When setting up my ipod a couple years ago i set it up to my laptop. Well my laptop is still working but something is wrong with the internet connection and i cannot access itunes store to download songs anymore. I would like to connect my ipod to a different computer as well but am scared i will loose all my songs if i do. I also have no idea how to connect it to another computer. And if I do try to connect it to another computer and loose my songs, when i reconnect it to my laptop will the songs be transfered back to my ipod? please help because if i lost my songs i would be devistated!

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer change the update preference to manual on your first computer and you can safely connect to another.

The iCloud backup does not include non-Tunes purchased music and photos that were synced to the iPod. The iCloud backup does not also included a few other things included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.

From your description, it sounds like you may have been using the SMS feature of Continuity in iOS 8. If this is the case and it has somehow become misconfigured after a recent change, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

I haven't researched it and I don't claim to know everything about iTunes, but it has always been my understanding that you can only use one computer per iPod, but you can have multiple iPods per computer. From what I understand, this is to prevent illegal sharing and whatnot.

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the new/different PC as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is consolidate of your iTunes content onto either one of the PCs and then sync your iPod with just that one PC.

my ipod mini was connected to my computer and i was uploading some new music onto it. I was doing a disk cleanup on my comp. at the same time which wasn't affecting my ipod but then all of a sudden the screen went blank on my ipod and my computer wouldn't recognise my ipod even if i unplugged it and put it back in again.

PC wont switch on with ipod connected

I have recently purchased a brand new pc with running with an AMD chip. I have installed all of my old software, including the ipod/itunes disk that came with the mini, and updated the mini and pc with latest itunes software. Everything seems to be fine with the pc running and the ipod connected. Swith off/restart and the computer freezes after the system logo flashes up and goes no further. Remove the ipod, restart, business as usual.
I have tried resetting, reinstalling, etc but no joy. The ipod is connected via USB to PC with the firewire going to the power out.
Would be grateful for any suggestions

have tried with the firewire instead of the usb and it works, so it would seem to be the bios selecting external USB before the hard drive on boot as described in the link
need to wait till monday now to contact fs as they have not included any instruction as to how to get into the bios to make any changes, but i can use the firewire in the meantime

MacBook loses wireless connection when iPod touch connects to network

ever since upgrading to 10.5.5. on my MacBook i've had the "intermittent network connection" problems that have been described and discussed (without any real solution from what i can see) in another thread.
PROBLEM: every couple of minutes my MacBook loses connectivity to the network - the AirPort icon still says that i'm connected, albeit with one less bar than before, but i can't connect to anywhere, not even to the wireless router - and to re-establish a connection i need to switch off AirPort, switch it back on, it will then reconnect, and after two minutes or so i have to do it all over again because the network connection drops again.
NOVEL OBSERVATION 1: reinstalling the 10.5.5. combo system updater helped somewhat. i used to get an error in system.log about there being too many state transitions on the wireless network and about network traffic reduction measures being taken to overcome this problem, but after reinstalling the 10.5.5. combo system updater this message never appears in the logs and I get kicked off only sometimes (see what i say in point 2 below)
NOVEL OBSERVATION 2: now my MacBook will only lose its connection to the net if i switch on my iPod Touch and switch its wireless interface on. in fact, the only way to avoid the MacBook getting constantly disconnected is to make sure that the wireless interface on the Touch is switched off in the Touch's system preferences; if I just sleep the Touch (top button) without switching off its wireless network interface first in its System Preferences, then the MacBook will keep disconnecting even while the Touch is in sleep mode (presumably the Touch keeps polling the network or something, even while it's in sleep mode).
DIAGNOSTIC NOTE 1: I have another wireless device (my Nokia E51, which has wifi capabilities) and if I connect it to the wireless interface then the MacBook's connection isn't dropped - i.e. the MacBook only loses its wireless connection when my iPod Touch connects to the wireless network.
DIAGNOSTIC NOTE 2: I have upgraded my wireless router (before I had a Linksys WRT-54GC, now I have a Netgear WGR614v9) but that has made no difference.
DIAGNOSTIC NOTE 3: I have also tried altering the router's settings (i have played around a_lot with this, trying every combination I could think of - e.g. staple down particular devices to particular ip addresses, use only 802.11g versus automatic b/g, etc) but that has made no difference either.
RANT:
The only thing that prevents these disconnections from occurring is to keep the iPod Touch's wireless switched off, which ***** because if I'm in the kitchen I can't have it switched on to monitor my email (yes, I've no life, i hang around waiting for emails), or if I go have a lie down and want to check out stuff on the net, or to browse the iTunes music store or whatever, then I know that my connecting my iPod Touch the computer will be disconnected.
This obviously *****, right? And a lot of people are having wireless problems with their MacBooks, right? And these problems seem to have been around for over a year, right?
So why hasn't Apple solved this problem yet? Or am I just being melodramatic?

Having the same problem here. As a first time mac user, Apple has certainly made a bad first impression.
For me, the issue seems to occur when transferring files between computers that are connected to the same access point (when transferring files from wired computers on the network there is no issue). My vista laptop and every laptop I have tried has worked perfectly fine with this access point so I am 100% convinced it is the mac. Basically when I copy the files, after about 100mb, I am unable to access anything on the local network or internet until I restart Airport. The weird thing is that even though I am unable to access anything, the airport utility says it is connected. I might also note that the wireless signal strength is full.
If I can't get this figured out in a few days, this computer is going back to the store where it came from and I will officially label myself anti-mac. This type of issue is just unacceptable for something so main stream.

The absolute best way to do this is to transfer your iTunes library from the old computer to the new one. You can find a numbr of ways to do that here.

If you want to spend the money for a computer application that will let you transfer all of the content from the iPad to iTunes - look at
Touchcopy
However, I have posted this many times over the past few months. If you follow these instructions you should be fine. This will transfer the purchased content from the iPad into iTunes on the Mac. You will still want to get your photo library and any CD's that you imported into iTunes on the new Mac. That is why transferring the iTunes library to the new Mac is the best way to go.
When you set up the new Mac - if you can import or migrate all of the PC content onto the Mac - this will all be a non issue, but I'm not sure how to bring all of your PC content onto the Mac. Going from an old Mac to a new Mac was a breeze, but I know nothing about transferring the content from a Windows PC.
The 3 basic things to remember - authorize the computer, (Launch iTunes on your computer and go to Store>Authorize this Computer) transfer purchased content and backup.

1) Without connecting your iPad to your Mac, start iTunes. Click on iTunes. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.

If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.

The worst case scenario is that you can download all of your apps again if needed - but you will not retain the data or app settings - but it is always an option if everything else fails - but it won't fail!

Itunes not responding when ipod is connected.

first i should say that my ipod has been acting slow the past couple days. if i'm scrolling through songs it will frequently freeze for a few seconds before moving on to the next song that i scrolled to. plugging my ipod into my computer last night i noticed my itunes page was black with a few words showing. after fiddling with it for awhile i unplugged my ipod and the itunes screen disappeared as soon as i did. today when i turned on my computer, with my ipod already connected, the black itunes screen appeared again. this did not make any of my computers other functions slower.. it was just annoying as i couldn't minimize it or exit the program. i went to task manager to try to end program but that didn't work. again i simply unplugged my ipod and the screen went away as soon as i did. i brought up itunes without the ipod connected and it came up fine, it plays music, and it runs smooth, but as soon as i connect the ipod it will freeze and i can't do anything until i disconnect. i'm not sure how to fix this problem and with the sluggish-ness of my ipod before i connected i started thinking maybe my ipod has a bug. i have the latest version of itunes installed, and i have vista on my computer. any help would be appreciated! thanks!

Fix for "Unknown Device" when the iPod is connected

After a few long nights, a few headaches, hours and hours of reading, thinking and many toasted sandwiches, I finally found the problem to my iPod not loading. Putting together information I had read here and at many other sites I had a brainwave... and sure enough it worked. I figure this may be helpful to many other iPod users, so... here I am posting my solution. Note though, this wont help all users, but I know I wasnt alone with this issue, and this just might help someone.
Ill list the issue I was having (this may help other people identify their issue to mine) was that the iPod failed to work on windows, and threw a fit when plugged in. Windows did too, iTunes would lock up and the iPod software failed to recognise that an iPod was connected. The iPod had worked on an older PCs before, but it failed to work on my new homebuilt PC. When I first connected the iPod it began to work, transferring and updating.. but then it unexpectedly disconnected the iPod.. and mentioned something to do with an I/O error, the iPod had to be disconnected and it also mentioned something to do with a timeout error and dataloss (or as it put it Data has been destroyed. Thats always a pleasant message to read). Suddenly, half the music on my iPod wouldn't play, it skipped songs until it found a song it would play... really annoying. I tried to format the iPod using the iPod software... buuut it told me that it wasnt an iPod that was connected (Funny that... lol). After the first iPod crash, it would react differently when connected. It would once again pop up with the Found new hardware bubble, Apple iPod..., Disk Drive... ... then iTunes loads... then iTunes freezes... then the iPod disconnects 2 mins later, then iTunes unfreezes. THEN the next time the iPod is connected, it would say it was an Unknown device, and that it has Malfunctioned.
It seems that, oddly enough, my iPod (I own the 30gig iPod Photo) does not like USB 2.0... Im thinking that it must not support some of the device commands the PC is sending to it... Weird though, because on other USB 2.0 PCs it worked fine. (I got the best results out of Dell PCs...). IF USB 2.0 is disabled and slows to USB 1.1 the iPod works a charm... jumped up without an issue in the world. To disable USB 2.0, jump into BIOS as your pc is in its POST stages... this being, when the PC is first turned on and presents a message such as Press DEL to enter setup (or something similar), do so. Then refer to your manual on how to disable USB 2.0, if possible. Apply the changes and reboot. Be sure not to mess around with other settings, it is very easy to mess up your computer if you change settings you are not familiar with.
Other solutions would be to run the iPod via Firewire... if you can get a cable. Run along to your local mac store and see if they have one in stock. Ill get back on here to post if using Firewire solved the issue later.
Perhaps a motherboard BIOS upgrade, or newer drivers could resolve the issue. This may explain to some people why their iPod stopped working overnight after working fine for so long, maybe an update of the sort was installed. Apparently my motherboard already has an update, so Ill test that sometime and post my results as I investigate further, but as for now Im just happy my iPod is working, even if it is taking ages to transfer (25 gigs of music takes awhile over USB 1.1 lol...).
Also, I might add that my motherboard is an ASUS P5P800 with the Intel 865PE chipset. It could be an interesting pattern seeing which motherboards do not seem to be compatible with the iPod at USB 2.0 speeds.
As long as this post was I hope that someone gets some use out of it. Ill post further findings as I investigate this matter further.

the best explanation for this that i've seen is that there can be power drain problems in USB 2.0. drop below 500 mA running through the port and everything goes to pot. this may well explain why switching back to USB 1.1 sometimes works like a charm, and also explains why it's important to have the ipod plugged into a high powered USB port rather than a low power port.
i've seen a confirmed case of a USB connection going west after a scanner got plugged into the beast in question ... periodically i see other reports along these lines, too.

Computer will not boot when iPod is connected

Hi everyone,
First time Mac user here, so I'm not very experienced when it comes to troubleshooting - there may be a very simple fix for this, but I've searched online and come up with nothing so far.
I've recently bought a 20" Intel-based iMac (Core 2 Duo). I'm using Boot Camp (1.1.2 Beta) to dual boot with Windows. I already owned a 30gb iPod, which has previously been used with a Windows laptop. The iPod has disk mode enabled as I use it for transporting data as well as music and video.
Now that I'm using the iMac as my main comptuer, I keep the iPod docked & connected whenever I'm not out of the house in order to keep it charged & synchronised. However, if the iMac has to restart for any reason (like switching between Mac OS and Windows, or rebooting after a system update), it will not continue booting after making the chime sound. The screen remains white, holding the option key does not display the Boot Camp menu, and no matter how long it's left like this it will not continue to boot either OS. Pressing the Power button causes the computer to immediately switch off. Turning it on again after removing the iPod from the dock results in it booting normally.
Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Because you said you use the iPod as an external hard drive, I am going to assume that it's not a nano, shuffle, or mini. What I suspect is that the computer is trying to boot from the iPod because the iPod actually has a hard drive in it, and the iMac thinks that it's an external hard drive that it can boot from. In the future, I would disconnect the iPod before each time you shut-down or restart your iMac.

MacBook/iMac won't boot if iPod is connected

Neither my iMac Core 2 Duo or MacBook Core 2 Duo will boot when my 5th generation (mk 1) iPod is connected. The Mac just sits at the grey screen that initially appears when you first switch the Mac on. No Apple logo, nothing. As soon as you remove the iPod the Mac boots. I have tried leaving the machine for 20 minutes but it still just sits at the grey screen if the Pod is connected.

If you have the dock disconnected (and everything else except an Apple keyboard and mouse, and the iPod) and it still happens, then the first thing I'd be wondering about would be a conflict with the driver software for one of the other devices.
One good first step might be to make sure that there are no "non-universal" device drivers installed - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303209 for details.

Folder with Exclaimation Point Error AND Ipod cannot connect to itunes

I left my Ipod in my truck (cold out) for about a week, using it about every other day (always seemed to work fine)... then all of the sudden I went to turn it on and after the Apple icon, I get an error in the form of a picture of a folder with an exclaimation point. When I try to plug my ipod into my computer (to perhaps restore the settings or something) my computer recognizes the USB device, the ipod screen says "do not disconnect" and then shortly after, without it connecting to itunes, it disconnects itself and goes back to the apple screen. Any Ideas? The Apple instructions for dealing with this havn't worked.
My Ipod is I believe a "second generation"(?). It is a 20-gig ipod with a click wheel, about 2 years old now.

For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.
