Switching from Virgin Media to BT

Hello
I've been a BT landline customer for over 20 years but my internet providor has always been NTL and then Virgin through cable. I would have chose ADSL but for years when performing speed checks I was only able to reach 4-8MB, apparently due to poor telephone lines. I think BT said I would have to pay if I wanted new lines put in but I cannot remember.
I would like to switch from my 50MB (recently upgraded to 100MB) to BT Infinity2. When entering my phone number it says I can get 48.8MB. I would like to know more information about this.
1. Would BT install a fibre line for me without charge? Would/could they use the existing cable line in my house by NTL/Virgin?
2. I already have a landline tariff but when selecting a package for broadband it says I must pay an addition 12.50 for a telephone line.
3. If Infinity2 is not using telephone lines why would one need to buy a telephone line/pay for line rental anyway?
4. I am utterly annoyed with Virgin Media forcing us to use their Superhub routers - the coaxial cable plugs straight into the router and the routers firmware is appalling. I would prefer, although not necessary, to use my own router. Would this be possible? If so, what type of router would I be looking for? For virgin, it was a "cable modem router".
5. If BT install their own lines, would they still need the 'MAC address' from virgin? I saw this written in the "switching to" articles and I first assumed this meant that it was possible but to use existing virgin media lines for BT, until I realised that MAC addresses are needed to switch between providors on ADSL lines
6. What type of support does BT provide for its infinity2 customers? Are the call centres in the UK? Is the support line a chargable call?
7. I'm wondering out of curiousity, can consumers on infinity2 get rDNS or buy additional IP addresses?
Apologies for the mundane questions and many thanks in advance.

I would like to switch from my 50MB (recently upgraded to 100MB) to BT Infinity. When entering my phone number it says I can get 48.8MB. I would like to know more information about this. ***The actual speed that you get with Infinity is dependant on a number of issues including distance to you local cabinet and line quality. The BT estimate is usually quite conservative***
1. Would BT install a fibre line for me without charge? Would/could they use the existing cable line in my house by NTL/Virgin? ***The NTL/Virgin coax cable would not be used, it would use the existing BT line that you've mentioned***
2. I already have a landline tariff but when selecting a package for broadband it says I must pay an addition 12.50 for a telephone line. ***If you've already got a BT line that you pay for then you should only be paying the rental once***
3. If Infinity2 is not using telephone lines why would one need to buy a telephone line/pay for line rental anyway? ***For BT Infinity a BT phone line is a mandatory part of the product offering***
***You can use any standard cable router that supports PPPoE, but BT do supply a wireless router called the Home Hub 3 which is fine for most people if perhaps not the most feature rich of devices***
5. If BT install their own lines, would they still need the 'MAC address' from virgin? I saw this written in the "switching to" articles and I first assumed this meant that it was possible but to use existing virgin media lines for BT, until I realised that MAC addresses are needed to switch between providers on ADSL lines ***I see no need for a MAC in your scenario**
6. What type of support does BT provide for its infinity2 customers? Are the call centres in the UK? Is the support line a chargeable call? ***BT use overseas call centres, which I would have to say are the weakest part of the offering***
7. I'm wondering out of curiosity, can consumers on infinity2 get rDNS or buy additional IP addresses?
***There is no static IP Address offering for infinity, but Dynamic DNS does work fine***
Apologies for the mundane questions and many thanks in advance.
See answers in line, and bear in mind the following...
There are two possible technology types for Infinity- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) & Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and it looks like your area uses the latter.  in this case you are still using the existing BT copper telephone cable to your house, but new larger green cabinets will have been installed locally which your phone line will be connected to. These cabinets are then connected back to the exchange using fibre optic cable the fact that the distance to the cabinet is much shorter than the exchange means that much high speeds can be obtained in conjunction with the fact that the technology is VDSL rather than ADSL

  • Switching from Virgin Media..

Hey, I'm switching from Virgin Media very soon because of their dreadful customer service and looking around BT Infinity is in my area so i thought why not. But the reason why im posting is that I've been on NTL/Virgin Media for about 8 Years, but before that i had a BT phoneline.
When i got in contact with somoneone at a BT Call centre they said I would have to pay a £130 fee to change my line BACK to BT, i told them i used to be a BT customer but they said I still have to pay the full amount. Seeing as I've been a BT customer in the past, does that make my line still BT? I really dont want to have to fork out £130 at this time of the year.
TL;DR - Been a former BT customer but currently on Virgin Media, switching back to BT for Infinity Broadband and not sure if i have to pay the BT Line installation fee.
    Thanks alot in advance

have you contacted the sales team, to find out if they can do you a special offer?
you will be safe and secure with Bt's call centre, as it is in India, and their dedicated staff are not permitted to deviate from their scripted diagnoses, so although slow, they will get to solve any  problem when it arises.
welcome to the world of last wednesday week.
there's now't wrong with 2 cans and a piece of string. at certain times, it is often faster.

  • Looking to switch from Virgin Media to BT but need...

My new built house has an XNTE situated at the front of the house so have no ideal where the "master socket" will go.  In the house there are about 6 phone plugs each square and mirror finished.  Currently the VM router is in first floor lounge to the front (large 3 story house) and this lounge is rarely used for tv, gaming etc...Ideally I would like the BT router in my rear ground floor extention where most of the BT tv will be watched and so my PS3, Wii U get direct etherent connection to the BT hub.  Problem is if wired from the front XNTE, externally via the wall would need about 20-25 metres of cabling- not ideal is it?
I'm looking to get Bt infinity 2 with 76meg.
A compromise would be having the router same locale as the VM router on first floor lounge and have the BT vision box downstairs connected via powerline adaptors whilst also connected to the PS3, Wii U.  Currently I get half the speeds via powerline adaptor to the actual full speed when connected directly, which is 30 and 60 meg.  Would this setup give me sufficient speeds for online gaming, watching HD content via BT's broadband.
Could someone give me advice on which setup is best or if it doesn't matter(bear in mind I want the best speeds for Bt tv, Ps3) :-
-router first floor with downstairs, powerline plug connects BT Vision, PS3 and Wii U,
-router ground floor connected to BT Vision, PS3, Wii U with powerline plugs upstairs for wi-fi, pc...
    Solved!

The Openreach engineer may/will just bypass the xNTE and fit a new master socket. He should fit this where you want. It may be possible to turn one of your phone sockets into the new master socket. Obviously you will need to discuss the best options with the engineer.
If the modem can not be installed in the extension room and you are prepared to run Ethernet cable outside using CAT6 you will not get any drop in speed up to 100 meters so you could have your Homehub router in your ground floor extension. This would be a better option than powerline adaptors, which as you have found do loose speed.
If you have to use Powerline adaptors then make sure they are at least the 500Mbps ones and preferably 1Gbps one.

  • How do I go about porting number from Virgin Media...

    Hello,
Have placed an order with BT for Broadband and Calls and was allocated a new telephone number. I would now however like to port my telephone number over from Virgin Media to BT to save fiddling about giving everyone a new number for the second time in the space of 6 months.
So how do I port my number from VM to BT and how long does it take?
    Thanks

Still have the vm phone account...
What a mess bt have made though, title is wrong, name spelt wrong, orders duplicated and some cancelled and to be honest I dont hold many hopes about my phone service been active tommorow.
I think it may be best to cancel all orders that BT have listed and start again, we've had this problem before- when BT edit orders and they fail on the day of activation as someone made a **bleep** up.
I'll phone up and sort it all out now...

  • Transfered to BT Infinity from virgin media

So I decided to transfer back to BT from virgin media after 2 years. The virgin broadband had become very slow during peak hours and wanted to see if BT was any better, which it has been so far. I used the BT website to initiate the transfer then a couple of days before the transfer I called up virgin to confirm that my broadband and phone services would be cancelled.
All well and good, transfer went through smoothly and I cancelled my direct debit at the end of the month.
Only problem is that virgin did not cancel my broadband and claim that I only called to cancel my virgin phone line, and they have been charging me for services that I have not used for the last 2 months. When I explained that even without me contacting them they should have transferred my services to BT, they claimed that BT can only transfer phone lines not broadband! They also claimed that I need to give 1 months notice to cancel broadband, which I have done so now, so they expect me to pay for 3 months of unused and unwanted service!
I asked them to contact BT directly and they refused.
I called BT and they claimed that there is no way they could have installed new broadband without issuing a request to transfer an existing installation, they claimed that there is no way for them to show me proof of this transfer request and again they refused to contact virgin to resolve this issue.
I dont want to pay for services that I did not use or want and I dont know who is culpable for this mess. Any suggestions?
Also I asked virgin if they had a recording of this phone conversation where I supposedly only asked for the phone line to be cancelled, I was told that I would have to send a snail mail letter to virgin to receive this info, which I may have to do if I can find any other way to resolve this issue.

You can't transfer cable broadband to BT.  You have to cancel the cable and have a new connection for the BT broadband.
BT did not need to transfer an existing installation because there was no existing installation using their infrastructure.  A transfer would only apply to a connection via the BT phone line.
It sounds like all you have done is transfer the phone number to BT.
You need to take this up with Virgin, for some reason they did not cancel your broadband account with themselves.

  • CSS Designer keeps switching from the media query I want to edit to Global

CSS Designer keeps switching from the media query I want to edit to Global. How can I keep it in the same editing mode so that I'm not all of a sudden making global changes instead of confined to the particular media query?

I feel your pain.  I see that using styles apply to the entire paragraph.
So I have a kluge until some really bright minds step in.
Open the Pages document that you need to edit.
Have in memory a single word that is in (red) in your desired font style.
Just type a word in (red), make your font color adjustments. Copy the (red) word into memory. Delete from the document.  I put this in parantheses.
Paste the (red) word where you want to make an edit
    Sample
I have to edit papers that require me to type red words into each sentence, sometimes several times per sentence.
Every time I write a word in red, the next time I click into the sentence (or anywhere else on the document), the color defaults back to black.
So let's say you want three edits.  I am showing all three, but you'd just do it as you encounter things that need correcting.
    Sample
I have to edit papers that require me to type red words into each sentence, sometimes several times per sentence (red).
Every time I write (red) a word in red, the next time I click (red) into the sentence (or anywhere else on the document), the color defaults (red)back to black.
Type directly into the (red) or double click on red and make your edit(s) one at a time.
    Result
    Sample
I have to edit papers that require me to type red words into each sentence (only those that needs correcting), sometimes several times per sentence (that sounds painful).
Every time I write (you mean type, not write) a word in red, the next time I click (with the mouse) into the sentence (or anywhere else on the document), the color defaults (reverts) back to black.

  • From Virgin Media to BT Infinity?

Hello. Im thinking of leaving Virgin Media and switchover to BT Infinity.
Im wondering what are the total costs - I want BT Infinity broadband with unlimited usage.
I got 2 sockets in my house, not sure if it belongs to BT or not as it doesnt say anything on the sockets.
My postcode is N17 0QD if it helps.

    Hi Arkash
In THIS POST I gave my situation..... which I arranged by phoning BT. However check to see any offers (eg 3 months free etc) are still available thru a telephone order or are they just for online orders.
I POSTED HERE some info about the Unlimited usage and products.
Just to give you an idea.-
I recommend speaking direct to BT.
I was on the BT Broadband option 1 for £16 pm. This also gave me anytime UK landline calls.
However when Infinity became available the BT sales phone calls could only offer me the full £28 Infinity with anytime calls.
This also was only available if I tried to order online.
    I wrote HERE .-
On the 4th July BT phoned me.... Only offered me the Infinity package with Unlimited and Anytime calls.
This was also the only package available to me if I ordered thru the BT Infinity checker website.
On the 7th July I phoned sales and ordered the Infinity option 1 with 40GB cap and Weekend calls.
And added an uplift for Anytime UK landline calls.
So on BT broadband I had.-
1.5Mb broadband with 10Gb download cap per month. Anytime UK landline calls.
For £16 + £13.90 line rental. Total £29.90 per month.
    And with Infinity I have.-
37Mb broadband with 40Gb download cap per month. Anytime UK landline calls.
    For £18 + £4.75 + £13.90 Line rental. Total £36.65.
I'm actually paying £35.35p per month with the paperless billing discount.
Approximately an increase from £30 per month to £36 per month.
Therefore for roughly an extra £1.50 per week I get Infinitely faster broadband...lol with an additional 30GB download allowance.
I felt that was worth it, and am very pleased..... so far.
Like you I wasn't happy with the packages that looked available online for me to move to.
So I rang Bt and found very helpful people who gave me what I wanted.
If I find I want the unlimited download then I can change up (this comes with anytime calls).... so with 30 days notice I can cancell the £4.75 anytime calls uplift I am paying at the moment.
Please Click On any Text in Blue as that automatically links to information.

  • Porting number from Virgin Media to BT - how to do...

I am looking at moving from Virgin as my bill is currently too expensive, I have seen one of BT phone/ infinity and TV deals which are much cheaper, the only thing I am concerned about is if I can move/port my number from Virgin?. I have not yet cancelled my Virgin contract and not signed up to BT yet.
    Thanks

Way better where I live ( NE London) Was on Virgin 60 - lucky to get 5- 10Mbps evenings and weekends. getting solid 74.9 since I joined BT.
No regrets and cheaper! See below; before April 4th is Virgin, after is BT

  • Switching from Virgin email to BT Yahoo email acco...

We have recently switched over to BT Total Vision - but we are still paying Virgin broadband subscription too. I use the Internet all day for my business using a Virgin email account but now I obviously need to switch to a BT Yahoo email.
My husband's name is on the bill and he has registered his own BT Yahoo account but can't find out how to add an email account for me. Does anyone know how I can add my email address ?
We have received some info from BT on True Switch about transferring emails - which seems to cost £19.95 but I daren't close down the virgin account until I've sorted out the emails.
I already have my own Yahoo email, just to complicate things.

your husband needs to sign in to his bt account and then manage account and then set up sub account.  you will then get a btinternet.com address and your own password

  • Port number from Virgin Media Line to BT?

    Hey all
I have two lines in my house, a virgin line and a bt line. Is is possible to transfer the number from the virgin line to the BT line without risk losing it? Its my main number and I have had for 25 years, but I only need one line in the house and I would prefer that to be the BT line as I have infinity on it.
    Cheers!

  • Switching from Virgin

I am very tempted to switch to BT Broadband but the one thing which has prevented me is having to change my @virgin.net email addresses. I have been informed by BT sales that it is possible to switch to BT Broadband and retain my @virgin.net email addresses. I have done some searching but can find nothing to confirm this. My question is two-fold:
    1. Can I switch to BT Broadband and retain my @virgin.net email addresses?
    2. If I can switch and retain my @virgin.net email addresses, how do I access my webmail?
Any informed advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Switching from Virgin to BT. Never had a BT phone ...

Hi, I was just wondering what is involved in the switch over. We have phone sockets in the house, but as far as we know they have always been NTL/Virgin. We are worried that new wires would have to be run into the house, or is this all done on the outside?

you will need new external wiring and Openreach will fit a new master socket inside near were the wiring enters the house

  • Switching from Virgin to BT

i have recently got infinity availiblity in my area, confirmed by a big sticker on the green box down the street.
I plan on upgrading to BT as i feel virgin simply do not offer what BT does.
So i rang BT and they said i need a MAC, i ring Virgin and they say it should come within 5 days (rang them on Saturday)
ive been reading online and people say that i shouldn't trust BT to completely switch me over, because the guy on the phone said once i have the mac code they'll take care of the rest. They say i should ring up Virgin and tell them im leaving them and confirm all that stuff before i call BT to switch as many people keep getting charged.
So how should i go about transferring once this MAC code arrives? and how long does the BT engineer take? the first guy said 11 days and the second said 3 weeks?.

two months of no internet is unnaceptable, i would curl up and die. Not to mention i would probably take a open reach engineer hostage and make him install it. JK JK JK
Oh and should i not bother with that  £50 sainsburies voucher? i hear its simply a scam and you probably wont end up getting the code.

  • Considering v2 purchase - large library size - switch from Expression Media

I have been using iView Media Pro (now Expression Media) for years. I prefer its method of referencing files instead of absorbing them into a library like iPhoto. Plus its interface is much more complex and useful than iPhoto.
On my latest Intel machines the Expression Media interface feels very clunky and slow. I just downloaded the latest Aperture v2 trial to see the improvements over v1. In playing around I tested referencing a few image folders. The testing folders of images on my harddisk occupy about 35MB. Strangely my Aperture trial library is 90MB!!! I imagine that Aperture saves thumbnails to speed preview but does anyone know how my library could be 3x as large as files it's referencing? In theory there should be no images in the library as I added the files without importing them so it should be small. This behavior baffles me. I have dug down into the Aperture Trial Library package and found the thumbnail file is about 80MB!!! Can that be right?
    Any thoughts?

Very informati've post bberenbaum. Personally I concur and emphasize two points: Apple players are primarily limited to Itunes and Cd's. There is a HUGE range of interesting music sites that this limitation excludes. And, as far as hard dri've size/space goes. The 5gigs that my micro has is WAY more than I need to carry around a months worth of music ( I add and subtract tracks on a monthly basis to rotate in new stuff so that I dont get tired of songs) but I did not forsee needing space for podcasts. Even though they are usually small bit rate files, the one's I subscribe to, This Week In Tech, The Dawn and Drew Show, etc, are always longer than 30 minutes. I currently have about 5 podcasts loaded up, and they consume a scary amount of space.
So my personal recommendations are: Buy a player that gives you access to a wide range of music sites and get way more disc/flash space than you think you will need. I find 5gigs just right.
