Switching of displays from laptop to monitor
Is it possible when using Thuderbolt display with a laptop to switch the display seen on the laptop with the display on the supplemental monitor? Or can you only use the additional monitor as a supplement to drag from the laptop to the screen?
If your laptop supports thunderbolt then you can plug the tb monitor into it. You can run it in mirrored mode or extended display mode.
Arrangements, Menu Bar, Extended Displays, and Mirrored Displays
When you have multiple monitors only one monitor is designated as the "main" monitor. That's the one with the menu bar.
If you look at the Arrangement tab in your Displays preferences you will see both monitors. One will have a little white "menu bar" on it. That's your main monitor. You can drag the little menu bar to the other monitor if you wish to make it the main monitor.
You cannot make both monitors main monitors. However there is a third party app called MenuEverywhere that allows you to do that (it has mixed reviews).
Your two monitors can be spatially arranged with the Arrangement in Displays as well. Drag the monitors around each other to define their relationship. Then you can drag the mouse or windows across with in that "space". This is extended desktop mode and I recommend that to be able to use all the available screen real estate. However there is a checkbox in the Arrangement to run in mirrored mode. Now the two images are identical on both screens albeit the max screen size is determined by the smallest screen in the mirrored set. You would of course have the menu bar on both screens since they are mirrors of each other. But I think it's a waste of good screen real estate.

Just made the switch to iOS 7 and it now shows all of my nicknames for people instead of their first and last name. How do I change this?
I have my iPhone using nicknames and they all work except my husband's. For some reason, it displays his first and last name when all of my other contacts use nicknames. I feel like I have tried everything possible...deleting his contact and re-entering it, changed names on his contact multiple times, etc. Just doesn't make any sense. OH, and by the way, his nickname works on my iPad...go figure. Help please (cause it just flat out bugs the crap out of me!)...thanks!

How to switch screen display to projector using fn button
Just started to use an external projector via usb with my Macbook. Can anyone advise me how to switch the display from the screen to the computer. I believe it is via the Fn button......... thanks
He might have inadvertently hit a keyboard shortcut for zoom: go to System Preferences -> Universal Access and see if Zoom is turned on. If so, turn it off and it should return to normal.
If that's not it, there is another possibility: go to System Preferences -> Displays and click on Display. Check to see that the highlighted resolution is the last (highest) one; that is the native resolution; if you reduce it, everything becomes larger. -
How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?
Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.
It worked perfect for me. Maybe settings should be different for your laptops. In my case I'm using a MBP 15" with a GeForce 330M.
The monitor I have is the LG 29EA93 (21:9) @ 2560 x 1080.
Make sure you have exactly same values in Switch Res X. Special attention to "Scan rate".
You can see in the capture below that it's working
and, just in case, here you have the settings that worked for me
It might be also different for each video card...

Portege R500 - Switch view from laptop screen to LCD projector
Hello - new here, urgent request. We are having a meeting and I am using the Portege R500 for the first time with LCD Projector which is also a Toshiba.
How do I switch the view from the laptop screen to the projector screen? I thought it was Function F5 (Fn F5) but it isn't working.

Yes, you have to use the FN+F5 to switch to the external monitor or to external projector, etc
Firstly you have to connect the notebook with projector while the both devices are off.
After you have connected the projector you could power up the notebook.
Then try to switch to external projector using the FN+F5 key combination -
hi...the pc that my ipod was connected crashed and i wanted to switch it to my laptop now..the question is will i lose all my pictures and songs from my ipod if i switch PC's or is there a way to make it stay since u have icloud backup on my ipod. i really dont want to lose my pictures so plz let me know if there is a way...thank you
The iCloud backup does not include non-Tunes purchased music and photos that were synced to the iPod. The iCloud backup does not also included a few other things included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.

free programs like iFunBox with copy non-iTunes purchased music and some other things from iPod to computer. A paid program like TouchCopy is needed to copy photos synced to the iPod to a computer. -

Hi have a iq772 pc and there is no display from the monitor, dvd, power buttons seem to work ok, think this may be an inverter problem, however can't seem to work out how to dismantle the casing from the screen. Any ideas, many thanks.
How have you guys got on with your screen issues. I find it crazy that HP havent not take responsibility for this issue. There seems to be lots of people out there with the same issue. My unit is about 2 years old and is now completely useless. A.) I cant afford to spend £398 on a new motherboard and B.) If I could afford to, I would probably put it towards a new PC.

Does anybody know of any utilities available that will automatically remember my app window positions when switching from laptop to external screens?
'Stay' looks like the best solution found so far but it is not automatic Any more ideas are welcome!

Switching ExternalMonitor View from "Source Monitor" to "Program Monitor"?
This worked fine in CS6, but I switched to Premiere CC and my external monitor is displaying the contents of Premiere's "Source Monitor" only, not the "Program Monitor". When the Timeline or Program monitor is selected, the extrenal monitor is black. But slecting Source Monitor plays fine on the extrenal moitor (through SDI connection)
How do I switch to the viewing the Program Monitor signal in my external monitor instead of the Source Monitor?
Tech Setup: using Blackmagic ultrastudio mini monitor to send SDI signal. Have installed the latest driver for the Blackmagic ultrastudio, which is approved for Adobe CC. Everything works perfectly in Premiere CS6, it's an issue inside Premiere CC.

Ipod Touch - downloaded CD from laptop onto ITunes on my Ipad. Contents of CD are displayed but there is no Import button??

Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
Release the Buttons...

Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use...

Dual monitor (w/laptop): external monitor is blank.
Hi! just installed arch for the first time a day ago. Right now what I'm working on is on getting my second monitor running (mostly for development purposes... and movies ^__^).
I'm using Arch64 with the open ATI driver and KDE. Whenever I connect the external monitor, the monitor seems to detect a connection occurred (the "check video cable" message disappears when I connect it and comes back when I disconnect it), and so does KDE. When I open my display settings, it tells me a new monitor was connected and asks me if I want to configure it.
Then I choose to configure and use the two monitors giving the following screens (right now I'm at college testing with monitors in there, thus the low resolution, but behavior seems to be exactly the same):
(EDIT: resized. In case of wishing to read full images, just take the "resized/" out of the URI)
However pretty the full screenshot looks like (... I just mean that even if it looks like the second monitor is working), the monitor remains blank.
Using arandr (xrandr's gui), it is exactly the same result. I might be doing something wrong (almost certainly I am ) (EDIT: decided it was a good idea to show what I did with xrandr).
In /home/<myuser>/.xinitrc my file looks like this:

I wondered the same. I initially only used KDE for it (that's how it worked in other distros, but I'm guessing Fedora and Kubuntu have way more stuff on top). I moved to xrandr later after searching for options and I did select "Ignore" when KDE asked me to configure and just went ahead with xrandr. The same still happens.

EDIT: Adding some extra information. I tried rebooting with the CRT cable connected. When the kernel initiated its loading, the messages only appeared on the external monitor. It was afterwards (it was pretty quick, but I will assume it was when radeon's modeset hit) that the external monitor went blank again and, in that situation, the laptop's monitor went blank (so none of the two monitors worked... and I was so hopeful!)

More DIsplay Problems on HPx2301 Monitor when connected to my MacBook Pro - OSX Snow Leopard

I previously reported that the problems with my new monitor had been fixed with a change in DVI cable.
Unfortunately the fix lasted for one day. I powered off both the monitor and macbook, came back the next day and the monitor no longer detects the power book. Same is the case with an iMac and an old mac-mini. My external older Viewsonic (connected also via the same DVI cable) has no problems.
When the monitor is connected to the macbook, the macbook detects it and acts like it has dual screens - the System Preferences>Display app shows both monitors (and allows me to change resolution of the HP. Dispite this, the Monitor cannot detect a signal from the Mac.
Looks like a defective Monitor - will be contacting HP in the morning.
Also of note is that the included Documentation describes 6 control buttons on the base of the unit, including an Auto Adjust button for the user to " Press to activate the auto adjustment feature to optimize the screen image." Unfortunately, there are only 5 control buttons - there is no Auto Adjust button.
The documentation makes no mention of OSX, although it appears that drivers for the monitor have been included in the OSX distributions.I'm back up - now using HP to mirror laptop screen. Got replacement DVI cable from HP, plugged it in an Monitor is working (again). So I have 3 seemingly identical cables - 2 supplied by HP, and one an older one I used with a Viewsonic DVI monitor.
1) The cable that shipped with the Monitor never worked,
2) The older cable worked for one day with the HP, then stopped working on the HP monitor, but worked with the older VIewsonic monitor,
3) The replacement cable from HP that is working currently.
I believe they are all DVI-i - pins appear to be identical on all three.
So I don't think its a settings or cable type issue. I suspect that the HP may have some circuitry that makes it very persnickity when it comes to signal detection - so perhaps there's some small variation is signal quality btween cables - not sure how to check that though.
We shall see if the cable 3 works for extended period. -
Static displays only on main monitor
I have a brand new 2.93 GHz 6 Core Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphic card with three 30" Apple Cinema displays connected (using Apples Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapters).
On a several occasions the monitor (bought about a month ago) designated as the main (by the menu bar) has flickered a few times and then that monitor fills with static... I can still see the desktop through the static, the mouse and keyboard works fine on the monitor, after a several minutes the static flickers out and that monitor is back to normal, or if I put the monitors to sleep that monitor will return to normal.... the other two monitors remain static free during these incidents... I have tried switching the monitors between the mini display ports and the dual-link port but I still get the static display on the monitor... I'll also try using a different monitor as main.....

Has anyone else noticed similar problem with the new Mac Pro with the ATI Radeon HD 5870?It's a bug in 10.5.6. What you should do is make export a copy of your photos that you want displayed from iPhoto to a folder. Put that folder wherever you want, probably ~/Pictures
Then tell the screen saver app to pull the images from there and it will work again on both of your displays. Very annoying.
