Switching to Icloud with Iphoto 6

My MacBook (from 2007) has Iphoto 6 on it - can I switch to Icloud? (the photos on my MobileMe are not already in Iphoto due to a system crash)

No. You need iPhoto 11 v9.2.2 to use any of the iCLoud features.
Note too that iCloud is very different from MobileMe - no web galleries for a start.

  • Switching to iCloud with Snow Leopard

I believe I've researched enough posts here on Apple Discussions to tell me that what I want to do is possible, but I want to confirm it before I take some irrevocable action. So, first I'll describe what I want to do, then my understanding of how to do it, and then ask my questions. If any part of it is mistaken, I would greatly appreciate someone straightening me out.
I want to keep my mac.com email functionality for my primary account, my aliases, and my email-only accounts—all of which use mac.com addresses.
For now, I don't care about contacts, calendars, bookmarks, or any other syncing except mail server syncing with my SeaMonkey mail client on multiple Snow Leopard Macs.
I can't install Lion (yet) on all of my Snow Leopard computers. I have some software compatibility issues that have yet to be resolved, and one machine (Macbook Pro Core Duo) isn't compatible with Lion at all.
I have several IMAP and POP mail accounts that forward to my primary mac.com address, and I would like that to continue.
It's my understanding that I can log into my MobileMe account, select the "Not all devices meet requirements" option, agree to the iCloud Terms of Service, and then click the Move to iCloud button to use Apple's mail services with iCloud after MobileMe ends.
    Here are my questions:
Will the move to iCloud work as described?
Do I need to claim I have Lion installed on all devices? (I don't.)
Will all of my existing mac.com email-only accounts and aliases continue to work after I move to iCloud? (I seem to recall reading somewhere that the paid-for email-only accounts will work, but the aliases wont...but I'm not certain that's correct.)
Will I have full access to all iCloud features on any Mac on which Lion is installed?
I currently have some web content hosted on my iDisk, and I understand that the iDisk will disappear on July 1. Is there some equivalent functionality in iCloud, wherein iCloud will host browser-based web content? That doesn't appear to be the case, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
    Thanks!

The iCloud Mail server settings are different from MobileMe (though sometimes the MobileMe settings continue to work for a time after migration) so you will need to set SeaMonkey up manually with the new settings which are listed in this page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
I have several IMAP and POP mail accounts that forward to my primary mac.com address, and I would like that to continue.
Forwarding can continue as before (note that iCloud does not have MobileMe's ability to check external POP accounts and if you have any of that set up you should stop it before migration). Also, as with MobileMe, you will not be able to send using the outgoing iCloud server with anything other than your @me.com address as the 'From' address.
Will all of my existing mac.com email-only accounts and aliases continue to work after I move to iCloud?
Yes: each email-only account will need to be migrated separately and will become individual iCloud accounts with no connection to the main one. Aliases will be transferred over to the account they belong to. iCloud allows only three aliases, but if you have five they will be maintained, however you will have to delete three rather than one before you can create a new one. Some people have found creation of new aliases problematic.
Is there some equivalent functionality in iCloud, wherein iCloud will host browser-based web content?
No: you will need to find another hosting service. This page may be of some help:

  • Will my mail sync with an older macbook which cannot run Lion if I switch to iCloud ?

I have a older Macbook that does not have sufficient memory to run Lion but I use it occasionally when I am on the road. If I switch to iCloud with my iMac desktop, will I stll be able to sync my mail with my older macbook or is that dead for all practical purposes ?

Yes your non lion mac will still be able to use your mail account even if it's been upgraded to iCloud on a lion mac. You can still use iWeb and still use it with iDisk even though you have upgraded to iCloud, iDisk will still be there until June 2012.

No you won't necessarily lose your photos when upgrading but it's very very unwise not to back up first. Backing up is like using a seat belt in a car. You can drive without one for years and have no issues, but if you do have a problem the outcome will be a lot worse. So, too, with back ups. And upgrading is one of those times when the risks of a problem are higher.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • ICloud photostream issues with iPhoto 9

    MacbookPro 2013, running 10.9.1 with iPhoto 9.5.1
I have set up a new photostream with iCloud and it's fine on all my devices, but when I try to open the pics through iPhoto it takes me to my 'trash folder'.
I can see the folder and the thumbnails are all fine?
When I then try to play the slideshow, the images appear but are overlaid with the word 'trash'
    Very wierd.
    Any advice?

#1 is an indication that the library is damaged. Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Is there a setting on the iphone that will allow ical entries on the iphone to sink to my other computers
    Thank-you

    Welcome to the Apple community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • My Mobile Me account ends soon and Apple is telling me to switch to iCloud. I have an iPad2 and 64 gig iTouch that I dont see any issues with but I have not updated my Mac to Lion. Will everything work?

    Hi,
I have an iPad2 and an iTouch (64G) devices as well as a Mac running snow leopard. I dont want to update to Lion because I will not be able to use my quicken software (I am aware of quicken essentials for mac) I am receiving emails that I am running out of time for my Mobile Me account and I am being encouraged to switch to iCloud. My question is if I switch to iCloud on my devices will I still be able to sync with my computer?

No. You will need to upgrade to Lion to sync with your computer. You can use the web version of icloud but it is clunky and doesn't work as well.

  • I have a Powerbook G4 (don't laugh) with iPhoto '08. How does iCloud work with my computer. I have a iPhone 4 that has iCloud.

I have a Powerbook G4 (don't laugh) with iPhoto '08. How does iCloud work with my computer. I have a iPhone 4 that has iCloud. Is iCloud pushing my phone's PhotoStream to my computer if it doesn't have the latest OS? Thanks so much for whoever can help!

iCloud will not work with your computer because iCloud requires Lion. Lion requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better. For you to have iCloud and PhotoStream you would need to buy a newer Mac Intel model meeting the requirements for Lion:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • If I switch to iCloud, Outlook for Mac is not synchronizing with iCal and iCloud anymore. Is there a solution for this problem?

I normally use Outlook for Mac as the standard email and calendar programm. When I use the USB cable fro synchronising contacts and calendars with my iPhone 4s ther is not problem at all. iCal, Mail and Oulook for Mac are synchronising perfectly.
When I switch to iCloud, Oulook is completely empty and Calendar and Contacts are not synchronised anymore.
Is this a known problem, and is there a solution for it?

I have the same keyboard and do not have battery issues.
It may have something to do with using rechargeable batteries.
You can also try removing the keyboard then re-pairing it. Maybe a bad bluetooth connection is draining the battery.
    System Preferences > Bluetooth > right-click (control-click) on the keyboard > Remove > Remove
Wait for it to show in the bluetooth list then Pair > enter the number sequence & return as displyed on the screen.

  • Anyone having trouble with their MobileMe email after switching to iCloud?

After making the switch to iCloud, I can't access my MobileMe email at all. When I enter my information on my phone to set up the account it verifies it, then when I go to the mail app it says the password is incorrect. When I got to my Mail map on my mac it says the server rejects my password. When I go to the mobile me and iCloud websites they tell me there is an error.

Same here - I had to turn my iphone4 Off several times and finally left if off for a few minutes - that seemed to do the trick. Once I restarted it prompted me to transfer my MobileMe account to iCloud and when I clicked OK it worked like a charm.

  • Error switching between user accounts with iPhoto

    Hello,
Currently I have two administrative accounts on my MacBook Pro.  I normally upload pictures to my admin account (since my apple ID is tied to that one), but use the other administrative account for the main family one.  The pictures are shared through iPhoto.  Everytime i switch accounts to access iPhoto, i need to "Repair it" in order for it to open properly.  Can someone give me the fix for this, or tell me if there is an easier way and still maintain two accounts?

Here are teh Apple comments on that - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US - experiance indicates that using an external hard drive is the more successful way to do it

  • What happens to my MobileMe Gallery when I switch to iCloud?

I have about 20 picture folders in my MobileMe Gallery.
    1.  What happens to those pictures when I switch to iCloud? Do I need to manually download each folder and then reload them to iCloud?
    2. Gallery had a nice option of making some folders public and others private - does anyone know if this option exists in the iCloud photostream?
    3. I currently have a PC (ugh! - saving to get a MAC) running Windows XP Pro - am I correct that Photostream will not work with my PC?
    Many thanks for any help!!

If you have an iPhone 4 or 4s, an iPad 2 or newer you could download iPhoto for iOS; import your albums onto the devices and use the Journal function to create a journal and post it to iCloud for friends to see. It even allows you to announce to your friends and family the new post.  The images look as if they are posted on a bulletin board. After selecting an image, the view can manually view the next image by pressing the next button or view all of them in a slideshow.

  • Using Adobe Bridge file structure with iPhoto (latest version)

I use Adobe Bridge and have all my pics in named folders in Pictures/PICS/Folder Names.  Inside the PICS folder is the iPhoto Library (only a few pics in it).  Is there any way I can use the file structure I have set up with Bridge and iPhoto (latest) simultaneously?  I really dont want to import (copy) all my pics into IPhot because I am pretty sure I will end up with two versions of each.  I havent been able to manage pics manually the way I like to in older versions of iPhoto.

Here's some info to help you setup Photoshop for use with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Can i use iCloud with one apple id but app store with another; especially on iOS 6?

My household has multiple devices.  I own iPhone and iPod, both on iOS 5.1.1, and iCloud (used for apps, iMessage, and backup.)
I almost never buy music, but I buy some apps.
My SO has iPhone (also on 5.1.1), and she uses my apple id for purchases (mostly kid apps.) She does not (yet) use iCloud (paranoid about it
She uses iMessage (with her own apple id.)
Anyway, I suppose at some point she would switch to iCloud too.  It is also likely that we would move to iOS 6 once it is released (me first, likely.)
I know that Apple does not allow transferring app ownership from one account to another, as well as splitting or merging accounts.
Question: would she be able to use her own ID for iCloud (photo stream, backups) but my ID for app purchases? (I like it, let me control app expenses.)
If any of you are using IOS 6 preview, can you try this scenario (different IDs for app store, backups, and iMessage.)
Unsure if iOS 6 feature set is already public - if not, let me know 5.1.1 situation.  Thanks!

    thank you, @randers4!
(sorry for using twitter notation - hope you would not mind.)
for other commenters (especially Tawnii) - I view Apple ID (which was before essentially Store ID) as a purse with money.  Money is shared in our family;  I don't like "get your own milk license, and mark your bottles" approach.
Currently my spouse uses her own ID for iMessage (and she does not use icloud for mail, calendar, reminders, etc - pretty much iMessage and iOS Store are only apps she uses), but we use same set of apps (mostly kid apps) on all of our devices (including iPad, which is used by our little daughter).  It does feel a little weird when purchases on one device appear on another (but this is an option which can be turned off.)  We almost never buy music or books from iTunes store.
iCloud backup for my devices uses my ID (which is same ID we use for Store.)  My spouse does not use iCloud backup.  I suppose Mountain Lion can give her incentive to use shared Photo stream, and perhaps bookmarks.
Just so you guys know, we live in a country which did not have App store permitted until recently, so it was not possible for my SO to obtain her own ID for purhasing apps, even if she wanted (my ID is U.S.-based, where I used to live before.)
I feel that Apple model works fine for individuals but does not work well for family environments - for example, I want to listen to music from both of our computers on our Apple TV, but it is not easy: I can share iTunes collection or iTunes Match music set to Apple TV, but only from one account.
And I also suppose our two-year old would not be able to use her own account, even though she is iOS user for about a year already (iPads work great for kids, we tried 50+ different apps and have our own set.)
Again, thank everybody for quick responces, this is my first time using Apple forums and I am very happy
