Switching back & forth between 2 computers

I recently bought a new MacBookPro because I needed a more powerful machine to handle my audio mixes in Logic 9.
My previous MacBookPro (from 2006) is still a good machine...I'd like to keep using it for Photos, I-tunes, etc., but there are some functions that I'd like to share between machines.
Is there a way to synch the 2 machines? I'm using external hard drives for my i-Tunes files & video files, can these by synched between both machines?
What is the best way to work with both machines, doing some applications on one and others on the other machine, but sharing the i-Tunes library?
If there are any links on the Apple website that address these issues, I'd appreciate anyone sharing them with me.

This is a complex question.
You can use MobileMe to sync data, bookmarks, etc. Depending upon the amount of stuff you're syncing, and the amount of space you're willing to purchase on MobileMe, you can do a lot.
The problem with moving the iTunes external drive between computers is that if one Mac makes changes to the library, the other Mac needs to redo the library to recognize those changes. This could be time consuming.
I think you should keep your iTunes with your main computer, but set it up for home sharing (iTunes Preferences>Sharing>Share my Library on my local network). Then your older Mac can play music.
I think this will do what you want.

Switching back&forth between Dialup and Cable Modem (Leopard)

Hey folks...I have a client who is using an iMac with Leopard (20inch titanium model from this year, 2gig coreDuo). She has cable modem, but cable service is very new to her area and thus never very reliable. For this reason, she's always had her Network preferences set up properly for both wireless and dialup. When her cable service drops out, she simply switches to dialup for a little while. The airport icon, top right of screen, can be clicked on to immediate access and choose between either of those configs. This always worked fine with Tiger, I set it up with her myself and it went swimmingly. Now that we've upgraded her to Leopard, her configs are still set up correctly, everything interfaces the same way, etc...however when she switches to the dialup method, it never connects. Nothing about the cable or dialup service has changed, and we only OSd in-place, so as i said configs and all relative information is exaclty the same. What do you think we need to correct or change? Thank you for any input!

Moving a user back and forth between different computers.

My wife and I both have a MBP. When we are travelling together we like to take only one computer and would like to be able to move one user to the one computer we take, so we can both log in to our own desktop etc.
When coming home we would than migrate the user back to the own computer.
I have tried several methods, for example the Migration Assistant but they do not seem to work and make a mess of it. Any tips how this can be achieved?

By user directory, I mean I copy everything from the BeyeB folder of her computer to the BeyeB folder on my computer.

BTW, while doing this, I'm logged into her account on my computer. No, I don't lose ownership of file and yes, all her prefs including desktop settings are kept.
Aha, I was doing it from my computer on my account.
so to be clear. connected over FW. you are on your computer in her user file, BeyeB. you get the files from user BeyeB on her computer to sync to your computer her user account BeyeB.
and that works? Files need replacing that might be in use? Do you need to log in and out after you sync to see changes?
Or do you mean the other way. you are on your computer and in user BeyeB and send the files to her computer user BeyeB?

Cannot go back & forth between macbook & iPad

cannot switch from using macbook to ipad (& vice versa) without getting an Earthlink message saying "the internet connection is currently in use by another computer ( 172.16.1.16 ). I then have to enter PW and hit 'release connection' to switch the internet connection to the device I want to use. This just began last week when I reset Time Capsule (back to factory settings after trying reboot) because it was not able to complete a back up. Contacted Earthlink says it's the router settings. Any suggestions?

Leave it off over night so before you go to bed shut off the main modem the ISP gives you.. change the TC back to router mode.. then turn it off.. in the morning.. start up the ISP modem.. wait a couple of min.. start up the TC.. if it fails to pick up the address, do a full factory reset.. it has to pick up the IP offered by the ISP.. and then NAT that to your clients.. otherwise get a better router.. TC are just poor in these setups. They need cable or adsl.. and have almost no controls for unusual environments.. then bridge the TC so it can be dumb hard disk.. what it does best.

When i press mail button to access email the tab goes back&forth between log in and connecting never stopping on one or the other

Impossible, there are zero, as in none, zip, nadda viruses for OS X. If you have viruses on it they are for MS Windows and will not affect OS X. I suspect the hard disk has crashed, if you have backup then it's not a big deal to have it changed, just take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for service. If you have not been backing it up you may be in for a painful lesson on why backup is critical.

I am developing a adobe interactive form (webdynpro ABAP) with 4 sections/blocks to represent each sub form. I have 4 sub forms, say my_sub_form_1..... my_sub_form_2.......... my_sub_form_3........ my_sub_form_4, say, here user is family_head
My requirement is; I need to put a BUTTON_1 (button caption is "GO_TO_my_sub_form_4" its for adding family members) on the my_sub_form_2 (it represents Family_head_details), when user clicks this button, then i the user (cursor) has to go to my_sub_form_4 so that user will enter some data there.
In the same way, I need to put a BUTTON_2 (button caption is "GO_BACK_TO_my_sub_form_2") on the my_sub_form_4(it represents Family_member_details), when user clicks this button, then i the user (cursor) has to go to my_sub_form_2 back.
So, say, there are 4 family members in the family, so, user will click the BUTTON_1..... 4 times and adds 4 people details each time, finally, submits the form.

1) How can i take the user/cursor from 2nd section to 4th section on clicking of the button_1?
2) How can i get back to the original section/sub form (section_2)?

What happened to the little icon that let you switch back & forth from mini player?

In earlier versions of iTunes you could easily switch with from full window to mini player by clicking a small icon on top right of large window. iTunes 12 makes you use a key board shortcut...any thoughts?

You open the MiniPlayer by clicking the artwork in the top central status area.
You close the MiniPlayer by clicking the small X at the top left.
The tool below that shows or hides artwork.

As long as they both meet the system requirements the general answer is yes.
However, you will only be able to sync music and videos from one of them. However, contacts and calendars can be synced with both, or only one your choice.
Purchased music can be transfered to the other computer using the iPhone even if you don't sync music with that computer. As long as both computers are authorized on your iTunes Store account, go to File -> Transfer purchases to copy purchased songs to the computer you aren't syncing with. The same steps can be used to sync songs purchased on your iPhone to the computer as well.

My question pretty much sums it up. I like to scroll with the page up/page down buttons, and it's hit or miss working with firefox lately. It will go between my previous pages that I've visited instead of scrolling down the page.
Any suggestions?

Syncing a project between two computers

I just got a new MacBook which I use when I travel every week. I have a project that I started at home on my 24" iMac. When I'm at home I would like to continue using the iMac because of the big screen. However I would still like to work on the project when I have time on the road.
So the question is "Is is possible to copy / sync a whole project with clips between two computers and be able to go back and forth between the computers?" I realize I might have to copy the whole file.
Better yet is there a way to keep the project on an external drive and use iMovie on each computer to open up and work on the project.

Yes this is possible.
First, make sure your external drive is formatted as MacOS (journalled) or HFS+ (journalled)
Go into iMovie and from the Project list, drag your project to the External Drive by dragging the project name to the icon for the external drive in the project list in iMovie.
Now select File/Consolidate Media and choose Move (not copy). Everything will be consolidated to the external drive where the project is. You can open it on another Mac.

[QEMU/KVM] Use KVM switch to switch mouse/kayboard between host and VM

I finally have my QEMU/KVM setup running and working as I want it, except for one thing. I have a KVM switch (a piece of hardware not the hypervisor ) to switch audio and video. It also offers the feature to switch mouse/keyboard between to Computers. Here is the relevant excerpt from my lsusb:

The device named "Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver" is the dongle for my mouse and keyboard. The first problem is that both devices (in both states of the switch they both appear) have the same device id 046d:c52b. This can be solved by telling qemu to identify the device by #bus.#device instead of the id. The problem is that after each switching the device number increases. This makes sense as for the system the switching process is as if the device was unplugged and plugged in in a different usb port. Therefore the device would probably be disconnected from the VM when it was assigned on the VM's startup (is there a way to add usb devices on the fly to a vm without typing an add_usb command in the qemu shell). Do you have any ideas what I could do?
EDIT: Just found about QMP. Would it be possible to save an initial condition (mouse/keyboard is on host) and fetch new devices busses after switching (udev?) and switch the saved sate? If the state is now "m/k should be on the vm" one could send qemu an adequate add command.
EDIT2: I found out that my mainboard's usb is organized using 3 usb controllers (2x2.0, 1x3.0 each with 4 ports). I want to pass one of those PCI controllers to the VM but all I get is a black screen.
EDIT3: I tried the other usb controller and it worked. Well, kind of. I moved the mouse in a circle and made a right click. Than I was not able to use the mouse or the keyboard anymore. Should I consider buying a PCI USB2.0 controller as that might be easier to forward?

This article has someinteresting information in the comments. You don't have to use a kvm switch neccessarily. I for one prefer a software solution.
Okay, so to make things clear: I do not switch keyboard/mouse. I keep them shared between both OS, using Synergy. The host OS runs a web server, and the guest OS runs a client – they exchange mouse position information, so that at any time only one of them receives ‘clicks’. This is great for both multi- and single-monitor setups.
Another story is that I have two video outputs connected to a single monitor, and I would like to switch between them without using the buttons on the monitor itself. For this, I use the I2C that is embedded within HDMI or DP.
Almost all monitors support DDC, but there are scarce apps that can make us of it. There is DDCcontrol for linux, but it is completely outdated, and failed to work with my particular monitor. So I ended up getting to know the VESA DDC standard, reading the source of that tool and several similar ones, and created a simple C program (source) that works in case of my setup. Most likely it will not work elsewhere, but it should give you a nice starting point for communicating with the monitor. The fragile spots are line 41 – you may need to change the i2c bus number the the one correct for your system, and you may need to prepare other data to send to the monitor (68 and 71) if you want to switch between other outputs than I do. Refer to the standard in order to prepare them.
As for how to change his source code to help you, I am not of much help right now as I do not know the DDC protocol. Hope that helps.

HP PhotoSmart 6525 Switching Back-and-Forth between Wireless and USB

Hi,
I setup my HP PhotoSmart 6525 using the "Wireless with a router" setup instructions (i.e. not Wireless Direct). I am able to print from my laptop through the wireless network. I would also like to be able to print from my laptop using the USB connection at times when my laptop is physically sitting next to the printer. At times when it is not, I want to continue to be able to print wirelessly.
Is it possible to setup the print drivers on the laptop so that I can easily switch back-and-forth between USB printing and wireless network printing? I suspect that it may not be possible because the user guide has a section describing how to "Change from a USB connection to a wireless network" that has you click on a menu item called "Convert a USB connected printer to wireless". There are no instructions for how to convert back to USB. Moreover, the use of the word "convert" does not make it sound like you can maintain both print methods simultaneously on a single computer.
Does anyone know whether it can be done, and if so how?

I see you have the HP Photosmart 6525 installed for Wireless printing capacity and would also like to add a USB driver so that it is available for use when near the printer. Please follow the steps below to add a copy of the printer for USB printing. The below steps are for Windows 7 and below based computers. If you have Windows 8, then the steps will be slightly different so let me know. Please let me know if you have a Mac, because I can provide those steps at that time.
Press the Start menu of the computer
Select All Programs
Open the HP Folder
Open the folder for the HP Photosmart 6520 series
Select "Printer Setup and Software"
Select the option to Add a new printer
Select the USB option
Plug the USB cable in when the software requests it and proceed through the install process
This will leave the Wireless driver support in place and add a second printer under the Devices and Printers window for USB printing. The USB printer may contain Copy 1 in the name as a differentiation, however the other one should also state Network in the printer name to indicate it is the wireless option.

How do I switch back and forth between Roku and Verizon FIOS TV?

I just purchased a Roku 3500R Streaming Stick (HDMI). I set it up with no problem. What I can't figure out is how to switch easily between viewing the Roku and viewing regular TV. The only way I was able to get rid of the Roku screen was to unplug the Roku from the one HDMI connection on my TV, and replace it with the HDMI connection from my set-top box. If I got an HDMI splitter, would there be a way to switch back and forth without unplugging things?
FYI, my TV is a Sony Model KDL-32S2010. Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted!

Looks like your TV only has 1 HDMI port.
A splitter won't work. Would need to get an HDMI switch.
Or just get component cables (will need 4) to run from FIOS box to Component ports (3 video and 2 audio) on the back of your TV.
Then just use the TV menu to switch back and forth.

Switching back and forth between 2 JFrames, rendering the other non-visable

This seems to be my last problem with this assignment thankfully, everything else is completed. As per topic description, My assignment is to create a calculator like the windows XP calculator. It must have a 'standard view' on start up and the option to switch to a scientific calculator and switch back and forth as needed.
As you most likely are aware the scientific calculator is approximately 1.3x the size of the standard calculator. I did look into CardLayout and TabLayout but from what I can gather these can't change sizes. Being this is my first experience with swing, I naturally followed my books design which was to extend JFrame and implement other classes. I feel this may be the wrong course of action now.

}Ok that is a very basic overview of what the class looks like, the Standard calc hides itself and goes into Scientific mode very well, however when trying to switch back to Standard nothing happens, as you can see from that Action method I have tried numerous things, including dispose(). I need the standard view to become the scientific view and change it's size. I have read a lot of the swing tutorials and I can not think how to do this. Keep in mind that when Standard calc switches to scientific it does not open a new window, the window simply morphs. (this happens at the same orientation to desktop as well).
2 questions:
1. Does anyone know how I can switch back to standard calc?
2. Should I redesign my project (which is currently sitting at 1200 lines and a single class(with inner classes)) and how?
What is a good way to design a swing application such as this? (or is having the class extend JFrame perfectly normal?)

Additionally, I forgot to mention, I use the menu bar already defined in standard calculator(outer class) inside my scientific(inner class), all the options within scientific mode work exactly as they do in standard. Except of course for switching back to standard. Also the boolean variable isStandard, is not the problem as I have tested without it. the "About Calculator" "Help Topics" "copy" "paste" menu buttons all work and perform the actions as implemented in the Standard Calculator actionPerformed(ActionEvent e), The scientific actionPerformed() method IS BLANK!!!
I was somewhat surprised at this, yet thankful as well. I didn't want to have so much repeat code in the inner class.

I shouldn't have been so quick to think I won't run into any more problems...
