Switching boot drive to new internal drive??

I just got a new 150 gb internal drive installed and I've been trying to install the restore software to use it for the new boot drive instead of my old 80 gb. Disk Utility will recognize it but the install software process just shows the old drive. I've tried several times, starting up with the restore disk. Disk Utility will not format it either, all options remain greyed out. The new drive is a ST3160811AS, the profiler says SMART status is Not Supported if that is relevant.
power mac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 ram, dual 1.8,

That's odd...the link doesn't work but I can do a search and access the popst from there...so I copied and pasted the text from the post
"Some of you might know that Seagate 7200.9 series SATA drives have had a problem when installed inside a PowerMac G5 because the G5s are not compatible with the Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) feature on those drives.
Apparently, Seagate has been paying close attention to this problem, because they have recently begun shipping some of these drives with SSC disabled.
The clue to whether a 7200.9 drive has SSC disabled is in the part number. If the part number has a suffix that is NOT -301, the drive has SSC disabled, which means that you can install it in a G5 without first installing it in a PC and running Seagate's MS-DOS utility to disable the feature.
For example a 400GB drive with SSC disabled would be ST3400633AS-303.
In case you don't know, SSC is a feature intended to reduce electronic emissions (EMI) in large multi-drive installations. These drives meet EMI standards for a single drive without SSC enabled.
FYI. FWIW."
Do a search on 7200.9, SSC and you'll see several threads which may help you solve the problem....I'm afraid it sounds like the old SSC issue.

  • Data migration from rescued drive to new internal drive

Need assistance! I recently experienced a hard drive failure on my MacBook (OS 10.5). Apple replaced my hard drive with a new one (running 10.6), and a data recovery company was able to resuce the data from my failed drive; they put it all on an external drive. I then used migration assistant to get my old data back onto the new drive. The problem is that my old home folder was encrypted with File Vault, so that data would not transfer -- i.e., my photos, music, bookmarks, old emails, etc.
I've tried booting up from the external drive, but no dice. The laptop sees the drive and looks like it attempts to start up from it, but it just keeps spinning. Are there any other tricks to access my old home folder in order to turn off File Vault so that I may transfer that data onto my new hard drive?

I tried it and i got the runtime error with "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library"
When I tried a part of options, that is no problem at all. However, when i select all options, the memory usage is increase and then the error will be returned.
The server is Win2003 with 4GB memory.

  • Moving system from old internal drive to new internal drive! Best Method.

Hi all. I know this is probably a no-brain er for you guys, but I have just reinstalled my Leopard O/S on my MP plus all my software, hardware, drivers, files, emails etc. but I now wish to put this nice new pristine system on my newest Hard Drive. My question is what the most efficient way to do this.

    SuperDuper

    Even Disk Utility -> Restore.
With your old drive as your backup, and for emergency repairs.
Cloning drives and systems is pretty straight forward.

  • OS 10.3.9 and adding a new internal drive

    Hi -
    I have a G5 1.8ghz Dual with the original 80gig hard drive.
I would like to add a new internal drive. After reading post I like the WD SE16 500 GB sata drive.
Do I have to upgrade to OS 10.4? I know I should but do I have to do this first. Also can I boot off the WD Drive.

Great drive. No OS limitation. It does work. There was one 400GB model a year or two ago that would not work in early G5s. The 500GB model is fine.
    Check out http://www.xlr8yourmac.com
OWC also has Maxtor 300GB MaxLine III $73 if you want a couple smaller and less expensive.
I think 10.4.9 is nice and good time to upgrade.

  • Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • Move Users folders from external drive to a new internal drive

    Hi All,
I have a white Intel iMac running Snow Leopard. I have kept the Users folder (4 users) on an external hard disk (too many photos and movies). The internal hard disk recently died, but since all user data was on the external, I wasn't too worried.
The iMac now has a new hard disk, and I've installed the system back, starting from the original System Install DVD so that all the iApps are also reinstalled.
What I want to do now is to move the user folders to the internal drive, and use the external for backups. It seems that I can't use Migration Assistant because it only works when moving data from another Mac or another startup drive. I've looked around the forums and on the web, and the only thing I found was a post on TUAW in which the writer talked about eventually having to do this but without giving much info about how to do it (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/14/tuaw-tip-moving-your-home-folder-to-another-disk- or-moving-it).
Does anyone have any experience moving the user folders from an external drive to an internal drive, (or even just having a Mac recognize user folders on an external drive from another machine)?

Thanks, but that site doesn't have a clear answer.
Correct. As it clearly states, there are too many variables to have detailed solutions for every possible situation.
In the 'pink' box, which best matches my situation, the instructions begin with: "•You must be logged on to the account being moved...".
That's not clear at all. How do I log in to an account that doesn't exist yet? Connecting a hard disk that has a home folder to a new Mac doesn't allow me to 'log on' to that home folder's account, because it doesn't yet exist on the new Mac.
You may have to set up user accounts "from scratch." Then change the ownership and permissions on the old home folders so you can copy the contents of the sub-folders from the old home folders to the new ones.
If you're comfortable with permissions and Terminal, this may help: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20013630-263.html

I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average person? Would be cheaper to buy an external drive than to replace internal one? Any advice is appreciated

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting.   On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
    Can you order same? yes.

  • Could not see my photos after Installing new internal drive

Aaarrgghhh! I installed a new internal drive to keep data separate from applications, transferred all the data to the new drive and now all the work I did in sorting thousands of photos has gone, same with iTunes. Does anytone know how to restore my categories of photos and tunes?
    thanks

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff: What version of iPhoto. What version of the Operating System. Details. What were you doing when the problem arose? Did it ever work properly? Step-by-step descriptions of how you got to this issue. If something doesn't work, are there error messages? What happens when you try to do this thing? And what steps have you tried already to solve the issue. With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that a helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Can I transfer OS 10.5 from an external hard drive to my internal drive?

A few months ago my 2008 Macbook died (water damage), fortunately the hard drive was fine and I had it placed in an external USB 2.0 enclosure and have been using it with an older (2006) Macbook.
This setup has been working fine for me but lately I've been wanting to run some software that won't work under OS 10.4. I have OS 10.5 installed on the hard drive that I'm now using externally, so I'm wondering if there's any way to run OS 10.5 from the external drive or to transfer the OS from the external drive to the internal drive. I tried to boot from the external drive by holding down the "option" key on restart but the drive didn't show up.
The optical drive on the Macbook I'm currently using doesn't work, so I can't just install the OS from the CD (which would, admittedly, be a lot easier).
If there isn't any way to run OS 10.5 from the external drive, I'd like to delete it to free up space on my external drive (no point in having those files if I can't use them) does anyone know which files to erase?
    Thanks in advance.

How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

  • I'm having a hard time booting from external drive to rewrite everything on new internal drive

I got this Powerbook used w/o any startup or software disks. It has some valuable software on it. It is over 7 years old and I want to put the system and all software and other files on a new internal hard drive. I bought two Western Digital drives to accomplish this but have been unable so far. I have used SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner to successfully write everything onto the external drive after partitioning it Apple Partition Map. Neither Other World Computing (where I got the drives) or Western Digital have been of any use at all with advice. When I have the new clean drive in the Mac and the external connected by firewire and turn the Mac on while holding down the Option key all I get is a blank screen with a circular arrow and a right-pointing arrow and a mouse pointer. Clicking on either does nothing. If it is not possible to do it this way then can you suggest an alternate route?
My system: Powerbook G4 OSX 10.5.8 1.5GHz PowerPC.
New internal hard drive: WD 160GB Scorpio Blue.
External drive: same but the connector is for use only in an enclosure.
    Wiring available: firewire or USB

  • Hard drive failure, new hard drive won't boot

    Toshiba Satellite A665
I bought this laptop 14 months ago, last month the laptop refused to boot. It would say:
    Isolinux disk error 05, ax4250, drive 9f
    Boot failed
Often times on boot it would just show the black screen with a blinking underscore.
I tried all my known methods and nothing so I took it to a couple of shops. Both said that the hard drive was beyond repairable and not recoverable.
So I bought a new hard drive, installed it with the Toshiba recovery media. The recovery and install on new and drive went well. Had to restart, and upon restart, the original problem came up again- black screen with blinking underscore. I am unable to boot up. Any suggestions?
    Thank you all

    AHA, just fan issue?
    Tukaine
    Sep 23, 2012 10:59 PM
Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control
