Switching from CRT to LCD

I am a print graphic designer in need of a new monitor and ahve been given 3 days to find one. My IT folks are suggesting a Samsung SnycmasterXL24. I am concerned with switching to an LCD from a CRT. I have seen some of the other flat screens the regular staff use in here and am not impressed. I am currently using a ViewSonic G225FB 21 with Matrox Parhelia 128 video card with Pantone color calibration software. I have the speed needed to run the graphics software and get great accuracy of color between my monitor and print. Anyone else out there use this monitor? Any issues with graphics software, video cards and color accuracy? Any input is greatly appreciated. I am running Windows XP.
Thank you for your input,
Laurie

Laurie,
I used a ViewSonic G220f CRT for a number of years, and then switched to a Samsung 213T LCD when my ViewSonic went to monitor heaven.
There are some differences between a CRT and and LCD, but I found the transition to be fairly painless. The Samsung is a good monitor, but there is some light falloff when you get to the edges and the corners, more than with the CRT. Still, it is no big deal, at least to me. I do a lot of fine art printing, and my previous job was as a director of marketing, and I sent a LOT of jobs to press.
LCDs are a little less forgiving if you don't view more or less perpendicular to the screen. But, to me, that is also no big deal. A monitor hood is always a good idea, to prevent ambient lighting from reflecting off the face of the monitor.
FWIW, I found the same calibration parameters worked fine on both monitors. I chose 5200K color temp, 2.2 gamma, and a luminance of 90 cd/m2. My monitor and inkjet proofs were dead ringers, and they matched the proofs I got back from my commercial printer very closely.
The 213T is no longer in production, but the Samsung synchmaster monitors are pretty good for the price. I have also heard good things about the NEC monitors, but haven't tried them. If you have money to burn, there are Eizo, LaCie and other high end LCD monitors. I also drive my monitor with a Matrox Parhelia 128 MB card. Be sure to use the digital connection.
Probably the biggest difference, at least to me, is that sharpening looks a little different on an LCD compared to a CRT. You will just have to get used to that. There is no "Perfect" monitor to print match, so whatever monitor you use, you need to get a feel for it.
Hope some of this helps.

  • Can switching from CRT to LCD monitors cause system problems?

My 9.1 locks up periodically (but the cursor still moves) since I replaced two 20" CRT monitors with two Samsung 19" LCD monitors. Could this affect the performance of my machine? I've tried everything else to address the freeze problem but recall the issue started when I installed the LCD monitors. Anything I can do?

    Studedot,
You may have issues with the amount of video memory depending on the resolutions of the new LCD screens.
I find LCD screens go up to insane resolutions, way more than the corresponding size CRT monitor, ie. a 17in Dell LCD monitor with higher resolution than a 21in CRT.
It shouldn't cause crashes or freezes, but may cause -redraw problems when closing / moving windows in 2D and playing 3D games.

  • Remembering windows positions when switching from/to dual screen display

    Hello,
Most of the time, a second LCD screen is plugged in my Macbook and configured as the main display. When I arrange the windows, I keep iTunes or my mail application maximized on the macbook screen and use the bigger external screen for all other windows.
If I unplug the external display, all the windows are of course moved to the laptop display. When I plug again the external screen, all the windows are moved to the external display. But I would like the iTunes and mail application to remain on the laptop screen.
Is there any utility to remember the windows positions and arrange them automatically when I switch from/to single/dual-screen display?
    Regards,
    Raph

Would DisplayWatcher do what you want? I came across this a couple of weeks ago but haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

  • CRT versus LCD

Per specs, Apple's old 21" Studio Display (graphite-CRT) and their original 22" Cinema Display (M5662-LCD) have the same ppi (85), but I am struck by the difference in display clarity. Both are set at max resolution: CRT-1600x1200 and LCD-1600x1024. For one thing, text in Microsoft Word looks much sharper on the CRT than on the LCD. It seems pixelated on the LCD. Also, images, such as tiffs, look much sharper on the CRT. The same pics are noticeably grainy on the LCD. Why is this?

What you're seeing is normal. CRTs create pixels by aiming 3 guns (Red, Green, and Blue) at the back of the tube, to the same spot some distance at the front of the tube, which is coated by phosphors. Naturally, there's going to be a bit of fuzz that way. There are no pixels hard-wired into the front of the screen itself. That's why all resolution settings look equally sharp on a CRT.
LCDs do have a grid fixed into the screen, creating pixels with naturally hard edges, so they are sharp by nature. That is why only one resolution setting looks right on an LCD and all others look wrong.
Text looks sharper on an LCD because it really is.
The image probably isn't "sharper" on the CRT, it probably looks more natural since normal vision is about continuous tones. The human eye actually has to look for edges and the brain processes for them. On the LCD, the pixels are sharper, but that's not like the real world. (Every image pro knows that you can never take an image from a film or print camera and just print it - every image in every medium that look sharp was carefully sharpened by software.) Also, the LCD thin black grid around every pixel you can see if you look up close. That grid slightly disconnects each pixel and could cause the apparent graininess.
The CRT hid the low resolution of a monitor because everything fuzzed together a little bit. LCDs are brutally honest. It is 85 dpi, and on your LCD now you can see it. Remember, an 85 dpi image is unacceptably low for printing. If future screens continue to use discrete pixels, it will probably take the higher resolution displays like 150+ dpi to make images look more like print again. We are seeing higher resolutions in PC laptops and the iPhone, so it may be on the way. However, one problem is the higher pixel density you have on an LCD the more area the black line grid takes up relative to the screen.

  • Switched from Z1 to Z2

Hello, recently I switched from Z1 to Z2.
To be honest, previously I thought that the change will be rather minor only, but no.
The difference is huge! The phone is really great and shines especially in these aspects:
    - camera, and it is weird that even having the same camera sensor, pictures are really better, not to mention 4K that is great.
    - display, contrast and colors are far better, the same comes for viewing angles (however it was not an issue for me on Z1)
    - battery, it is hard to say something as I have it since yesterday and it last about 1 day (I was using it a lot with high brightness of the screen)
    - sound, sound is amazing this time, both stereo speakers and included headphones, especially headphones have a premium feeling compared to stock ones from Z1
Overall I am awesomed by Z2 and happy with it (still there are some things that should be changed like app2SD because 11,7GB available disk space is too low).
I bought a glass screen protector for it (9h), I will not mention manufacturer, but now it is not only protected, but the feeling while swyping the finger on Z2 is much better + it is a little bit oleophobic
Unfortunately noone is producing this glass for the back so I have a plastic film only on back.
And applying the glass was really easy, no bubbles at all.
I think it was worth it to switch from Z1 to Z2.

Well, camera is practically supposed to be better,it is twitched. The display is also different,LCD LED vs LCD TFT,more vivid and the colours should be pretty amazing. Also, sound from 2 speakers is something new and nice. The battery is not something crucial as it depends on what is installed on the device.
It is supposed to be better, otherwise it would not be more expensive than Z1 and it would not have different specs.

  • I am switching from a pc to mac and want to know how I go about transferring files from one to the other.  There is a chance that I will have to hand my pc back before I receive my MacBook so I will need to transfer on to some sort of external hard drive.

I am switching from an acer laptop to a MacBook Pro.  I may have to hand in my laptop before I receive my new MacBook. What is the best way to back up my files so that I can transfer them to my MacBook.  I cloud cannot be installed on my laptop because it uses a version of windows that is older and doesn't support it.  Hope someone can help.

Connect a blank powered external drive to the PC.
Right click on the Disk in the File manager and choose format: exFAT
(if it's a XP machine, first install exFAT from Microsoft and reboot)
navigate to your user account folders on the PC and drag and drop copy (or copy and paste) to the external drive.
(if a program has your files, then export them out first)
Hook up the drive to the Mac, and transfer files to the desktop or to their same appropritate folders.
Import photo's into iPhoto program, import music into iTunes etc and they will manage those files.
You can continue to use the external exFAT drive between Mac's and PC's
Do not format the drive NTFS or FAT, NTFS can't be written too by the Mac and FAT can't hold over 4GB sized files.
If you format exFAT on the Mac, it likely won't work correctly on the  PC.
"Migration" type programs are a utter waste of time and effort between PC's and Mac's for the fact that only certain files (and no programs or anything else) will work between them, also it's a hassle and takes too long. So don't even bother with it.

  • I switched from an iPhone to a Droid and can't receive texts from iPhones now, help?

I switched from my iPhone 4s to a Droid and I do not have that phone anymore. I can not recieve texts from anyone with an iPhone and can not get in contact with my girlfriend or siblings now. I think their phones are trying to send their texts as iMessages to my phone that does not recieve iMessages. How can I just delete my Apple account and recieve texts again?

Sounds like you didn't turn of iMessage on your iPhone before making the switch.  If you registered your iPhone with Apple using a support profile, try going to https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do and unregistering it.  Also, try changing the password associated with the Apple ID that you were using for iMessage.

  • I switched from an iPhone to a Galaxy s4.  Everything seems ok except text messaging with people who have an iPhone.  I can send them a text, they can see it, but I cannot see what they text back.  What can I do please?

I just switched from an iPhone to a Galaxy 4S and I like it except for text messaging.  I can text, they can see it, but I cannot see their response if they are using an iPhone.  Can you help me with this?  What do I do please?

Congratulations on your new phone kathdogg! Now let's get your messaging working correctly. If you still have your old device, turn it on, go to settings, and turn off iMessaging.
If you are no longer in possession of your old device, you will need to remove your phone number from your Apple Support Profile. This can be done here: http://bit.ly/1cst2SC
Please keep us posted, and let us know if this resolves your issue!

  • Data network errors when manually switching from 3g to 2g

    Hi everyone,
Apologies if this has been posted before but im running out of ideas! - Got my iphone 4 a couple of weeks ago and have noticed a rather irritating problem with it. For some reason, if i manually switch from 3g to 2g the data connection drops.. I get 'cannot activate cellular data network' errors and i have to toggle airplane mode on/off to reset the connection. Is this a network issue? - I live in London and am with Vodafone... Their tech support are useless as all they suggest is resetting the phone or getting it replaced. Its my third handset in 2 weeks and im getting close to calling it a day and sending the phone back to Apple. Anyone out there in a similar situation? - Advice??

    Bump
So no-one has suffered this issue? - Not even fellow vodafone uk users?

  • I have switched from PC to Mac how do i use my windows version  of adobe photoshop CS3 on my MAC?

i have switched from PC to Mac how do i use my windows version  of adobe photoshop CS3 on my MAC?

    rebel1568,
All Photoshop versions through CS6 came with platform-specific licenses, either Windows or PC.  You could get a cross-grade of platform swap at a nominal cost but not for older versions, only for whatever Photoshop versions was current at the time.
CS3 is totally out of the upgrade or cross-grade loop.  You'd have to buy a new license for CS6 Mac or subscribe to Photoshop CC, as Trevor points out.
Curt Y is correct in that CS2 will not run on current Mac-Intel machines.  You would need a used Mac G5 or G4 with a PowerPC (IBM) CPU, which have been obsolete since mid 2006.
Of course, you could run your Windows  on your Mac if you installed and ran BootCamp or Parallells.

  • I have the iPhone 4. I recently switched from PC to IMac. I am trying to sync my iPhone, but iTunes will not let me add or remove anything. Do I need to change a setting since I changed computers? Help!

I have the iPhone 4. I recently switched from PC to IMac. I am trying to sync my iPhone, but iTunes will not let me add or remove anything. Do I need to change a setting since I changed computers? I try to add songs from my music into my phone section and it will not go... Plus the playlists on my phone are not updated on my iTunes phone on my computer. Its like it never updated. What am I doing wrong??

Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.
When you sync to another it will delete the current content.
Make sure you have copied everything from your old computer to your new one first.

  • I know have a mobile me account and so my apple id is switched from my email address.  i am trying to update my apps but it won't let me as it won't recognize my new 'ID'. how can i fix this on my iphone?

I have mobile me account now and so my apple id is switched from my email address to my mobile me address.  Since I have made this change I can't update my apps. Everytime I try to sign in it won't recognize the switch. I have updated all the proper information on my iphone, however, when updating apps it still shows my apple id as my email address and not the mobile me account address. I am not sure what else to do???  I have even sync'd my iphone and tried to do it through my pc, however, it says that it can't update (nothing to update). I have ten updates sitting on my iphone apps...What to do...what to do?  Very confused.

Where are you trying to log in? You should be able to change your ID at http://appleid.apple.com - can you log in there?
Before you change your ID you should log out of the iTunes Store and on any devices which are logged into iCloud. Then once you've changed it you can log back in with the new ID. (Your iCloud synced data will disappear from the device when you do this but will reappear when you sign back in - give it time).
If you are unable to sign into http://appleid.apple.com you will need to contact Support. Go to http://iforgot.apple.com and sign in with your iCloud login. A new password will be sent to your associated email address. If this doesn't work you will have to contact Support. Go to https://getsupport.apple.com . Click' See all products and services', then 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID', then 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'. If you have any problems with that try this form: https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html
