Switching to Mac, how to set up After Effects

I just received my new Mac Pro and subscribed to Adobe Cloud.
I'm setting up After Effects and need to set my Media Cache for fast processing. I am reading that I should set it to write to a separate hard drive from what I am saving my project to, but I don't know how to navigate to the folder that would write these files. Where is this located on the system?

Open up you preferences file by clicking on After Effecs in the menu bar and then picking preferences.

How can I use After Effects filters on a whole sequence without getting stuck in After Effects?

It appears that, with the options that are visible to the user, Dynamic Link only goes one-way and can't make round trips from Premiere Pro to After Effects and back again. If I send a sequence to After Effects, that part works fine and I can do what I want and save the comp. However, even though the comp appears as an asset in Premiere Pro, I am not allowed to do anything with it. If I try to drag it to a new sequence, it just says no. If I click "Create Sequence from Clip" it creates an empty sequence.
So how can I use After Effects on whole sequences/tracks instead of just on a clip-by-clip-by-clip-by-clip-by-clip basis? is this possible? For instance, if I have a whole sequence where I've neutralized the white balance, I might want to apply a warming filter to the whole thing as a unit. That would be really painful with even a few clips to keep doing that again and again, and if you want to modify it slightly you have to do it over and over. If there is a way to do that through Dynamic Link through some hidden option, what happens with the audio? Would I have to cut it out of the lower sequence and paste it into the higher sequence with the After Effects comp as a video track?

I'm not an Adoby guy, hence you may ignore my reply, but Adobe Dynamic Link is obviously not just one way ticket and in most cases works just fine.
You have already been explained by J-MS and tclark513 how to properly use it and which pitfalls may occur.
So as to apply an effect onto a whole sequence or a group of clips you need to either nest them in PrPro or pre-compose them in AE. Then just apply an effect (or several ones) onto that composition.
So, if you nest clips in PrPro, select your nested sequence in the timeline, right-click and choose 'Replace with After Effects Composition'. Done! Your dynamically linked AE composition is in the right place in your timeline and in your Project panel as well. If you can not treat it as an ordinary footage, there are obviously some mistakes in your workflow.
If you didn't nest your sequence or a group of clips in PrPro before replacing them with AE composition, you may easily do it within AE. Just select all the layers in AE composition and choose Layer -> Pre-compose... (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+C) Done! Switch back to your Master comp and apply your desired effect(s)
You may loose some effects or/and transitions while travelling from PrPro to AE via Adobe Dynamic Link, whereas you don't while travelling back
(If you start building your AE composition from scratch right in AE and then need to import it into PrPro, DO NOT export one as PrPro project out of AE, but rather choose Adobe Dynamic Link -> Import After Effects Composition... within PrPro)
P.S. And yes, submit a feature-request so that Adobe will convert 'Transparent Video' into fully functional 'Adjustment Layer'.

If your system does not meet the minimum system requirements you have to go back to a version that does. Try the direct download links you'll find here.. CS5 comes bundled with CS4 for AE which is the last version to run on a 32 bit system.

What do you mean by "unlock"?
My wild, shot-in-the-dark guess is that you've got some sort of template that, when you try to save, says that it's locked. If that's the case, try using "Save As" instead. If that's not your problem, refer to Todd's link and provide more info.

You can either upgrade or move to Creative Cloud. But since you’re a student an upgrade does not exist so just pick the student version you want and go with that.

How do I get after effects to render with my GPU?

Yea, really noob question, but I can't figure it out!
Spent literally HOURS trying to find how to do this.. Use my GTX 670 to render instad of CPU. Can't figure it out. I finally (I think) figured out where to change the setting to raytraced rendering, but it still REFUSES to use it. I can't work like this! Countless hours to render a 4 min video with an i7? I am checking with a hardware monitor, and my GPU isn't getting used.
I don't have the time (or inclination) to watch hours and hours of tutorial videos. I am the type of person that uses templates and modifies them to my needs/desires, so pointing me to a "generic" after effect tutorial website will do no good.
Now, I only mention this to show that I don't come running for help every time I have a small problem, and refuse to try and find the answer myself. I have myself learned how to edit text, make it appear and disappear. Slow down and speed up an entire composition and much much more all by using google. But I obviously can't get the wording right with google because I can't find a solution.

You cannot enforce GPU raytracing if your card is not supported and that is that. If adding the card to the raytracer_supported_cards.txt file and updating the graphics driver doesn't do it, then nothing will. You are using dead technology, anyway.

After Effects warning: Could not rename the file '/Users/xxxx/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/12.0/Workspaces.1121.1407353248120481.xml' to 'Workspaces.xml'.

Mac OS has set the permissions for the preferences folder incorrectly. Set the permissions for the entire preferences folder (the 12.0 folder) to be writable.
This happens a lot with Mac OS upgrades, as opposed to fresh installations of the new OS.

Hello, I'm having an issue with After Effect CC. When clicking on other windows like apps and or desktop or finder windows After Effect will hide I was wondering if this was normal this was not happing when I was using After Effect CS6 and only happen since using CC is there away to fix this or is it normal for After Effect CC to hide when using other windows and or apps ?

No, it does not happen to any of my other apps on my mac and it does not happen with any other Adobe software like Photoshop, Premiere pro and illustrator. This issue only happens with After Effect CC (this also did not happen when I was using CS6 only since I upgraded to CC (and this problem has been happing before the new mac update to 10.10))

Building Virtual Sets with After Effects?

A friend and I are wanting to build a virtual set using images created from Photoshop CS5, and then taking them in to Adobe After Effects to create the virtual framework for the sets. We found a video on youtube that led us to believe that we have the capability to do exactly what we are asking for. So I suppose my question is there any tutorial or information about how I can make the 3-dimensional compositing of my photoshopped walls? Please please help! Below is the video of what we are trying to do, but the original creator didn't want to create the 2nd part of the tutorial.

The biggest problem you'll face with virtual sets is matching the perspective. An equally large elephant in the room would be matching any camera movement. Even a simpla pan can totally destroy the illustion.
Start off simple with a locked off camera and something in the shot that you can use to match perspective. Don't zoom. Don't pan. If you need more than one angle then cut between positions.
Planing is the key. I'll say that again. Planning is the key. An example of your created set would help us give you some advice on how to create the illustion. It would also be helpful to know if you know anything about keying, light wraps, and color correction. All of these skills are required if you are going to make a virtual set work well.

How do I relink after effects compositions to my premiere pro sequence?

I've re-installed the latest Premiere Pro CC and After Effects CC programs and opened a project I have recently been working on. Now each linked composition is offline and when I use 'Link Media' it won't respond to me clicking on the appropriate AE file.
'Adobe Dynamic Link' in the file menu is grayed out as well as 'Edit Original' and 'Replace With After Effects Composition' in the clip right-click menu
I have a full membership of adobe suite CC and have updated to the latest versions of both Creative Cloud, Premiere Pro and After Effects
I've tried uninstalling then re-installing; signing out then signing back in. All attempts to google the issue have lead to nothing.
Really hope its something very simple that I'm missing, please help

sounds like premiere thinks AE is not installed. im not sure what premiere looks at to figure that out and enable AE options, perhaps someone else, or adobe staff knows what setting to change to fix this. otherwise you may have to try to uninstall, use the cleaner tool to clean out any left over parts of the program left behind, then reinstall. I'd get a MacPro with a lot of RAM. This gives me a platform I can expand through third party video i/o cards,esata cards for external RAID boxes, extra internal drives, multiple monitors, etc and will have the longest useable life span.

Absolute speed? Flexibility? Expandability? Life cycle costs? Low cost of entry? or ???
Define your needs, long term plans and budget more closely and what machine to purchase will become obvious.
