Switching from G3 Powerbook to G4 iBook, need assistance!

I am switching from a G3 Powerbook to a G4 iBook.  I have need to recover ClarisWorks and MacDraw from the G3.  I read as long as I use Panther or older I can run classic and the programs will work, is this correct?  If so, is there anything I need to do other than copy the application folder(including location of it) from the old hard drive to the new hard drive?

In theory, yes.  Nothing is guaranteed to work in Classic.
Is it possible to just clone from one computer to the other via Firewire?  See Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Or you could backup to an external drive so you would then have a backup of the old installation available until you were sure the new installation was working properly.

  • Switching from Cable TV to Direct TV--need input on DirectTV

I am thinking of switching from CABLE TV to DIRECT TV..can anyone give me any advice when dealing with DirectTV..much appreciated..Thanks

I would NOT switch to Directv through Verizon..The Verizon sales rep failed to mention several key "additional" charges and when I tried to get them straightened out I got the runaround from both Verizon and Directv. This continues and has gone on for months. I have been charged $50 and higher on top of the "total" price quoted by Verizon.
Do your research on Directv well. I can no longer get most Philly sporting team games, the weather channel does not have true "local on the eights", and I have more frequent signal issues than I had with cable. There are other issues.
I looked into NFL Sunday Ticket. They want $319 for the season and there is no guarantee I will be able to see my team's games. That is outrageous. There must be a lot of subscribers with more money than they know what to do with if Directv is able to charge that kind of money.

  • Switching from G4/Powerbook to a new iMAC - need to migrate

I currently own an iMAC G4 and a Powerbook. I have ordered a brand new iMAC that is on it's way. I've read that there is a problem with just connecting the G4 to the new machine and migrating my files. I need step-by-step help with what to do. Is there a really basic tutorial out there? I use these machine for digital photography and know practically nothing regarding computers. I don't even know how to do a back-up other than one time long ago when having a problem I read how to do it and now have no idea where that information is. Basically what I want on my new machine that I have on my old one is fonts that I've downloaded online; actions/effects; printers; CD printer application; PSE6; templates. When they say there is a problem with applications working and that you need to uninstally and reinstall....I assuming they are talking about our own personal programs that we've bought and not the ones that come with the computer like iPhoto, iDVD, etc.
I hate to ask someone to go to all the trouble of writing out directions down to each individual step but maybe it would help lots of others out there and that it could be saved and shared.
I really do appreciate the help and thank you so much.

You connect the two computers using a Firewire cable. You then use Target Disk Mode to get access to the G4's disk drive in order to transfer your data by simple drag and drop. I would recommend against using Migration Assistant when moving from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac. Here's a guide to what you can safely move:

  • Moving MacWrite from old Powerbook to new iBook

I just had a new hard drive installed on my iBook G4, running OS X 10.4.11. I backed up my personal data, but figured I'd be able to reinstall all my applications since I had original software.
However, I was unable to reinstall MacWrite II for OS 9. I only have a 3-1/4 inch disk with the program, and the disk drive won't work in OS X.
I tried to network the iBook with my old Powerbook G3 running OS 9.2 but they wouldn't connect. I copied the MacWrite files onto my flash drive, and even though they looked perfectly fine when the drive was hooked up to the Powerbook, they didn't on the iBook.
The iBook's OS 9 doesn't seem to be recognizing MacWrite as an OS 9 program.
I can't figure out how I made this work when I originally bought the iBook two years ago. I really need MacWrite so I can get access to old text files. Microsoft Word doesn't have an appropriate translator.
    Help?!?

I copied the MacWrite files onto my flash drive, and even though they looked perfectly fine when the drive was hooked up to the Powerbook, they didn't on the iBook.
Could the Flash Drive still be in MS/Dos format? That'll lose half of most files. If so, just format it MacOS/HFS+.
A few other APPs had MacWrite import capabilities...
    Adobe PageMaker 6.5 here.
    Word Perfect 3
    Mac Publisher
    Quark 4
    Claris/Dataviz document converter.
    Likely many more too.
The iBook's OS 9 doesn't seem to be recognizing MacWrite as an OS 9 program.
Was this perchance copied over on that Flash Drive?

  • Looking to switch from Virgin Media to BT but need...

My new built house has an XNTE situated at the front of the house so have no ideal where the "master socket" will go.  In the house there are about 6 phone plugs each square and mirror finished.  Currently the VM router is in first floor lounge to the front (large 3 story house) and this lounge is rarely used for tv, gaming etc...Ideally I would like the BT router in my rear ground floor extention where most of the BT tv will be watched and so my PS3, Wii U get direct etherent connection to the BT hub.  Problem is if wired from the front XNTE, externally via the wall would need about 20-25 metres of cabling- not ideal is it?
I'm looking to get Bt infinity 2 with 76meg.
A compromise would be having the router same locale as the VM router on first floor lounge and have the BT vision box downstairs connected via powerline adaptors whilst also connected to the PS3, Wii U.  Currently I get half the speeds via powerline adaptor to the actual full speed when connected directly, which is 30 and 60 meg.  Would this setup give me sufficient speeds for online gaming, watching HD content via BT's broadband.
Could someone give me advice on which setup is best or if it doesn't matter(bear in mind I want the best speeds for Bt tv, Ps3) :-
-router first floor with downstairs, powerline plug connects BT Vision, PS3 and Wii U,
-router ground floor connected to BT Vision, PS3, Wii U with powerline plugs upstairs for wi-fi, pc...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The Openreach engineer may/will just bypass the xNTE and fit a new master socket. He should fit this where you want. It may be possible to turn one of your phone sockets into the new master socket. Obviously you will need to discuss the best options with the engineer.
If the modem can not be installed in the extension room and you are prepared to run Ethernet cable outside using CAT6 you will not get any drop in speed up to 100 meters so you could have your Homehub router in your ground floor extension. This would be a better option than powerline adaptors, which as you have found do loose speed.
If you have to use Powerline adaptors then make sure they are at least the 500Mbps ones and preferably 1Gbps one.

  • Switching from e series to n series need some help...

well, yes i am more of a multimedia internet guy, and switching to n series, and i have a few questions : i noticed on the n97, after i tried it for 10 minutes, that every time u click on something on the screen there is a small vibration, can that be turned of ? and does the n97 comes with nokia maps 2.0 or ovi maps 3.0 ? and will the free navigation offer from nokia be on the n97? and does the n900 have a sensor for autorotate between landscape and portrait? and on the n97, can i for example update my status on facebook using hand writing ?and can i get an office documents editor on the n97, or n97 mini ?
Reality is wrong....dreams are for real... 2pac .
don't forget to hit that green kudos

Personally, if you're looking for the best bang for buck, its the 5800 since the only diff between it and the n97's as krizanand said, is the keyboard and max storage. The n97 has 32gb internal expandable with an additional 16gb card, the mini has 8gb internal+16gb card max, the 5800 only maxes out with a 16gb card. If I were to choose, I'd wait for the n97's january/february batch with the prebuilt in v2.0 firmware in the hopes that everything is already fixed with it, as we already gave Nokia a lot of time to fix things. The qwerty keyboard is a big thing if you like to surf the net or type a lot as the extra screen space is a deal breaker. I dont have an n97 though since when I bought my 5800, the n97 wasnt released yet, and I am in no mood to change phones so soon. ^_^

  • Migrating from G4 PowerBook to i7 MBP: Use assistant?

Just received my new 17" i7 MBP and I'm planning to migrate from my old PowerBook this weekend. Would I be better off using Migration Assistant for everything, or just for some things, or not at all? I don't mind re-installing applications from scratch if that's the healthier way...

    Jo,
Using MA would be fine however I would only use it for your data files. I don't recommend using it for migrating your applications, for those you should manually install each app which also give you the opportunity to update those that need it. There are many many threads about migrating from PPC machines to Intel based machines, you may want to look though some to see if you can pick up some valuable hints.

  • IMAC Intel Core 2 Duo -- from Blue Screen to Shut Down -- Need Assistance

I have the iMac 20-inch Intel Core 2 Duo.
Was on the internet last night and the computer completely locked up, got he spinning pinwheel, waited for about 5 minutes and tried a force quit with no luck. I shut it down and then powered it back up and only got to the blue screen. Shut it down again, same problem. Let it sit for a couple of hours to see if it would fully boot but nothing. Searched a bit on the apple support site and went with the reccomendation of trying to start in safe mode, got to the grey apple screen, then it went black and shut down on its own and has done that every time since.
I have unplugged everything several times, reset the PRAM and still nothing.
I have been getting the spinning pinwheel off and on over the past few weeks but a force quit would usually clear the application. I have been experiencing problems accessing hotmail lately so I have been clearing the history and deleting cookies, this has been the only way I have been able to access hotmail. Don't know if that has anything to do with this or not.
Additionally the computer has been gradually getting slower over the past few months. Didn't really think much of it at the time.
My biggest concern is losing the data I have saved on the hard drive right now. Getting the computer to work again would be nice too as I only bought it about a year and a half ago.
Any assistance or info greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Moving from PowerBook G4 to iBook G4

I am moving from a PowerBook G4 running OS10.3.9 to an iBook G4 running OS10.5.6. I have transferred files and apps using a Firewire connector by rebooting and holding down "t" on the PowerBook and then dragging and dropping the desired files to the iBook. I had hoped that by moving my browser (Firefox), Mail, and Address Book apps from the PowerBook to the iBook and opening them on the iBook that the bookmarks, addresses, etc. would come with them. This has not been the case, and I've gotten an error msg saying that this version of Mail will not run on the OS10.5.6. Any suggestions on how I might accomplish transferring the addresses and bookmarks? Thx.

Thank you. I tried that, but the Firefox bookmarks did not transfer; neither did the playlist from iTunes. The solution was to go into each app and export the bookmarks and the playlist. Everything else worked as it should.

Do I need to change a setting since I changed computers? I try to add songs from my music into my phone section and it will not go... Plus the playlists on my phone are not updated on my iTunes phone on my computer. Its like it never updated. What am I doing wrong??

Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.
When you sync to another it will delete the current content.
Make sure you have copied everything from your old computer to your new one first.

  • I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.

I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.
I am currently using Photoshop Elements 8 on Windows 7.  After several years of use, I am self taught and adequately proficient for an amateur.  What I didn't realize (until I started researching my upcoming migration on the Internet) is that I actually use PE8 for two functions: digital asset management and digital editing.
Regarding Digital Asset Management: My research leads me to understand that PE on MAC does not provide the same level of organizational capability that I am used to having on Windows, instead providing Adobe's Bridge which does not look very robust.  Furthermore, iPhoto, which come on MAC will not support the hierarchical keyword tagging that I require to organize my library of photos. The two SW applications which I am thinking of switching to are either Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom.  Frankly, I'm thinking that it would be smoother to stay within the Apple product line.
So the remaining question is whether Aperture will support my digital editing needs. The tweaks that I do to my photos are not very complex (no, I do not want to put people's heads on other animal bodies).  But could someone who uses Aperture tell me whether It will allow me to do the following kinds of edits?:
    - If I have a photo where someone's face is too shadowed, can I lighten just that person's face, and leave the rest of the photo as-is?
    - if I have a photo where the background is cluttered (eg, 2 people in front of the Parthenon which is undergoing renovation), can I remove just the construction cranes?
    - Can it splice together several separate photos to give a panoramic?
If, once I get Aperture, I find that it cannot enable the kinds of editing that I do, I would probably get PE11 in the future. However, if people in this forum tell me that Aperture will definitely not  support the kinds of editing which I've described in the previous paragraph, I would prefer to get PE11 with my initial configuration (since someone will be helping me with my migration).
Thanks in advance for your consideration and help!

I am concerned, however,  about using a non-Apple Digital Asset Manager in OSX. I would really like to avoid integration problems. Is using PE11 to import and catalog my digital photos likely to cause conflicts?
Thanks for any insight on this
    Amy,
Not so much conflicts as maybe a little less seamless integration with Apple software and perhaps some third-party software providers in the Mac App Store where some programs build in direct access to iPhoto and Aperture libraries for getting images into those programs easily. Typically, there is a manual command to go to Finder (think Windows Explorer) to browse folders.
One caution to mention however, is that the organization you set-up in PE Organizer is unlikely to transfer over to either iPhoto or Aperture if you decide to change at some point.
The only real stumbling block that I see in your opening comment is that you want hierarchical keywording (Kirby or Léonie can go into the details on keywording limitations as I stay at one level). If you can work with the keywording schemes of either iPhoto or Aperture, then using PE for your external editor (either program supports setting an external editor) would probably be ideal since you know PE well. This is the idea with the Mac App Store version of PE (editor with no organizer).
Note - I use Photoshop CS6 (full version) with Aperture and it works really well. The only downside is that Aperture has to make either a TIFF or PSD file to send to an external editor so that the original file is protected by not sending it to the pixel editor. While TIFF or PSD files protect the integrity of the image information without degrading it, they are typically much larger file sizes on disk than either RAW or JPEG files. Therefore, your library size (iPhoto or Aperture) will balloon quite a bit if you send a lot of files to external editors.
One other possibility for an external editor would be a program called Pixelmator. It is pretty similar to early versions of Photoshop, but built for Mac. Other than the panoramics you want, it will do most pixel editing that PE can do. It is not an organizer, so it is built to go with either iPhoto or Aperture. It does have differences in how you complete certain procedures, so there is bit of a learning curve when you are used to doing it the Adobe way.

However it is possible to access some features of iClould while staying with SL. If you go to iCloud you will see the web interface for the cloud.
