Switching for Cisco IPT

Here is a question a customer emailed me today
" so im looking at the Cisco IPT solution and its impressive. after noticing the costing, i see no way of justifying the switching infrastructure. our entire organization is based on dell switching and Cisco routers.
we intend to stay with this as our switches are new has QOS and POE enabled as well as IEE power compliant as i understand and will work with the Cisco Phone models. we can also acheive the same measure of redundancy as proposed in the 3-layer model that Cisco applies. please advise as to if there are any limitations of these switches as i cannot see any at this point in time"
from a pre-sales prospective how do you justify changing to Cisco, and more importantly, from a TECHNICAL prospective do we convince the customer to change or leave?

In terms of implementation and operation: if you follow the separate VLANs for voice and data model - which you probably should - you will have to manually set the correct VLAN on every phone in the phone settings. phones use CDP to discover voice VLAN. I've done a deployment with non-Cisco switches such as this, and it definately slows things down. Of course you don't want to hurt any feelings, but... there is a reason Dell was giving away their switches for free a few years back. I like to save money too, but I wouldn't stake my business on running critical infrastructure this level of switch.

Has anyone develped an EM plug-in for Cisco switches or routers? Please reply to this thread if you have developed one and would like to share your experience in developing this plug-in?
    Thanks,

It's probably not the conversion from CMYK to RGB that's causing the problem, but color profile (ICC) embedding in Photoshop. Fireworks doesn't read color profiles. You might be able to create an action to remove the color profile in Photoshop and then batch process the images with it.

    Hi All,
I need SNMP MIB files for Cisco SF 300-48 48-Port 10/100 Managed Switch.
I have gone through cisco site but not able to get it.
Can anyone please provide me.I have stuck with this.
    Thanks
    Ram

Hi Ram, yes the MIB can be used. The switches are essentially the same in many regards (especially on a software level).
I do not know the OID for bandwidth. If you're looking for a particular OID may be this tool helps you

  • Challenge: Spanning Tree Control Between 2 links from Switch DELL M6220 to 2 links towards 2 switches CISCO 3750 connected with an stack (behavior like one switch for redundancy)

    Hello,
I have an Spanning tree problem when i conect  2 links from Switch DELL M6220 (there are blades to virtual machines too) to 2 links towards 2 switches CISCO 3750 connected with an stack (behavior  like one switch  for redundancy, with one IP of management)
In dell virtual machine is Spanning tree rapid stp, and in 3750 is Spanning tree mode pvst, cisco says that this is not important, only is longer time to create the tree.
I dont know but do you like this solutions i want to try on sunday?:
Could Spanning tree needs to work to send one native vlan to negociate the bdpus? switchport trunk native vlan 250
Is it better to put spanning-tree guard root in both 3750 in the ports to mitigate DELL to be root in Spanning Tree?
Is it better to put spanning- tree port-priority in the ports of Swicht Dell?
¿could you help me to control the root? ¿Do you think its better another solution? thanks!

  • Network ready for Cisco wireless ?

I know for IPT their is lots of network readiness guides. Is their anything like that for Cisco wireless (with central controler)? We looking at putting in Dell swithcs and not cisco. Anybody have any switch level feture I should be looking out for?

For autonomous you would likely need less features on a switch then with autonomous access points. I'm not a fan of Dell switches, but at the edge they should be fine. With the lightweight APs you don't have to trunk to the access points ('cept H-REAP configs), so you could potentially plug them into hubs!
I would probably look for a PoE midspan if you are not using the new 3560E swithes. Microsemi sells a managed hi-power midspan that support all Cisco access points all the way up to the 1250s (and assumptively beyond). Purchasing 802.3af PoE now seems like a bad idea.

  • MDS FC Blade Switch for IBM - Licensing

    Hi,
our customer has got installed the 20-port-switch of the "Cisco MDS Fibre Channel Blade Switch for IBM BladeCenter". He wants to change some of the links now. For that reason he asked me:
    - Is there a fix relationship between a port and a license?
    - Can we use any port as long as we fall below the number of licenses?
    Thanks in advance and regards
    Matthias

    Hello Matthias,
Cisco Fabric Switch for IBM BladeCenter (20 ports; 14 internal 2/4 Gbps, and 6 external full-rate ports) licenses for internal ports are allocated as the ports come up. Licenses for external ports are allocated sequentially.
Refer "On-Demand Port Licensing" section on CLI guide here :
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/storage/san_switches/mds9000/sw/rel_3_x/configuration/guides/cli_3_3/ondport.html
Customer can select the specific external ports he wants licensed.
    switch# config t
    switch(config)# interface fc1/1
    switch(config-if)#port-license acquire
    Thanks,
    Prateek

  • Hardware Needed for Cisco 2911 as a console server

    Hi,
We need to setup Cisco 2911 router as a console server for OOB (Out of band) connectivity to console of each DC device (upto 20 devices) Could someone please respond to the following questions we had:
    1. What interface module can we install on the 2911 ISR for this purpose?
    2. What cable (part number please) will go to the that 2911-ISR interface slot and then we can connect the consoel ports of out network devices to that cable.
It needs to be something similar to the cisco octal cable which I know we used for Cisco 2500 series for console purposes to other devices. But not sure about Cisco 2911.
I would highly appreciate your information and help.
    Thanks
    Lovleen

You would need an interface providing asynchronous serial ports. Something like the HWIC-8A or the HWIC-16A. Needing 20 ports you will most likely use one of each type (having then 24 ports).
The cable to connect to the HWIC is the CAB-HD8-ASYNC. If you attach routers and switches console ports directly to the RJ45 plugs everything is fine. If you have other types of serial ports to serve (DB-9 or DB-25) then you need the according adapters. I don't know if they have product numbers...

  • POE from 3524PWR Switch for 1130AG AP?

We have a bunch of 1130AG LWAPP access points that we are installing in various locations. Those locations with newer 802.3af switches such as the 3750's and 3560's power the AP's without issue. However we have mixed results plugging them in to older Cisco POE only 3524PWR Switches.
For the most part if we plug the 1130AG's into the 3524PWR's with short patch cords they power the radios up. However, if we connect them to a longer network line (80 to 100 feet) they disable the radios and WCS alarms tell me that the switch could not supply enough power for the radios.
The Quick Start Guide (page 14) shows the 1130AG supporting both Cisco POE and 802.3af power. Is there any way to get these to reliable power up on 3524PWR switches or do I need to use power cords or power injectors?

    Hi Jim,
    We had this happen to us due to the same PoE problem. The 1130 requires either IEEE 802.3af power **or needs a setting on the WLC for using power injector or Cisco Pre-Standard PoE. Our older switches could only provide Cisco Pre-Standard PoE so we had to tweak the WLC Power setting for these AP's. Once we did that the Radios came right up. Here is a reference;
    You may have to enter the following info in the WLC;
While the AP boots, with its Intelligent Power Management feature, it negotiates with the switch via Cisco Discovery Protocol messages in order to provide the necessary power to the AP. Even though the power injector is connected to the AP, the AP that uses this Intelligent Power Management feature gives priority to the Cisco Discovery Protocol information in order to identify whether or not the switch can provide the power. Therefore, after the Cisco Discovery Protocol message shows that the switch does not provide sufficient power (since it is not an inline power capable switch), the AP disables its radios. At this time, the status LED of the AP turns orange and this error message is recorded:
[ERROR] : AP has not enough in-line power
to enable radio slot 1 In order to overcome this problem, issue the
config ap power injector enable installed
command on the controller that is connected with this AP. This command is available from controller version 3.2.116.21. Ensure that you use the correct version in the controller.
This command specifies that a power injector is used in order to supply sufficient power to the AP.

  • Cisco IPT and Microsoft System Centre Operations Manager

    Hi All
Does anybody used Cisco IPT with System Centre Operations Manager?
Does System Centre Operations Manager supports Cisco CallManager OS and Hardware for monitoring?
    Thanks
    VKS

    Hi David,
Thanks for your reply. I have gone through the links which you have mentioned. As per the Overview of Operations Manager 2007 R2 section in What's New & Improved in Operations Manager 2007 R2 document it is clearly mentioned the below points:
Delivers monitoring across Windows, Linux and Unix servers–all through a single console.
Extend end to end monitoring of distributed applications to any workload running on Windows, Unix and Linux platforms.
The Cisco Servers are also Windows and Linux Based.
