Switching iTunes folder and all music folders to new drive

My C Drive is getting bogged down. I would like to switch both the iTunes application including full library, and all my music folders from my C drive over to a new internal hard drive ("F").
So, 1. How do I move everything over to the new "F" drive?
And, 2. How will iTunes know that now all the songs are there? I mean, doesn't it look for their path as in the C drive? Will the path on all songs automatically change to list "F" instead of "C"? Do I have to manually change each song's path?
I'm not a computer wiz, but can follow simple directions!
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Chris -
OK. I get it. That iTunes folder stays on C. I just have to get over it, right?
So, should I eliminate that same iTunes folder from my F drive? Obviously, the libraries should stay on F (or it that not obvious?).
So, now let me pick your brain on my second question....
My understanding is that all of my music is stored in folders ("My Music" for example). They are located both on my F drive (my songs) and the C drive (my kids' songs). I want all music folders on my F drive - both mine and my kids'.
I've moved individual songs from C to F, and when iTunes goes to play them, it'll say - "Hey, I can't find this song anymore", and I'll have to click Browse and click on the new location (in F) so that it sees the song is there.
So, if I move the entire folder of kids songs to my F drive, will the individual song location paths change from C to F? Or will iTunes totally freak out, trying to locate everyone one of their zillions of songs?
Thanks in advance.

  • ITUNES folder and My Music Folder

My ITUNES folder doesn't appear to have as much music in it as My Music folder does.
Can I delete the ITUNES folder contents and reload My Music folder into it (Via ITUNES using Add A Folder - The folder being My Music)?
Are the files linked between the ITUNES folder and My Music or does it duplicate the music MP3 files inside the ITUNES folder?  Thank you.

This doesn't quite address the question you've asked, but take a look at https://discussions.apple.com/message/17267509#17267509 for background.
I'd suggest if you're going to use iTunes you put all the media inside the iTunes Media folder rather than having some at the My Music. Without knowing more details I can't tell if the reason that My Music is that much bigger than iTunes is because everything has been duplicated, or because you also have lots of files in WMA format. I also can't say if deleting the current contents of iTunes and then reimporting wouldn't throw away stuff that only exists in iTunes at present.
It is much better to throw away stuff you've checked you don't need than to throw away too much and then discover you've made a mistake.

You now need to get your pictures back! The similar to you, after I updated my iPad Mini, I can't get my some files on device. I tried many ways, fortunately, I got a tool from http://tinyurl.com/Data-Recovery-iPhone to help me recover lost files easily! It supports iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc iOS devices!

  • Having Music in the itunes folder and my music folder

ive always had my music in my My Music folder, but never in my itunes music folder. ive just consolidated all my music files into the itunes music folder for better organisation. if i now delete the music from My Music, will itunes give a ! to every track even though it knows i have it all in the itunes folder?
also, if i add music in the future, do i add it straight into the itunes music folder, or into My Music which my itunes will then automatically add into itunes?

I'm not sure what you did.
    Did you Backup your library?
If it's a backup you should not use it for playback.
If you want to move your library to a new location please use this:

  • Change my itunes account and all devices to a new pc

Hi I was wondering how I can change over everthing that has to do with my itunes to my new laptop. Me and my wife have several apple devices. We both have Iphones and 3 ipod touches plus just purchased and ipad. I have a new laptop and transfered all my apps, music and books with software I purchased. I'm sure I have everything I need on my new pc. I have folders set up on my phone and ipod and want them to stay the same, when i synced my ipod all the contact info was there but my folders are missing or are empty and the apps are all in different places. With my old itunes account I could sync so my ipod was set up the same as my phone and it worked great but now I'm scared to sync my phone on my new pc and undo all my folders and have everything messed up. Also my wife has her phone and ipod organized different than mine and she wants hers to stay the same also. I guess what I want is for Itunes on my new pc to act like it did on my old pc. I would like to be able to sync my ipod so it has the same folders, contacts, music and apps as my phone, and be able to sync my wifes ipod so she has the same folders, contacts, music and apps as her phone. I was planing on giving away my old laptop to someone who could use it so I really dont want to keep it just so I can use it for itunes. Thanks for any help.

All iTunes purchases are permanently attached to the account used to obtain them and can't be transferred.
I would suggest you relocate your iTunes library onto a drive big enough to hold it all, with room for growth, and obtain a second to act as a backup.

  • Putting library and all music on external hard drive

This may be obvious, but I want to put all my music on an external hard drive to free up space on my laptop. I want to be able to plug in my ipod and have it update the full music library. I tried changing the library in advanced preferences and it just made a folder that didn't have anything in it on the external hard drive. Do I have to drag and drop Itunes Library from my internal harddrive user folder to the external? Thanks, and sorry for the slightly dunderheaded question.

In the iTunes preferences, under the "Advanced" tab, you have to make sure to uncheck the option to "Copy files to the iTunes Media folder when adding to library". Make sure to keep the option above it checked, that reads "Keep iTunes Media folder organized". Then, when you want to add music to your library, put the new music file in the external drive's folder with the rest of your music files, then drag it to the iTunes icon. iTunes will keep it on the external drive and organize it in there.
This is at least what I do. Perhaps others have a different way to do it but that has worked pretty well for me.

  • Moving itunes folder and music to external drive

I moved my itunes folder and all my mp3's onto an external hard drive. As a result, all of the songs that appear in itunes has a ! and says they cannot find where the songs are. It seems that I have to re-import everything all over again including re-ripping all my CD's to itunes again. Is there a better way to go about retrieving my library? Is there a way to import what is on my ipod into itunes or is it only a 1 way thing? Please help.

Go to edit-->preferences Click the advanced tab
Change the location of the iTunes music library to the current location. I don't recall if it will then update the links. If they still show up with the ! after the change, post back for instructions on how to tell iTunes they are there all at once.

  • Can iTunes search for all music on my system and rebuild the library?

Is there any way to make iTunes search for all music on my hard drive and completely rebuild the library from scratch?
    Thanks.

do you know how to re-locate files to an existing library?
All of a sudden, about 2/3 of my songs (over 6,000) will not play and a box comes up saying "The song 'x' could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I went to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and have the correct (fixed) external drive letter selected for the folder location. and the files haven't moved, but iTunes isn't finding them. Restarted the computer making sure the drive was on.
I'd like to not lose all the ratings I've worked on. Hoping you or someone has a solution!!
    thanks!

  • How do you take your existing iTunes Library and move it to an External Drive?

I'm at my capacity of Storage Space on my iMac w/ the majority of memory being used via iTunes.  Is there a way to move my existing Library to my external Hard Drive and still look/run the same as if on my computer?  How can new loaded music/movies/etc. be loaded to that same library on the external drive?  Will I need to do something different in my normal Time Capsule Backup since the Library no longer resides on my computer's Hard Drive?  Many thanks for the help?

I copied the entire iTunes Folder within [myusername > Music] to my new external drive.
at this point, you need to launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
I then went to 'Advanced' in iTunes Preferences and pointed the new folder location to the copied iTunes folder on the external drive.
this only tells iTunes where to put new additions to your library, not where the current content is.

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

    hI, bella
I also met this issue a few days ago and I finally find out how to transfer music from iPod to computer:
    1. Plug your iPod in and wait for the computer to recognize it.
    2. Open up 'My Computer' and under 'Devices With Removable Storage', double click and open apple iPod.
    3. Click on 'Tools' at the top of the window and drag down to 'Folder Options'.
    4. Under the 'View' tab, find the subfolder called 'Hidden files and folders'.
    5. Select the option 'Show hidden files and folders'.
    6. Click 'OK'.

An exclamation mark means that it doesn't know where you moved the music to.  To fix this, click on the exclamation point and when it asks you to browse to the location where you moved it to, use the normal commands to go up and down folders in your external drive until you find the song.  Repeat as necessary.

You'll need to switch off iTunes Match on the device & sync the iPod with iTunes as hopefully you've kept all your music on your PC.

  • Should the admin/user folder and all of its sub folders be moved to the hdd or just parts of it? (eg. picture, movies, documents)  What is the best way to go about doing this.  Also should a 2t hdd be partitioned.

Yes, you can move your user directories to the HD and keep your OSX and Applications on the SSD drive.
Whether you partition your HD or not depends on how much data you have and how you propose to use your HD.
Are you planning to use your iMac as a Time Machine backup volume? If so, partition it off.
Do you have huge data files, eg video, music, photos?
How much of your 2tb drive will be "free" once it is loaded with all your data?
A little more information is required before the optimal configuration can be recommended for your use.

  • I switched to iCloud and all of my music is gone

I switched to iCloud and all of my music is gone and itunes is empty!!!! Also problems with calendar

Here's my problem - somewhat same topic I think. My kids on their devices have inadvertantly up until about a year ago purchased music with an email address I had briefly. A lot of it... And in past years I, on our itunes account have changed my email address as employment or the need arose.
The problem here is that the primary itunes account [email protected] for example, is what I setup all our devices to use itunes-icloud service yesterday that touts "access ALL of your music from your devices anywhere, anytime". OK. That's not true. It ONLY shows with the icloud icon in all of our devices the music either burned manually or associated with the itunes account we are logged into ([email protected])  Anything purchased from any of 3 other or more addresses (which none of us use or even have access to anylonger) are just not accessable.
I thought this was FINALLY going to be the ultimate sync across devices without wasting storage space needlessly.
What the heck?? I can't consolidate the accounts (the sensible approach here) and I can't see anyway to "alias" those to associate with the [email protected] or anything remotely making this a single library.
    So...
I'm PAYING for a service that says I can get to all my music. NOPE. It DOES NOT DO THIS!!!
How about letting me add them to my appleID when managing my ID from apple.com? Nope. Doesn't work either. That's shortsighted Apple!! Come on!
