Switching fron AVID to FCP. Media Drives?

Making the switch. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to the latest drives, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am currently using two internal ATA 250 GB drives. One for media and one for the system drive. I would like to add more space. I am currently editing DV but you never know about the future. Do I go with SATA drives, Firewire, or SCSI? I do know that I want the drives rack mounted. Looking forward to the switch to FCP. I like my AVID but I feel the future looks brighter with Final Cut. I am new to this forum, so any help would be wonderful. Regards, Thomas

That G5 has two internal SATA drives, not ATA drives which are plenty quick for DV all the way to DVCPROHD100.
I suggest a PCI SATA controller card with external connectors to a two or four drive SATA enclosure.

  • Any success or regret stories about a total switch from Avid to FCP?

Any success or regret stories about a total switch from Avid to FCP?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Final Cut Studio 5.1

I'm currently working on a job in a facility that has 3 FCP systems and uses Terrablock networked storage. I was 3 months here so I saw a lot of the good and bad with this system. It's Fiber channel so quite fast but there were a lot of issues with the compability of the OS. When working it worked well. The Avid Unity systems are very solid and proven.
The biggiest issue I have with FCP in this enviroment is it's great if you keep a project on the same system but when you start moving edits around then you get into the media managment limitations of FCP. A large project with lots of media, audio, gfx of different types, lots of renders, can be a pain when moving and reconnect on a different system. In theory it should be flawless as you point back to the proper folders and drives but it rarely is. It can be done is just takes time. And the better the editor is with his/her media managment then the easier it is. Avid's media managment works much different so by nature it's a bit easier in the networked world. We'll see what FCP has at NAB to make this better.
Bottom line, FCP vs. Avid is a debate that will rage. I use and enjoy them both on an almost weekly basis so I can argue the + an - of both. They are both tools, same buttons, different places.

  • Maybe making the switch from AVID to FCP, would like some input please.

Happy T-Day to all. Would really appreciate any thoughts on this. I have many questions and need some answers from folks who are not always pushing AVID ( my vendor) I am a one man shop and use all Apple apps (LiveType, Motion, etc.) but have always stayed in my comfort zone with AVID Xpro and MOJO. Am thinking of going to Media Composer but after a few days of consideration and a trip to an Apple store, I may do a complete turn around and commot to FCP. Recently made the move to HD with the Sony XDCAM HD system. Here are my questions...plese be patient, this is a major move for me.
    1. If I purchase a new Intel G-5, will the internal SATA drives be OK for 35MPS HD?
    2. What AJA card or product should I buy so I can view HD SDI on a client monitor and output HD to a Sony XDCAM HD F-70 Deck?
    3. What graphics card should I order on the new machine?
    4. Can I use the FAM ( File Access Mode) to tranfer content?
    5. Any other considerations when ordering the new Intel machine?
I know I have many questions, but I really believe it is time for me to make the move. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks again.

    1. Yes, but just. You'd only get 1 stream. Faster drives would allow you to do more than one layer of real time playback. You could stripe more than one internal sata and get the job done that way.
    2. Kona LHe will do this, however you'd gain the ability to upconvert and cross convert the video to just about any format with the Kona 3.
3.The X1900. Motion and some effects in FCP will take advantage of it... down the line FCP is likely to rely more on the GPU is an educated guess of mine. the top of the line card is faster, but not enough to substaniate the price if you're working in Video. If you were working in 3D CAD environments, then the top of the liner would be the best choice.
4.I don't use XDCAM here, so I'm presuming that you're talking about a transfer mode with that. I'm pretty sure FCP 5.1.2 added this capability. Might search the COW on this term in the FCP forum there. http://www.creativecow..net.
5.Working with HD and MPEG streams would leave me wanting the fastest of the three machines. You'll want 4 gigs of RAM, but it's less expensive from other than Apple. I know just how scary it can be to move to a new platform, and did exactly as you are contemplating when FCP 2 arrived. I've never looked back. Hang here once you get started, and we'll help you with the transition. There is a book out there in the pro training series from Apple/Peachpit on ediiting on FCP if you're coming from Avid. I'd recommend you get that book. Will ease the transition no doubt.
    Hope you make the jump!

  • Avid to FCP User Questions...

    Hi,
I recently made the switch from Avid to FCP - loving it so far, by the way. I have a few transition questions if someone can help me. These are things I've done fluently on the Avid and can't seem to find it in the manual.
    1. How do you mix audio levels and pans in the timeline for multiple clips? On MC, I set in and out point for the range of clips and move the level for it up and they all go up. Can't seem to do this in FCP.
    2. If I'm working in a 48K/16bit sequence and import audio to the bin, (or video too) is the only way to change the sample rate by exporting it with the sequence setting and then re-importing it? This seems like a lot of extra work if you have many clips. In Avid, it changes it simply in the menu.
    3. If I wanted to delete effects and transitions on multiple clips in the timeline, how do I do this? In the Avid, I would select the range of clips and then simply hit delete.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

    1. Highlight all the audio you want to effect...then type CONTROL-] to raise +3db...Control-[ to lower 3db. And Control + and - to raise 1db at a time.
    2. NOt sure what you mean here. Are you asking how do youconvert the audio to 48k 16-bit stereo for use in the sequence? Convert it BEFORE you get to your sequence. iTunes does this for music, as does Compressor, which also does this for ANY audio.
    3. Delete only the transitions and not the clips? Avid might have FCP there.

  • Markers on clips don't move with project when switching media drives

Here's an odd one. I'm editing a project in Premiere Pro CS6 and in order to avoid carrying drives back and forth between two editing locations, I cloned the footage drive and have one duplicate drive in each location. I'll call them location A and B.
I have no problem relinking clips when I move back and forth from location to location. That's all working great, as expected.
When I am reviewing clips at edit location A, I've been placing a marker on the hero moments to make them easier to find later when editing. The strange (or perhaps perfectly normal) thing is that when I move to edit location B and relink the clips, all of my markers that I made at location A are gone.
The same thing happens when creating markers on clips at location B. When I move to location A, the markers made at location A are there, but the new ones added at B are gone... until I return to location B.
In other words, it seems like markers are not saved as part of the project, but are saved within each clip file. If that's true, what I'm experiencing would make sense. Even though I'm relinking the clips when I change edit locations, the markers are part of the footage files on each of my duplicate drives and do not move with me when I change locations.
I just wanted to confirm this is "how premiere pro works," or see if there is a preference checkbox or workaround I'm not aware of. Maybe I've found a bug? If this is just how it is, I'll have to come up with an alternate way to mark footage I'm reviewing, or just move the drives with me when I move, which I'd love to avoid.
Thanks for any thoughs on this anyone has.

Wes, my deepest apoligies for not responding to your kind answer sooner. I had moved on, thinking it was just one of those things, until another editor colleague of mine, found my original question recently and emailed me to find out if there was a solution.
It appears that even with Premiere Pro CC, copying the XMP sidecar files to the second media drive remains the answer. Sadly my editor friend did most of his pre-edit clip marking in one city and traveled several states away to begin the edit and when he arrived, all of his marks were, of course, not there.
It would be great if somehow the metadata could be tied to the project, rather than the sidecar XMP files. Perhaps not technically feesible, but it would certainly make more sense from an editing standpoint to not have to be copying sidecar files every time you move to a edit location with duplicate media drives.
I will most likely write a feature request to see if this can be achived in future versions of Premiere.
Thanks again for your support and reply.

I have all my music on an external media drive that has crashed. How can I get the music of my ipod touch back onto the comupter without loosing the music when it syncs. in order to start rebuilding my music collection?

You should be able to recover the media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer but I'm not sure what the implications are for your application settings. You can probably transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any other media using third party tools, then restore the device from the backup. That should switch the assocation of the device to the new library but it is not something I've personally tested.
When you get it all working, make a backup!

  • How do I configure AirportExtreme or TimeCapsule to use UPnP or connect an iOmega Media Drive, Could Edition?

I recently purchased an iOmega Home Media Drvie, Cloud Edition, which claims functionality with the MacOS--and shared foldersdo appear on desktops connected the home network (wirelessly or otherwise)—however this puprose of this "Cloud Edition" is to be able to share files/the drive over the internet and I cannot seem to configure the Apple AirPort TimeCapsule to allow this (other routhers are configured automatically by the drive).
The documentation says "you’ll need to turn on Remote Access and enable UPnP on your router" and
The Home Media Drive tests for an active internet connection. If this test fails, check your network configuration.
The Home Media Drive will identify your WAN IP address. The WAN IP address is the extrnal address of your router or internet gateway and is the address your Home Media Drive will be identified by on the internet. If this test fails you will need to double check the network configuration of your Home Media Drive and your Router.
The Home Media Drive will test to make sure UPnP port forwarding is operating correctly. If this test fails, you will need to manually port forward your router.
Once the testing is complete, The device will be available on the internet via its WAN IP address, i.e. https://168.254.13.68. See the WAN IP Field for the exact address.
I can't figure out out how to do this, and I am not a networking dummy.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thank you!

If you have the Airport Extreme or TimeCapsule connected to another router from your ISP it can cause a double NAT situation.  You'd have to first port forward the primary router (from your ISP) to the secondary router using the same 50500 port that you are using to port forward the AirPort Extreme to the Iomega drive.  You want to be sure that you only have one router with DHCP and NAT enabled.  So the simplest solution is to turn the AirPort Extreme or TimeCapsule to a bridge.  Then restart all devices.  I reset the iOmega media drive after switching to bridge mode on the AirPort Extreme and the cloud was enabled and finally configured properly.  You can reset without loosing your data... but you will have to reconfigure all users including administrators.  Same with remote access.  Hope this helps.

I'm using  proxy media for a video I'm editing but now that i switch back to the original media some of my effects are missing can anyone help me.

Shouldn't happen.Only thing I can think of suggesting is to delete render files and try again. Trashing preferences is a long shot, but no harm in trying. Use the Digital Rebellion Preference Manager, a free download.
Assume you have a reason for using such an outdated version of FCP X. That may be contributing to your problem.

  • Avid to FCP comparison graphs or charts

Is there no quick charts to map what an avid icon looks like and the equivalent fcp icon?
If I wanted to lock the source (viewer) monitor to the record (canvas) monitor what would I use in fcp?
Is there a book that clearly describes the functions from avid to fcp? I am not having any luck with Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors.
    G4 duel processor

I took a bit different approach than Jim when coming over to FCP. As an editor who uses both Avid and FCP on a regular basis I found that the most basic commands, mark IN, OUT, go to IN, OUT, clear IN, OUT and stuff like that that I do over and over each day, I mapped my FCP keyboard to match Avid as closely as I could. When it comes to basic everyday workflow and media management, I find Avid works better. When it comes to effects and integration with other apps, FCP is the hands down choice. As for a direct comparisons.... here are 2 articles.
This was written by Patrick Inhofer and is very nice:

I wrote a follow up on my blog detailing some of the "simpler" things between the two apps:

But the debate will rage on as long as both apps exist.

  • Changing my external media drive question

My external media drive is full so I need to move the contents over to a new larger drive. I have another use for the old drive so want to reformat it.
Some of the media on the HD is in use in a project that's underway. I don't want to create problems with file linking and FCPX not knowing where to find the referenced media so thought I'd ask BEFORE I do something stupid.
Can I do something as simple as rename the new larger drive the same as the old drive and have FCPX notice the switch? I assume that's too simple & probably just a fantasy. Can anyone tell me the 'right' way to do this?
    Thanks.

Just select the project in the Project Library and go to File>Move Project. Then tell it where to move it to.
    Do the same with Events.

  • How to switch Organizer catalog from one hard drive to another?

As far as a little background, i have just finished two high definition projects in Premiere Elements, the last one being 73 projects combined into 6 blu rays.  It had completely filled up my 1TB hard drive, so i have purchased an additional 2TB internal hard drive, in hopes of being able to switch all my photoshop to the larger internal hard drive.  I am also archiving the old stuff as i finish each project to an external hard drive to free up space.
But i am PETRIFIED at the possibility of trying to move my Elements Catalog because of all the stories i have heard about having the majority of the photos needed to 'reconnect' after switching it to an external hard drive and I assume the same thing will happen to me if i move it to another internal hard drive???????   I have had several computer smart gentleman who have often helped me out when i had a problem and one refused to even venture how to successfully move the catalog and other guy's suggestion is to backup the entire Catalog and then restore it on the new drive.   Steve Grisetti said this morning on his webpage that i should cut and paste the file from one drive to the other but not quite sure how easy that is going to be, because when i have searched out the "move' option, it does not allow me to do anything there.  Could that be because i have files that need to be 'reconnected' first before i could accomplish that 'move.'    Steve suggested i come over to this Forum to get some opinions, which is what i have done.  That sounds like being more complicated than just cutting and pasting one folder with 16,000 photos.  What is the safest way to accomplish this without losing anything, and avoiding the need to 'reconnect' 16,000 files which i am not looking forward to.
So that is my first and foremost question about the Elements Organizer, but i do have some other related problems with the 'reconnect' problem, some of which i have figured out, but not completely.  After finally completing these two big projects, my next goal was to clean up my files, get things organized better, and i seem to be finding more and more problems to address.  The list of problems decreases with each project but i am still able to find new ones.  I am not a computer whiz, and probably shouldn't be trying to accomplish what i am doing with the basic Photoshop programs, something i know the majority of you would be using other more advanced Photoshop programs and much more easily, but i am starting to get this program down, and i don't need more challenges right now.
So i have 3 additional concerns and questions if anyone can help me out to prevent future problems with the next high definition project for Premiere Elements to burn onto blu rays.
    1.  Because i ran out of space totally on my old internal hard drive, i set up a temporary file on the new drive for the blu ray projects, and I was able to finish the remaining mpeg2s for the final 2 blu rays from Premiere Elements.  But when i finished, i started to clean up the files, and realized that the catalog was not recognizing any of the mpeg2 files that i had used to assemble the first 4 blu rays, which was the time i set up the new file on the new internal hard drive, and had copied and pasted my blu ray files.  It all seemed to go well, and i was able to finish the final 20 something projects and 2 final mpeg2s for the final blu rays which i prepared and burned on Sony DVD Architect.  . But when i went back and was looking at the final mpeg2 files for the previous 4 blu rays, they all needed to be 'reconnected', and i assume it was because the last 2 were on a different drive.  And after some effort, i was able to reconnect everything i think successfully.  And i am assuming that this will not continue to be a problem if i can get the entire Catalog on the same hard drive.  So write that one off to experience.
    2.  But i hadn't taken the time before doing the blu ray project to label my pictures completely, so the next project i started was renaming the filenames, which quickly presented a new problem, and that made for more 'reconnect' problems again for every picture that i renamed that was used in any of the Premiere Elements Project, so i was back to where i started but even worse off; however, the good news is that my photos were the best organized they ever have been.  So all the mpeg2's on the catalog once again asked for 'reconnect' and came to the conclusion that it must mean any name change in the 'filename' also makes it not recognizable.  With my first big Premiere Elements project which ended up with 4 blu rays, i made the very big mistake of organizing and moving files in windows, and that is problem #3.  So i have come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter, but lots of effort is not obtainable, but i guess i am wondering if it was really worth saving in working condition anyway??  The good news is that the individual photos are fine for the most part, but it is all the mpeg2 files that i combined the original photos into 73 projects, making a mpeg2 of each, then combining about 10-15 of the mpeg2s together and adding music to it, and forming the final mpeg2 which is what i then prepared to burn to blu ray in Sony Architect Studio.  The finished product is still present in the Sony Architect software, and i even burned a copy of them again to make sure that was possible,  So my gut feeling is just to delete all the mpeg2 files in my organizer, and forget they were ever there!  Does that make sense?????    I am not sure that i would ever use them again anyway, but what i am asking is obviously that something as simple as change in the filename screws up the catalog once again?????  Yes, i have learned my lesson, and they will all be finalized with the filename ever before i start the next project.  Just like with the first project, i learned to stay out of windows all together, and now i only use albums which i found no problems using at all.
    3.  Last problem is the oldest one, but one i still cannot solve.  It was from the first blu ray project when i was doing stupid things like moving folders, and photos from one folder to another to make it better organized.  And that was super-organized, and there was absolutely no need to change filenames!!!!!  I have two separate problems.  Some of the 'reconnects' do not have a picture but the gray square and the ?.  I have been able to find most of the files that i had 'displaced' and have recovered them, and knew where they were, and were able to change file names, and it looks like they are back in the catalog.  There was also a big file of photos that i found in a file that was the original download file for a given date which is how i NOW download my photos into Photoshop in the first place.  But i have not been able to reconnect any of them successfully.  They are there and i have renamed them, but the catalog still does not recongize them as being in the Catalog.  The other group are photos where the picture shows in the catalog, but there is a ? to reconnect, but i cannot find the photos anywhere.  These are of a trip of a once in a life time variety, so i have refused to just press delete, and i thought i had perhaps somehow deleted them all, but i have either found them in another file or the photo is present but i can't rename, i can't reconnect, and for all practical purposes they don't seem to be there.  Any suggestions at all?  Do i have any other options other than just to delete those whole period of my trip?
I am longwinded, but i wanted to try and give enough background information.  The problem seems simple, but i just want to confirm the problems i have run into are for the reason i think they are, and any help on how to successfully move the catalog to the second internal hard drive will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance for any comments and or suggestions.
    Ron

Thanks for your suggestions, i knew i had overdone it when i wrote the entire story.  Just a couple direct questions based on your response!!
Just a couple of questions, i am assuming all the reconnection problems have to be taken care of either by connecting or deleting before the catalog can be moved.  Correct?
The reconnect problems i have were not renamed outside of Photoshop, and the renaming does not seem to be an issue except for mpeg2s that are in the catalog that were used to generate the blu rays but i think it was me screwing things up when i didn't know better and was moving folders and photos in folders (Window type) .   Since the blu rays are in the Sony software complete and ready to reburn easily, i assume it would be okay to delete all those that are in the catalog, that need to be reconnected for whatever reason.  Plus the individual photos of most of them are just fine.  I am talking 376 'reconnect problems' counting all those mpeg2 files which are at least the majority of the 376.  Probably would be nice to have, but is there any reason i have to keep them since the photos are okay and the blu rays are burned and still in the Sony Architect program intact?
What i don't understand is the important photos that are worth trying to save seem to be in the proper folder, which is what is stated in properties, but the photo is in the catalog, but with the ? and cannot do anything with it at all, without just going to reconnection, and when i try to identify the folder, it says it is empty, which those are NOT.   If it takes 'forever', then albeit, at least for these few pictures.  I really don't want to delete those!
And is it possible to do what my computer tech is telling me that it will all transfer accurately and completely if we backup the entire catalog and then restore it to the new drive?.  It seems like after i complete the reconnects one way or another, it might be an easier process that can be completed totally within Element?    Since the catalog is on c drive, i guess i can't do what you suggested buy why?
I kept to those tips you gave me.  It seems like an impossibility to save these pictures, but these were from my very first efforts with Premiere Elements and blu rays.  Other than the renaming the changing and affecting the Premiere Elements projects in the second one, i have no other problems, and have no recconect problems.  So i guess i am moving in the right direction.  I just don't need to keep finding ways to make more problems for myself.

I bought a Sandisk Connect Media Drive, downloaded the app from iTunes.  Before iOS 8, movies played fine.  After iOS upgrade I can no longer play movies downloaded from iTunes to the media drive.  Anyone else have a similar issue?

I checked with SanDisk's own online support and they indicate that they have notified Apple of the issue.
According to SanDisk, the problem lies with Apple not having the iOS 8 version of the Safari browser having DRM decoding enabled that the Media Drive relies upon to decode and play iTunes DRM titles. Non DRM encoded videos will play in the browser.
DRM audio is not effected as this is handled by the native iOS music app.
As of the date of this post SanDisk have not been given a timeframe by Apple for this issue to be resolved.
I hope that Apple resolves this issue quickly as I have a large collection of DRM video titles on a 128Mb memory card installed in the Media Drive that I am unable to view.

What version of iPhoto do you have?  With Yosemite you must be running iPhoto 9.6.1 which is a available from the App Store.  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll have to download and apply the  iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 to the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.6.1. It'll be located in the Applications/Utilities folder after downloading.

As long as the memory pressure is in the green and constant and you're not seeing a lot of SWODs you shouldn't be concerned about the memory.  Of course increasing memory will nearly always improve general system and application performance. • Why No Support For HP hd7500s Personal Media Drive?

I have a Personal Media Drive hd7500s (750 gb), installed in the equipment bay,  that my HP Pavillion has stopped recognizing.  There is power to the drive as indicated by the lights on the front.  General Troubleshooting info at this site suggests I attempt to hook it up as an external drive, using the USB connection.  Before I can, however, the USB port on the back of the personal media drive appears to have a plastic protective cap on the USB contacts; but I am wary of using any more plier force than I've already applied to remove this unsuccessfully.  So I went to this site looking for tech data on my drive.
No matter how many different ways I enter the SKU, the model number, even the serial number of this HP Personal Media Drive, the search returns nothing.  What gives??

Apparently HP does not offer support for this device. Seems pretty bad as I purchased mine about a year ago and if I had known HP was not going to support it I would not have purchased it....SUPRISE, I guess that is why they did not tell me!!!
