Switching to ethernet freezes OSX

Howdy-
When I go from using Airport to plugging in to my ethernet cable for more stable internet, my computer freezes.
iChat logs out, and on an attempt to log back in, freezes. From there, everything goes to **** and I have to do just shut it off and turn it back on again.
Any ideas about this?

Yes - don't do it
Although in theory there should be a seamless transition from use of one network interface to another while connecting to the same network, the reality is that some applications won't successfully tolerate the transition. Internet access should transfer seamlessly, but applications like iChat may not. You could try to just shut down applications like iChat prior to the transfer, make the transition, then start up these applications again after the transition, thus avoiding having to do a complete reboot of the Mac.

  • Switching to ethernet during backup?

I'm trying to back up my iMac to Time Capsule and it is taking forever over WiFi.  Is it possible to switch to ethernet without interrupting the backup?  I'd do it, but it's been going for 6 hours and I really don't want to make the switch if it means I have to start over.
On a related note--is Apple ever going to make a Time Capsule with a Lightning port?

Better to leave things as they are since the backup has already started.
What is the estimated time remaining over wireless?
Hopefully, the iMac and Time Capsule are close together.
You can expect about 30 GB per hour to transfer using a wired Ethernet connection. So, if you have 150 GB to back up, the process will take about 5 hours.
Depending on how much more you have to backup over wireless, you may decide it is best to stop the wireless and start over using Ethernet.  Time Machine is supposed to pick up where it left off....but I have found that this does not always work.
On a related note--is Apple ever going to make a Time Capsule with a Lightning port?
A question that none of us here can answer since we are all users, just like you.  We have no idea what a notoriously secretive company like Apple might do, or when they might do it.

  • Gigabit Ethernet Freeze on OSX Install

When doing a fresh install of OS 9.2 and OSX 10.1.3, I have come across some issues. Most recently, I installed OS 9.2 and when trying to update to OSX 10.1.3, it freezes on the startup screen. There is a picture of a smiley-faced mac and a spinning beach ball in the corner, soon after startup freezes. Should I install 10.1.3 and install 9.2 afterwards? Or is there any other routes I can follow? Any help is appreciated.

All MMD's came with 1000 meg per second ethernet port.
Your average high end cable modem is only capable of 6 megs persecond download and 800K upload. So an old 10Base is all anyone needs. Now if you worked at some fancy law firm that had T4 connections....you could go as fast as 200 meegabites per second.
If you want to find out how fast your connected..go to
    www.internetfrog.com and test your speed.
Anyway...the answer is NO...you cannot boost your speed by replaycing the port.

  • Switching to Chinese input crash/freeze OSX Lion

Just upgrade MacBook Pro 13 early 2010 from Snow Lepoard to Lion.  Now everytime I switch from English to Chinese (Zhuyin), the whole system become freeze.  Nothing works, not even force quit.   I need to press and hold the power botton to restart the computer.
I did "repair permission" and "verify disk", it found nothing wrong.  I am reinstall the Lion now.  Anything I should try if reinstalling fails?
    TIA

Solved.. I let it sit for a few minutes.. let the wheel spin for awhile,   now it works fine.

  • What usb auto switch is compatible with OSX and Windows for sharing the same printer

I just bought a new iMac for myself to replace my old Dell PC.  My husband still has his PC with Windows Vista and our work stations are set up to share the same MFC with a Belkin auto switch.   Unfortunately that software is not compatible with my OSX and I am having trouble searching for another auto switch that is compatible with both computer operating systems.  Can anyone recommend one to me?

Hmmm, we bought a brand new V300 from Epson and hooked it up it didn't work. We went through all the steps, downloaded all the drivers, and after several days of frustration, it still did not work so we returned it.
Apple hasn't been able to give us technical advice, Epson couldn't help. The only scanners sold locally are the printer/scanner combos.
I was looking at the Fujitso ScanSnap 1500M earlier tonight... am wondering if I can get by with this scanner since most of my scanning nowadays has to do with business documents. It sure would be nice to organize clutter and the text said something about compatible with the "cloud" as well.
I use my iPad all the time to show galleries & collectors the quality of my paintings... type up proposals, etc. Thanks for letting me know about it's compatibility with my iPad, iPhone and Mac.
Thank you for your input, AppleMan1958. you are wonderful.

  • Switch icloud accounts on OSX mountain lion

I would like to switch Icloud accounts on my IMac.
I'm currently using my personal icloud account, which is linked to all my personal documents and e-mail- and which is really only intended for my home, but would like to disconnect it, and start using the computer with another icloud account (which is linked to my WORK e-mail, documents).
When I got the new IMac I logged in with my persoanl icloud account (just out of habit) but I really should have used the Icloud from work.
When I now go to the Icloud tab in my system preferences to switch accounts and click "log out" the little wheel starts spinning and my computer starts running exteremely slow. Note that I'm running the 3.2 27" Imac with 16GB of ram and OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2- so I'm pretty sure my system should be more than qualified to handle such a task... (If this machine isn't - good luck to anyone with a slower model...)
The first time I tried this I left it running over night, only to find my mac was frozen the next morning- After a reboot it hadn't logged out from the icloud account.
The 2nd time I tried this, the machine kept spinning for 2 hours, only to come up with a notification that the startup disk didn't have enough resources for program files, and it suggested closing all apps and removing unnecesary files. - My machine is only about 1 month old and has about 970GB of free space...
The 3rd time I tried to log out, nothing happened at all- the wheel just kept spinning and spinning- and after 4 hours i rebooted the system, because I couldn't do anything with the machine anymore...
So here's my question: How can I log out from one icloud account, and log back in with another ( already existing account) without my machine crashing...

If you want to use two iCloud accounts, I recommend you to create another user for that Apple ID because you could have problems with your information

  • Switching from Ethernet Internet Connection to Airport Internet Connection

When I try to switch from an Ethernet connection at work to an Airport connection at home or visa versa, 9 out of 10 times it locks up my computer and I have to restart. I did not have this problem before I upgraded to Leopard.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
in the design center select the database modul, right mouse click, select configure and set the location to your new location.
You could change the original location if you first unregister it in the control center. Then it es editable - it's the better way to make changes on the connection entries.

  • Switch device wizard freezes (Palm T|X to BlackBerry Pearl)

I am trying to transfer my calendar from my Palm T|X to my new BlackBerry Pearl.  I realized I didn't have the correct version of the Palm software, so I uninstalled it and downloaded the right one.  It synced correctly with my Palm, so my calendar is correct in the Palm Desktop software.  When I open the BlackBerry Desktop Software and try to run the Switch Device Wizard, it recognizes that I have a Palm, and starts transfering.  It gets to 1435/1536 calendar events and freezes.  The program becomes non-responsive, and I've had to use the task manager to kill it several times.  I've read several similar posts, none of which ever seem to be resolved, and I'm a bit concerned.  I'd appreciate any help.

    Cami,
Unplug the BB for the first part of the Switch, and plug it back in when it asks.
And correct--Outlook is the best and most common option for organizing your BB data on the desktop and syncing back to the BB.

  • Classic Freezing & OSX Illustrator crash with error 37

Recently forced into using Tiger as the newest G5's will no longer run 10.3.9.
We use 2 classic applications, but these are freezing the whole machine at random intervals - causing the power button to be held to restart the machine (Tiger completely unresponsive)
Illustrator 10.0.3 (OSX) also crashes, with error code -37 whenever classic is running (this is also at random intervals, but does not freeze the machine completely). It works fine when classic is not running.
Anyone know what is going on or have any suggestions to attempt to correct this? Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Mark

    Henrik,
Did you reinstall after updating to Yosemite? That is normally recommended.
Apart from that, many have serious difficulties running CS4 with Yosemite at all.
Has the combination been running successfully, before the issue?
If so, you may have a look at the list; the most likely relevant parts of 5) are items 1) and 11).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • M45 S359 laptop auto switch between ethernet and wireless

Had a HDD failure, replaced the HDD and rebuilt system.  Everything is working with the exception of autoswitching the connecting to the internet.  The machine used to auto switch to wireless if the ethernet cable was removed and connect via wireless or vise versa.  I now have to manually switch to the connection, do a repair before it will connect.  Once the repair is done, the connection is solid. It is probably a simple?? configuration somewhere, but I do not know where.   Need some guidance,  Tx..

Let's keep things in this thread.

  • Switched from OS9 to OSX... nothing.  Ooops.  Help?

I have a G4, with OS9 and OSX Panther. I switched from 9 (which works great) to X, rebooted, and now all I get is the grey slash-through-circle. Rebooting doesn't help. I got the computer used so I don't have either OS install disks.
I'm certain this is an easy fix, but apparently I'm kinda stupid. Thanks for your advice. -john
    G4 Mac OS X (10.1.x)
    G4   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

    hello john
first of all, as its a used unit, you probably may want to have the removable stuff such as the RAM checked out. OSX does require a lil' more ram than OS9.
another useful thing to do would be to clean it out after taking the back out, please dont remove anything without refering to the users manual. (this can also be easily downloaded from the web). check that nothing is damaged or burned out, if it is, you may get a return on your gurrantee.
if all else fails im afraid you may have to purchase a new unit. probably a resonable cheap mac mini.
i hope this helped your query.

  • Now Up-to-Date and Contact freezes OSX

I recently uninstalled Now Up-To-Date and Contact because it appeared to be freezing my OSX. I have 10.4.7. At least, I haven't had a single freeze since uninstalling it. I had noticed in activity monitor that NUDC was jumping in and out of the current processes every second or so, which is what caused me to think it was the culprit. Anyone else find this to be a problem? Perhaps it is only a problem on these old Powerbooks. I do have an older model, the 550 mghz with only 512 of RAM. The freezing on the Powerbook was so often and so unexpected, at first, I thought it had to do with where I was pushing down on the cpu because it coincidentally froze up a few times while I was testing pressure spots. Anyone else discover this issue? I was also using the lastest version of NUDC.

You should probably contact Now support.

  • IMac 27-inch, Late 2009 Freezes - OSX 10.9.5

    Greetings everyone,
Since a few days ago (today is Sept, 25th 2014), after I have applied an update for Safari and iTunes, when I play World of Warcraft for a few minutes, a flick happens and only the mouse pointer moves on the screen. No keyboard response, nothing else.
I have to turn the machine off so I can try using it again.
I have read a lot about this kind of problem on forums and they seem to be either related to age or RAM (so experts recommend to clean memory slots and vacuum out the dust from the air holes to facilitate the cooling, but I haven't tried yet.
I did some search and could gather some information with EtreCheck that I hope will be of any use for those that could land me some help.
Before showing the info, please do not bother for the etc/hosts number. I have changed this list myself to avoid publicity on my machine before Adblocker was created :-D

Yes.. plug in ethernet.. wait a few minutes then turn off wireless.. I cannot guarantee you the change over will happen without incident but it generally will figure out there is no path by wireless but there is still a connection.
Even if it fails.. and you have to start over. .it will still be faster than wireless.

I installed windows XP using bootcamp. There is no bootcamp icon in the control panel. How do I get back to OSX?

After Windows is installed (and updated) you need to insert your Leopard DVD.
