Switcher needs help in buying

Folks,
I am planning to switch to a Mac this year for many common Windows reasons. I like the new intel iMac, but I have the following questions though:
1. Since this is going to be my first Mac, is it worth buying the iMac now or wait for few more models - iBook , Mac Mini or any other "Magic" Mac that Steve might pull out? I like the iMac for the power that it has on a consumer desktop, So I feel even if there are other Mac models that might come out for consumers, iMac will probably the best in terms of speed. What do you all say?
2. I've clearly read all the specs of the iMac and the one thing that i really liked is the extended desktop. I have a question though - Does this mean, I can connect my iMac to my TV and watch a DVD while I still rest my iMac on the coffee table and work on other apps ?
3. The DVD camcorders record video in MPEG2, will the iMovie be able to recognize it and edit the content ? or should I use only miniDV camcorders. This will help me decide which camcorder I can buy.I like the Panasonic 3CCD model, but Sony's DVD camcorder with Dolby digital audio recording is tempting.
Any other ideas, suggestions and comments will really help me in buying my new Mac. Thank you all!

Hi Dineshbabu
1. Since this is going to be my first Mac, is it
worth buying the iMac now or wait for few more models
- iBook , Mac Mini or any other "Magic" Mac that
Steve might pull out? I like the iMac for the power
that it has on a consumer desktop, So I feel even if
there are other Mac models that might come out for
consumers, iMac will probably the best in terms of
speed. What do you all say?
It's always going to get better, faster cheaper no matter when you buy
Rev B will be better than Rev A.
Buy when you want one... they're all gonna depreciate like crazy anyway - but you'll still have the same great machine you always had, won't you ?
2. I've clearly read all the specs of the iMac and
the one thing that i really liked is the extended
desktop. I have a question though - Does this mean, I
can connect my iMac to my TV and watch a DVD while I
still rest my iMac on the coffee table and work on
other apps ?
That's not really what it's for. The second monitor is a 'normal computer-type' monitor (although there are bits and pieces that'll get you there if you really want to).
3. The DVD camcorders record video in MPEG2, will the
iMovie be able to recognize it and edit the content ?
or should I use only miniDV camcorders. This will
help me decide which camcorder I can buy.I like the
Panasonic 3CCD model, but Sony's DVD camcorder with
Dolby digital audio recording is tempting.
3CCD DV is a vastly superior choice to anything that stores its Vid in MPEG2 or similar.
You can shoot and edit/build Broadcast-quality material from properly-shot DV.
MPEG2 is very much a delivery format only - i.e. it's what you convert footage too when you've finished the editing & production stages - not for the start. [They might look the same to you - the MPEG2 may even look Great to you -it's supposed to - but the differences are huge. Trust me™ ]
Any other ideas, suggestions and comments will really
help me in buying my new Mac. Thank you
all!
Yes, get ready to fall in love and be prepared to buy an extra Mac within a year or so grin
Best wishes - they're terriic, elegant systems.
Enjoy.

Hi...Im in needs of help in my new OS Mac World.Had my Logic Pro 9(9.0.2) install in my Snow Leopard(10.6.3).Need help on buying FIREWIRE/USB-compatible for Logic Pro 9.0.2 on my Snow Leopard.Just a real basic audio interface that works with my Macbook pro Specification. You're help will be much more appreciated..
    Best Regards:RatzyMazzy

In any case I would suggest to get an audio interface which is *Core Audio* compatible. This means that you just need to plug it in and it will work with OS X’s integrated driver. I once had an M-Audio interface which needed its own driver and it had latency problems because of them. I am currently using the EDIROL FA-66 with 10.6.3 on my MacBook Pro. It still works flawlessly and has worked without problems in the past with 10.4 and 10.5, too. Here is how it looks like: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=731
I have also heard good things about the FireWire interfaces from Presonus, like the FireBox.

  • Need help in buying a Laptop

Hi. I am looking to buy a laptop to replace my desktop.I will be using this laptop in my home only( room to room). For surfing the web,e mail, watching you tube videos,Facebook. And one last important thing, playing on facebook poker games.I think it"s called Zanga on facebook.I remember my old laptop before i bought my desktop,it use to freeze up sometimes while i was playing on Facebook-Zanga poker games.I will not be using my laptop for any other games but poker games. My question is do i need a special graphics card or can i buy any computer for these things .I am 60 yrs. old and don"t know a lot about computers even though i have been using them for years.I can not go more then $600.00.Please help me decide.Thank you for your time in reading this.

Sounds pretty average user requirements. As long as you don't plan on running any graphic intensive software or doing anything like mixing audio professionally you can probably grab whatever you want. Sorry I don't have any other advice for ya. Go see what the blue shirts say, that's what they're there for and they can get a better sense of your needs in the store and actually show you different products. It will also give you an idea of screen size, you'll find a keyboard that you can deal with, sound quality (for what it's worth at least).
$600 is a nice chunk of change to put into a computer now-a-days so I doubt you'll have trouble find anything.
I understand some people in your age range like to bring in family members, but I would urge against it since what happens your relative although they come with good intensions tend to look for stuff that they want, not you.
Example- you may want to end up looking into a tablet, like an iPad or Microsoft Surface tablet, with an attachable keyboard (look up a commercial on youtube if you need to see an example), but your son-in-law might tell you to get a 17 inch laptop that ends up needing plugged in all the time.. Have you ever sat at a Starbucks comfortably with a huge and heavy laptop and close to an outlet.... I haven't.

  • Need Help on  Buying Book for PSE 7

I bought Photoshop Elements 7 several months ago. I am not that savy with the program and was looking to buy a book to help me learn it. I've tried the on-line tutorials but didn't like them. I thought about  "PSE 7 Ultimate Guide for Dummies", but the reviews say that it is not really for beginners. The reviews state that you need a good understanding of PSE 7 frist. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good beginners book on PSE 7?
    Thanks.

    Hi
My second suggestion would be Scott Kelby's book......"Book for Digital Photographers"  I have an earlier version which i use besides the Missing Manual
I think you'll find that there isn't one book for all. It takes one or two, some practise and some free on line tutorials

  • Switcher needs help

I helped someone switch this weekend (she bought a new intel imac, nice), who was previously a windows user.
I transferred her songs over to the new mac, and also made a copy of the itunes library file, and the xml file and brought them over, in addition to 'previous itunes libraries' folder.
Now itunes sometimes will not launch properly for her. It shows as active in the dock, but won't bring up the itunes window, and you can't force quit it.
Here's my theory - that on the way through, I think bringing over her windows xml file and library file has caused issue with the imac. It can't be much else as she really has nothing else on the machine yet other than itunes and office.
Is there a way I can just trash these data files and have the imac 'rebuild' them in clean native mac format?

    This may possibly fix it:
How to re-create your iTunes Library
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313
Or you could try going to home > library > preferences, trashing the com.apple.itunes plist file, logging out/in, and launching iTunes.
    Good luck!

The Precision line is custom made for editing tasks
It is? (Don't think any of Tier 1 workstation systems are custom-made for editing, or they'd sport GeForce cards rather than Quadros, and offer an option not to install MS Office on them among other things. In fact, it they did, they'd made it easier to find their laptops that fit the above requirements, e.g. show me all the laptops supporting 32GB RAM, i7 CPUs, FHD resolutions. I tried... Which is one of the reasons ADK, Puget, Sager have an edge over Tier 1.)
I like M4700, especially that it's configurable with three internal drives, it's just harder to buy in a "ready-to-ship" configuration with the specs above. The OP wanted something that could be ordered and delivered quickly for under $2K, and this is where W530 came on top.
I speak from experience sir. So I can assure you my statement is valid. The Precision line caters to a group of professionals who tend to prefer the reliability and stability of Quadro. The M4700 is available at the aboue price.
Also, all Precisions can accommodate up to 32GB RAM and i7 CPU, as well as 10 bit Premiere Color monitor (on some models) and 3-4 internal drives.  In this case, the only "edge" from others, is a step down.

  • Need help on buying a new mac or saving an old one

currently i have a mbp 15 inch 2.2GHz. i have carpal tunnel syndrome and my doctor said that i should get a slide out keyboard like a desktop computer. i was weighing in on my options.
save my mbp and just get some apple display or another display and a keyboard.the 30 inch display that apple puts out looks amazing but its HD so i wouldnt get the HD cause my video card is only the GeForce 8600M GT. but if i buy the 30 inch from apple i would be $1795.46 with the apple care and student discount. so that almost like getting a new imac.
i was also looking in to the new imac. the 2.93MHz 24 inch with the 512mb invidia video card everything else stock then of course the apple care and my student discount that would be $2089.71 with tax.
what do you think i should get ?

I have been following this discourse with some interest, and although your question is answered, I would still like to add my 2¢ worth if I may.
It seems to me that you have already received your diagnosis and recommendation from your doctor, so I don't think that we are in the business of diagnosing and prescribing anything. That has already been done by your doctor. My impression is that you were simply seeking additional insight from a computer savvy community to supplement what you were told by your doctor.
I do not have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome myself, but my mother-in-law did. She used a slide out keyboard with a wrist rest and a Logitech stationary mouse with a ball top, also with a wrist rest. This was in Win 98 days, so she was using a standard keyboard.
There are ergonomic keyboards on the market now, and it may be that one of these would be helpful to you. It looks like these reposition your hands and typing position slightly, and are supposed to be designed to relieve/prevent Carpal Tunnel pain when typing. They may also serve as a training mechanism to teach you a better typing position, but I don't really know. There are also a number of wrist rests available.
You can see a few of these on display at an office supply like Staples, and try out the display models to see if they seem to make a difference or not. There are of course many models available, and if you think one might be helpful to you, you could do some on line research, and possibly even post back with a question specifically on ergonomic keyboards and which ones seem to work the best as well as which ones will be Mac compatible. People with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome who use these things day in and day out would be best qualified to make recommendations. And anyone who has experienced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome personally is certainly well qualified to give you a certain amount of insight and advice.
Properly setting up the geometry of your workplace is in no way a contradiction of anything you have been told by your doctor. I think there may well be some trial and error involved in achieving what works best for you personally. But I suspect that in the end you can achieve quite a bit to alleviate your pain.
One thing you might try for free is to roll up a towel or something to use as a wrist rest and see if it provides any relief. If so, you might find it worth exploring some of the ergonomic options available to you.
    Good luck, and Happy Computing!

    Hi, X, et al,
I too have been using these exact same Corsair DIMMs with no problems since April. The "however" part is that I would get 1600mhz CL 9 DIMMs instead at this juncture. They don't cost much more, and if you want to upgrade your existing 1333mhz RAM at some point you can, without throwing away all four DIMMs. Yes, you can mix 1600 and 1333 - they will be clocked at 1333. Just make sure to get CL 9 and not CL 11. For example:
    1600 mhz CL 9 $50 8GB
might work out for you. I do prefer buying from Amazon over Newegg though. Less return hassles.
Anything higher than 1600mhz is a waste - it's the fastest clock rate your chip set can handle.

  • Can't Console into ESW-520-24P Switch, Need help.

    Hi,
We have 3 ESW-520-24P series switches.
I can not console them because by default they have a security profile attached into it for "Console Only" and It is set as "Deny".
I can't modify or delete it because it's a default security policy.
We can do console into ESW-540-24P series switches without any problems.
Can someone share any solutions to gain console access for these switches?
Any one from Cisco TAC support?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mansur.

    Hi Devicarr,
    Thanks for your reply.
I can set the VLAN and Management IP address using the web interfaces.
But when I am trying to connect it via console it is not responding. I reset it to factory default and then found from the web control panel/interface that the switch has an "Access Authentication" under that it has a "Access Profile" and the profile has a default or built in profile attached says "Console Only" and it has a rule like "IP Source = 0.0.0.0/32 Permit = Deny".
I tried to delete or modify it even I tried to add a new rule to allow the console access but failed.
Does this switch series "ESW-520-24P" by default Console disabled when manufactured or ELSE? Please provide me your valuable suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mansur.

  • Video Virgin & Recent Switcher Needs Help

    PART ONE:
I had .wmv files on my PC and never did anything with them. Two weeks ago I get a Mac (som I can finally do stuff with videos and photos). The Apple Store tranfers all my PC files over to the new Mac. I click on my new Mac and look at the recently transferred .wmv files - but they aren't .wmv files anymore! They now end in .mpeg. When I click on a .mpeg file, I get a message telling me it can't be opened because it isn't a movie. Now what do I do?
    PART TWO:
Remember those .wmv files from Part One? Well, the Apple Store didn't transfer all of them - BUT - I still have the disks of those .wmv videos. I'll want to add those disks/videos to my Mac and edit those some day. Can I just load the disks and somehow download the .wmv files into a format I can use?
Thank you in advance for bearing with me. I'm so happy to be with the Mac OS now. No more Microsoft

They now end in .mpeg. When I click on a .mpeg file, I get a message telling me it can't be opened because it isn't a movie. Now what do I do?
An MPEG extension on a Mac normally refers to files containing MPEP-2 video muxed with one of the MPEG-1 layers of audio. QT does not "natively" support such files. You can, however, purchase and install the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) to make such files "Playback" compatible with the QT Payer. Even then, it will not support muxed AC3 audio content "natively." Even if you add the A52 AC3 component (free), it will not support multichannel AC3 audio. Alternate solutions would be to use VLC (free) for playback. iSquint (free) will convert such files to MPEG-4/AAC or H.264/AAC.
I'll want to add those disks/videos to my Mac and edit those some day. Can I just load the disks and somehow download the .wmv files into a format I can use?
If you want to play your WMV files in the QT Player or convert WMV files to QT compatible formats using the QT structure, then you can purchase the Flip4Mac component ($50) which will also allow you to convert to or from WMV. (Playback only component is free.) Most WMV will also play using VLC.
Visual Hub (pay-ware) will convert MPEG and WMV files to/from QT and, more specifically, to iMovie an editable compression format (DV). It would be cheaper than the Flip4Mac and MPEG-2 Playback components if you want to go that route,
