Switches to page thumbnails

Just this past week, while working on some Acrobat files in Acrobat XI Pro, I noticed the view kept switching to page thumbnails from my standard bookmark view.  I have no idea why that change took place, or how it might be resolved so that it does not happen further.  Can anyone shed some light on this?
Many thanks,
Ken Wagoner

It's probably not possible to change this default behavior.

  • Hiding the tool bar / showing page thumbnails by default

    Hi there
Does anyone know how can the right side tool bar be hidden by default on Acrobat DC?
Likewise, how can the page thumbnails show up everytime a PDF is opened?
    Many thanks

Following up on an earlier post...
I've tried a few alternative PDF products (which shall remain nameless). It is clear that Adobe creates really good, solid albeit sometimes annoying technology. In looking at reading capability, it is clear that Acrobat handles the more difficult situations effortlessly, and performance is quite good. Notwithstanding this, the majority of PDFs that I come across are quite mundane. An unsubstantiated guess is that most are created from basic MS Word documents.
The raison d'etre for the PDF was to maintain the sanctity of the print format when presented online. For the majority of documents (again unsubstantiated opinion), this is irrelevant. It is used the way it is because it is the easiest way to take a Word document and make it readable electronically.
If my guesses are correct, Adobe has really misread the main usage of Acrobat. Instead, the focus is continuing the development of Acrobat to keep it meaningful. Unfortunately, this direction is taking it away from its primary use case. Typically, product management is paid a lot of money to make bad judgements (being snarky) and this may be one of them. The product is better fulfilling uses cases other than just being a reader, the primary use case.
So, going back to looking at alternative products: what I've seen is that there are those that have some of the duality of Acrobat. What was done, however, was an acceptance of this duality: there was a way to switch the product between an Edit mode and a Reader mode. Something such as this might go a long way towards quieting people like us.
And, as a response to other comments in this thread...
One of the things that I do when designing a document for within Acrobat was signalling if I wanted the left pane to display. In many cases I did as this left pane would contain an outline of the information that is in my document. By manually creating a structure, I could facilitate my reader's access to the information. (I never found a use for thumbnails.)
It should, of course, be up to the reader if they want never to the left pane by default. However, as a document's designer, I want to have the ability to say how I want to be.

  • Switching facing pages off: impossible?

    Hello all!
In Pages 3.0, when switching to "facing pages", pages look facing in the thumbnails and in the main screen. But if you switch facing pages off, they will still remain facing in the main screen. It is a bit annoying as you cannot return to the usual view when you need it.
Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Artemiy.

On the lower left corner of the windo you will see a zoom percentage. If you click on that you should see a choice for one-up and two-up. Two-up is automatically selected when you choose facing pages, but I don't think it is automatically deselected when you stop using it.
I don't have a copy of Pages in front of me right now, but that is how the older version worked.

  • In Pages 5, why are page thumbnails different sizes?

So I'm using 5. And I must say I think it's brilliantly done after a long period of ******** about it. I guess I'm not asking of it anything it doesn't provide and what it does it does very well - though I'm puzzled by the behavior of selecting text via the keyboard.
Anyhow, that's not my question. I'm working with a long text document. I notice that as I work the page thumbnails become different sizes. It's subtle but it's clearly intentional. I reckon it's trying to tell me something but I don't know what. Haven't been able to find any info in the manual and was wondering if any of you clever people here might know. Thanks.

This is what I meant about how rude you are though.  Your answer DOESN'T EXPLAIN ANY OF THE BEHAVIOUR myself or the other person were reporting.  The only assumption that I can make is that you posted here for the sole purpose of implying that we are both mistaken or stupid.
How is this helpful at all?
How do you have 32,485 points when you are obviously more concerned with insulting people than helping them out?  It puts the lie to the whole idea of "Apple Support Communities."
Also, I specifically informed you that your comments were insulting and unhelpful and politely requested you not post on this thread anymore or at least until you had some kind of actual information, yet here you are.  Posting again, with no content other than the implied insult.
I'm not stupid.  I know what a section break is, I know what a page break is.  I'm a writer who has used innumerable word processing programs over the years and have been an IT worker for 10 years now.
I have a Pages document.  It has no (or only one depending on your point of view), section(s).  It has page breaks only.  The pagination is set to start at "1" on the first page and proceed normally to the end of the document (300 or so pages).  I am using Pages 5.5.2 on a brand new iMac.  I have NONE of the previous or older versions/types of Pages on my computer.
The pages thumbnails on the side, do actually CHANGE SIZE randomly as I am editing the document.   These differing sizes are NOT CORRELATED WITH THE BEGINNING OR ENDING OF SECTIONS.  These size changes are also NOT CORRELATED WITH THE PAGE BREAKS (in case you were about to argue the similarity of page breaks and section breaks).  As I work through the document and scroll up and down editing here or there, the size of the thumbnails RANDOMLY CHANGE SIZE.  Sometimes this is correlated with me working on a section, sometimes I can work on a section and no change happens at all.  The thumbnails that change size often change back again when I scroll back to them later on.
So please ... Try to act like a decent human being and either help out, or go away.  STOP POSTING THAT WE ARE WRONG, when you DON'T in fact know we are wrong.  STOP INSULTING ME by assuming I am stupid.
Why are you even here if you don't want to actually HELP anyone?
To anyone else reading this:  I am having a real bad time with this fellow who is just the most insulting person I have met for a while, however many of my posts about him are being deleted.  If anyone knows (including the mods of this forum) of the proper way to REPORT or get rid of a troll/abuser like him on Apple Support Communities or a place to report his behaviour, please let me know.

    Hey there,
Thanks for your reply. That works for the files I do what you said. However, for files I have not done that, It still shows the navigation bar. Any idea, how to do it default for any files?

  • Why can I no longer copy and paste a whole page in page thumbnail?

Why can I no longer copy and paste a whole page in page thumbnail?

Apple has removed over 95 features in Pages 5.
It has also introduced multiple file formats that are incompatible with each over as well as everything else, and numerous bugs.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

How do you suppress page numbers. I am trying to print a screenplay for the first time since switching to Pages and I can't suppress Page #1 without making the rest of the pages inaccurate, as page #1 is the Title Page. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Page Thumbnails not displaying in Pages Panel

    Hi all,
Hopefully a quick question...I've searched through the Forum and not spotted a similar issue.
I have a user who is experiencing an unusual issue in InDesign CS6 - Page Thumbnails aren't displaying in the Pages Panel (such that the panel is completely blank - no new page icon etc.), and Swatches aren't displaying in the Swatches Panel (default swatches or new swatches - the panel is completely blank).  I've checked all of the Panel Display options, and have toggled the thumbnail display size up/down, and on/off to no avail.  This problem is also non-document specific, it's happening on all documents either previously saved or freshly created.  I've also tried multiple workspaces and that hasn't helped.
I've also tried binning the preferences  and this hasn't helped...
Any thoughts where to start?  My hunch is possibly plugins not working/missing, but I'm not sure what/where to check.
Any help would be very much appreciated...
    Al

I hate to have to bump an old topic, but replacing my prefs doesn't work either. Tried restarting the computer too. Nothing really works and I hate to have to waste time reinstalling when I doubt that would help at this point. (hates windows).

  • Acrobat 9 Pro Watermarks showing on Page thumbnails

I am seeing an issue with Acrobat, that did not appear for us, prior to version 9.
We receive PDF files and add Security and Watermarks to them. The Watermarks are set to appear on all pages only when printed.
However, in Acrobat 9, the watermarks show on the Page thumbnails (which we do not want). They do not show on the actual pages when viewed on screen (which is correct) and the Watermark does appear when the page is printed (which is correct).
The original file is being supplied to us in an Acrobat 9 format. We are doing our work in Acrobat 9. We are not going backward in versions at any step. We have tried going to older versions of Acrobat to solve the problem, with no success. It appears that once the file is created or saved in Acrobat 9, this issue appears.
Why is the watermark appearing on the thumbnail in version 9, when pervious versions did not have this? Has anyone else encountered this, even with previous versions? Suggestions?

    Hi,
Played with the PDF at the link's end.
Both the page magnification value and the page display setting affect what is viewed by a Bookmark.
Whatever these variables had set when you created the Bookmark from the newly created named destination
(or from selected page content) will determine what is displayed by the Bookmark.
For a given page display, the page magnification becomes the significant variable.
With that said, using a Named Destination will call for additional editing.
(neglected to mention this before   )
    Access a Bookmark's Properties.
    Open the Actions tab.
Select the Action shown in the bottom 'window'.
I suspect you'll see a Page number where you expected a Named Destination.
Selecte Edit. Tick "Use Named Destination".
    Click "Browse".
Select appropriate named destination from the list.
    OK > OK > OK
    Be well...

  • Switching between page layout and word processing

I can't seem to switch between page layout and word processing view.  I've read all the posts on this and still can't figure out why I can't just type a document into Pages.  The only option I have in page layout view is to type into text boxes, which is not what I want.  I just want to type a letter for crying out loud.
Before I get all the rants about reading User Guides, etc.  *I have*.  I've also searched on here and in-app help and just don't understand the fuzzy/non-existant answers.  Obviously, I'm a newbie, so please don't jump all over me for this.  If it was Word - I could do this in NO time.  I just find it incredibly frustrating that inputting a normal document should be so difficult.
Is "Pages" *not* a word processing program?  Is it just a cut and paste application?  Sorry for the tone - I mean no disrespect - it's just that I've been fooling around with this for DAYS and I just don't have time to spare anymore.  I really need to get this done.
Can somebody give me a straightforward answer on how to just type a normal document into pages without using text boxes?
Thanks and I apologize for not being mac-savvy.  It took some of us a lot longer to see the light =)

Here is a script doing the conversion task for you.
    Open a Page Layout document
    run this script:
    --{code}
set p2t to (path to temporary items from user domain) as text
set path_2_doc to p2t & (do shell script "date +_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.doc")
    tell application "Pages"
      save document 1 in path_2_doc
      open file path_2_doc
    end tell
    --{code}
    that's all folks.

  • When using Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader xi, I cannot find how to keep the Page thumbnails from hiding. We want them open.  Please help!

In Internet Explorer, when opening a PDF using the IE addon Adobe Reader XI, the Page Thumbnail toolbar is shrunk to the left (hidden).  Our users access the thumbnails constantly and we need this to remain open by default but I cannot find anywhere that this option is set.  I would expect there to be a pin icon to click to keep it open.  In the stand alone product Adobe Reader, we found that you can click "Restore last view settings when reopening documents." in Documents prefs but this doesn't work for new documents (only previously opened docs) AND doesn't work in Internet Explorer at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Marc

That would be something you could set at document level in document properties but would require Acrobat to make permanent.

  • Truncated (incomplete) Page-Thumbnail View (6.03)

On my Windows XP 64 machine that is running two 1920x1200 monitors via NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600 with the latest drivers I am having the following problem: in both Acrobat and InDesign the page thumbnail views do not show all of the thumbnail whatever the settings or the proportions of the view. E.g., in InDesign the bottom portions of the thumbnails is not visible and the scroll bar not shown with Show Vertically on in Options and the slides on the right of the window are not shown with Show Vertically off.
This is most inconvenient as I am having to resize the window every time I want to find the missing slides.
Anyone else is seeing this and what might be the reason/remedy?
    Thanks

I don't see that the behavior you describe in the ID pages panel is related to a bug in how Acrobat displays page thumbnails. I seriously doubt that the two are using any code in common, and you describe truncated thumbnails, while the referenced thread describes thumbnails as completely omitted.
If your point was that there might be a bug in ID that is causing your problem, it doesn't seem likely as it hasn't been reported here previously that I can recall, and a problem with the display of the pages panel would have generated a LOT of comment by now. Try replacing your preferences or udating the video driver.

  • Fonts & Page Thumbnails Not Updating in PhotoBook

Is anyone else having issues with iPhoto '09 Photobooks, with page thumbnails going blank and font display in the main document not updating after the fonts are modified? I ported this book project over from iPhoto '08. Print to PDF looks fine but it's hard to work when you can't see your changes as you work. The only way I discovered to get the page thumbnails to come back was to make a modification on each page. Nothing I try, including quitting the app & restarting, seems to affect the font displayed in the document, but the PDF reflects the changes.
This is my 6th book - I thought I had the program down but now this... Are these issues possibly related to my PPC processor?

    Linda,
I am having the same issue. When I change the font or font size in Settings, the changes are not reflected on the screen. I have not explanation for this. I've restarted both the program and the computer all to no avail. I'm stumped. I may try saving to PDF to see if the changes actually have taken place but are simply not displaying. This is my 6th book too, but my first with iLife'09.
