Switching between the two video processors

I recieved my MBP 17" yesterday and am overall quite impressed. The battery is holding up quite nicely, although I think you have to have so much turned off and the screen brightness turned low to get 7 or 8 hours of battery life it might be pushing the reality a bit.
I do have a question though. I can not see a way to choose between the two video processors. The only one area is the performance level in the battery section, but really do not see a clear way to choose. Any suggestions?

Hi Captain_Steve
In order to switch to the two video processors you will need to change the setting in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. and after that you must log off and log on again.
If you do not log off and log on again, the change in the graphics processors will not be done

Andrew

So I couldn't activate Assassin's Creed 3 on bootcamp which I shuold have been able todo. I posted it on Ubistoft Support and This is what I got!
    Hello ,
It looks like your DXDiag report is showing only an integrated graphics card. Being an Apple computer with an i7, it should have a dedicated video card as well. You may need to contact Apple support so they can help you either disable the integrated graphics card or update any software they use that will aid the computer in switching between the two graphics chips.
So I was wondering how I could disable the intergrated grahics card or update any software that will aid the ocmputer in switching between the two graphic chips.

The Early 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro has only got one graphic card, and this is the integrated card, Intel HD Graphics 3000.
Some games don't support this type of GPUs, and it looks like Assassin's Creed is one of them, so unfortunately, you can't run the game in this MacBook

  • Picture-in-Picture: Switching Between the Two?

    Hey gang -
First a bit of background: my video editing is purely as a hobbyist and focused primarily on my race track activities.  I do a lot of in-car video when I'm at the track.  Each video is about 20 minutes long or so, depending on how long the track session goes.
I'm considering buying a second camera and pointing it backwards to get the rear-view-mirror sort of effect.  Part of the idea is for amusement to watch how quickly the cars I pass shrink back behind me... :-)  So the idea was to make a PiP video with the rear-facing camera view perhaps 45% its normal size and in the lower right hand side of the main video.  I watched the online tutorials on that and it seems fairly easy to do (if not computationally expensive).  I even played around with it using two of my older track videos just to see how it works.  Easy stuff.
OK, the question: is there any way to easily switch views?  In other words make the rear-view camera the primary and the front camera the PiP?  Is there a way to do that without cutting the two video streams and swapping them between V1 and V2 in the timeline?  Again, I'll have 2 20-minute video streams (and a separate audio stream).  Is there a way to do that transition while leaving the two streams intact?  Or do I have to cut?
Sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology here.  Still new to this stuff. :-)
    Thanks!
    jas

Well, in general, it's actually more of disk thing, because you're playing multiple video streams simultaneously. Functionally, it's equivalent to creating a PIP with two or more video tracks visible. Of course, depending on the nature of the footage, e.g. AVCHD, it can become a very CPU-intensive process, as well.
I'm not sure if hardware MPE/CUDA really has much influence on multicamera editing or not, to be perfectly honest. Theoretically, since a CUDA GPU handles things like scaling--and that's more-or-less what you're doing in the multicamera monitor--its conceivable that hardware MPE works there. It really all depends on whether that part of the application was written to take advantage of CUDA or not. One of the Adobe engineers who seems to work most closely on GPU acceleration sometimes pops into threads like this to clarify such questions--I don't know if anything definitive has ever been stated before.

  • Is there a huge difference between the two different processors on the 13"

I'm trying to work out if is worth spending the extra $190 (AUS) on the 2.53 processor or if there really isn't much difference between it & the 2.26 processor?
My exceptional use might be using imovie & flicking between that & iphoto & itunes and possibly having firefox & mail & MS word running at the same time. But that would be exceptional use.
Normal use might be mail, firefox, iphoto or Adobe photoshop elements (System 9) and word running all at once.

It is a fair old jump from an eMac to a current MBP, sd and you will certainly appreciate the speed and RAM boost (though , of course, the decrease in RAM prices has meant that programmers are less circumspect about wasting the stuff than they were in the days when you eMac was made!)
Apple's prices on RAM and HD upgrades are much more realistic than they used to be, although you can still save a little if you buy the base configuration, upgrade yourself, and then sell the old drive and RAM. Both are regarded as "user upgradable" on the MBP. On the other hand, getting the official upgrade saves a lot of hassle, and prevents any possibility of warranty issues if you stuff something up in the process!
My own MBP13 is the "base model", with RAM increased to 4Gig. With 4 Gig on board it is a little faster than my older 20007 15" "santaRosa" MBP for most things. With 2 gig on board it was a little slower in the sort of areas you are interested in. It definitely needs the 4 Gig, I reckon. (Both are much, much, faster than my iMac G5).
Yes, your strategy makes pretty good sense to me. The processor speed difference is about 10% at best. In any situation where HD access etc is involved it is likely to be less. Compared to the eMac you are looking at increases of several hundred percent on most tasks. With more RAM, a bigger HD, and a current copy of Elements you'll still be a few dollars in front.
    Cheers

  • Switching between the two GPU's

So does the computer switch automatically between integrated and discreate when it needs to or do you have to judge when you need more graphic processing power and manually switch it? Also, if you have to switch it yourself, is is complicated or do you just click a button somewhere?

The computer does not judge when to switch GPU's without you explicitly telling it to.
By default, the Macbooks are set for better battery performance and are set to use the integrated Nvidia 9400M.
To switch between cards, go to:
    System Preferences > Energy Saver
The first option listed will be "Graphics" giving you the option of "Better battery life" or "Higher performance."
Toggle the "Higher performance" button and your mac will prompt you to log out. This process takes 5-7 seconds where the screen refreshes the desktop and switches to the 9600.

When I'm not minimized to copy data from one open browser to the other, I have them maximized. I'll be on one and randomly firefox will switch to the other. Very frustrating. Thanx

Are that windows in the same Firefox instance or do you have multiple Firefox instances open with separate profiles by using the -no-remote command line switch?

  • I am using Mail for emails and I seem to have two different windows that switch between the two.  The emails are the same but the second window opens when I click on any details and I cannot see the top of my screen with control icons for internet, file

I am not very tech savy and apologize in advance if my question is not clear.  I use the Mail application on my mac and I have two users on my computer, one for gmail and another for my work email.  All email addresses appear in the mail application on one page.  When I open my email and click on a message it often goes to the other user screen and cuts off the top of my screen which shows the bar for Chrome, file, edit, view, history etc....Still functional but very annoying.  How do I choose a user screen and stop having it switch back and forth.
    Thank you.

  • Switching between the Classic View and the Tree View in transaction FEBA

    Hi All
I would like to know how to switch between the Classic View and the Tree View on transaction FEBA for post processing of bank statements. I have a scenario where in the DEV client the transaction is calling up the Tree View and in my QA environment it calls up the Classic View, and I would like to know if there is a way to easily switch between the two views.
    I'd appreciate your assistance.

    Hi,
I think you can do the same using transaction codes FEBA and FEBAN.
    Thanks

  • Nexus 6004 EIGRP Relationship between the two switches

    Hi All,
I will try to explain this as best as I can. In our current TEST LAB we have a Pair of Cisco ASA5585x running in Active/Passive mode. We use a VRF transit to connect the 10 GB interface to a Pair of Cisco Nexus 6004 (L3) switches running vPC between them. Downstream we also have a pair of Cisco 9372 switches (L2) also running vPC between the two.
As of right now we have EIGRP neighbor relationship formed between the two N6K's and the ASA.

Both Nexus Switches formed EIGRP neighbors using the vPC Peer-Link. There is enough documentation out there that strongly suggest not to use vPC Peer-Links for EIGRP anything.
We do have additional interfaces available on the 6K's that we can use as a cross connect for EIGRP. What we are having trouble understanding how we can force EIGRP traffic over those ports?

    Jon,
Are you ready for the mass confusion?
when Looking at the ASA EIGRP neighbors output here is what I see.
    ASA# sh eigrp neighbors
    EIGRP-IPv4 neighbors for process 100
H   Address                 Interface       Hold Uptime   SRTT   RTO  Q  Seq
                                                (sec)         (ms)       Cnt Num

    0   172.16.230.9            Te0/8.451        13  16:45:20 1    200   0   148
For simplicity sake lets just concetrate on Interface TenGigabit0/8.451 which is the SVI on the Nexus switch that is VLAN451
From the Nexus Switch 6004 that is directly connected to the ASA here is what I see
SWI01# sh ip eigrp neighbors vrf Inside
IP-EIGRP neighbors for process 100 VRF Inside

The Inside VRF that is tied to both SVI's on the Switch vlans 451 and 680 is in EIGRP 100 on the switch
SWI01# sh run int vlan 451

        authentication text test
        preempt
        priority 250
        ip 172.16.8.1
so you with me so far?
If you are you have noticed that on the ASA neighbors the ASA sees 172.16.230.11 as a neighbor which is the Secondary Nexus SW. That is becauise they all share the same subnet.
    172.16.230.8/29
    Brakedown:
    PRI Nexus 6004 - 172.16.230.9
    SEC NEXUS 6004 - 172.16.230.10
    PRI ASA 5585x  - 172.16.230.11
    SEC ASA 5585x  - 172.16.230.12
Because the ASA EIGRP network is a /29 it learns the Secondary Nexus via the Primary Nexus.
I am not sure that the link we created between the two Nexus Switches is doing anything but consuming ports right now.
SWI01# sh run int ethernet 8/9
    interface Ethernet8/9
description EIGRP PORT to Secondary Nexus
      switchport mode trunk
      switchport trunk allowed vlan 450-451
SWI02# sh run int ethernet 8/9
    interface Ethernet8/9
description EIGRP PORT to Primary Nexus
      switchport mode trunk
      switchport trunk allowed vlan 450-451
So the SVI's that go up to the ASA for inspection are 450 and 451. The network SVI's are 600 and 680 all of them live on the switch, and 680, and 600 are extended over the peer links down to the 9372's.
I think that we are breaking the golden rule of vPC BUT.. I am not 100% sure. Some of the documents read that we should not be allowing network vlans over peer links, but then how do you extend the vlans down to the leaf switch?
This is giving me nightmares at the moment…
    does this make sense?

  • Master is always switching between the same two members.

    Hi all,
We have observed that our replicated environment, is always switching between the same two members even though there are other members with more cpu power.
As said on message {message:id=4169549}: "+In the event of a tie, an arbitrary, but predictable attribute is used to break the tie. In the current release, that tie breaker is an implementation artifact, and is not available through the public API.+"
I know the availability of "je.rep.node.priority" property but, is it possible to set a custom tie breaker or add some king of randomness to the default tie breaker?

    /César.

    Cesar,
No, currently there is no way for the application to influence the election, except through the use of je.rep.node.priority. However, is it possible to use node priority to achieve your goals? If use a positive priority value for all nodes (and avoid using zero), elections would make this choice:
    - first consider nodes with most recent log files as master candidates
    - node priority used as a tie for those most-recent nodes.
Since node priority is mutable, you could even change the node priority randomly on each node, which is rather awkward, but would work.
Out of curiosity, could you tell us your motivation for injecting some randomness into the master selection? We understand that some nodes have more resources and should be higher priority, but have not thought about why randomness would be useful.

hi I'm travelling between two countries and i have a credit card and address in both, can i set up my itunes account to switch between the respectice i tunes stores

Not a single account, no, at least not easily. It would be better to set up individual iTunes Store accounts, one in each country. Your computer and devices can quite happily deal with two accounts, and then you can just log into the appropriate account when you're in the applicable country. You'll need a second email address to able to create a new Apple ID.
    Regards.

    Hi...
    Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
    Control-F4
Move focus to the active (or next) window
    Shift-Control-F4
Move focus to the previously active window
By the way...  since you are new to Mac, click a clear space on your Desktop. You should see "Finder" top left corner of the screen in the menu bar.
Click Help then click Help Center
As an example type in    keyboard shortcuts
You can use the Help menu for almost any application on your Mac.

  • Can I backup two devices (with different documents) to one iCloud account?  For example: iPad and iPhone, not everything is synced between the two, but I would like to backup each (seperately in the cloud), is this possible?

    Hello Apple Community,
Can I backup two devices (with different documents) to one iCloud account?
For example: iPad Air and iPhone 5, not everything is synced between the two, but I would like to backup each (seperately in the cloud).  Is this possible?
This way when I change from an old ipad to a new, I can restore with the ipad backup, and when I change from an old iphone to a new, I can restore from the
    iphone backup.
    Thank you in advance!

Terminology check here. Do you really mean a "CD"?  There's a difference in Cloud behavior between content from a physical CD you ripped (which only has Cloud content if you have iTunes Match) and an "album" you bought from the iTunes Store.
    Read references for Home Sharing.
iTunes: How to share music and video - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2688 - about Music Sharing and Home Sharing
Home Sharing Support page - http://www.apple.com/support/homesharing/
iOS: Setting up Home Sharing on your device - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4557 - "With Home Sharing in iOS 4.3 or later, you can stream your entire iTunes library over your home Wi-Fi network from your Mac or PC right to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch."
The above can get pretty complicated.  You are probably best off by syncing both devices to a single library and/or updating the libraries on both computers to have the same content.
