. It may be because there isn't enough space to create the necessary temp and ancillary files—or it may be because the file system was badly corrupted when the operating system ran out of space.
If you want to stick with it, post here the rm command, as I wrote above. It may or may not work, it may or may not delete the files you want to delete, which may or may not fix the problem. There's no guarantee. It you want to do it right, the only way is to back up everything you can and re-format the internal drive.

Welcome to the Apple Community Robin.
Contact AppleCare(or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.

  • Switched wireless network and now cannot send emails

I just switched wireless network and now cannot send emails. i have checked with my email provider and all settings are correct.

Depending on what wireless network you switched to if it is not connected to your ISPs network most all ISPs block sending mail from clients that are NOT part of there network, IE have an account with them.
So if you switched from your home wired/wireless network that uses XYZ ISP to a friends network that uses ABC as there ISP and you try to send mail through YOUR ISPs Mail servers it will fail because YOU do not have an account with them and you are trying to use a different ISPs mail servers. This is to stop Spam emails being sent out from other mail servers that can't be tracked by the ISP you are connected to.

Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start. If nothing, connect to wall charger for 10 minutes, it may come on itself. If still nothing, keep on charger and Reset, it may take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons while on charger. If still nothing battery may be completely dead and need replacement or something worse.

  • HT3529 I had a iphone 4s with imessage activated, I switched to android and now I can still text other people with iphones but they can't text me. What can I do?

I Had an iphone 4s with imessage activated,  I switched to an android and now I can't recieve texts from iphones that have imessage turned on. What can i do?

iMessage works by linking your Apple ID with your phone number
When you send and receive messages to and from other iPhone users who’ve also got iMessage activated, they’re sent and delivered over the internet as iMessages rather than as SMS
Non-Apple phones can’t receive iMessages so if you no longer use an iPhone, you need to deactivate it. This lets iPhones know to send you messages via SMS instead
If you’ve got access to your iPhone
Ensure your phone is connected to the internet (3G or Wi-Fi) so that the changes will sync with your Apple ID.
    Go into ‘Settings’.
    Tap ‘Messages’.
For ‘iMessage’, move the slider to ‘Off’.
If you don’t have access to your iPhone
    Go to supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do.
Log in with your Apple ID and password.
Select the product you need to de-register (your iPhone, for example).
    Click ‘Unregister’.
You’ll see the message ‘Are you sure you want to unregister and delete this product?’ – Click ‘Unregister’ again.

  • Switched startup disc and now can't start...

i tried to boot up from an old disc warrior cd, and couldn't. i switched the startup disk in sys pref, and now can't start the computer at all (i keep getting the message "you need to restart your computer...") now i know i need a new version of DW, but how do i start up from my hard drive??
    Thanks.

    Here's something that should work:
Restart the computer in single-user mode by pressing and holding down COMMAND-S immediately after the chime until the computer starts to a black screen with white print. At the prompt enter the following commands pressing return after each:
    prompt> /bin/df
(to get the /dev name of the drive)
    prompt> /usr/bin/hdiutil eject -force /dev/drivename
(where you got drivename from df)
If you are successful you can restart the computer by entering "reboot" at the prompt (without the quotes) and pressing return.
If you are not comfortable using the command line you can also eject the disk manually by inserting a straightened large paperclip into the small eject hole located on the side of the optical drive slot.

  • Transferred hard drive from Macbook to Mac mini and now have Disk Util prob

The problem is with Disk Utility. Basically, the DU window is just blank, that is, no hard drives show up in the left hand column. Also, none of the buttons at the top are clickable, though the menu bar drop down menus work. If I use Expose to push the window off the screen and then bring it back, then sometimes it shows the hard drive, but part of it's name will be cut off. Also, if the left hand side of the window is blank, but I right click somewhere there, it will behave as if I'm right clicking on the drive's name.
I also ran Disk Utility off the Leopard install disc and that's running fine. All the drives showed up fine and I repaired permissions and repaired the disks wherever possible. I also tried trashing the DU preference (plist) file, but that didn't help. I've restarted the computer multiple times and also tried from another account and still the same problems.
Like I mentioned, I'm not sure if this problem has anything to do with the mini or switching out the drive or if it was just coincidental with the drive exchange today. I can't remember the last time I tried using Disk Utility, but I'm sure it was some time ago.
The reason I was trying to open up DU was b/c my Time Machine backup drive is not being recognized by the mini as the backup (probably somehow it was tied to the Macbook), so I wanted to reformat it and start the Time Machine back ups all over again.
Anyway, I was wondering if you anybody had any suggestions. Maybe my Disk Utility program is somehow corrupted and I could reinstall just that program somehow? It almost seems kinda like a graphics issue since the window for DU kind of looks funny (things cut off, buttons disappear, etc.).
Update: I used Pacifist to extract the Disk Utility program from the Leopard Installer and it still has the same problem.

I see. Thanks for the info. Sounds like I may have already tried what you suggested, as I mentioned in my original post that, "I've restarted the computer multiple times and also tried from another account and still the same problems."
However, I haven't created a new account and tried opening DU when logged into that account. Do you think that may make a difference?
    Thanks.

  • Systemd and suspend to disk

    Hello,
I have the same problem as described in this bug:
[systemd] hibernation does not work: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/37028
    I followed the report to:
    Dave Reisner (falconindy) wrote:
Therefore: If you want the resume hook to work with the systemd hook, you need to go write code. You have a few options:
    1) Write a generalized solution for running the shell based hooks under systemd.
    2) Write an sd-resume hook which replicates the functionality of the resume hook.
    3) Write some other method of writing the resume device major:minor to /sys/power/resume which doesn't take place in early userspace. I'd bet that, for a lot of systems, you might even be able to get away with using tmpfiles.d for this.
Due to the lack of knowledge for 1) and 2), I went for 3):
    cat /etc/tmpfiles.d/resume.conf
    w /sys/power/resume - - - - 8:8
which also writes successfully the 8:8 in my /sys/power/resume .
    However, it does not work.
If I want to resume from my suspend to disk I get "root not clean, recovering journal" etc. and I'm at a fresh session.
    Any ideas?

I tried it and I can confirm that using tmpfiles.d doesn't work here either.
You're right that there's not so much to see in the previous boot. At the end of the log, when hibernating:
    Mar 08 21:51:03 amd64box systemd[1]: Starting Sleep.
    Mar 08 21:51:03 amd64box systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.
    Mar 08 21:51:03 amd64box systemd[1]: Starting Hibernate...
Mar 08 21:51:03 amd64box kernel: PM: Hibernation mode set to 'platform'
    Mar 08 21:51:03 amd64box systemd-sleep[3523]: Suspending system...
I can see harddisk activity and I believe that the image is written correctly to the disk.
I think the problem is when resuming. Before the systemd initrd starts I can see the lines:
Mar 08 21:51:48 localhost kernel: PM: Checking hibernation image partition /dev/sda2
Mar 08 21:51:48 localhost kernel: PM: Hibernation image not present or could not be loaded.
    Later in the boot:
Mar 08 21:52:00 amd64box swapon[205]: swapon: /dev/sda2: software suspend data detected. Rewriting the swap signature.
    Mar 08 21:52:00 amd64box kernel: Adding 2104508k swap on /dev/sda2. Priority:-1 extents:1 across:2104508k FS
    Mar 08 21:52:00 amd64box systemd[1]: Activated swap /dev/sda2.
    Mar 08 21:52:00 amd64box systemd[1]: Starting Swap.
    Mar 08 21:52:00 amd64box systemd[1]: Reached target Swap.
    [*1]
And a bit later when the tmpfiles service is executed:
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box systemd[1]: Starting Create Volatile Files and Directories...
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box systemd[1]: Starting Trigger Flushing of Journal to Persistent Storage...
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box kernel: PM: Starting manual resume from disk
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box kernel: PM: Hibernation image partition 8:2 present
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box kernel: PM: Looking for hibernation image.
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box kernel: PM: Image not found (code -22)
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box kernel: PM: Hibernation image not present or could not be loaded.
Mar 08 21:52:03 amd64box systemd[1]: Started Create Volatile Files and Directories.
Despite that it's not working I believe it's a bit late to resume when using the regular tmpfiles.d (rootfs got already checked and corruption detected, the above swap message about rewriting it's signature, which I'm not sure what it means etc.).
Therefor I tried to enforce the execution of the systemd-tmpfiles-setup service in the early systemd initrd (which it didn't do before), by a custom hook.
Unfortunately the result is very similar to above:
Mar 08 21:49:12 localhost systemd[1]: systemd 210 running in system mode. (+PAM -LIBWRAP -AUDIT -SELINUX -IMA -SYSVINIT +LIBCRYPTSETUP +GCRYPT +ACL +XZ -SECCOMP -APPARMOR)

Weird enough that the kernel: PM: messages appear above the "Starting Create Volatile Files and Directories..." which is the execution of systemd-tmpfiles-setup...
So currently I've reached a bit of a dead end on this. Maybe someone else can give an input...
[*1]: When looking at this I note that it's a bit contradictory. The kernel says it cannot find an image but swapon says it's there...
