Switching to Apple

Hi,
My wife and I are considering switching to a Mac (having lived with Windows and Linux).
My impression is that a Mac has everything a consumer needs out of the box, the hardware and software are developed by the same company and the various software packages offer good (if not perfect) integration between each other. The decision to go to a Mac is mostly based on the very positive experience I have had with my 1st Gen iPhone.
We will be mostly using it to manage and perform basic edits of photos in iPhoto '09, manage music in iTunes, convert video for use on iPhone/PS3 using QT Pro, create documents in Pages '09 and keep track of finances in Numbers '09. In future we plan to manage and perform basic edits of hi-def video in iMovie '09+ and record and collaborate on music projects with my band using GarageBand '09+.
For this, we are opting for an iMac and at present, we are considering the 2.66GHz model. We would ideally like the Macbook Pro, but we can't justify the £400-£500 premium for portability and a battery.
I have read some recent rumours of a possible hardware refresh of the range that might include Quad-Core processors. I have a few questions:
1) If we bought a Dual-Core (DC) iMac now, would we be able to upgrade to a Quad-Core (QC) chip at a later date? Either DIY or at an Apple store?
2) I have read that OpenCL (in Snow Leopard) will allow developers to utilise the additional processing power of the nVidia GPUs for general processing tasks. Does this also apply to the ATI GPUs in current-gen iMacs?
3) When Apple refresh their hardware, is there usually a price hike? In other words, if a DC iMac currently costs £1000, is it reasonable to expect that a QC iMac would be the same price when it's released?
4) How 'well' does the 2.66GHz iMac currently perform the tasks that I've mentioned above? (Specifically the video editing and conversion tasks). I don't mind leaving the iMac to convert/import/export video projects over night etc. but I'd like the interface to be quick and responsive when I'm being 'creative'.
5) When Grand Central is released with Snow Leopard, should I expect an immediate improvement in performance on the dual-core CPU/ATI GPU architecture?
6) What about if the architecture was refreshed to quad-core CPU/nVidia GPU?
Just doing my research and want to gauge the opinion of present Apple users on the above issues.
Many thanks,
Glyn

Hi GlynC:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
You will get lots of feedback here - this is the best on-line community anywhere. One caution, a lot of people are like me - Apple through and through. I used both Apple and Windows based computing when I was in the work-a-day world. When I spent my own money, I have opted for Apple for about 15 years and have no regrets.
Now to your questions:
1) If we bought a Dual-Core (DC) iMac now, would we be able to upgrade to a Quad-Core (QC) chip at a later date? Either DIY or at an Apple store? +Speculation, as note below, on future Apple products, is not permitted under the terms of use of these forums.+
2) I have read that OpenCL (in Snow Leopard) will allow developers to utilise the additional processing power of the nVidia GPUs for general processing tasks. Does this also apply to the ATI GPUs in current-gen iMacs? +I do not know - I do not write code.+
3) When Apple refresh their hardware, is there usually a price hike? In other words, if a DC iMac currently costs £1000, is it reasonable to expect that a QC iMac would be the same price when it's released? +At the risk of sounding legalistic, speculating on future Apple plans is strictly against the terms of use of these forums. You can look at history and Apple, like most technology developers, has delivered more capability as new products are released (at prices similar to previous generation products).+
+At the risk of using a platitude, 'performance' is in the eyes of the beholder. I have two iMacs, an older G5 and this one - with an Intel-based 2.4 Ghz processor. Both are quite fast enough for my uses, although the newer one is substantially faster when doing comparable computing. I use iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie a bit - not much.+
5) When Grand Central is released with Snow Leopard, should I expect an immediate improvement in performance on the dual-core CPU/ATI GPU architecture? +See my comment about speculation above. Incidentally, if I did speculate, the post would be removed by a host.+
6) What about if the architecture was refreshed to quad-core CPU/nVidia GPU? Ditto.
Barry
P.S. I am sorry I could not address your questions about future Apple plans (even if I have an opinion). There are other web sites that engage in that sort of speculation. However, Apple is notoriously close-hold on future plans so I take any speculation about Apple plans with a grain of salt.

how do I switch my apple Id I use in the iTunes store to the one I have on iCloud?

You can simply sign out and sign in with the different ID. However, if you have any protected media - movies, or songs purchased before they stopped protecting them - you will not be able to play them, so in that case you are rather stuck.
You can't merge accounts or transfer iTunes purchases from one Apple ID to another: but there is no problem about using two IDs. Use your iCloud ID for iCloud for syncing email, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and PhotoStream; use your other Apple ID as before for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match.
There's no conflict about doing this, and you won't even notice as Keychain will log you in with the correct ID in each case. It's also better security not to have your iTunes login also your email address, given the number of complaints about hacked iTunes accounts.

  • Switching to Apple - A Sorry Tale

After many years as a PC user I recently decided to give the Apple experience a try and purchased a 20 Inch Intel iMac.
I eagerly received the machine on Tuesday 31st January to find with great disappointment that it would not boot up. On pressing the power button all I got was a solid white light in the bottom right hand corner. Eventually, after about an hour of powering off and on again with the keyboard and mouse in various configurations, the machine suddenly sprung to life.
Things then appeared to go OK for the next couple of hours until I made the seemingly innocent mistake of leaving the machine alone for a short period. Upon my return I found that the keyboard and mouse no longer functioned.
After some more frustrated experimenting, I discovered that I could temporarily fix this problem by unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in again.
At this point I started to search the Apple forums to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problems. I was not really surprised to find several threads mentioning the keyboard issue.
On further investigation, I found the same errors in my system log that other users have experienced and also found (at a cost of about $35) that my keyboard was to blame. I picked up a new one and all of the system log errors and lockups went away.
I should mention that before I went out and spent money on the keyboard I discussed that matter with Apple support. They informed me that I could take the whole machine in to a local Apple store for investigation. If they found the keyboard to be faulty then they would replace it for me. Unfortunately this would have been very inconvenient for me and so I just bit the bullet and bought a new one
Over the course of the next few days I had many more problems with the machine not booting up, both from cold starts and from sleep mode. Again, I searched the forums and found other users with similar problems but unfortunately a solution was not forthcoming and so it was back on the line to Apple support.
A few conversations with them later and after trying many of the experiments detailed elsewhere on the forums it was determined that my machine was faulty and needed to be replaced. The options given to me were: (a) return the machine to the retailer (amazon) for a refund, (b) take the machine into an Apple store for repair or (c) return the machine to Apple for a replacement.
Since I actually still wanted the machine at this stage (a) was not really an option. I was not satisfied with (b) either, since this is a brand new machine I do not want it repaired, so I opted for (c). I was then told that I would be emailed fedex labels within a couple of days to allow me to return the machine. This was on the 4th February.
Two days passed and there was no sign of the fedex labels so I called Apple support once again to see what was going on. The original person I was dealing with wasn’t available and so my case was transferred to another product specialist who said that he would escalate my case as I had already been put to a lot of inconvenience. Once again I was assured that the labels would be with me in the next day or two.
Yet again they failed to materialise and so I tried to call my new contact. After several failed attempts to speak with him I left some phone messages and also sent a couple of emails expressing my concern over the situation and requesting that he contact me as a matter of urgency. He did not return my calls or answer the emails.
Fast forward to yesterday, 13th February, and I call Apple support again and this time, I end up having to speak to yet another case specialist. After going through the usual 15 minutes of recapping the situation I am told that he has no idea what is going on and he is about to leave work for a couple of days. He does however promise to email everyone who has been involved at Apple so far to try and elicit some kind of response. Needless to say, it didn’t work.
So here I am, 15 days after receiving my machine, 10 days after Apple determined that my machine needed to be replaced, $35 out of pocket, having spent countless hours on support forums, waiting on hold, having the same conversations over and over again with different case specialists and I still have not even received the fedex labels to return the faulty machine, never mind receiving a replacement!
This is my experience of switching to Apple so far. Think different indeed.
iMac (intel 20 Inch)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Your experience is most unusual, so I too urge you to hang in there. Note that new machines get automatic support, even from external shops that are Apple certified. User groups often recommend going there first because they do their own repairs instead of shipping the machine out like Apple stores do. Some repairs are only an hour so you can get your machine back after waiting at the shop.
I have a new Intel iMac and have had no hardware problems at all. But do keep in touch with online forums. Remember that if 20 people report a problem there can be hundreds or more who do not have a problem (and so do not report anything) so do not be misled by the number of postings. Consumer Reports canvasses all types of users and Apple comes out on top every time for service and customer satisfaction. I think you just got some, er, Bad Apples

And check forums for info on OS updates before you update. Some have their own glitches that might be more important to you than the issues they fix. Versiontracker is good for that info.

I had an old account for my apple I.D and the email that i had expired, so I switched my apple I.D as my recent gmail, but it still asks me for my old apple I.D and password, what do I do?

Go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

Zemoj, if you have an Apple Retail Store, they can test your battery. It sounds like you battery is at the end of its life.
Mikewood25. Check for security software blocking iTunes from communicating with your iPhone. Sometimes you have to remove the security software completely—shutting it off doesn't do the job.

  • How do I switch which Apple ID is associated with?

I already know that I need to go into settings and click store to switch the apple ID, but every time I go in there, the button is grayed-out so that I can't click on it. Help?

That means yo have to go to Settings>General>Restrictions and unset the Restrictions that prevent changing accounts. You have to enter the passcode that was set in order to access Restrictions to make that change.

  • Delaying when switching between apple mail and safari

    just on mavericks.
it more or less looks and feel ok but...
when I switch between apple mail and safari, everything "freezes" for some seconds (up to 30).
    anyone similar experiences?
what could be the cause of that?
    its really disturbing.

I am a little puzzled by the libraries and switching between the libraries. My personal computer has the majority of the movies and content that would be transfered to the appletv. I chose to only select a minimal amount of content (of movies and tv shows, music via playlists) so there would be space left that would hold photos. Also, i just want to send over only what I want to view (manual synch) If I switch to my Kids library, it streams all the content well (movies & tv shows)(which is fine and streams well) If I switch back to my library, it shows every movie, every tv show, hundreds of music playlist that I did not choose to see. (stream mode) The only fix is to reboot the computer, and all is well. anyone experience this issue?

The simplest way to exit out of DFU mode is to hold down the Home and sleep/power buttons on the iPhone while connected to iTunes. Then just hit the power button as and this should reboot the device as usual.

  • HT202879 I am switching to Apple macbook pro from Windows laptop.  Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?  How can I transport from Windows to Mac?  What I have saved on external hardrives, will I be able to open it on Mac?

I am switching to Apple macbook pro from Windows laptop.  Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?  How can I transport from Windows to Mac?  What I have saved on external hardrives, will I be able to open it on Mac?

Office for Mac, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products, can open/edit/create Office documents. If your external drive is formatted NTFS then you can copy the Office documents to your computer and work on them. You won't be able to save the files back to your NTFS formatted drive. But you will be able to save the documents to your internal drive. You can move all the external files to your internal drive then format the external drive for Apple. Then you can copy the files back to your external drive for ongoing use.

I am switching to Apple macbook pro from Windows laptop.  Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?  How can I transport from Windows to Mac?  What I have saved on external hardrives, will I be able to open it on Mac?

Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?
Any computer is compatible as long as it can read and write Office files. But for perfect (or at least near perfect) compatibility, you would want to purchase Office 2011 for Mac.
How can I transport from Windows to Mac?
You can't directly transport any installation of Windows. All PC's come with a machine specific version of Windows intended for that PC. They don't have all of the hardware drivers the retail disks cover.
If you want Windows on your Mac, you would first purchase a full version copy (NOT an upgrade disk) of Windows 7 or 8. Those are the only supported versions on newer Macs. You install it through the supplied Boot Camp utility that comes with the Mac to create a new partition for Windows, and then install the retail copy of Windows you purchased.
The reason only these versions of Windows are supported is the same basic reason as a machine specific version of Windows for a PC. Apple only includes the necessary Mac hardware drivers for Win 7 or 8 on new Macs.
Once Windows is installed, you could then install the version of Office for Windows you already own. The nuisance of a Boot Camp partition is that you have to physically boot to either Windows or OS X, so you can only use the apps of the OS you're in at the time. To use both at once, you'd have to use virtual machine software (Parallels, VMware, VirtualBox) and then install Windows within that. Then you'd be able to run Windows inside of OS X and have access to both at the same time.

  • Automatic graphic switch via Apple Script

    hi community,
I would like to change the "Automatic graphics switching" (tick on / tick off) via an Apple Script. I made the following script and it works, except with line "click chckbox 2". Here it ticks the box "Show battery status in menu bar". With "click checkbox 1" it takes the "Lock-Button".
I would be glad if anybode could tell me the right code for ticking the checkbox "automatic graphics switching" via Apple Script.
    Thanks a lot
PS: Yes I know that tool gfx Status, but I wanna do this via Apple Script.
    tell application "System Preferences"
      activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.energysaver"
              delay 0.5
              tell application "System Events"
                        tell process "Systemeinstellungen"

    Hello
You may try this. It works with MacBook Pro 2010 under 10.6.5.
    tell application "System Preferences"
set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preference.energysaver"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
        tell process "System Preferences"
            tell window 1
tell group 1 -- automatic graphics switching
tell checkbox 1 -- automatic graphics switching

                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
    end tell
And the script below will set the option to the specified value.
    set_automatic_graphics_switching(0)
    on set_automatic_graphics_switching(i)
integer i : status of automatic graphics switching
                0 : off (unchecked)
                1 : on    (checked)
        if i is not in {0, 1} then error "Invalid argument: " & i number 8000
        tell application "System Preferences"
            set _was_running to running
set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preference.energysaver"
        end tell
        tell application "System Events"
            tell process "System Preferences"
                tell window 1
tell group 1 -- automatic graphics switching
tell checkbox 1 -- automatic graphics switching
if value ≠ i then click
                        end tell
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        if not _was_running then
tell application "System Preferences" to quit
        end if
    end set_automatic_graphics_switching
    Hope this may help,

How have you tried to do it ? You should be able to remove the email address as being the rescue email address by logging into your account on http://appleid.apple.com, selecting the 'password and security' section of your account, and answering the two security questions - then try logging out of that site and then log back in and see if you can put that email address as your primary email address. If you can you should be able to put your current primary email address as your new rescue email address

  • Is there a way Apple can switch my Apple ID?

I heard me.com will be going away.  So I asked Apple if it's possible to switch my apple ID on my Iphone to something other than me.com.  Also to transfer all the personal stuff (credit card purchases, address, etc.).  They said no.  Will this be possible some day in the future?  Or am I stuck with the me.com account and not be able to see my purchases/receipts?
    Thanks.

Somehow I ended up with 3 different Appleids which causes me headaches with the iTunes store, syncing, logging in, etc. etc. I never wanted multiple ids but in two situations Apple forced me to create a new one to continue (mobileme & gamecenter). Customers have been asking for a way to consolidate these Appleids for years so I don't think they'll do anything about it. But, I'd like to go on record as asking for this.
The solution is easy: have customers prove which ids belong to them, have them select the one they want, import associated information with the unwanted ones, and then delete them. I cannot fathom why this isn't a higher priority for Apple.
