Switching between program windows.

I can't switch from one program window to another with cmd+<. For example when I have two safari windows it's not possible to switch between the two with these keys. I use this a lot. How can I fix it?

Hi..
Check in system preferences under keyboard / keyboard shortcuts /keyboard & text input.
On my mac its ctrl + F4 (^F4).

  • How can I switch between multiple windows of the same application (e.g. Safari) over several desktops ?

    Hi All,
I have one application, for example safari, open and running with multiple windows (with or without tabs) spread over several desktops.
How can I switch between the windows only via keyboard? CMD+> and CMD+< let me only swicht between windows open on the one desktop I am currently looking at.
    thanks for your replies,
    equi

    Barney,
many thanks for your efforts and your time (preparing and posting the screenshot, answering to this question,...).
Unfortunately, moving the focus to the next window only works with windows on the same desktop.
btw, using a german keyboard layout and german language settings the shortcut is "cmd+<".
I can switch with this shortcut between different windows of my Safari which reside on the same desktop, but I cannot swith between different safari windows distributed over several desktops.
    Thanks,

  • Dock not working; command-tab switch between programs not working

The Dock does not work. I have restarted (although the computer will not restart under "Restart", getting stuck at the last part, and needs to be restarted manually). When I change Dock preferences it reverts back to default settings. If I am lucky, the dock will appear and then disappear (poof) without having functioned.
The command tab function for switching between programs stopped working also.
The individual programs work, but I have to go to recent items to switch programs.
Further, I have two Previews open (with different documents in each) even though I have only one Preview program.
A whole lot of bizarre things that may be connected? I would appreciate any help.

You could try removing the .plist file again, but this time, try also removing the com.apple.dock.db file. Then log out and log in again.
Also, it seems as if many people are having similar problems. See [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9126119].
So, does the problem persist with another user account?
If it were my machine, the next thing I'd try is downloading the combo updater from Apple's website and reinstalling it. 10.5.6 is available [here|http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10-5-6_ComboUpdate].

  • Full screen mode: How to switch between open windows?

    Hi There,
Is there way to get CMD + ` working in full screen mode?
Other shortcuts like CMD + OPT [ ] to switch between open tabs and CMD + TAB to switch apps seem to work - but without the ability to switch between open windows within the same app, full screen mode is kind of useless.
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
BTW I'm using Yosemite but the forums won't find a Yosemite community (not sure the community search is working properly)
    Cheers

  • How to switch between 2 windows of the same application using Cmd+Tab

    Hi,
I am using my mac now since about 10 months. I was used to work with Linux and Windows XP.
Something I am badly missing on mac os x is the possibility to switch between 2 windows of the same application using cmd + tab just like it simply works for Linux and Windows (and maybe many other OS out there!).
Very often I have 2 text files open in 2 editor windows (e.g. TextEdit) and need to copy and paste text from one window to the other. I was used to simply use ALT+TAB. But here I have to get my right hand away from the keyboard and use the mouse to change the focus from one window to the other and then use the mouse again to get the focus back to the previous TextEdit windows.
THIS REALLY *****!!!! It makes me crazy. I cannot believe that such a "modern" OP does not support this action. I must be doing something completely wrong or did not understand the mac correctly. Right?
Does anyone have an idea how I can get mac to do something all other operating systems so easily do?
    Thanks
    Quartz84

    Hi Kappy,
well what you are saying is obvious to me. This is not the point for me and not what I wanted to know. But I think you answered my question anyway: OS X is unable to switch between windows of the same application as I mentioned in my example.
    WHY NOT???
Every other OS is able to differentiate between windows and not just applications.
Another example: The Mail application and an Email editor window. When you are writing an Email and you want to switch to the main window of the Mail application to read something you must again use the mouse!
I mean Apple seems to be "somehow" using FreeBSD in the background and even in FreeBSD's window manager it is possible to switch between windows of the same application.
Well, in the Apple world it is always the pour user who is not intelligent enough to understand Apple's philosophy ;-(
To me this is not modern, it is simply a weakness of the OS.
    Cheers

  • Switching between programs

I have one little problem. I know very well how to use mac OS X in most situations but I just can't find out how to switch between programs when an override is active like battlefield 1942. I just want to look if I god messages in Adium or I like to switch music in iTunes. Command-Tab does not work here. I tried many man things but didn't find it.
    Thanks for help.
    Bastian

I'm not really a "Game" person, and have none loaded on my Mac.
But I would think that if your Dock preferences are set to "Automatically hide and show the dock" you should just be able to move your pointer down to the dock position and switch to your programs that way.
Also, have you tried hitting the Command+Tab keys at the same time and switching between programs that way? (you press the Command Key and while keeping that held down you press the Tab key then by repeatively tapping the Tab key you move across the icons of open programs to get to the one you want)

  • Illustrator CC automatically switches between open windows

We have a couple of issues with Illustrator CC on a number of workstations, has anyone else experienced the same?
    1. It randomly switches between open windows; if I am working in one window it will switch to another open window even if that window is put in the dock.
    2. Constantly crashes.

I refuse to go to CC unless dragged to this software subscription model kicking and screaming. But wait if your not happy with the CC software you might consider canceling your subscription. Or it could be a feature that Adobe has implemented that switches to the window you should be working in, not too unlike switching to a software subscription model. Sorry, sometimes I'm not as helpful as I should be. You might consider running the cleaner uninstall and reinstalling the application first.

  • Switch between fullscreen windows of same app

I have Safari open and have multiple windows that are opened as fullscreen.  I want to be able to switch between the fullscreen windows of Safari with a keyboard keystroke.  When not in fullscreen I can use Cmd-` to switch between windows of the same app but I am unable to do this in fullscreen mode and perfer to use the keyboard as much as possible.  Any help would be great.

So far I've found that I can use ctrl-left and ctrl-right to switch back and forth between widgets, desktop, and fullscreens but I would rather use cmd-tab to switch to the app and then switch between windows in that app.

  • Switching between external windows???

    hi,
is there any method by which we can switch between the external windows????
let me just explain the scenario.
in my application i need to make changes in admin window(say window-1). this will change some changes in the secondary- child window (say window-2). while automating, i have to make some changes in the window-1, switch my current window to window-2, then run some testcases.
    Please Help!!!

cant you split it up into two different scripts?
script1 - does tha admin stuff...
script 2 - doest the other stuff
then you can either put these scripts together in an eTester Group (in eManager Enterprise) or as a job in eTester...

Specifically, what keyboard shortcut (if any) will switch between windows on OS X Mavericks? Does it also work if the other window is currently minimized? I'm running Firefox 32.

On Mac you should be able to cycle through open Firefox windows via (Shift) Cmd + ~ (Tilde) or possibly accent (`)

Safe Mode deletes some system caches that may help..
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu then try switching between applications.
