Switching files from Mac to PC (via an EHD)

Hoping this is the right forum ... I have a Toshiba 500gb external hard drive. I've been using it to back up data and to switch work, etc. between my usual computer (eMac) and a laptop (Dell). Since a recent crash on the Mac I decided to do a full back up of the hard drive. The best way to do this seemed to be to partition the EHD, so I created an 80gb section for the HD back up and left the rest for my usual use (occasional back ups, storing films/music, moving between Mac and PC, etc.). When I came to connecting the EHD to the PC, though, I discovered it was no longer recognised - presumably because in partitioning the EHD, I'd formatted it for the Mac using disk utility (which I'd never done before). So, my question is, how to proceed? - is it possible to create a section on the EHD which would be unformatted and would therefore work on the PC as well as the Mac, and if so do I have to start the whole process again? i.e. wipe the EHD clean, and create three partitions. And can this all be done using disk utility, or would I need to use some other means?
Any help with this would be gratefully received.

OK. How would I do that? And would it mean starting again? i.e. I'd have to wipe the drive and repartition it. Or can I just format part of it with FAT without interfering with the rest?

If it is just a few files or folders you want to back up you can just drag and drop. Or you can use SyncTwoFolders to keep the backups up to date.
If you want to back up your entire start-up disk use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner, both of which can make a bootable clone of your entire start-up drive.

Hi i have a mac with osx 10.4.8 and a pc, i need to transfer a large amount of files from mac to pc (around 200GB)
Now i have lots of external HDs which are all used by either the PC or the macs. the ones formatted for the macs cannot be read atall by the PC without some expensive software, the PC formatted one i have appears to be readable on the mac, but when i try to copy the files onto it or change anything, i am not able to change/add anythingn due to permissions problems.
Not sure what to do, i have quite a few HDs with plenty of sapce, but if they are all in the wrong format i cant really wipe/reformat them easily with files on them, nor do i want to buy yet another HDD just to transfer some files....
Any ideas/advice?

well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

Your external drive is formatted NTFS which OS X can read from but not write to. You can either install third-party software on the Mac to enable writing to the drive or repartition and reformat the drive for exclusive use with the Mac. If you don't need to move files between a Mac and a PC, then I would recommend the latter solution.

1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Are you doing these transfers over a Network connection, the systems are networked together over your Home LAN? Or are you doing it with an external drive?
If an external drive Mac OS X can READ Windows NTFS formatted drives but can NOT WRITE to them. So you can co[py files to the drive on your Win PC and READ them on the Mac but Mac OS X can not Write to that drive so you can't copy files from Mac to that drive.
For an external drive to work on both systems, be able to Read and Write from/to that drive, it has to be formatted either FAT32 or exFAT.

We have shared mounted drives in AIX Fusion that we can pull files from and copy to the mac, however we can not copy files from the mac to the drives.

The drives are mapped on the mac using SMB. We can go to the files on the mac and use “save as” and this works and saves them on the shared drives.
We can not drag and copy them to the shared drives. Every time it fails and we get the above error. We can create folders but not move any files.
When we look up the error, it is referring to certain characters that can but used in a Max OS X filename and are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. We are not using any of the characters not allowed.
The drives have all the basic set up in AIX, RWC. All the PC's we have can drag files to and from all our shared drives.

Either install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, or MacDrive on the PC, or reformat any drives you'll be using to share files between the computers as either FAT32 or exFAT.

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available.
