Switching Hard Drive With A Macbook

Hi,
I am curious to know if I am able to switch my Santa Rosa Hard drive with a Macbook Pro hard drive. Will everything still work with my Macbook Pro? Or will it only work with other regular macbooks, or only that specific macbook?
Thank you for any feedback

The MacBooks and MacBook Pros use different graphics processors. I know under Tiger... this would not work. I'm not sure about Leopard. Leopard is designed to support all current Intel and PowerPC Macs. Traditionally... Apple ships an OS specific to the hardware it's being installed on... but I haven't really seen any comments regarding this since Leopard has been released. The easiest thing to do (and fairly inexpensive)... would be to get an external SATA drive enclosure and put your MacBook drive in it... then plug it into your MacBook Pro and try to boot from it. If it works... you're probably okay with swapping them out. Noting that the hard drive in the MacBook is considered user replacable and is very easy to access... and the drive in the MacBook Pro is not considered user replacable and "may" void future warranty service if a problem is found related to your having opened up the MacBook Pro to replace the drive.

Yes, they are both SATA drives and should work fine.

  • Can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop to use files on the airport?

can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop and use files on the airport time capsule?

If you mean an AirPort base station other than the Time Capsule, it doesn't have internal storage.
If you mean a Time Capsule, its internal drive can be used for regular file storage but shouldn't be; as with all drives, it'll eventually fail. You're better off using a standalone drive and setting Time Machine to back it up as well.

  • Sharing a PC hard drive with my Macbook?`

    Here's what my problem is:
I have a Macbook (OSX Tiger) with only 20 or so GB's of free space, and a PC (Win XP) with 127 GB's of free space. Both computers are connected to the internet with my Airport Extreme base station (PC is wired, Macbook is wireless). I have quite a bit of movies and music, and I would like to be able to move the movies (They don't have DRM's) to the PC's hard drive so that I can still access and watch them at home, but free up space on my hard drive. I know I can buy an external hard drive, but I don't want to spend the money, and burning them as data files to DVD's seems inefficient, since I download a couple of new movies every week.
    Here's how far I've gotten:
My Macbook recognizes the Windows HD, and the C Drive on the PC is set to share with other users on the network, and allow them to change files. I have a folder on the C Drive that is labeled so I can store my Mac files in it, also with the same sharing settings. On my Mac, Personal File Sharing and Windows File Sharing are both enabled in both the Services and Firewall tabs of System Preferences> Sharing.
    Here's what's throwing me for a loop:
When I drag a file on my Mac onto the PC's hard drive and into my special folder, my Mac gives me a message that says "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." This happens even if I created the file myself.
I'm stuck on what else to do. I don't know if I am getting the message because my PC's setting aren't correct, or because my Mac settings aren't correct. Thanks for any help, and please reply if any clarifications are needed.

Of course, I don't think you made it up.
However, I do not use third party software and I am able to read, change, and discard whatever I want in the NTFS formatted drive from my PPC mac. In fact, I just tested it. I went into my C drive on the PC through my Mac and opened up a word document. Made changes to it and saved it. I went to my PC and made sure the changes had been made and they had. So...unless I am using third party software without my knowledge and I'm not since I am only one with access to either computer, it can be done!
Now if I could just figure out how to print to a printer hooked up to XP, I would be a happy camper!

  • Install on new hard drive with '06 macbook

    Hello.
A couple of days ago my 80 gig hard drive gave out, so today I bought a new 250 Samsung hard drive, which I have installed. However, when I turn the macbook on with install DVD in and press the button, c, which I have been told is what you need to do to start the install, nothing happends... The same folder with a question mark just keeps appearing...
    What is wrong?
    Best regards
    Jesper Pedersen

It sounds like you may need to format the Samsung hard drive for use with Snow Leopard. Normally, you would do that by starting up from the Snow Leopard DVD & using its copy of Disk Utility (found in the "Utilities" menu) to partition the drive, making sure you choose the *GUID Partition Map* partitioning scheme from the "options" button in the Partition tab of Disk Utility.
However, you apparently also have a problem with the optical drive since you cannot start up from the Snow Leopard DVD with it. This is very likely, since even without the option or C key press, if your Mac can find no other viable startup volume it would eventually normally start up from the Snow Leopard DVD without your doing anything special.
My guess is that whatever problem affected your original HD also has affected the optical drive. To confirm this, perhaps you can take the Mac & the DVD to the support specialist at your university for further assistance.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

  • I've lost the use of Appleworks in 10.9.2. Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other?

I've lost the use of Appleworks by upgrading to 10.9.2.
Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other? I'd like to be able to boot to the older OS when I need Appleworks and  few other applications that aren't available on OS 10.9.2.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello again, WZZZ,
Here's an update. I was successful in creating two partitions on my internal drive, and in installing OS 10.6.6 on the second partition, as per your guidence. I now have it up to 10.6.8 with all the security updates and AppleWorks. A great thing.
    Some thoughts:
    • The partitioning had one hitch; it failed at first. But once I "repaired" the disc with Disc Utility the partitioning went thru.
    • The partitioning took a long time in 'resizing the partition.' A few hours I think it was. Lots of progress bar watching.
    • If I had it to do again, I'd size the two partitions differently. My original data was occupying about 230 Gb of the 320 Gb disc. I made the new partitions share the space, about 230 and 75Gb. That left very little available space for the main disc. I ought to have put some breathing room in there. As it is, it's an incentive to clean up all those files, especially all those iTunes files. I now have about 10% of available space there and mean to continue deleting.
So, all in all a good project that got me where I wanted to go. Thank you for your help.
    Appreciatively,
    wallah

  • MacBook hard drive is full again. Replaced original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive about 18 mo. ago, but my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again.  13in. Alum. Late 2008 MacBook

My MacBook hard drive is full again. I have a 13in. Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook, and about 18 months ago (in October 2013), I replaced the original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive. However, my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again.  When I check "System Information," under "Storage," it states the following:  Audio 52.02 GB; Movies 33.68GB; Photos 43.13GB; Apps 14.76 GB; Backups 174.4 MB; and Other 96.39GB.
Also, at home, I have an Apple Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB that I use as my wireless router, and I also use it for automatic backup via Time Machine.  And when I first purchased Time Capsule, the first time I connected Time Capsule, Time Machine asked if I would like to use it to back up my files, and I clicked, "Use as Backup Disk."  And that's really all I've ever done with Time Capsule.
In addition, I also have a LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 1TB external hard drive.  I have copied my MacBook's hard drive onto my LaCie external hard drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Obviously the Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps are taking up a lot of space... Any suggestions re: what I can do with Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps?  And what about the Other?  Other is taking up 96.39 GB. What is Other, and what can I do about it?
And what about partitioning my hard drive... Is that something I should do?  Should I partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently?  And should I partition, or configure, my external hard drive?  And if I need to partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently, how do I setup Time Machine to backup per any such changes?  Same thing for my external hard drive?

    Thank you for your help.

Partitioning makes no sense. You have a drawer full of stuff. Split it into two smaller drawers and you have two smaller drawers full of stuff.
Decide what you can store on external storage - your iPhoto/Aperture/Lightroom libraries can all be stored on externals, as can your iTunes Libraries and so on. Do you need to carry 30 gigs of movies with you all the time? You  can get portable drives the size of an iPhone these days.

i have just bought a macbook pro and i want to use an ext hard drive with it which i previously used on a windows computer, but when i plug it in it doesn't show up on my macbook pro, I've wiped it and just need to format it but don't know how, any help would be much appreciated

Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen.

  • I see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • Can I Replace my Early 2009 Mac Mini Hard Drive with my Early 2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive?

I am replacing my 2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive with a Solid State Drive.  Instead of keeping the hard drive on an external enclosure I was wondering if I can use it to upgrade my Mac Mini's 160GB hard Drive with the one Im taking out of the MBP.  And if so, is there any special formatting I would need to do?

It should work fine. No special formatting required. It actuality, I suspect that if you connect the HD, the Mini will boot into the OSX that was on the MacBook.
When you replace the HD in the Mini just be careful with the antennas and their wires and connections I accidentally disconnected the wifi antenna on mine when I replaced the HD.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
