Try hitting the CapsLock key, it should change the keyboard to English.
When you have access, go to system prefs/users & groups/login options and check the box for Show Input Menu in Login Page.

  • How to switch the keyboard language when using a bluetooth keyboard?

When using the on-screen keyboard I have the little globe to switch languages, but when using a bluetooth keyboard the on-screen keyboard is hiden.
I want to be able to write in different languages using the bluetooth keyboard, also the auto-correct gets in the way if I write in a different language than english and it tries to change the words to the closest similar english word.
    Help!

I see that now Tom, I'm sorry to confuse things.  I think my problem might have been that I had the keyboard too far away from the phone, and so when I looked back from the keyboard to the phone, the screen indication of the languages had already disappeared from the screen.  Because I have more than one language with Roman characters installed, I thought that no change was occurring from that sequence of commands, since I wasn't getting Korean.  But now that I see your correction, and watch the screen closely, I see that you're right.  I apologize.  (And of course, I'm grateful to have a simpler way of switching languages!)

  • Illustrator keeps switching my keyboard language

    Hi,
I have a very frustrating problem on several computers, while i'm working in Illustrator, suddenly the Z becomes Y instead and all other signs are somewhere else - it basically changes language keyboard. I work with a swiss german keyboard but my program language is english. My regional preferences are set up correctly and no other applications give me this grief except Illustrator. I'm forced to shut it down and re-open, then the keyboard is back to its correct state, until it switches again.
I don't understand what causes it to suddenly switch keyboards while I'm working - does anyone know how I can make Illustrator STOP it? It's especially unnerving since the Undo command Ctrl+Z gives you Outline mode instead.
Thanks if anyone has info on this problem!

I think I found the bugger - for some reason they left out Windows 7 as an operating system entirely - but for Vista it says the combination Shift+Alt causes the change of keyboard - this combination is used constantly in Illustrator to contraint a movement simultaneously as you're duplicating said item. What an unnerving duplication in commands!
Thanks for the help, I think I sorted it out now by just not assigning any hot key to language change.

  • Switching language pref in iPad using wireless keyboard

The Apple Bluetooth wireless keyboard has no globe icon. Is there some shortcut I can use to switch languages (i.e., change the keyboard) when the wireless keyboard is connected to my iPad Air? I have several languages entered in Settings, so using the screen keyboard I can switch in a few seconds. Do I have to go into Settings and change the language there in order to use this feature when I'm on the wireless keyboard?

When I try your solution, I can indeed get Greek, but it is modern Greek, not Ancient/Attic--thus the accent and breathing marks are not part of the keyboard. Is there a way to download or access the Polytonic Greek keyboard?
Under iOS 7 and earlier, there were separate settings for Hardware keyboards, where you could specify Polytonic Greek.  But these are gone in iOS 8, and I don't know whether there is any way to make it work.
For screen typing, you might try the app Keyman Pro, which I think has a polytonic greek keyboard.

  • Input options: Language & Keyboard Layout

I've not found a complete answer to my problem.
I live in Paris and London. I work in English and French. I write emails and texts in English and French. I do not want to switch between keyboard layouts (EN and FR) just to change the language. I dont know the FR keyboard layout and it's unreasonable to think that I should have to switch to that layout just to get french input language support (predictive typing support).
How can I use the EN layout and type in French and English. I dont mind pushing a button to switch, like my Sony Erikson, i just hold down a key and it lets me switch input languages - but doesn't change my keyboard layout.
Am I wrong to assume this is unreasonable? What options do I have ?
    thanks

I have exactly the same problem and it is driving me crazy to such an extent I am considering abandoning the iPhone; I am British but I have to write alot of messages in French and the iphone is always replacing the correct French words with British ones!
It seems that Apple has not yet understood that one can work in several languages at once; I live in Switzerland so I am only offered French versions of software and hardware on the Apple site when I want British ones - it was impossible to buy a 17 inch laptop with a British keyboard here even though there are many thousands of English speaking residents.
If you here of a solution I should be very grateful to know about it

  • Switching languages

Are there key commands I can use to switch languages? I use both chinese and english and if there a way to set up key commands to change between the two, it would be most helpful. A mouse is great but slower.
    Thanks.

Thanks! I understand the keyboard part but how do I
    find the language settings?
If you mean keyboard layouts or input methods, these are activated in system preferences/international/input menu. If you mean OS menus and dialogues language, this is determine by whatever language is at the top in system preferences/international/languages.
If you're referring to something else, let us know exactly what you are trying to do. For Chinese, this site has tons of info:

Are you perhaps accidentally hitting the keyboard shortcut for switching keyboards, Apple/command plus space?

  • In Windows 7, I have two alternative languages available. however, Firefox does not recognize the alternat keyboards when I choose them. Does Firefox have the ability to add other language keyboards to be available when selected?

Windows 7 and previous versions gives the ability to add additional keyas validboard selections to be available when selected. The command logo is located on the bottom right of the bottom command bar. I have tried several times to type emails in my Yahoo Mail program while in Firefox, and though the selection shows on the bottom bar, the keyboard is still in English. I do not wish to change the operating language. I just want to have the availability when needed.

Easiest to switch the keyboard layout is to assign a specific shortcut key to each layout (e.g. Shift+Ctrl+9)

  • Dictation does not switch language

When I hit the language icon in the menu bar, it does not switch language like my ipad does.   Is it possible that the ipad has more functionality than the mac book pro?

OS X and iOS are totally different is this area.  The language icon in OS X only changes the keyboard, nothing else.  Dictation language is set in system preferences.  But there is also an easier way

  • Switching language in BBM

How can I switch languages when typing a BBM message? From French to English for example.
The spell checker transforms English words into French, like 'the' into 'thé' (tea).
I've English-speaking contacts and French-speaking contacts and bilingual contacts. I need an easy way to swap between national languages when typing messages.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok, got it in the parameters options.
But it takes a while before the Z30 understands I want suggestions in one language or the other. The switch of keyboard doesn't seem to switch suggestions at the same time.

  • A possible solution for "foreight language keyboard shortcut" problem...

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Everyone know the problem of losy keyboard layout when Final Cut is used with foreight language keyboard. We loose the COMMAND-Q shorcut.
As PieroF suggested in many posts in final cut express forum, there is a workaround:
"+I just installed Leopard and I ran into this keyboard shortcut problem.+
    +I can confirm that:+
+a. the problem exists also with the Italian keyboard (in addition to other languages, as pointed by other posters)+
+b. the workaround I described in my previous answer works fine :+
    +- close FCE (if open)+
    +- open System Preferences/International/Language+
+- drag English to the first place on top of the other languages+
+- drag your own language (Italian in my case) again on top of English (at the end the window will show the same original settings, but something happened in the heart of Leopard...)+
    +- close System Preferences+
+- open FCE: now all shortcuts work as expected, and are correctly listed with their corresponding menu commands+
+It's a workaround, it's not convenient (I'd better have this bug fixed), but apparently you have to apply it only once for each system startup.+
    Piero "
As stated by Piero, you have to follow this procedure after each computer startup.
I found a way to restore the COMMAND-Q shortcut with the keyboard and mouse system pref panel.
Simply add Final Cut application and add a +custom shotcut+. Be careful to type exactly the "Quit Final Cut Express" menu.
This solution allows to restart the computer.
It's work with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro under Leopard 10.5.4.
    Michel Boissonneault

    Hi Michel,
I like your suggestion because the keyboard shortcuts defined in the system preferences do not require redefinition at each startup. So in theory we could define all missing/wrong shortcuts this way, and not only the cmd-Q as you suggested. Boring, but we could do it once for all.
The only problem is that I don't know how to define shortcuts for submenus, for example "Render Selection/Both": it seems system preferences allows only to define shortcuts for the menu ("Render Selection" - in this case absolutely useless) but not for the submenu.
Do you know a way ? (I looked in the help, which didn't... help).
    Piero

When the keyboard pops up, tab the Globe icon, and select the English keyboard.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 - Cursor moves by itself, types by itself, opens dashboard by itself, stops responding to keysto22000 there you go! Have switched out keyboards to no avail. Do not use wireless.

Cursor moves by itself, types by itself, opens dashboard by itself, stops responding to keysto22000 - there be a good example. Seems to like the number 2. Have switched out keyboards to no avail. Do not use wireless. Does not start immediately upon turning on computer. Everything is okay from 10 to 20 minutes, then bang. Can deattach then attach keyboard and get a few moments of quiet. All this started today.

If the same erratic behavior occurs when the external KB and mouse are completely disconnected, I think it's time for a Genius Bar appointment to have the problem diagnosed.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
You'll probably want to get the machine revved up ahead of time so it's misbehaving when you walk in the door, rather than count on it to act up — or not — after you and the Genius have been standing around waiting for a while. (BTW, I'm assuming that once it starts acting up, it continues to do so until you give up and shut it down. Is that true?)

  • Why the Unavailability of Foreign Language Keyboards in the US?

I am a foreign language student (Russian), and am trying to buy a foreign language apple keyboard (preferably wireless) in the states. I know they are available in Europe (my stepdaughter confirms she can get one thriugh her apple store), yet when I try to do the same here, they deny they even exist!! (This is the case even on the online store!!!)
I tried to order one from one of the European Stores online (actually, more than one) and it won't let me complete the order, even if I make payment in the local currency (pounds, euros, francs, rubles, or what have you).
This is a frustrating (and in my opinion, fairly serious) problem, and I am sure I am not the only one who is going through this fiasco. I certainly don't want to pay 5x the price via a "smuggler", I would rather get peripherials FOR my apple FROM apple.
So Apple, what gives? There's a market for these products here, my MacBook Pro WILL support this product... So why won't you let me buy one (or even admit to me you even have such a thing, when those overseas have free access to them)?

I do not want to get on your case, but Apple is a business, one that tries to make a profit. Carrying items in inventory that serve a tiny number of individuals in the US actually costs them money. But they'd also have to carry inventory in every single foreign language keyboard, and the costs become huge.
Moreover, and with all due respect, if you're here in the US studying, you really need a US English keyboard. And as the other poster said, you have access to the Russian character map for keys, so if you have to write home, you can write in Russian, and you'll be happy.
By the way, all of us here are users like you. Getting annoyed hardly ever gets you help. If you want to complain to Apple go here.
