Switching from express 7.2.1 to pro 7.2.1

I recently did the switch from express to pro (both 7.2.1 mac osx 10.4.6) and am impressed by the upgrade. Most of the songs I created in express are loading up in pro, except one. The one that doesn't work loads, but always crashes when I try to save it, even if I save it as a new project or use the save a copy as command. The big difference between the song that doesn't work and the ones that do is that the one that doesn't is significantly larger than the others. It's got a ton of audio files, automation, and is fairly long.
Has anyone run into problems loading or saving express songs in pro?
Any advice on how to save this session so I can move on in Logic pro?

remove things you don't need, (see the audio window first, select unused, delete ), then save as project copying all files, inst....
You can also try it with the audio engine off. Beyond that, I think they are the same file, but express doesn't allow you to open, edit, write certain things

  • Considering v2 purchase - large library size - switch from Expression Media

I have been using iView Media Pro (now Expression Media) for years. I prefer its method of referencing files instead of absorbing them into a library like iPhoto. Plus its interface is much more complex and useful than iPhoto.
On my latest Intel machines the Expression Media interface feels very clunky and slow. I just downloaded the latest Aperture v2 trial to see the improvements over v1. In playing around I tested referencing a few image folders. The testing folders of images on my harddisk occupy about 35MB. Strangely my Aperture trial library is 90MB!!! I imagine that Aperture saves thumbnails to speed preview but does anyone know how my library could be 3x as large as files it's referencing? In theory there should be no images in the library as I added the files without importing them so it should be small. This behavior baffles me. I have dug down into the Aperture Trial Library package and found the thumbnail file is about 80MB!!! Can that be right?
    Any thoughts?

Very informati've post bberenbaum. Personally I concur and emphasize two points: Apple players are primarily limited to Itunes and Cd's. There is a HUGE range of interesting music sites that this limitation excludes. And, as far as hard dri've size/space goes. The 5gigs that my micro has is WAY more than I need to carry around a months worth of music ( I add and subtract tracks on a monthly basis to rotate in new stuff so that I dont get tired of songs) but I did not forsee needing space for podcasts. Even though they are usually small bit rate files, the one's I subscribe to, This Week In Tech, The Dawn and Drew Show, etc, are always longer than 30 minutes. I currently have about 5 podcasts loaded up, and they consume a scary amount of space.
So my personal recommendations are: Buy a player that gives you access to a wide range of music sites and get way more disc/flash space than you think you will need. I find 5gigs just right.

  • Switching from PC, what is this folder?

I am in the process of switching from a PC to my Macbook Pro so I'm not too familiar with the folders on the laptop. I have a folder on the root of the Macintosh HD called 775. It has nothing in it and I don't remember seeing it before. If I try to drag it to the trash I am asked for the admin password, like when you install software. Anyone know what on earth this is? TIA!

    npudenz,
It is perfectly normal that you are being asked for your password. In fact, this is one very good example of why you don't need to worry about security so much in OS X. Any modification of certain directories requires that you have admin authorization.
However, having "lockups" is definitely not normal, and could be an indication of disk errors. I recommend that you use Disk Utility to check the health of your startup volume. If you don't know how, just ask.
Here's another reason why you switched: Any behavior that requires you to perform a "forced shut-down" is a good indication that something is wrong. Applications can always be prone to crashing or freezing, but these behaviors do not affect any other apps or OS X. If OS X itself (or the Finder) is freezing or crashing, something is wrong.

  • Switching from Sound Forge Studio

I'm thinking of switching from Sound Forge Studio to Soundtrack Pro for recording/editing our in-house audio training programs. (We provide business development training for the computer consulting industry.)
Can you provide any insight on the pros/cons of doing so?
What kind of learning curve should I expect?
Again with just recording/editing teleseminars, our audio needs are very basic. So do you think it'll be worth it to make the switch?
    Thanks,
    Joshua Feinberg

Not really an answer but something to think about: Soundtrack Pro is not a stand alone application. I believe the only way you can purchase it now is part of the Final Cut Studio 2 package ~$1300. Unless you have need for Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Motion and so on, it is a very pricey deal.
Of course you should also understand that it runs only on Macs.
Hopefully you'll get some good answers from the regulars about the capabilities of the program.

  • Any success or regret stories about a total switch from Avid to FCP?

Any success or regret stories about a total switch from Avid to FCP?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Final Cut Studio 5.1

I'm currently working on a job in a facility that has 3 FCP systems and uses Terrablock networked storage. I was 3 months here so I saw a lot of the good and bad with this system. It's Fiber channel so quite fast but there were a lot of issues with the compability of the OS. When working it worked well. The Avid Unity systems are very solid and proven.
The biggiest issue I have with FCP in this enviroment is it's great if you keep a project on the same system but when you start moving edits around then you get into the media managment limitations of FCP. A large project with lots of media, audio, gfx of different types, lots of renders, can be a pain when moving and reconnect on a different system. In theory it should be flawless as you point back to the proper folders and drives but it rarely is. It can be done is just takes time. And the better the editor is with his/her media managment then the easier it is. Avid's media managment works much different so by nature it's a bit easier in the networked world. We'll see what FCP has at NAB to make this better.
Bottom line, FCP vs. Avid is a debate that will rage. I use and enjoy them both on an almost weekly basis so I can argue the + an - of both. They are both tools, same buttons, different places.

  • I seem to have 2 Apple IDs, one on my MacBook Pro and another on my devices.  If I switch from MobileMe to iCloud on my Mac (under the apple logo) will my devices work and sync in iCloud.  I have no idea how I go 2 IDs

Can I get rid of one  ID?  How do I do that?

    one on my MacBook Pro
That's not an Apple ID. That is your admin account which you can view in System Preferencs > Accounts or Users & Groups.
If I switch from MobileMe to iCloud on my Mac (under the apple logo) will my devices work and sync in iCloud.  I have no idea how I go 2 IDs
Just use your current Apple ID when you setup your iCloud account that you use for your devices.

  • Auto switch from tray 1 for envelopes to tray 2 for letters on HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium

Hi I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium e-All-in-One Printer - A910n My Operating System is XP Media Center.  I haven't been able to get it to switch from one tray to the other automatically. Also  it only remembers 1 type of paper at a time. I can't get it to show in Properties, Paper  available, more than one type of paper. I open device settings, Form To Tray Assignment, Printer Auto Select :Letter.     Tray 1 : Letter   Tray 2 : Letter.   Now I change Tray 1 : to Envelope #10  click apply, click ok, it closes out. I open the Properties back up & Tray 1 : is back to letter.  Is there a way to get the printer to remember the it is set up with 2 Trays with 2 different types of paper ? I think the problem lies with the Printer Auto Select : But I am not sure. I would like to be able to print an address on an envelope when working in works. Without having  to manually change the Tray settings. Does any one Know How to set this up ? Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this issue.

    Hi MrHope,
Make sure that the printer is set to have tray 2 as the default tray, and then try setting the paper types for each tray in the printer settings.

  • Switch from Quad G5 to MacBook Pro??

I use my Quad G5 for semi-pro photo work - Nikon Raw images processed in Aperture. Due to space and mobility issues, I am considering moving from the Quad G5 to a 17" MacBook Pro C2D. Along with the photo work, I use the Quad for correspondence (MS-Office suite), record keeping, and on-line research.
I use a Lacie 500GB external drive for storage, so the 160GB drive on the MBP C2D is not an issue.
I know it's early in the life of the MBP C2D - but by chance has anyone made a similar move; i.e., switching from a Quad G5 to a MBP C2D? If so, what were your observations - pro and con? My PowerBook G4 is a very nice machine, but it can't handle Aperture. I would like the mobility of the PowerBook, combined with the power of the Quad G5.
Thanks for any thoughts and observations.
    Leo
    Quad, 4.5Gb RAM; PowerBook 1.5Ghz G4, 2Gb RAM; Dual 1Ghz G4, 1.5Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Nikon D200; Nikon D200; Nikon D70s

I agree there would be a bigger performance gap between the MBP and mac pro.. but seeing as you are asking about the G5 quad, not the mac pro which is a quad xeon, the fastest new MBP actually comes off pretty well in the comparison. my MBP 17" is a new core 2 duo one, and I was surprised at how much faster it is than the dual G5 I have. I expected it to be maybe a tiny bit more capable, but it's actually well and truly faster. real time audio plug ins that I use in logic indicate a far lower CPU usage than the same thing on the dual G5.
also, earlier this year I was at an apple briefing (for audio pros) so we had a comparison station set up with a quad G5 vs the first MBP that had come out. they had the same big project running on both machines, in logic, using a lot of CPU and RAM intensive live plug ins playing an orchestral arrangement synced to a DV res H264 video file, all running off the internal drive. the quad G5 showed a little less CPU use, but only just the tiniest amount less.
anyway this is not the same as someone giving you impressions from aperture, but it was a good way of seeing that these machines are up there in performance.
honestly the biggest concern you should have is about the screens on the MBPs. lots of people are reporting that the quality is hit and miss, and I agree. it looks to me like apple have done some cost cutting and are shipping lower quality screens on these machines than in the top of the range powerbooks of the past. I knew there had to have been a tradeoff what with the laptops being so cost competitive today. the machine I just received is great, but the screen definitely has brighter areas, like the backlighting is not totally consistent across the whole display. maybe it will settle down, but if I were a user that depends on accurate colour, contrast and brightness, I'd be on the phone to apple demanding some answers and a replacement.

  • How can I upgrade to Pro From Express

    Hi,

    There is no pro-rated price.
Logic has been reduced to $199 from the app store...... mainly so Apple can sell more hardware.
Next year they will be giving it away... (kidding, hopefully)
The main content, application and support files is a 2.5 GB download, the additional content, Jampacks, Loops, is many, many more GB than that.

  • Has anyone switched from a PC notebook to a MacBook Pro?

I am a PC user who is considering switching my 1-year old Toshiba notebook to a MacBook Pro. My reasons for doing so are:
    (1) I would like to simplify the number of applications from various vendors on my computer in order to reduce software conflicts and memory "hogs" that run in the background.
    (2) I have heard that MacBooks are much more secure -- so much so that anti-virus software isn't even usually required. (However, I'm not sure what the constraints are when running a Mac on a home wireless network in conjunction with a desktop PC computer.)
    (3) My understanding is that working with photo's is much more effective with a Mac than a PC. I currently run ACDSee Pro and PhotoShop Elements, and the former has really slowed down my system.
    (4) I've been told that any type of setup -- be it new software, connecting to a network, or finding a wireless Internet connection -- is very easy and straight forward.
If anyone has experience with switching from a PC notebook to a MacBook Pro, I would appreciate hearing your opinion on doing so, both positive and negative. Alternatively, if you know of a good Web site that provides this type of information, please point me to the URL.
    Thank you!

    Hello,
I switched from a Pentium 4 2.2GHz Dell laptop to a Intel CD 2GHz MacBook Pro.
This what I found (the good):
    - the spotlight search on a mac is soo much better and faster compared to a windows search.
    - No need for all those extra programs that scan you PC for virusses, spyware, mallware,...
    - No need to download additional drivers or programs before you can do anything.
    - No third pary software that messes up the whole system. Apple software appears to be more reliable, even from third parties.
    - Backlight keyboard with shaped keys
    - You can do more with a mac trackpad than with a windows trackpad. It does not bother me when I forget the mouse on my desk. The trackpad scrolls and has a "right mouse button" as well.
    - Multitasking without systemwide slow downs.
    - I have an iPod, so iTunes is all I need/want.
What I also found (the bad):
    - the screen resolution on my Dell was higher.
    - Some apps still need Rosetta (office, photoshop,...). If pictures are your thing, iPhoto is no replacement for Adobe photoshop.
    - I sometimes miss the picure viewer thing you have in windows XP. When you select picures and open them, they open in a window with nice back/forward controls,...
The Preview app in Mac just isn't the picture viewer I hoped it would be. But maybe that's just me...
    - there is a lot more freeware for PC than for Mac. This can also be a good thing for Apple if you consider that most of these freeware things are crap anyway...
    - iChat only works with specific accounts and other iChat programs. I hoped it would be a more "universal" chat program without these limitations. To chat to windows people you need a serious work-around (jabber) or just use MSN messenger.
    - no good at games unless you have bootcamp and a windows CD.
Overall: I would not go back to windows. I really like the MacBookpro and OSX.
I have to say that I was not unsatisfied with windows, so I will not trash it. It always worked well for me and did't crash. Programs crashed, but windows did not. I believe a lot of these crashes are due too crappy third party software installed by the user at their own risk...
I'm saying this to let you know that I happely use the 2 systems, but the mac wins for me. OSX is nice to work with and nice to look at.
    Hope this helps...
    Bjorn
