Switching off a T420s nVidia card from linux ? What ACPI call ?

Dear all,
I am the very happy owner of a T420s that I mostly use under Linux. Is there any simple way to switch off the nVidia card under Linux (i.e. without deactivating it in the BIOS) ?
The script proposed on https://launchpad.net/~hybrid-graphics-linux does terminate with "success", but does not switch the card off (it however deactivate the USB mouse ...)
As far as I understand, there is a magic string to write in /proc/acpi (when the module acpi_call is loaded) to do the trick, but so far I could not find it anywhere.
I suspect that Lenovo's engineers could tell what is the said string in 5min ...

I believe I have found some articles that will help you troubleshoot the issues you are seeing with your iPhone. First, in order to get your iPhone turned back on, you will want to try the steps listed in this article:

Specifically, you will want to try this:
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You will also probably want to hold the Sleep/Wake button and Home button for around 20 seconds just to be certain. If that doesn't affect the iPhone, you will want to refer to the steps in this article:

If iPad won't turn on, or the display stops responding
Follow these steps, testing after each:
1. Turn the iPad off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPad for a few seconds, until a red slider appears. Then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
2. Reset iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If your issue persists after following the above steps, try to restore your iPad with iTunes. If you are unable to restore it, use recovery mode.

Switching the x-fi fatal1ty card from an XP system to a vista 64 bit sys

I just recently purchased a new computer system that has vista 64 bit. I want to use my x-fi fatalty sound card in this new system. The card use to be in an old XP system (home edition). I can't seem to be able to download any drivers for it from the creative website. It gives me the message that there are no new updates. I also tried to select other operating systems and I got the same message. Can anyone tell what I need to do to download drivers to run this thing on my vista 64 bit system?

I went to the link you sent me and the creative web page says that windows vista I emailed creative and they responded back with the link to download the x-fi fatality pro drivers for vista 64 (not sure why I couldn't find from their website it on my own). Here it is:

So far it seems to be working. I've listened to internet music and it sounds the same as my previous xp system. I still have to test it in gaming. You do not get the fancy gui though. you have to order a vista install. CD for that. However, you still get a console application that lets you set everything you normally would with the fancy gui. You can get the vista install. CD free (+shipping ~$5) from creative. The link to order that is below. Good luck.

Not sure what you are saying. I was able to very quickly set up my AmEx card - no problems at all. For my PNC and Macy's cards, companies still working on being ApplePay-ready.
It will happen, just not as fast as we might like, but I think it is going to be fabulous.

T420 + nvidia 4200M questions

My laptop just arrived today and I love it! I got the dedicated graphics card because I thought it would help in Photoshop and other photo/video editing programs. Other than that, I know very little about GPU's. Confusion is added because not only am I dealing with NVIDIA, but also the Intel HD graphics. Here's what I understand (or I think I understand): the NVIDIA is only "activated" during extensive graphics applications while the Intel does most of the work during basic programs. But where do I go for the settings? Intel or NVIDIA? I am assuming NVIDIA....but there, I am at a complete loss as to how to configure it. What are "global settings?" And I've read so much about Optimus technology, yet I don't see it anywhere. And how do I know the GPU is doing work?

You have Optimus. It works by default. What it does is essentially that it runs everything off of the iGPU. When a window needs more graphics performance, it will generally figure that out and then almost instantly turn on the nVidia chip run that window (and only the contents of that window) with the nVidia chip. As soon as you close the window, the system goes back to running everything off of the iGPU. Optimus is better than switchable graphics because it switches almost instantly and only runs what you need off of the nVidia card. The very minor downside to Optimus is that is uses a small amount of RAM at all times (about 128MB) if you need the extra RAM you can configure the BIOS to disable Optimus autodetect and then choose the integrated graphics only (slower, better thermals, and battery life) or the nVidia graphics only (faster, more heat, about 50-60% of normal battery life). I think ~128MB less of usable RAM is worth all that you gain from Optimus -- RAM is inexpensive compared to batteries.
Some programs, such as independent games, might not auto detect. For those, I will use the right click --> run with Graphics Processor solution to make them perform better. You can add these programs to the list so that they always run with a specific processor. nVidia's latest drivers include a task bar utility that tells you when the nVidia chip is on, and which window or program is using it. If you were running low on battery, you could right click and run a program only on the integrated to attempt to extend battery life.
The other nice thing about having the nVidia card is that you can drive 3 displays at once. For me, this means the ability to use 2 external monitors and the laptop display at the same time.

PRE9 No longer supports older nvidia card GPU's (?)

I've started this new discussion rather than continuing GPU Effects in PRE7 but not in PRE9 as this focuses more on the cards rather than the effects. In this discussion I hope that users with nvidia cards could report what their card is, and whether or not GPU Effects/Transitions show.
My nvidia 8800GT performs exceptionally well with PRE7.
Scrubbing along the timeline, or changing timeline scaling results in almost instantaneous redrawing of thumbnails.
All GPU effects and transitions are available and work well.
But with PRE9:

It seems to me that PRE9 is either no longer supporting older cards, or is identifying cards incorrectly. My gut feel is the first - that PRE9 is only working with *specific* video cards.

I could not find graphics cards listed in Adobe Premiere Elements 9: System requirements. But I did find this on the Premiere Pro CS5 System Requirements:

It does make me wonder if PRE9 follows this restricted list of cards.
Another clue(?) is that the Adobe Knowledge Base 51526, Troubleshoot digital video playback, shows:
3. Switch the GPU playback option.
Note: This option is not present in Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0.
Adobe Premiere Elements is designed to take advantage of display
cards with accelerated GPUs. If you are having playback issues, make
sure you use the correct GPU playback mode that corresponds with your
display card.
Enable GPU Playback: The setting if you have a GPU-accelerated display card.
Disable GPU Playback:The setting offers the lowest performance but
is appropriate for display cards that do not fully support Direct 3D
So the feature to manually describe your card to PRE9 *HAS* been deliberately removed, by inference leaving it totally to the application to decide whether or not your card is supported.

No, and it doesn't support some new cards in particular configurations either.
The main ones affected are the laptop hybrids in Sony Vaio. I have a Sony Vaio Z11, and the Z12 and Z13 are affected by exactly the same problem.
The nVidia video card is GT330M, which should support all sorts of things. But the most recent driver that works in this hybrid configuration (the way it is set up by Sony) is 190.xx, which presumably doesn't support this.
So PRE9 loads with an error message, but I can't see anything in the video preview, which makes editing a little difficult. It works fine in Sony Vegas though.
Sony Vaio with the auto-switching hybrid configurations are fairly common (they've sold well), and the Z11, Z12 and Z13 are a current and very powerful model (mine is Core-i7, 8GB RAM, SSD). It is a laptop that looks good, so appeals to graphic artists and video editors.
Adobe possibly needs to fix this rather quickly, because there are complaints all over the forums and I can see a lot of people dropping Adobe Premiere Elements in favour of the Sony Vegas product simply because they can't make it work. All it takes is the ability to switch OFF GPU processing! Alternatively support for this card.

Two nVidia cards in 1 Desktop?

I just received my Envy Phoenix 800-170st with the nVidia GeForce GTX645 card. I would like to take the older nVidia card from my HP 8300 (11/2009) and install it in the 800-170st in the second PCI-E slot just above the GTX645 card so that I can run 2 HP monitors using the DVI port on each card.
This appears to be possible with the hardware, but are there any caveats or issues that I should consider before doing this ... heat, power, etc?
I am currently running the second monitor off of the HDMI port on the GTX645, but would like to use DVI for both monitors. The monitors are HP 27xi (new) and HP2709 which came with the 8300.

As long as the card that you have is compatible with the motherboard, expansion slots, and processor of your new computer. You should have no issue with compatibility. I have included the 'HP ENVY Phoenix 810-170st Product Specifications and Configurable Options'.
For the making sure that you are using the correct power, please make sure that the power requirement for the other graphics card does not put you over the Power output wattage. This information is also included in the specifications.

Nowadays everyone knows about the App Find my iPhone, so the at moment they steal it they can immediately switch off the Find my iPhone from the settings. and then what? it happened to a friend and at once his iPhone disappeared from the list of devices. what now? is there any other way to try to find his iPhone?

You can prevent someone from turning off the Find My iPhone service by using restrictions (in settings). But a thief can easily keep the phone turned off or pull out the sim card to prevent sensing its location. It's been said here before, the service is more apt for finding a lost device, not a stolen one.

IOS6 - the DND service will not switch off

updated to IOS 6 yesterday, switched the Do not disturb button on and then off again,
