Switching iPod from Mac iTunes to a computer iTunes

We just switched from a Mac to a Dell computer. Problem is when I try to upload my iPod to the computer, it says it's set up for a Mac, and that I have to restore it first. But if I restore it, it will delete all my music. Any suggestions?

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. Once you have your songs saved to the PC you can go ahead and restore the iPod for Windows. You can get XPlay at this link: XPlay 2
XPlay is currently only compatible with Windows XP, 2000, Me or 98SE, a new version for Vista is planned for release later this year.

  • Switching iPod from Mac to PC

I have a 60 GB video iPod that I originally formatted using my iMac G5 in December last year. My wife uses it primarily, and she has a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP. She has been relying on me to update her iPod but now wants to do it herself so she can have her own library and use her laptop to shop on iTunes.
So my question is: if you were me, what would be the simplest, most efficient way to get the songs she currently has on her mac-formatted iPod into a library on her PC? Should I just bite the bullet and rip all her CDs again onto her laptop, then reformat the iPod? (There's about 10 GB on her iPod)
Is there a way to save the music she already has on her iPod somewhere, reformat the iPod, and then somehow reload the saved files onto her PC?
What would be ideal would be just to plug in the iPod into her PC, and have iTunes recognize it as is, but I know that's probably not possible. Is it?
Maybe we should just get her a new laptop ...

Personally a new Mac Portable sounds like a good option I might be a little biased in that regard.
    However, here is the steps:
    1) Formate the iPod for Windows by restoring it on her computer
    2) Follow the steps in this article to transfer your music over using the iPod:

    or

    3) Then update the iPod from her Windows-based PC

  • Switching ipod from mac to windows

I previously used my iPod with my Mac and Powerbook. Now I have purchased a PC. My computer recognizes my iPod but none of my songs appear under my iPod. What's wrong? Any help appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Nothing is wrong. As the other poster said, since your iPod was previously setup with a Mac, it is in Mac format. Your new PC will not be able to read your iPod as it is.
There are 2 possible ways to make your iPod work with your PC:
    (1) Restore the iPod using the Windows version of the iPod software updater. This will erase everything on your iPod including your previous songs but the iPod will then be readable by your PC. Note that you have to install iTunes first, and then the iPod software updater. Download them from the given links if you do not have them.
    (2) Get some special third party programs such as Xplay, which allows you to read your Mac formatted iPod directly with your PC. You can then access the songs on your iPod. The software is not free, however.
What do you want to do?

How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format?? My Imac is not working at the moment, but I want to use my Ipod on my PC. How do I get my Ipod(mac formated) to get work on my PC??

Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

  • How to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes

how to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes ???
as i want to use my ipad for official use as well...please suggest..

well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

Is it possible to reformat a classic ipod from Mac to PC? My mother has rejected my old Powerbook and wants to keep her pc(!) but her ipod is synced to the powerbook.
I would like to a) download everything from the ipod to her pc and b) reformat the ipod to work with her pc. Can it be done? Appreciate any and all advice.

Once you have the contents of the iPod saved to the PC you can restore it in iTunes for Windows. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Windows version and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Formatting 3rd Gen ipod from Mac to Windows

    Hello.
I need to format a 3rd Gen iPod from Mac to windows for my Father in Law.
So please can anyone tell what the process is?
    Many thanks,

The iPod is formatted for both PC and Mac, I used to use mine with a PC, bought a Mac, plugged it in and it worked with the Mac no problem. I'm not sure that this works both ways though, if you're having problems you could try this link for help: http://ipod.about.com/od/restoreandreformatipod/a/ipod_reformat.htmhttp://

  • Switching from mac to PC and using iTunes + iPod

I recently switched from PC to a Mac Mini. It's great, but I don't know how to move my music library from PC to Mac.
After that, what is the handling to do for using my iPod (previously used with PC) with my Mac now.
    Thank you

Yeah, that's the first time I've heard that one (switching from Mac to PC). I know this doesn't pertain to your question, but why are you switching? I'm running Vista and my next comp will definitely be a Mac. In addition to AV, Antisypware, and a firewall, be sure to get a Registry cleaner and defragmenting program (unless you want to use the crappy one that comes with Windows). I'm looking forward to not having to spend so much time keeping Windows working right and money securing it.

  • Switch iPod from PC to Mac

Just switched from PC to iMac and had all of our data swapped over (music, photos, documents, etc.).  It appears all of the music we had in iTunes on the PC carried over, just not any of the playlists.  When I connect my iPod Classic and iPad, I receive messages that both are still "tethered" to another computer, and that if I want to sych them with our new one I have to essentially wipe them clean.  How to I "untether" both from our old, disconnected PC to our new iMac without losing everything on each device?

Plug it back into the PC and then change the setting for the iPod from Auto Update to Manual update. Eject and plug into Mac...

  • Switching ipod from windows to mac

I have a windows computer and i am switching my ipod to my powebook but i can't update it and cannot put songs onto my ipod or get them from my ipod, i want to make it mac formatted. my ipod doesn't work on my windows computer anymore either which isn't a problem but i can't use that computer to fix the problem. thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you want to make your iPod Mac formatted, you need to download the Mac version of iPod software updater and install it on your Powerbook. Then run it and connect the iPod when told. Choose to restore. This will convert the iPod to Mac format which will erase everything on it.
Make sure your iPod is fully charged first.

  • Switching Ipod from PC to MAC format

    Hi All,
When I first purchased my Ipod I used it with a PC. I have made the move to a Mac (a Macbook) and would like to use that to sync my Ipod. Currently the Ipod is formatted for Windows. What do I have to do to get it to work with the mac? is it as simple as just plugging it into the mac or do I have to do something else? Thanks in advance!!!

Macs can read Windows formatting so you should have no problem connecting your iPod to your Macbook. One proviso is that up until now Apple has only fully supported using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. What this means effectively is that if you need to apply a firmware update for your iPod and you wanted to maintain the Windows format you would have to do it on a PC. If you were to try and update a Windows based iPod on a Mac it would be restored and reformatted to the Mac file system and have the Mac firmware installed. if you want to reformat the iPod for Mac you just need to restore it in iTunes for Mac.
Just be aware that restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Mac version and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up.
