Switching from 15" Pro to 13" Air

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 15", 2.4gHz i5 with hi-res antiglare screen. I might be able to sell it and only add a hundred dollars or so to it to get a 2012 MacBook Air 13" base model, making it almost an even trade.
I don't use much of my hard drive space now, and the lack of a CD drive doesn't concern me. That being said, do you think this is a good switch to make?

I don't know....I think you'll be losing out on this deal.
Then again, everyone is different......I like the idea of being able to upgrade my Macbook - RAM & Hard Drive.
But, if portability is what you want, by all means go for it....
It's newer, lighter and it's quite portable.
good luck in deciding........

What cables are necessary for the fastest transfer of data from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

As I posted "it is an Unknown", at least to me, what type FW port is on the OPs older Mac.

But the newest Mac notebooks do not have a firewire port.
So he may need a TB to FW adapter, $29, a FW 400 or 800 cable, $??, and then a FW 400 to 800 cable/port adapter (If the old Mac only has a FW 400 port), $??.
It is unknown if the old Mac has a FW 400 or 800 port.

  • Having trouble migrating from macbook Pro to macbook Air?

Apple has kind of messed up with migration from older laptops to Macbook Air. With 140 GB to transfer onto my new Macbook Air, I took a big gulp when my new Air told me casually that it would take about 36 hours to migrate my stuff from my Pro to the new Air over the wireless network. OK, so I have a slow network, sue me. Apple's technical help was no help, and that's getting pretty common. The solution? A data transfer USB cable (PCMACLINK2   USB to USB Data Transfer Cable for Windows and Mac, Startech). A simple USB-USB connection and data transfer rates of around 480 MBS. I think we are good to go. BTW, why didn't Apple release a Firewire/Thunderbolt dongle? Making a new set of dongles for every new Mac seems to be de rigeur these days, so why not add one more? Oh, and Apple doesn't seem to carry a data transfer cable. FAIL!

    Hello,
I've  been pondering getting a Macbook Air but I want to find out if I can copy over Endnote X4 and Office from my Macbook Pro (Snow Leopard) to a new Macbook Air (Lion).
Is it just a matter of drag and drop or using Migrate Assistant or is there anything to worry about between different Macbooks, different versions of OS or some restriction on copying Apps?
Also, assuming a migration is possible, can I just use my Timemachine external drive or should I buy a cable instead?
    Thanks,
    Jason.

  • Switching from Creator Pro to INDCS2

My company is switching from MultiAd Creator Pro to InDesign CS2. Does anyone know how to create a "matrix" in InDesign CS2? Or does anyone know a similar feature in CS2

    Hi Scott,
In Creator, a matrix is a group of boxes that have been duplicated from one original box that's created by the user. Once the original box has the colors, type styles & sizes, spacing, graphics, etc., the box is selected and from the edit menu, "make matrix" is selected. From there the user inputs how many row, columns and how much space in between each row and column is needed, then the user drags out the matrix with the mouse to fit in whatever space they need it to fit. The benefit of the matrix is each box will be exactly the same - the program figures out the boxes will have to be scaled in order to fit into the space the matrix is dragged to fit. I hope that makes sense!
    Thank you!

  • I am changing macs from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air can I transfer application licenses to new device

I have a MacBook Pro 15 that I need to switch to a MacBook Air . I have applications like aperture, MS Office 2010, photoshop and others that I want to move to the air. I will be cleaning the drive on the MacBook Pro and selling it.
Is there a way to do this and still be compliant to the licenses?

Except for some very specialized licenses, yes you can do this. If you simply migrate your system from one to the other you should have all your apps on the new one and working fine. To be legal, just delete those apps once your new system is up and running fine.

  • Switching from Mac Mini to Macbook Air

Hello, this is my first post in this forum and I hope that I chose the right category.
Right now I'm running a Mac Mini 2011 Base model, that is the one with an 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and I have also upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.
I know want to take a step further into the Mac laptops and I have my eye on the Macbook Air but I have some questions.
The work I do is mostly writing code and light photo editing with Photoshop, no heavy photo editing or video rendering. I want to know which Macbook Air I should pick to get about the same performance as the 2011 Mac Mini that I'm running right now because I'm very happy with my Mac Mini.
    Here are some questions:
    1. How do the processors stand up to the Mac Mini? The latest Macbook Air of course runs the new Haswell processors but I'm uncertain if I should pick the upgraded i7 processor that's available. The Macbook Air has a lower clock frequency than the Mac Mini and I was wondering if the Macbook Air can stack up.
    2. Should I get the 11 inch or the 13 inch screen? I will be doing most of my work hooked up to an external monitor but sometimes I feel the need to sit down at an more comfortable place. Is there anyone who has any experience with web design/coding on an Macbook Air monitor?
I'm already planning on getting the 8GB of RAM upgrade and probably the 256GB SSD too.
I'm very thankful for any answer whatsoever!
    Sincerely,
    Fabian Lindfors

Mac Mini is great isnt it? Got a couple of them and typing on one now.
My new base model 2013 macbook Air I5 with 8gig of ram
vs. what im currently using now,... this Mac Mini QUAD CORE with 16 gig of ram.
Honestly on simplex Photoshop editing I notice NO difference between my quad core 16gig RAM Mac Mini and my Macbook Air 13" I5.
Ive had both 11" and 13" macbook Air, I really wouldn't go back to the 11".
Also the battery life in the 13" is a lot more than the 11".  Much larger Lithium Polymer battery packs on the 13"
Yes, get the 8gig of ram regardless
Here is an excellent video comparison between the 11” I5 vs. I7 2013 Macbook Air.

  • Moving files from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

My MacBook Pro's display is all crapped out (can't even view on external monitor) and I'm trying to transfer files over to my new MacBook Air.
How can I do this? Since there is no Firewire on my Air, I can't boot into target disk mode and just copy my home folder over.
    Any other suggestions?

If your display is so bad, I will assume you cannot get to system prefs to enable sharing/screen sharing etc.
Have you considered removing the HD from the MBP, putting it into an enclosure and connect it to the air via usb?
Given the state of things that is what makes sense to me.

  • Going from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

I'm debating going from a 2006 15" MacBook Pro to the new 13" MacBook Air.  (I watch a lot of tv and do some photo editing).
The screen size difference is the biggest thing that's holding me back.  Has anyone else made this transition, and have opinions?
    Thanks!

I too had an older 15" macbook pro, .....youll love the transition, forgetting all the improvements the AIR will have over your older PRO, it also has a sharper more contrasted LCD led backlit screen than your/my old Pro.
Most all agree that a sharper nicer slightly smaller screen is greeted better by users than a larger low contrast older screen.
To mention also.. fasters read / write speeds, better battery life by far than your old pro...etc etc.

  • Swapping from macbook pro to macbook air

I am wondering to how to do this, I have a 500 GB macbook pro and want to go to the macbook air, the problem is i have about 250Gb full on there so i cant do a even swap. Do most of you AIR users carry a external hd?
If i make the swap, what is the best way to move my data.
i will use time machine to back up my stuff on the 1TB, but when backing up, i cant put all of it on there so can i back up just a piece of my HD of what i want back on my machine and the other piece like my movies and such on my external i will be forced to carry around.
    Thanks,
    Mike Andrews

I started with a complete backup of my MacBook Pro (using CarbonCopyCloner) and put it away - this was in addition to my TimeMachine backup. Next I began pruning my MBP. Having lots of music, I subscribed to iTunes Match and removed all but about 4-5GB of music. I marked all the movies and TV shows I had already watched and was unlikely to rewatch. Knowing that a lot of programs install a folder in the Applications Support folder (your library and the top level library) I deleted any that were from programs I no longer use. I used the opportunity to go through my iPhoto catalog and mark pictures that were of lesser importance. I also went through my fonts, applications, and desktop pictures. Files and pictures that I marked were moved to another hard drive and deleted from my computer. Over the course of a weekend I pruned 200GB of data taking me down to about 200GB. I used the computer during the week and found a couple small problems which I fixed and I was ready to move into the new smaller but faster drive.

  • Problems migrating from MacBook Pro to MB Air

I'm migrating from a MacBook Pro to a MB Air.  Both run OS X 10.7.5.  But Migration Assistants are different versions (4.1.2.vs. 1.0.1), and the machines cannot seem to communicate via ethernet.  Must I upgrade the older machine to a newer version of Migration Assisatnt?  If so, how?  (Cannot find a link to download and software updater says I'm current.)

  • How do I move iPhoto videos from macbook pro to macbook Air?

I have my main iphoto library on the pro but want to move things to the Air.  I have been doing this through having both machines on the wireless network, sharing between them and then copying the pictures across.  For some reason this won't allow me to move the videos (taken on iphone or digital camera) across.  Any ideas on how I can easily get them across?

There is no way to share video. You'll need to export them from one Library and then import them to the other.

  • How do i transfer information from macbook pro to macbook air

Apple Genius recommended transferring the files on my macbook pro to an external drive and then to my new MacBook Air.  How do I do this? Migration Assistant doesn't seem to proide for this.

    Step 1
Make a clone of the old mac.  I could type all the steps but this article has pictures.  Read it.
    http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_make_bootable_clone_your_mac
    Step 2
Hook the clone to the new mac and fire it up.  During the setup it will ask to migrate your data, select "From Another disk" and then select your clone.  Your mac will do the rest.
Question to you, have you already started your new mac and entered your cloud stuff?
