Switching over from pc to mac and need help!

Ok so I plan on getting the new imac they are revealing today, but I'm not completely sure how to transfer all my music over from the pc and how the iPhone will sync as I've heard that the mac didn't recognize the iPhone after it had already been synced with a pc. I was just going to buy an external hd for the music and other things, but I really don't want to spend $100 plus for something that is only for transfer and some backup. I was considering burning cd's as well as I only have about a 250 song library and many blank cd's. Which choice or other option would be best? As for the not recognizing problem, is there something I have to do to like "format" it for mac and a feature I need to set up on the mac? Any help is appreciated.

The iPhone will show up on both a Windows-based PC and a Mac without needing to be reformated. From the File Menu in iTunes you can choose to sync your purchased music back to the computer.
In addition the Apple Retail Stores offer a service to move your files over.
You can burn approximately 150-200 songs per CD as a Data CD in iTunes, and import from there if you would like. You can set the CD Burning preference in iTunes in Windows by going to the Edit Menu, Preferences, Advanced Tab, then the burning section. Choose the option for "Data CD"

Log in on iCloud.com and go to Mail. In Mail, at the bottom left you should see a gear icon. Click on it, go to Settings (or Preferences, I'm doing this from memory), and in there you'll find an option to forward your iCloud email to another service.

Switching over from PC to Mac

I am at the stage where I need to upgrade my notebook. I am looking at a Mac because of all the multi-media capabilities that come with Mac, but I will still need to function in the MS world. Any comments on running MS Office on a Mac? Can I run both the Apple software & the MS software on the Mac at the same time? I need some help to decide what to do.

This is really an area to discuss the functioning of the discussion site as a whole rather than specific technical questions relating to hardware or software. There are discussion areas for each of the Mac systems you may be interested in buying - just go to http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa?categoryID=1 and click the link under Computing Hardware for the system you are contemplating.
But, to get you going - there is a version of MS Office written specifically for Mac, and which is functionally fully compatible with the PC version for the purpose of transporting files. It is not in 'Universal' format yet, meaning that on any of the current Intel-based Macs, it will run under Rosetta - a form of on-the-fly translator. In my experience it works just fine like that, but a universal binary of the latest version of Office is due (according to MS) next year and which should run very smartly indeed.
On the current Intel-based Macs it would also be possible to run the PC version of Office under Windows. There are two ways to go about this - Boot camp, which allows the Mac to be booted to EITHER MacOS or Windows at startup (but not run both simultaneously), and Parallels, which allows you to run Windows in a Window within MacOS and transfer files between. In either instance you would need to have a copy of Windows to install, and of course the Windows install would be susceptible to all the usual malware and security issues.
All in all, I would personally go for the Mac version of Office.

I need to play a DVD that was created on a microsoft machine on my Mac and need help finding the right converter software.

I have received a "Data DVD" that was made on a windows machine and need to play it on my mac but am having trouble finding the right player or converter.I would like a free application if possible. Thank You,JerryStephen:-)

I think I understand now. The DVD has an auto start player (exe) that steps through the video's, html, whatever. Your gonna need windows or you'll be forced to look at the individual pieces seperately. Html's you can open, idx files are subtitles, the video format is avi I'm guessing or maybe wma.
Try this first, get the VLC player from video_lan. It's a great tool to have in your toolbox. It should play the video files at least (including subtitles). VLC can play almost any format.

New to the wonderful world of mac and need help

I am using a powermac G4 quicksilver with a 933 MHz processor 768 mb of ram and I'm running OSX 10.5.7 the problem I am having is that when I go online to play simple flash games they run incredibly slow. I got this mac from a friends father and don't know much about macs, is this a memory problem, a video card problem or a processor problem? I was a Pc user for years so the few things I have tried like putting a different video card probably not compatible in it, new memory probably not compatible in it and i can't find much info on this particular mac, please help!

Hi! Download MACTRACKER to learn more about various Mac models. The database has good info. You can put 3 -512 mb sticks in it for a total of 1.5gigs of ram fairly easily. 933 mhz isn't real fast and it would probably be faster running Tiger instead of Leo. Also make sure you have 10-20 gigs of free hard drive space because anything less will slow it to a crawl. Tom

New to Macs and need help with communication error in video chat

Hello! I have the same problem with video chatting that many others are having with errors -7 and -8. I am brand new to macs, and while I understand what the other threads are talking about about changing ports and settings, I don't exactly know how to do those things on my new system (iMac with OS X tiger 10.4.8). My quicktime settings are set to 1.5 and my iChat port is changed to 443. I have been able to connect with one person via iChat video on a different network, but I was given the above errors when I tried to connect with someone else tonight. I am using my built in airport with a Lynksys WRT54G broadband router. Please let me know how I can go about fixing this problem. Thank you!

If you are trying to connect to your ISP e-mail account. The ISP will help you setup and connect to your e-mail account. So, you might want to give them a call.
Usually, when you are told that you can't use the server it means that there might be an error (either a wrong name/ address / password/ connection type/ etc.) so check your settings again...

Getting camcorder video on iTouch? I have a PC, not a Mac and need help

I am getting my wife the 32GB iTouch for XMAS and hope to be able to get some of our video footage of our 15 month old on her iTouch. The video was taken in AVCHD format (highest resolution) on my Canon HG10 camcorder. Video support for the camcorder is as follows:

I also have many JPEGs in 10 megapixel resolution taken with my Canon Powershot G7 camera.
Because i have a PC (Sony Vaio), will I be able to get the camcorder video and camera pics onto my wife's iTouch? I assume I may also need to downconvert the video resolution from the 1920 * 1080 HD high res fomrat. What software or conversion device will I need? Someone mentioned a free shareware converter called "Super" (just Google "super") which might help???

Hi John,
It really is pretty easy. The Ipod touch won't take the highest resolution, which is why it needs conversion. I also have an XP machine, and the easiest way to get home movies into iTunes is to pull them up from "my documents" and open the file, selecting iTunes or QuickTime as the player. Either option will open your itunes library and put the file there. My computer allways complains for a minute when I do this, but it settles down and does it just fine. When it starts to play, stop the video and it will be in "movies" in your iTunes library. Now you're ready to click on the advanced tab and convert. For converting high def video, be aware this may take awhile. It is worth it though-I love watching my home movies on the touch. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

Recently purchased Mac and need help with iTunes

I recently purchased a Mac (I had Toshiba and used Windows) and went to add new songs to my iPod on my iPhone. I logged onto my iTunes account, but cannot figure out how to get my new songs that I downloaded onto my iphone. It keeps bringing up to replace my Library, which I figure will delete all the songs I already have. How can I get my iTunes Library on my account from my Toshiba to my Mac so I can add new songs?

The Apple Store will transfer everything from your pc to your new Mac, or you can call Apple support and they will help you move everything, or you can type "move itunes library from pc to mac" into the google search bar.

Just switched from pc to mac and need to install Lightroom 4. Can't seem to find the link on Adobe website.

When i switch over from PC to Mac?

i have an external hard drive i back all my files up with.
When i finally get my MacBook Pro or Mac Pro to migrate over is there a "wizard" of some type?
Also does the hard drive need to be formatted Fat32 or will OSX read the NTFS?

You will need to use 3rd party software or just drag document files over. The only "wizard" works with OS X volumes.
OS X can read FAT32 and NTFS but it can't write to NTFS without 3rd party drivers or software. MacFuse and MacDrive are two I can think of.
If you ever want to boot from your external, it needs to be formatted to Mac OS Extended (HFS+) and the drive needs to use "GUID Partition Table" rather than Master Boot Record. Disk Utility: Partitions -> Options... is how you change partition tables and reformat.
You might want to have a 2nd backup - I find two is minimum - and keep one as is, and later have rotating backup sets with one set always off line.
If there was one program to use for backups and synchronizing, I would start with free/shareware and excellent Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0b4.

You need to configure the router first as per the ISP settings.
Open the set up page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer Browser and type the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin and click on ok.On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone""... Click on enable>>>Click Clone & click save settings ...Check WAN Ip on Status page of router .... If getting Valid Ip .... try going online...If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the WAN Ip address ..... and try to go Online.

Switching iTunes from PC to Mac guidance needed

I'm new to the world of Apple computers with the exception of the iPhone. Just two weeks ago I purchased a new 27" iMac, and now I need to transfer my iTunes music and library from my old WinXP computer.
I plan to locate my music on an external 500GB drive connected via USB 2.0. The library I need to transfer from the WinXP computer currently contains 60,349 mp3 and podcast files in approximately 416GB of space. From what I have learned on my own so far has indicated that I need to format the external drive on the iMac since NTFS will not work properly. I can transfer the files via my LAN.
Almost 70% of my library is rare vinyl and tracks that I manually added the album artwork for. I need to know how to transfer this entire library from the PC to this iMAc so I maintain my album artwork, my playlists, my iPhone apps, and my podcast structure.
Any recommendations for this process, or should I call support to have them help me do this?
