Switching from Ethernet Internet Connection to Airport Internet Connection

When I try to switch from an Ethernet connection at work to an Airport connection at home or visa versa, 9 out of 10 times it locks up my computer and I have to restart. I did not have this problem before I upgraded to Leopard.
Any suggestions?
Lauren

Hi,
in the design center select the database modul, right mouse click, select configure and set the location to your new location.
You could change the original location if you first unregister it in the control center. Then it es editable - it's the better way to make changes on the connection entries.

Detlef

  • Just switched from Qwest DSL to CableOne cable internet and now my mac won't connect to the internet.

I've spent 2 hours on the phone with CableOne and they can't figure our why my MacPro isn't connecting to the internet through their Arris modem. I can connect to my network and see all my computers... so the ethernet port is working but the internet won't connect. I've tried Safari and Firefox browsers. My PC connects using the same ethernet cord with no problems. I've also tried connecting the computer directly to the modem with no results. And the ethernet port says it's connected and gives me an ip address. I'm out of ideas at this point. Any suggestions?

  • Plugging working internet cable into Airport disables connection

I updated MacBook Pro to 10.7.3 and Airport 7.6.1.  Now Airport utility shows I have no internet connection, no DNS and ethernet is unplugged (yellow indicator for internet and flashing yellow indicator for airport in utility).  If I plug ethernet cable into my MacBook Pro, internet works fine (internet light shows green in Airport utility, Airport light flashes yellow), but as soon as I plug the cable back into the Airport station, the internet light goes back to yellow and the Airport light continues to flash yellow.  In other words, plugging a working ethernet cable into Airport disables the connection.  I can't figure out what's going on.  Any help please!

I reinstalled combo update, unplugged airport and cable modem for an hour, reconnected both and all is well again.

  • Can't connect to internet using my airport, PPPoE connection. Any suggestions?

I am trying to use my airport express as a wireless router. My internet connection is a PPPoE one.
    Any suggestions?

Is it really? In the apple web page it says it´s a router that you could use for an apartment network, up to 10 users. That´s actually my case. It´s still an old one that I haven´t used for almost 3 years. Bought it in 2006.

  • Since switching from mobile me to icloud, have email connection problems

Ever since mobile me was eliminated and everything swiched to icloud, my imac has problems connecting to mail. Mail Connection Doctor shows it's only able to connect to icloud IMAP, but not my email IMAP, icloud SMTP or smtp.me.com:xxxxx.

what about mobile me aliases.  will they sync too?  will i have access to all my email history?
When you move from MobileMe to iCloud, your active email addresses (@me.com, @mac.com, and all your aliases) move with you, along with all of your messages, mailboxes, and rules.

  • Can't connect to Airport Express - "Connection timeout" error msg

Two weeks ago my wireless internet connection failed abruptly.  Since then I have spent time troubleshooting this problem at the Genius Bar of local Apple Store where the problem cannot be replicated with the same equipment (my Airport Express and MacBk Pro).  I have since traded out my old Airport Express for a new one and had the same problem after bringing it home and attempting a setup of the new device.  I went back to Genius Bar and setup new Airport Express only to bring it back home and have the same issue.  Both the modem and the Airport Express have been reset in previous attempts to connect wirelessly.  Equipment is as follows:
    2011 MacBook Pro, OS X10.6.8
    2011 Airport Express
Cable Modem: Motorola SURFboard, model SB5120
    ISP: Comcast
The Airport Express is hardwired to Motorola modem and there is no other network running in my apartment.
    Any suggestions?

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I have a very similar issue going on...

  • VPN connection disconnects Airport Extreme connected disk

I have had my airport extreme (11n) since it came out. Not a single issue with it until last week.
Seems since I updated the airport utility software (not the firmware), my airport attached disk disconnects when I connect to my work's VPN. This never happened before. I then installed the AEBS firmware update last night (7.3.2) - this did not help.
Anyone know if there is a setting that can be changed to fix this?
FYI - I have the latest versions of all firmware and software installed on both my puter and airport.

Airport firmware does not include a VPN server but if all you want to do is forward the ports to a VPN server on your local network you need to ensure iCloud Back to my Mac is disabled both on the router and the Mac running VPN.

  • Internet sharing from Ethernet to Airport Wi-Fi (how to turn off broadcast)

I'm using "Internet Sharing" from Preferences / Sharing / Internet Sharing, to share my connection from Ethernet to "computers using" Airport. I'm wondering if there's a way to turn off broadcasting of the wireless name.

Just found this old thread asking the same question, though the question itself was never answered within it.

Is it technically possible to turn off the SSID broadcasting when using Internet Sharing in OS X?

  • Ethernet appletalk + airport internet. can i do both?

Hi everyone. I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. here's my question. I've got an imac and an ibook and typically they run on my AirPort Extreme network in my home. Sometimes however, I've got huge files to transfer between the two machines and my AirPort connection is just too slow. What I'd like to do is to connect the two computers using an Ethernet cable. However, when I do this and then go to "Network" under my Apple System Preferences it gives me these three options:
AirPort: AirPort is connected to the network X. You are connected to the Internet via AirPort.
Built-in-Ethernet: The cable for Built-in-Ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet.
Internal Modem: Internal Modem is not set up.
In the best case scenario I'd like to retain my internet connection via my AirPort network AND connect the two computers to each other via an Ethernet cable. I suspect this can't be done however.
My next choice would be to simply do without the Internet connection while I'm doing a file transfer and just connect the two computers via the Ethernet cable. I'm not sure I can do this though.
Under "Network" in Apple System Preferences I thought I could switch AppleTalk on both computers to use Ethernet but when I go to copy the files they seem to move just as slowly as if they were moving vie AirPort... and actually, I don't really know what it's using because I'm not sure how to tell what kind of connection I'm getting between the two machines.
I know I can do the target disk thing with a FireWire cable but I'd like to avoid the whole reboot thing if I can.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

First, I suggest that you setup another location for the Ethernet connection. Then you can easily switch between Ethernet and the default AirPort. See KB 106653, Using network locations in Mac OS X.
When you connect the 2 Mac via Ethernet, there is no DHCP server. Therefore you must configure the Network preference pane on each Mac to use Ethernet and a manual IP address. It doesn't really matter which IP addresses you use as long as they are both on the same subnet. Configure one to use 192.168.1.2 and the other to use 192.168.1.3. Configure them both to use a subnet value of 255.255.255.0.

  • Losing connection to wireless internet when computer goes to sleep

I have a Macbook, with OS 10.5.6. I connect to internet via airport connected to internet via belkin router. When I close my macbook to put it to sleep i keep losing the connection to the internet. The airport is connected, its only the internet connection that is lost.the only way round this is to restart the airport or belkin router, when the connection is restored. does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Similar symptoms here. Fortunately my MBP "recovers". When I made some experiments with VPNs yesterday, I noticed, when switching the network environment, that the computer is requesting a new IP address. Maybe this will also happen when the Mac wakes up? And maybe the router doesn't respond properly? I would try to set a fixed IP and see what happens then.

  • Can an AirPort Extreme connect to a wireless router; i.e.: Verizon Jetpack?

I just dumped Comcast in favor of Verizon's Jetpack.  Can I configure my Airport to use the Verizon router, or can I connect it (at least) to my two comouters to maintain the Time Machine backups?

Check with Verizon to see if they have a Jetpack with an Ethernet port option....or an adapter that would convert the wireless from the Verizon Jetpack to an Ethernet signal, so the AirPort can connect.
An AirPort Express might be able to "join" the Verizon wireless network and provide an Ethernet signal from the AirPort Extreme.
I say "might" because I do not know if this will work. Better to use an adapter from Verizon to insure compatibility.

  • My westel modem (that I rent from my phone provider) quit working with the internet.  My airport extreme seems to be working from the dsl (phone) connection through the westel, then through the ethernet cabled to the airport extreme.  Do I need the modem?

My westel modem (that I rent from my phone provider) quit working with the internet.  My airport extreme seems to be working from the dsl (phone) connection through the westel, then through the ethernet cabled to the airport extreme.  Do I need the modem?  Is the ethernet route less efficent that going throught the internet connection?  If I don't need the westel modem; how do I make the dsl conection to the pone port in the wall?  Thanks for help on this!

Ok, so are you saying that your Internet is or isn't working?  Does it work if you plug your computer directly into your computer and bypass the router (make sure you power cycle the modem when you do this)?  If it is working this way, then a new modem isn't going to solve a problem with your Internet not working.  If it is going slow (try running a speedtest) then you need to call your phone company to have them take a look at why your Internet is slow.  If it runs fine this way and then slows back down when you go back through your router there is something else going on.  Try unplugging both the modem and the router, let the modem fully sign back in and connect to the Internet, after it gets signed in, plug your router in, and then after it boots up fully, try running the speedtest again...See if that helps any?  Sometimes it's just an IP conflict that happens when the dynamic IP that is assigned by your Internet Service Provider changes and the change doesn't flow smoothly.

  • Switched from DSL to Cable, Can't connect to the internet

After switching to cable modem (Motorola SB5120 SURFboard) from DSL, I can't connect to the internet using my airport express. Everything is green - modem and airport, and the signal on my computer looks like I have full access, but there is a scrolling message... looking for PPPoe host. I have unplugged everything and restarted per the instructions on this site, but get the same result every time. My computer connects just fine using direct connection to the modem. I saw a download for a firm ware update for the express, but don't know how to apply that, either. Any help out there?
    Thanks!

Hello mom2gr82. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings...
AirPort Express Base Station Setup (AX) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
o Power-off the Cable modem, AX, & computer(s); Wait at least 30 minutes.
o Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    Setup the AX
Connect to the AX's wireless network, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
    o Wireless Security: Not enabled
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure: Using DHCP
    o WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (checked)
o Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    Change Wireless Security
o Wireless Security: WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal
o Encryption Type: WPA and WPA2
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    o Enable Ethernet Port (checked)
    o Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    o Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
o Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)

  • How do I connect my airport Express to the internet connection of my Macbook Pro without an ethernet cable?

I would like to use my Airport Express (802.11n) to provide audio in another room for a pair of powered speakers, however the iTunes remote software for Android requires (for some dumb reason) an internet connection so I can't control iTunes
So my computer is connected to a cabelmodem via ethernet and the Express has established a network connection with the computer
How do i give the Airport internet access without an ethernet cable?

To share your Internet connection from your laptop, select 'Sharing' in 'System Preferences' and enable 'Internet Sharing'.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13855
You will need to set a WEP key. You may need to root the system do some things at the command line. I recommend against that.
Laptops don't work well as routers but it is possible.
Hook up the AirPort express to the laptop using an Ethernet cable and configure with the AirPort utility as if you are setting up a print server or base station. The Android should see the AirPort Express after that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4587
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2312443
This might work better if you used the AirPort Express as a base station instead of trying to use the laptop as a base station. Then your Android would have Internet access.

  • Can't connect to the internet with Airport OR ethernet cable

I know many other people are having problems with airport not being able to connect to the internet. I've never had any problems with my mac before, but 2 days ago, it started to act really funny. When i turned it on, my time and date were changed to Jan. 1, 2000, and I kept on getting notifications about configd and mdnsresponder wanting to connect to the internet. I did a little research and fixed that problem. Then, a few days ago, my internet was dropped from my computer completely, and I've never been able to connect via airport since.
The main problem is that even when I plug the ethernet cable into my mac, I can't connect to the internet either. It worked a few days ago, but now my computer can't even connect. It registers that the cable is in the computer, but thats' about it. The Network Diagnostics assistant tells me to restart themodem, and that hasn't been helping at all. Any helpwould be appreciated.

First Reset your Pram to see if resets you clock (the different Date caused the problems. Plus open System Preferences->Date & Time pane. In there make sure you set the current date/time and se if you can have the Mac automatically update the time from a Time Server.
