I just bought an iphone 5s
however, my mom has a 3gs and i want to give her my 4s. how can i transfer her sim card and phone number to 4s? she doesnt really have anything on the phone. i need it to transfer the service line. the sim card i have in the 4s..is probably for my phone number. anyone knows what to do?

You are going to need to make a back up with itunes, then you can erase the phone and give it to your mom. Once you get your new 4s then just restore your back up, and your set.

Could one switch an iPhone from a Windows XP computer to an Apple seamlessly, or are you stuck with whichever system you initially sync up with? I will be getting my iPhone 3GS on the 19th, and shortly thereafter (not sure of the timeframe) I will be in a position to purchase a new laptop. I'm contemplating getting a Macbook and I'd like the option of syncing up on either the Windows desktop or the Macbook at my convenience.

I got an MBP, plugged in my phone, it transferred some purchased stuff, kept all my settings and such, basically it was just the iPod functionality that changed; I had to put my iTunes library on my new computer and resync the songs/videos/etc. That's about it.
All of my apps and email and other phone specific settings were left alone.
It may be worth noting that I was syncing with Exchange over the air, so my Mail was not synced through iTunes. Your mileage may vary.

Switching iPhone from AT&T to Verizon

I just got a Verizon iPhone today and I'm trying to switch all of my content from my AT&T iPhone, but it only seems to let me restore from my iPhone 3G, which last synced in August 2010. So it will lose nearly a year of texts, contacts, photos, etc. So I reset everything on the Verizon phone and started from scratch. This time I set it up as a new phone. So now I am able to sync all my contacts, calendar and apps, but nothing is sorted correctly and I don't have my photos or texts, and I will have to spend the time going through my music again.
Help?

Ok, after a day of using the Verizon iPhone, I have gotten over this annoyance. Verizon is so much better. I have apparently been deluding myself for the past three years that AT&T has good service. 3G on Verizon is super fast. Checking my email used to take at least a minute, usually even longer, if it didn't fail altogether. I have been using the Verizon iPhone in all the same places I used the AT&T iPhone, and checking my mail is now instantaneous. I was able to have a Skype video call over 3G without it dropping even once. I can watch Netflix without the movie stopping to buffer. I am amazed.

Switching iPhone from PC to Mac, from one computer to another??

I just got my iPhone. Haven't activated it yet, b/c I also ordered a Macbook Pro. Should I wait until the Macbook comes to activate my iPhone? Or can I just activate it using my PC, and then switch it over to the Macbook? I know that you cant do that with an iPod unless you wipe it completely.
I ordered Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac, so I think with a cable I'll be able to load all my iTunes onto my new Mac from my current PC. Will Parallels be able to do anything regarding iPhone migration (contacts, etc.)?

You should run into any issues. I activated my iPhone on a PC and use it regularly on my Macs.

Could you be a bit more specific, please?
Where are you trying to get the music from and to?
If this is about the music not loading from your mac to your phone, then the issue is likely that the phone is still tied to the library on the PC. If you have already migrated your iTunes library to the mac, then moving a copy of the backup file to the mac and restoring the phone with it should fix the problem.
Again. more details will allow more specific answers.

Somehow gained 6GB of storage in transfer from 3gs to iphone 4

I switched from 3Gs to Iphone 4. Both are 32gb. I downloaded new OS and am using current itunes. I updated all apps and then backed up 3gs. I then activated Iphone 4 and restored from backup. The number of apps, music, photos and videos are the same between 3Gs and 4 under usage. Somehow I now have 6 free GB in my iphone 4 where my 3Gs was almost full. Everything appears o be working fine but I feel like 6Gb is a pretty large discrepency between two phones with the same amount of data and I am worried about trouble down the road before i lose my 3Gs backup. Anyone run across this or have a good explanation? I appreciate the help.

Plug your 3GS in and see how much space each thing is taking, then plug your iP4 in and compare. Woulda' been easier than posting.

If you registered your iPhone with Apple using a support profile, try going to https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do and unregistering it. Also, try changing the password associated with the Apple ID that you were using for iMessage.

Question about transferring data from 3GS to iPhone 5

I upgraded from 3GS to iPhone 5. Before reading any articles on transferring data through iTunes, I configured my 3 email programs, contacts and calendar (Google). The Apple instuctions state that I should backup 3GS FIRST, then restore to iPhone 5. Question is, if I do the backup and restore AFTER having configured my mail programs, will that cause problems, such as creating duplicate accounts and contacts? I am especially concerned about creating duplicates in my contact list, which would be a semi-horror if I had to delete every other one of over 1,700 names. Perhaps I should delete my email accounts and contact list BEFORE restoring to my iPhone 5, basically start from scratch?

When restoring the device, whatever is currently setup on the device is irrelevant. Everything currently setup on the device will be erased.

Please read and follow the instructions of the Apple link you posted from. Please note, if you have a 3G as opposed to a 3GS, you can not upgrade above iOS 4.2.1.

How are you trying to transfer it and what are your setting on iTunes. I'm not on a computer that has iTunes at the moment so I'm going from memory and similar issue. If iTunes is set to sync music then I don't think you can select and drag, if set to manual manage music then you can. Also make sure you are dragging to music on the iPhone.

Connect your 3GS in recovery mode and restore, you'll get the option to reset the passcode during this process:
iOS: Unable to update or restore and iPhone and iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

I'm getting the new iphone 4 tomorrow morning as soon as they come out. Last time I changed from a 3G to a 3GS I lost all of my apps and music. Can anyboy help me and tell me if there is something I can do to prevent this happening again tomorrow?

I just went from 3G to 4. The steps I used was:
1) Activate the iphone 4 as a new phone (not from backup)
2) tested mosts functions to make sure the phone was good.
3) restored the iphone from backup of my 3G which I upgraded to iOS4 Monday.
4) Allowed time for all the data to be restored to the phone.
5) put in any required passwords, etc for email and wifi network.
Are all these steps necessary? I don't know, but it worked for me.

Hi, when I try to switch my line to an iphone from another device online, it is said that I have to enter the new device ID number, and it is 14 digis. but I found that the iphone ID is 40 digis when I google it online. So ,what is the solution????thanks~!!

Yes. You might be able to follow the steps listed and do it on your own (just make sure when it gets to the point in iTunes to add your info you add your phone number). If you run into trouble or would rather make sure it is done right you can contact Verizon or go to the store and have them activate it on your line.
