Switching applications
Sometimes when I switch from an application that I have open to firefox, I cannot automatically type in firefox without first clicking the top of the firefox window, as if to select again, the application. suggestions?

It is probably a bit about understanding how the window and its tools have focus assigned to it. To ensure that Firefox is currently active, check that the Application menu has switched to Firefox in the upper left.
Secondly, the tab key lets you change the focus of the fields and tools on many application windows as well. If the upper left hand corner of a window is being floated over by the pointer from any application, it will then become active, thus changing the current focus. Make sure your cursor is over the Firefox window.

White Squares instead of Application Icons in Switch Applications
My "Switch Applications" (Command-Tab) has started sporadically showing a white square instead of one of the icons for the applications I have open. I can still click through to them, but it is a little disconcerting.
No particular application seems to be involved more than the others - Firefox, Finder, iTunes, and a Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client have all done this at one time or another today.
This may be related with the other problem that arose today: some application sub-windows sometimes appear simply as white window. (I mention this here because it may be relevant, but this problem has a separate thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13094719#13094719)
Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thank you.Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Can't switch applications out of Safari
I'm having problems switching applications out of Safari 4. I often cannot use ⌘-TAB to switch out of the application. Meaning that I either have to click the icon down in the dock or hide Safari and physically click on the application window. I'm just wondering if any other users are experiencing the same problem and if anyone has found a solution. Thanks.

Try deleting this file. com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
Preference files can occasionally get corrupted and replacing. Your Mac will create a new file for you.

Change tab behaviour when switching applications
Just wondering how to change how tabs seem to behave when I select another application.
If you have more tabs open than the screen has room for, when you switch application the active tab shifts to the far right.
Is there some way to stop this from happening ?
The other one which I think may be a bug is: If you have Firefox and another application taking up half the screen, and select the other application, when you reselect Firefox by clicking directly on a tab, a different tab is selected.This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

*If you have many extensions then first enable half of the extensions to test which half has the problem.

Mouse pointer hangs when switching applications
I have noticed that occasionally my mouse will hang (freeze, stall, get stuck, whatever you like) for about 0.5 seconds when I switch applications either by cmd-tab or by clicking with the mouse. I have not figured out a good way to replicate the problem but it happens pretty consistently on my computer (MBP2.2 with Leopard) and I was wondering if there was anyone else having similar issues. Thanks.
How many programs do you have open, what are they, and how much RAM is in your MacBook?
A pause during application switches often means that OS X needs to page data in or out of the virtual memory swap file on disk because it can't hold everything you're currently doing in the RAM that's available. -
IPhoto freezing when switching applications
Everytime I switch applications from iPhoto I can't get back to iPhoto. If I am in iPhoto and then use Safari, I can't get the iPhoto window back except with Expose. If I select the iPhoto window I am presented with a beachball. I have repaired permissions, rebuilt my library, etc. Any ideas?

I've got strange problem. After first succeeded use between phones (N95/N96) Switch applications stopped work on both devices. I can't even open them. N96 v.12 - N95 v.21
Has Anyone any idea what to do?

No, only the phone's internal memory (C: drive) is formatted when you perform a soft reset (*#7370#). A hard reset is to be used when the phone no longer responds to key input, and is performed by switching the phone on with the '*', '3' and 'call' buttons pressed.
Some software corruption can, however, be put down to corruption of the mass memory. I recommend you back up what you want to keep from the mass memory and you reformat it anyway.
Note that you have to use OVI suite to back up media activation keys. If you don't, then any DRM-protected media there was in the phone will no longer be playable after you've restored it.

I have a N96 on the 3 network V10 software and i'm trying to use the switch application to move my data across from my N95. For some reason when you select what info you want like contacts, notes etc then select ok, the software just seems to hang and there is no bluetooth connectivity. Can anyone advise as I have always used this software before when I upgrade my phones and don't know how to transfer my contacts etc etc anyother way. Thanks.

It's a similar kind of thing, but only OVI Suite is fully compatible with the N96. The Nseries PC Suite supplied with the N96 doesn't work at all, for example.

How do I edit the items on the "switch applications" list? Ones that are active are on the list, however when I close some applications, they remain on the list. Specifically I am looking to remove the "Blackberry Messanger" from the list. Thanks for your help.
You don't need to uninstall BBMessenger. It takes up very little space in the memory, and if you are not using it, it won't take up resources.

Can't Switch Applications - Force Quit Window Empty
I'm having a strange problem that has now occurred twice. I'll be running X-Chat-Aqua chatting on IRC and go hit CMD-Tab to change applications, but instead of switching all I get is a alert sound.
I can bring the windows of other applications forward using expose, but I can't interact with them. X-Chat's menus remain on the menu bar and any typing still goes into X-Chat's input text box.
Typing cmd-option-escape brought up the Force Quit window, but there was nothing in it. The power button does not bring up the Restart/Sleep/Cancel/Shut Down dialog box. Selecting Restart or Shutdown from the Apple menu doesn't do anything. I finally end up holding down the power button and force the Macbook Pro to shut down. After a reboot it seems normal again.
I have seen some other strange behavior of X-Chat since going to Snow Leopard, but could it actually cause this much trouble?

Joe.No, I'm not sure that X-Chat-Aqua is fully compatible. I've been trying Colloquy, but just don't like the interface. There's been no work done on X-Chat-Aqua in quite awhile. It is a universal binary, but I think the last release was done during Tiger, possibly Leopard.

Switching application shortcut problem (COMMAND+TAB) and (COMMAND+`)
Hello everyone
Since the upgrade Leopard i had a problem with the switching apps shortcut.
Once you start the switching apps forward shortcut (COMMAND + TAB), the switching apps Backward shortcut (COMMAND + `) won't work anymore. The only thing that make it works it to use (COMMAND + SHIFT + TAB) which is not good. It gives me cramp in my left hand! HA!
Anyways I check out petty much everywhere in the settings where I could find a customize shortcut for that. But I didn't find it. I also check if is was not an other application who was taking the same shortcut and it is not the case.
Can somebody help me on that one.
I know it is not a big deal but... still.

BenoitSome applications allow you to set hotkeys (Quicksilver, a 3rd party app, is the example I used -- this is not included with OSX). I was thinking that perhaps some other application you have was using the hotkey cmd-tab and stealing it from the finder.
You can also change the 'meta' keys in the system 'Keyboard and Mouse' prefereneces (click on keyboard -> modifier keys) -- this maybe is confusing things if its not set to defaults.
There's also a 'keyboard shortcuts' tab under keyboard and mouse, look under there e and see if there's anything involving tab (by default there shouldn't be). -
Switching applications when playing slideshow
Is it possible to switch to another application when you're in a keynore slideshow? Neither Cmd-tab nor Launchpad nor the Dock seem to be functional. I would really, really like to switch back and forth from applications to the keynote slideshow. Any help would be much appreciated.

Keynote takes complete control over the graphics system when in play mode. As you discovered, application switcher does not function as the card is 'locked' to Keynote. The only thing to do is press the exit key to reveal the other application. Not a good way of doing things when giving a professional presentation!
Hyperlinks would have been useful to launch another application, but they only action a web page or another Keynote file. -
Beachball when switching applications
Almost every time I'm working in Motion, and I switch to another application, then come back to Motion, I get the spinning beachball for about a minute. I've tried the QuickTime re-installation thing with no luck. Any idea of what might be causing this? I'm using Motion 3 with 3GB of RAM and plenty of hard drive space (it happens with Motion 2, as well).
Perhaps you have too many windows open. When you are browsing, a lot of desktop memory is used to switch between windows and links, and the toolbar memory. If you are done on the web,close the window. Also try the yellow button to minimise the window to the dock.Open the windows on your screen by using the dock icon. I'm new to Tiger, but have noticed that on my G3, it seems to take a moment to park the window, before opening the next when clicked to activate.Stickies got under my skin on OS 9, so I kept them turned off. Check your preferences. Perhaps they may be set to pop up periodically, or daily if you have worked past midnight.For the Finder window, If you have first opened the finder and left the window open, remember that the Mac Finder operates the desktop. Because of the 'hot zone' around your curser, you may be clicking on the hairline of desktop around the window, actvating the desktop, will give priority to the finder window, and the stickie window. If your Mac is new, call apple (during the workday ). Your Mac has a full year of Apple care included.

IPhoto 6 crashes everytime when switching application
iPhoto 6 crashes every single time when I switch to other applications like mail or iWeb via a command inside iPhoto 6 (emailing pics/ building web site, etc.) or via Finder (using application switcher or not). I did pretty much everything previously posted resolutions elsewhere regarding iPhoto 6 crash like rebuilding it, tossing .plist files, correcting permissions, Disk Warrior, etc. Here is iPhoto.crash.log. Any findings, suggestions would be appreciated.

How to enable Command-Tab to switch applications
I just upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard in my iMac, but for some reason Command-Tab is not working.
I already restarted the computer and checked the option (it was already checked) System Preferences / Mission Control and tick "When switching to an application ...", but still not working.
What can I do ?There is nothing to enable. The option you checked has nothing to do with the application switcher.
You could look through the keyboard shortcuts and see if anything has hijacked that shortcut.
Try starting up holding down the shift key. That will start up in safe mode and disable any third-party programs that might be affecting it. It also does a disk check, so it takes some time. See if it works in safe mode. If so, try restarting normally and see if it still works.
If it works in safe mode, then it is likely you have something that is interfering with it.
As another troubleshooting step is to log in as another user. If it works there, then you have something in your particular user setup that is causing the problem. If it doesn't work, then it is a system-wide problem.
