Switching from a PC to a Mac was a horrible mistake :(

I am being far more UNproductive than I should be on a Mac. Too many problems on a Mac.
I just switched to a Mac from a PC. Lots and lots of problems. I am power user and I think I really made a horrible mistake. I have wasted so much work time this past week, I feel like suing Apple for promoting an ease-of-use product that falls on its face, wastes my time, and wastes my money. Everything from obvious software and hardware security foibles to now I have NO permissions to delete things on my computer are happening on this Macbook.
Apple -- you seem just as simple and behind-the-times as when I used you last many years ago.
My main problem now (oh, I have many...) is that my permissions are now changed on my ENTIRE Macbook. AHHHHHHHH. How do I delete something on my desktop? It now says I have no permissions to delete a txt file on my desktop. Why? How/ What the heck did I do?
I really made a horrible mistake and now I can't suggest that anyone in my company switch. We're sticking to PCs, though I will try to stay with this Mac for at least one more week before relegating it to a big plastic paperweight my techies use for testing.
This is all very very very frustrating. Very frustrating.

Ok, you guys are right. I had to go to the store because my computer was in a loop and they said I needed to find another Mac to backup my data first. As I am in Asia, there are very few Macs around (I can't think of any friends that have one and I went out on a limb in my company to buy one first).
So the guy at the Mac store was NOT able to backup everything because there were permission errors on my Mac. So I did lose some fairly important data -- about 1.8GB of it . Yes, I realize I could have reinstalled it myself, but it cost me US$30 to have him do it and I wanted to ensure he was "liable" if anything went wrong. He installed the Chinese version though because he was more familiar with it and said afterwards we could change back to English. In fact afterwards we did change back to English, but only on about 98% of the menus... when I just arrived home I realized that there was still some Chinese artifacts and so I wanted to delete them to ensure a TOTALLY clean English-language install (he also said we could not do an Archive and Install because of the permissions problems, so I too, for the second time, just reinstalled my computer at home and wiped EVERYTHING away).
Sheeeeez......
So the first software I installed after just reinstalling was Firefox, powered it up, and came to this forum... now I am downloading all the updates and growing numb over the thought of losing so much valuable data.
I really do like the design of the Mac, I like its general feel and ease of use.... but it is like grinding two ungreased gears together these past 2 weeks to get printers working at the office, to get the iSight camera light to turn off, and to realize to my horror that Mac hasn't changed so much in the last 10+ years since I last used her (or is it a him?).
This Mac borders more on a "consumer product" than a "computer", if you know what I mean... o maybe I like fidgeting with things too much?
You can tinker with MacOS X, but you must remember that once you do, you must know what you're doing. On Windows, since there's barely any permissioning system, it's easier to change things (which is also why there's so many security problems). If you also want to really tinker with MacOS X, you must also be prepared by knowing UNIX. UNIX is what MacOS X is built on (well, to be fair for the techies, yes, it's fused with a Mach kernel). So next time if you want to tinker with the system, you must be prepared. I modified how my Mac works, edited a few buttons, but I had to first back things up.

If switching from a pc to a mac do I need a new version of CS5?

If you install a Windows emulator you could use the Windows version on the Mac.  Otherwise you would have to buy a Mac version along with a Mac license thru some third party vendor because Adobe does not sell their older products.  CS5 does not qualify for a platform swap since that is only supported for the most recent version of the CS series (now CS6).
You could upgrade CS5 to CS6 which Adobe does still sell.

  • I want to switch from a PC to a Mac. HELP!!!

I wanna know what makes a Mac so much better than a PC. I wanted to switch a long time ago, but Mac's are just so **** expensive! is it worth the money? i need some advice ASAP!

Hi, I have just switched from a PC to a Mac, and am really enjoying the experience. I have always wanted a mac, and have finally been able to afford one (kinda ). It depends on what you want to do with it, if its worth the money or not, and if you are willing to spend that bit extra to try something that you may not get on with (I have not had this problem). I have had Windows 7 installed through bootcamp on my mac, as there is the occasional program that i had a licence for on windows and not for mac e.g. Cubase 5, and i couldn't warrant spending the extra money on another licence when i had one for windows , and had a mate willing to put windows on my machine. However i hardly use the windows partition on my mac, as nearly all of the programs i need are on mac anyways.
    Hope this helps, Travis.

I recently switched from a pc to the Mac and now I am unable to locate my music library in iTunes... any advice?

Your question is a little bit vague, can you be more specific? Are you trying to find your iTunes library on the PC so you can move it to the Mac? Have you already moved it to the Mac? Can you see the music in iTunes on the Mac, but want to  find the folder where iTunes puts the music files?

You probably need to move your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER from your PC to your MAC...
You can do this via an External Drive...

  • I've switched from Google to Firefox because I was so tired of Google crashed all the time. Now I have the same problem with Firefox, Bank id, file down

    Hej!
I've switched from Google to Firefox because I was so tired of Google crashed all the time. Now I have the same problem with Firefox, Bank id, file downloading, accessing Web pages, none of it works. What is the error?
    Ronnie.

When Firefox crashes, it usually records information about what was happening at that moment and displays the Mozilla Crash Reporter. Are you seeing that, or is Firefox just freezing and you're killing it?
Assuming you have crashes, you can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "[[Firefox Crashes]]" (especially the last section) for steps to get those crash report IDs, and then post some of the recent ones here.
If that's not possible, have you tried Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

  • Switched from a PC to a Mac, now iPod updater won't update!

Anyone out there had a similar problem? I switched from a Sony Vaio PC which is what I used for my iPod Mini originally until I switched to a MacBook Pro. I was able to use Senuti softare to transfer my music from the Sony iTunes via the iPod then to the MacBook Pro iTunes. However, iPod updater refuses to update the iPod because of the Windows format originally used on the iPod. Restoring the iPod will only take it back to Windows format without any songs. How do I format the iPod for Mac from here on? I will NEVER go back to Windows! Thanks for anyone that can help.
    MacBook Pro 15" 2-GHz 2 MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If you use the Mac version of the software to restore your iPod, it will be formatted for your Mac. Download the latest software for your iPod, connect it, and run the updater. Choose Restore and once it's done you should be good to go.

  • IPhone 3G: Switching from a PC to a Mac, Contacts?

Hey guys, switched from pc to mac some months back, but ive kept syncing my iphone on my PC, now i want to sync it with my mac, because im abroad and want to put some new music on it...
im just insecure with my contacts, if i sync it with my mac, whats gonna happen with all my contacts?is there gonna be any problem? i even walked in to a local mac store here to ask, he couldnt insure me that they would still be there
after the switch to mac, can i save my contacts in my adress book on my mac book?
sorry if these might seem easy quesiton, but i live off my iphone during the days and loosing the contacts would be horribly
    thanks

Before you sync your phone with the mac, make sure you've authorized the computer in itunes. Next put at least one contact in address book, it can be a fake contact, doesn't matter. Do the same thing with ical, if you have appointments you want to save. Next, connect your phone to itunes, cancel any popups that appear. Go up to file, transfer purchases made on this ipod to this computer. All of the purchased music/apps will then be transferred. Music you ripped on your own will not be transferred, you'll have to restore that from your backup. You can now sync, when the popup appears about merging contacts, click yes. You will not lose your contacts or appointments.

  • Switching from Windows Mail to either Mac Mail.app or Mac Outlook (help!)

    Hello,
My wife has been using Windows since forever but I'll be getting her a new Mac next week. I've been using Macs since the Mac Plus so I'm comfortable with her making the switch. The one main question I have is about her email.
I registered a domain for her a number of years ago (she uses POP3) and she uses that domain for her email. She currently uses the basic Windows Mail application (not Outlook). She has a large number of emails filed away into a ton of nested folders in Windows Mail.
I'm debating if I should have her use the Mac's Mail app or if I should but Outlook for Mac for her (part of the Mac Office suite). A few questions:
If I have her use the Mac's Mail app, is there a way for me to export all of her contacts and emails from Windows Mail (including the way all of her emails are organized into folders) and then import those into the Mac's Mail app? (and Contacts)
Does the Mac's Mail app support a lot of folders, nested multiple levels deep? The last time I checked (a number of years ago) it seemed like nested folders to organize downloaded emails was an afterthought at that time.
Any idea how I would go about exporting saved emails and contacts from Windows Mail and import them into either Mac Mail or Mac Outlook?
    Thanks!

Mail allows for nested folders and complex rules for automatically filing items into these folders as they're downloaded to your local computer.
Any switch in technology can be a little daunting and annoying at times, before you try transferring a lot of sensitive information let her use Mail.app for a week or so and get to know her way around and feel comfortable with the features, then make a decision on how to import old information.
Outlook for mac is a large complex and expensive piece of software, there are other mail options available in the App store if Mail doesn't cut it.
If she wants to try the new program and you don't want to disrupt your POP3 settings on that domain, try a google account.
I'm not sure how Outlook is made available, but there are many Windows emulation programs if she cannot leave some programs behind.

  • Using Dreamweaver 8 and switching from a PC to a Mac

I am currently using Dreamweaver 8 on my PC to, of course,
maintain my website. In October, I will be switching to a Mac Pro
Computer; and will be using Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Seeing that
Dreamweaver 8 also works on a Mac, will I be able to save my
Dreamweaver 8 files from my PC and then when Dreamweaver 8 is
loaded on to my new Mac will the files easily transfer over to the
    Mac OS? Thanks.
    Jeff

I recently did the same thing (PC to Macbook Pro) and
everything transferred fine for the most part. There was a bit of a
glitch with site defs, but part of that was my fault with renaming
    a folder.
I will say though, that DW8 on a Mac is not as smooth as on a
PC. That is, you won't get the unified window as you do with
Photoshop CS3 on a Mac (each panel and file windows are separate
from each other. I also experience a lot of intermittent text
screen drawing problems (hard to explain, but text selected in
design view is not the text that is actually selected, causing me
to have to select text in code view to edit it).

  • Switching from a pc to a mac (long)

m thinking of switching the computers in my family to macs from pcs but have a slew of questions and need some advice
if be switching 2 computers. computer # 1 is a pentium d 840 with 3gb ram,a 230gb internal harddrive and 2 external usb hard drives 150gb and 320 gb both using ntfs. computer #2 is a p4 3ghz with 1gb ram a 60gb internal hd and a 100gb external hd running ntfs. both computers use wireless usb keyboards and mice. i also have a hp photosmart 3310 wireless all in one printer wireless connected to my dsl router.
What Mac configurations would you recommend to replace my 2 pcs? im thinking of a macbook pro for the p4 and an iMAC for the pentium d.
if I were to switch to a mac i have to be able to do several things as follows.
    1. find a good html editor ( i currently use an old version of dreamweaver and would like something nearly as good/easy to use.
    2. be able to download microsoft publisher documents and edit them with publisher 2002 ( would i have to use boot camp or parallells to do this.
    3. if im using boot camp and im running osx if i download a file attachment like a publisher file and then reboot into windows xp will i be able to use the file i just downloaded or will i have to "cop it to the windows side"
    4. will the wireless keyboards/mice work on a mac?
    5. is there a good mac ftp program for transfering several files at once to a server.
    6. will intuit quicken for a mac read a file saved with quicken 2006 for a pc?
    7. will my ntfs drives be readable/writeable by osx?
    8. will a standard pc monitor work with a powerbook?.
Thanks in advance for any and all recommendations

I can get you started with a few answers. Feel free to search the forums for keywords, but I imagine a few people can provide most, if not all your answers.
Dreamweaver is available for Mac. There is also iWeb from Apple.
We need to know which brand of wireless mice and keyboards you are talking about. Generally, most will work but you may lose the ability to customize buttons if there isn't a compatible driver from the manufacturer. If you have real specific needs, then simple plug-and-play works with basic features of USB input devices.
There are several options for ftp software. Check versiontracker.com for ftp programs like interarchy and fetch. (Check versiontracker for other types of Mac software also, incl. HTML editors.)
You should be able to use your external USB drives on your new Macs. Apple has documentation for switchers that gives you more information about networking and drive formatting ...

I've used different pc monitors with different Macs, you can usually get an adapter.
Quicken might be a problem. I've been wanting to buy that but have heard that Quicken's software hasn't always been Mac-friendly or updated near the quality of the pc version. But with an intel iMac, that might be software you will want to use with boot camp or parallel. I think there is a Quicken forum on their site but it's been a while ago I checked. I gave up on Quicken because I also have a PDA and they just weren't fast enough with making the product worthy of spending the same amount as the pc versions for less or half-done features. You might find others who use the software who can give you more information.
I don't know much about the emulation software. I'm not there yet. However, if you have external drives and a network, I don't see why there would be a problem with downloading directly to one of those external drives for use by any other computer on your home network. I have a wired/wireless home network with Mac and pc sharing printers, internet and accessing files.
That should get you started and others will fill in the gaps.
    Good luck.
