Switching computers i sync with..will i lose everything?

currently, my iphone 3gs is synced with a windows computer, and id like to switch to sync it with my mac. will i lose all my text messages, apps, ect?
i know i can save my contacts in google, but what about everything else? if i back it up on the mac, and then sync all new music, will the backup still keep all the texts and pictures?

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with music and video with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first. SMS/MMS are not iTunes content or photos transferred from your computer and are not included with the iTunes sync process except for being included with your iPhone's backup. SMS/MMS are not touched with syncing an iPhone with another computer as in this situation.
If you transfer your iTunes library from your PC to your Mac per the instructions included with this link, no iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased with the first sync with iTunes on your Mac. This assumes you have Sync Apps selected under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your PC which means all apps on your iPhone are in your iTunes library on your PC where they should be.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
This will replace your iTunes library on your Mac with your iTunes library on your PC. If your Mac's iTunes library imcludes any content that you don't want to lose, you can have more than one iTunes library available on your Mac. Or you can transfer all iTunes content on your iPhone to your iTunes library on your Mac that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store. This assumes you used the same iTunes account on your PC as is used on your Mac. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. This will copy all iTunes content on your iPhone that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
Photos/videos in your iPhone's Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. With a Mac, you can use iPhoto or the Image Capture application for this. The Camera Roll is not touched when syncing an iPhone with iTunes on another computer.
With a Mac, the iPhone supports syncing contacts with the Address Book application. If the Address Book is empty, it contains no contacts that you have entered or imported, before the first sync for this data enter one contact in the Address Book on your Mac. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select. The same if the Address Book already includes any contacts that you entered or imported. Syncing contacts with the Address Book is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. The same applies before and with syncing calendar events with iCal on your Mac.

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
    and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
    and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

You will not lose them and you will not be able to transfer them into iTunes. Your Kindle books are maintained in your Amazon account, not in iTunes. You manage all of your Kindle books with Amazon.com.
However, if you have never synced with iTunes before, you may need to make the iTunes library your syncing library. Have you synced with this computer before?

  • Disabled ipod and the computer it was in sync with is broken...will I lose everything?

My daughter's ipod touch has been disabled.  My problem is that I never did sync this ipod with my new and only computer.  Will she lose everything if a reset?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

In case you're not clear - iPad/iPhone storage, and iCloud storage, are totally separate. Buying more iCloud storage does not give you more storage space on your device. Your device has a fixed storage space for apps and data (e.g., 16GB - which is more like 12GB in real terms). iCloud storage just allows you to store more documents, mail, photos, etc, in the cloud.

  • Laptop synced to iPhone is almost dead, if I back iTunes up and plug phone into another pc will I lose everything?

My laptop is extremely old and I no longer trust it as its broken on me before.
If I back up my iTunes and put that disc into another pc will I keep all pics, apps, etc or will I lose everything?
    Please help!

When you go in Preference -> Extension, you can see a folder.
In this you have all data from your iTunes(BackUp, Music, Apps, i think photo also)
    -     Copy(BackUp) this folder.
    -     install iTunes on the new pc (same iTunes Version ist better)
    -     Copy the backup folder on the new pc.
    and it works.
Please check the folder and search for your photos.
I hope you can understand my bad english

  • What does it mean when my ipad is in Recovery mode? It's connected to my imac for software update and it says I must "restore" the ipad before itunes can be used. Will I lose everything on my ipad?

What does it mean when my ipad is in Recovery mode? It's connected to my imac for software update and it says I must "restore" the ipad before itunes can be used. Will I lose everything on my ipad?

Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now.

  • HT1212 When I plug in my iphone into itunes for the first time will i lose everything?

Ive had my iphone for over a year now and it is rather full so was hoping to take stuff off of it and add it to my pc to make room on my phone but i havent yet had it hooked up to itunes on my pc so will i lose everything? please help!

Well, you certainly aren't using it the way Apple intended or describes in the manual, and you have been running a huge risk of losing everything. But if you have never synced it with any computer at all you shouldn't lose anything by syncing now. In iTunes on your computer open Preferences/Devices tab, and check the box to not automatically sync. Then connect the phone. When it appears in iTunes click on its name, then choose "Back Up Now". After you have backed up you can sync safely. If you have photos in the Camera Roll transfer them to a photo app on your computer the same way you would for any digital camera (not using iTunes).

  • TS1363 my phone crashed earlier today, i did update it to iOS5 around July 14, if i restore from my iTunes acct on home computer will i lose everything?

my iphone 3gs crashed today, if i restore will i lose everything on it?

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...
To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...

If necessary Place the Device into Recovery mode...

  • Will I lose everything if I delete my last back up

I got a new 5s two weeks ago and backed it up from my old phone. Now it won't back up due to lack of space. I have deleted and turned items off and this hasn't helped. The only thing left to try is deleting my last back up from my old phone. I want to know if doing so will I lose everything and have to start from scratch or as a new phone and not from last back up!?!? Please help!!

Yes. So back up first if it's something you're considering. Right-click on the device name in iTunes and click Backup. This does not back up media (music, etc), so sync that with iTunes first if it's not already on your computer.

  • Will I lose everything on my iphone if I restore it

Will I lose everything on my iphone if I restore it. photos, contacts, music

    It will erase everything.
If you have been using the iphone as designed, tehn everything will be on your computer, and you can sync it back.
You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your comptuer regularly as you would with any digital camera.
You should have been syncing your iphone contacts with your computer from day one.
All music should be on your computer in itunes.
Have you failed to do these things?

Yes. So back up first if it's something you're considering. Right-click on the device name in iTunes and click Backup. This does not back up media (music, etc), so sync that with iTunes first if it's not already on your computer.

  • My daughter wants her own itunes account.  will she lose everything from my account?

My daughter wants her own itunes account.  Will she lose everything from our shared account?

    Hi Randy,
John is correct, there is no true "sharing" it's more like right of use, but she can still use all the stuff she has from your account on her device, it's just a little tricky. My daughter has had her own account for over a year but she had used my account before that. She has her own iPod, Macbook Pro, and now she just bought her own iPhone.
It had never been a big deal to her until she got her phone because she has to use only her account, my e-mail and stuff she does not need on her phone. So use Home Sharing on your computer with her login and her login on her device. The biggest question is are you using two computers or one? With just a single computer it may make it harder because you really have no way of home sharing (I may stand correctly by someone else though). With two computers you just setup home sharing, login to both iTunes accounts with her login, use her computer (or the second computer) and drag all the stuff over to that iTunes library, music, apps, etc. Then they will be on her computer. Then she just drags them on to her iOS device. They will copy and she can use them.
There is no way around updates though. They can only be updated with the original account, which I believe why John stated use iTunes Plus first, because the will not play at all under a different account login. The only advantage that my daughter wanted to use this for was progress on games, so she wouldn't have to start over. Most of our stuff are free downloads so it was not even a repurchase issue as much as time on a game issue.
If you use only one computer, it should work the same way but I have not tried it so I can not say for sure. Logout of you account name and drag the stuff to her iOS device.
