I have been totally underwelmed with Leopard. sort of strikes me of the XP -> vista situation..
sow start ups mail freezing .. loss of utilities I used.. the usual two steps forward three steps back BS that I am sure they will work out after 5 or so more updates
I had already decided to keep my G5 farm on Tiger.... as well as my PB.... but the questions now arises is my intel mini-macs...
I remember that there was a beta of bootcamp that worked with tiger.. did that expire with the release of leopard>>??

Mail freezing is usually a matter of the hard drive being too full, permissions needing repair, or an outdated firmware on your router that needs updating. With third party routers because 802.11n is still draft spec, that could be a problem and sticking to 802.11g until your 802.11n router has a finalized 802.11n may be a good idea. However, if your Mac shipped with Leopard, you can't downgrade it to Tiger.
Only Macs which shipped new earlier than October 26, 2007 can be downgraded to Tiger. Macs can only run the Mac operating system they shipped with and newer up to the limits of the hardware.
The Windows operating system and Linux operating system options are endless thanks to Virtualization.
If you wish to isolate your issues in Leopard so that the freezing goes away, backup your data*:

Switch from Leopard to Tiger

I am unable to fix the administrators name and password problem (invalid no matter what I try). Do I deinstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger or do I just reinstall Tiger over Leopard? Is there a possibility of losing everything on my computer in the process? Is there also the possibility of not being able to log in once I go back to Tiger (the same problem I have with Leopard)?

The news is not good for you. The only way to get Tiger back onto your machine is to erase the drive and install Tiger, so you will lose everything on your computer.
There are also other issues to consider. How old is your iMac? The newest models won't run Tiger. Did your iMac come with Tiger pre-installed? If it came with Leopard pre-installed you are (probably) one of the unlucky ones who cannot revert to Tiger.
Do you have the original restore DVD for your iMac?
Are you running Time Machine on an external drive? You can use the external for backing up your data before installing Tiger. Just delete a few (or all) of your back ups to create space if necessary. I just moved my files, music and photos to the external. I couldn't see any point in attempting to clone the system to change the OS.
You may be able to reset your password by using the Leopard install DVD. Insert the disc and restart when prompted. Hold down the option key before the chime starts and it will boot to the options screen. One of the options is to change the admin password.
I have just done the same thing and am currently reinstalling all my apps to bring my machine back to where it was before I installed the notorious OSX 10.5 Leopard. It's very disappointing to have to go back because Leopard is a wonderful OS (without the glitches).

I believe the proper way is to use your Leopard DVD to erase the HD. I would perform a full erase (include freespace), then boot, holding down the "C" key and install Panther. However, at this point you should seriously consider Tiger. I am presuming your PowerBook is a PPC (non-Intel) OS. The commercial Tiger CDs will install on your system. I upgraded my G5 from Panther, which it came with, to Tiger when it came out. Tiger is far superior to Panther.

Address Book Issues moving from Leopard to Tiger

I've carried out a clean install of a powerbook G4, moving down from leopard to tiger because the computer was struggling to cope with leopard with the lack of memory. I'm having problems importing the address book contacts. I've played around with the applications support files, cache files and preferences with no joy. Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip, but I don't have a AddressBook-v22.abcddb file in my application support/address book folder. What I currently have is as follows.
ABPerson.skindexinverted
AddressBook.data
AddressBook.data.previous
And a folder I created called "Metadata" which has all of the contacts in .abcp format.
The top three files are recreated automatically it seems as I've deleted them a few times and after I open address book the files return.
All thoughts welcome.

Downgraded 2 Macs from Leopard to Tiger. Kernel panics on both now.

I'm prepping a couple of G4's to sell on Craigslist. I downgraded a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 from Leopard to Tiger using the original disks that shipped with the laptop. The other Mac was a dual 1.46 GHz (FW800) PowerMac G4 tower - again, from Leopard to Tiger, but using a retail copy of Tiger. Both machines were running perfectly prior to the downgrades, albeit a little slow - which is why I chose to downgrade them both to Tiger. The installations went smoothly, but now they BOTH have kernel panics within a few minutes of logging on.
I've reformatted both discs using the secure 7-pass option, have swapped out the memory, and have run Disk Utility, Disk Warrior 4, and Tech Tool Pro 5 without so much as a hiccup in an attempt to find a problem with the hardware - although actually finding hardware errors on both machines would have been extremely coincidental, if not downright creepy.
I haven't run the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode yet, but I must admit that I don't believe the problem is with the hardware - particularly since both machines were is use right up until the downgrade. I'll be taking a look at the panic logs on both machines next, but thought I'd post this just in case anybody else has had the problem (and hopefully found a solution).

Doesn't seem to be likely. On the other hand, you have reformatted and secure erased the drives, and have run powerful diagnostic tools on the directories with nothing showing up, so a software based issue seems just as unlikely.
I'll be taking a look at the panic logs on both machines next

Downgrade from Leopard to Tiger after Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update?

Can I downgrade from Leopard to Tiger after having applied the Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0? This firmware update requires OS 10.5.2 or higher to be installed. Now that it is installed can I downgrade back to Tiger (10.4.11)?
I have a MacBook Pro 17 (late 2006). It ran perfect except for the occasional ignored first key press problem that these MacBook's have. In late December I upgraded to Leopard (10.5.6) and installed the Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 that is suppose to fix the ignored first key press problem. Ever since then I have had constant keyboard & trackpad failures. When the built-in keyboard fails, thankfully I can still use an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard & mouse. I've tried everything. I've reinstalled Leopard four separate times, reset PRAM, reset SMU, repair permissions, pressure on the keyboard cable under the battery (even though I don't think this version of the MacBook has that problem). Nothing restored my internal keyboard and trackpad. During this process I tried to re-install the Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update using the original package file that I had downloaded, however I was given a message that the keyboard didn't need to be update because it already has the updated functionality and the installer package would then quit. Then I remembered that the original firmware update actually installed a Keyboard Firmware Update application in my Utilities Folder. When I ran the Firmware Update application in the Utilities Folder it instantly fixed my keyboard problem! Unfortunately the keyboard fix is not stable. It fails 2 to 3 time a week. Running the Keyboard Firmware Update application fixes the problem every single time, but this renders my MacBook useless as a portable (I have to have an external keyboard/mouse to run the Firmware application). I have, incidentally, tried all the other suggestions in the many keyboard threads in this forum (putting the computer to sleep, restarts, shut downs, PRAM & SMU resets, repairing permissions, running other applications, etc.), and nothing works except reinstalling the Keyboard Firmware Update using the application in the Utilities Folder. At this point I just want to downgrade to Tiger and go back to the way it was. I'll happily take the ignored first key press problem over a completely dead keyboard.

I was just wondering how you were able to get the macbook to accept the update? I had to take mine to apple store and get entire keyboard and trackpad replaced in my macbook. They then told me to ignore the update cause they did not have any other keyboards to replace if it happened again.

Importing iCal from Leopard to Tiger

I've set up my sister's new Mac running Leopard, showed her iCal, configured it with Calendars and Events. Then I exported it as an .ics file. Sent myself a copy and tried to import her set of scheduled Events into my copy of iCal, running under Tiger. (Haven't upgraded my machine yet.)
However nothing imports. I created the identical Calendars as she has. Still nothing.
I may be under a misapprehension, dunno. I've been assuming when doing an Export then ALL the calendars are exported. She has several.
Or does iCal Leopard not support iCal Tiger? If so, that would be startling.

I am not sure, but if your attempt used iCal>File>Export.../Import... and that did not work, I have my doubts that using iCal>File>Back up iCal.../Restore iCal will work from Leopard to Tiger.

Two small issues switching from Leopard to Snow Leopard

Hi,
I just recently switched to Snow Leopard from Leopard. I was considering Lion, but heard some bad things about it.
Either way, I noticed two small issues. The first was a hot key set on my Logitech mouse. I had a button preset to all windows expose. In the software
for the mouse driver you can set it to expose specifically. (Its not just setting it to a certain F key). For some reason this doesn't work anymore.
The other problem is when I link my mac book pro to an external monitor thru an hdmi cable, I notice on the tv screen it reverts back to the default
desktop background. Instead of having the picture I set, it shows up on the big screen the blue and purple space image.
Any suggestions?

The Logitech mouse driver said there were no updates available so I figured the expose had something to do
with the new OS system since it now said expose and spaces, which Leopard never had spaces.
So what I did was figured out how to just set it up with the F keystroke and it worked!
When I link my Mac Book Pro to my tv, I use an external keyboard which is more up to date with the quick f keys up top and the arrangement is set up differently [ such as the volume keys are now f 10 and 11 instead of f 3 and 4 or something like that] Hopefully when my mbp is linked to this the keystroke I have set for expose still works. I believe it will.
And as for the desktop bg, after unplugging my tv I notcied it still stayed on the space theme. So I believe I know what may be the issue. I set that bg off of a picture on an external hd, and never saved the image on my computer hd. So I'm assuming it saved the desktop picture in some cache thing or something and once it got linked to an external monitor it got refreshed.
I now how that image on my computer and set, so hopefully the next time I link my computer to the tv, it'll stay.

Long story short, I'm an idiot, and wasn't thinking while doing this.
Installed Leopard, decided that it wasn't compatible with some film software I use for school, and didn't like the look and feel of it, so put in my Tiger install disks to do what I thought was a simple reinstall. Guess not.
BUT!...
I still have all my applications listed under "apps", but I'm in a new profile that Tiger install made me set up. I can't connect to the internet for some reason (with our protected network, even though I know the key). And I have a "Previous Systems" folder on my Mac HD drive, that has all my old stuff, including my old profile, with all my old files (music/movies/photos/etc).
My question, how do I get that back to being my current profile? And is Leopard still installed on my drive? I think it might still be because I lost 15GB space somewhere....

You probably did an Archive and Install and the Previous System Folder has you Leopard stuff.
It could be that if you installed Leopard over Tiger as an Archive and Install, that the Previous System folder contains your old Tiger stuff and maybe your recent Leopard stuff.

You need to run the disk utility and repair the disk, if necessary and repair permissions.
That's a starter. You still may have other issues because the Tiger accounts are probably different from those of the Leopard system.

Import OSX mailbox from leopard to tiger

i am trying to import a mailbox from Mail in 10.5.8 to Mail in 10.4.11 but either i am choosing the wrong folder to import or the files are not backwards compatible?
I have tried choosing user library/Mail/POP(email address) which contains an INBOX.mbox and the associated deleted/junk/etc folders but i just get a "no valid Mail for OSX files found" message
i get the same message trying to import an archived INBOX.mbox folder
is there a way to do this, aside from upgrading to Leopard
the Tiger machine is a G5 iMac running Mail v2.1.3 and the Leopard is an Intel imac running Mail v3.6

Restore Library - Reverting from Leopard to Tiger.

Hi Everyone -
I needed to install an old version of Avid Xpress that only runs on 10.4.6. I backed up my Aperture vault on redundant hard drives and did an erase and install from Leopard. Now I am back to Tiger and my avid software is working fine. I was able to install aperture okay, but it will not allow me to restore my vault because it is from a newer version of OS X.
I need to access my photos, but can't upgrade to anything past 10.4.6, as my Avid software will not work.
Are there any solutions you know of that may allow me to somehow access my aperture library without leaving 10.4.6?

one solution would be to create a partitioned environment where you have 10.4.6 installed on one partition and 10.5.x on the other, the boot into the area required. You could even install the OS on a firewire drive. Bit of a pain but if there is no way(?) of opening your library in 10.4.6...
This also allows you to operate applications that require the latest version of Mac OS.

I would like to return to my own work and forget system bugs and fixes. So I can install Tiger but I don't know if it will accept to migrate Applications, Settings and Users from Leopard 10.5.2. Does someone know if it is possible? Or, as I suspect, it will reject the migration from an upper version...

That your issues are not yet resolved. I would say this. Since you have a Mac Pro, just for sake of argument let's find out if you really do have a hardware issue. There is no data loss you'll get from doing this experiment. Just get the cheapest SATA hard drive you can find and install it in your Mac Pro. Format it with Disk Utility from the Leopard installer which is compatible with your Mac Pro (if your Mac Pro came out after October 26, 2007 use the original installer disc which shipped with it, otherwise use the black retail installer disc which looks like *).
Install Leopard on the second internal hard drive, and connect only Apple keyboard and mouse, and any display you choose. See if the issues that have been problematic happen with your machine with no other software or hardware installed. If they do, you have a hardware issue, which most likely is due to the RAM installed if the hardware test that shipped with your machine is showing no errors. See my FAQ* on why this may happen even on RAM that already was working successfully:

Basically, once RAM starts failing, no operating system update or downgrade will work until you replace it or at bare minimum see if reseating works. If though you have no problems, see if you can follow my directions to upgrade to 10.5.2*:

If you still have no errors, use the Migration Assistant to import just your documents from the other hard drive. And then install additional software from the installation CDs. It says that data corruption has affected your original drive. And don't use any system utilities not made by Apple on your machine without first checking with a technician. Cache cleaning utilities are especially dangerous.

Migration from Leopard to Tiger

I wish to migrate all data, settings and application from my imac running Leopard to my powerbook running Tiger. The migration assistant doesn't seem to work: setting my imac to a firewire drive using 'T' at startup and running the assistant on my powerbook, although I can see the firewire drive in Finder on the power book, migration assistant cant see it. Is there something i'm doing wrong

I'm running Office '04 and have these in my own library preferences folder:

com.microsoft.autoupdate.plist
Then there's a folder Microsoft User Data in my Documents folder.
That's the problem. MS tends to scatter files all over the place. I suggest you use EasyFind and/or Spotlight to search for Microsoft on your computer.
Many of your settings will be in plist files in your user preferences folder. My main worry would be if there was something specifically structured for Leopard, your Tiger account might choke on it. I'd at least make an extra administrator account on your computer so you could repair things from there if you introduce a file seen as corrupted by Tiger. Of course make a backup of your computer too.

MacBook downgrade from Leopard to Tiger.

I purchased a MacBook this month with Leopard installed. Leopard was causing some problems so I cloned it from another MacBook running Tiger 10.4.11. Since then the MacBook freezes when it sleeps. I have to press the power button to restart. When it does sleep only the hard drive sleeps the display remains lit.iMovie askd for aquartz Extrems and tells me I do not have a proper graphics card. It works fine in Leopard. There is only one display resolution - 1280 x 800. Should the MacBook be able to run properly in Tiger. Any suggestions will be well appreciated.

Having been with the Mac since late System 6, I've found that I've had to upgrade a couple programs with each OS version and had to update quite a few more - particularly hard hit are scanner and printer drivers and utilities that operate(d) at a low level. Pre-OS X, extensions tended to require upgrades when the OS version changed. I've not seen all that big a difference since the switch to OS X.
The switch to Intel has entered into the mix with a large number of companies making Intel native applications available only through upgrades which probably makes it feel that recently we've been forced to upgrade more software. And Apple has made some big changes to printer technology which broke quite a few printer drivers. As to iLife - I started this year at work running G4 iMacs at my desktop. The iLife version was whatever shipped with Jaguar (except for iTunes) but I was running TIger with no issues. And while I'm running Leopard on my MacBook I still haven't installed the new iLife on it - just haven't gotten around to it. iMovie and iPhoto are just fine - never use iDVD so I can't speak to that.

What is the BEST way to upgrade from Leopard to Tiger?

My current set-up is noted below. The main "Macintosh HD" is 250 GB's in size and is fairly filled up with programs and plug-ins. (I own Logic Studio 8 and Final Cut Pro Studio 2, as well as Adobe's CS4 Web Premium Suite.)
Prior to doing the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, I wish to ensure that I get back to my current set-up should any problems arise. Off hand, I can think of a couple of options to chose from to ensure a proper backup :
1) Cloning the current disk drive on another drive in the Mac Pro prior to the upgrade.
2) Purchasing a new, larger disk drive for the Leopard upgrade and safely storing the original drive containing Tiger.
Maybe there are more ways to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard with a dependable "back-up"??
No matter how I ensure a back-up of my current drive, I will install Leopard as a clean install.
What would be the BEST way to do the upgrade with proper back-up?

I suggest the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
