Switching to SMB

Hello, I work in a large pre-press department, we store and work from all Windows servers utilizing the AFP/SFM protocol/service on our servers. All Mac users currently mount via AFP. I would like to eliminate AFP/SFM from my servers and work exclusively via SMB mounts. I am curious if anyone has made this move and what kind of issues I will face and any suggestions you might have.
TIA,
Canzo

Dude... if you use Macs as your workstations, use AFP whenever possible. Bad move for you to consider if you ask me.
Apple file structure is more complex than Microsoft file structure. Apple files have two "parts," called a "data fork" and a "resource fork," and also contain special extra information called "Finder metadata" that includes things like the Type and Creator codes, custom icons, and so on.
If you connect with AFP, which was designed by Apple to allow files with two parts, the Windows server will automatically and seamlessly handle Mac files and Mac Finder metadata.
However, Apple's implementation of SMB does not permit storing two-part files or Finder metadata. So if you connect with SMB, then every time you copy a Mac file to the server, the file will be broken up into TWO files and saved in two parts on the server. One of the two parts will have a period in front of its file name, and will contain the resource fork and Finder metadata. You won't see two files on the Macs, but you WILL see two files instead of one whenever you look at the files on the PC.
If you mix both SMB and AFP, you can create all kinds of problems--if one computer uses SMB and copies a file to the server, then another computer connects with AFP and looks at the file, its icon and Finder associations may be gone.
I recommend you stick with AFP. However, whatever decision you make, make sure it's consistent. Don't try to copy some files with AFP and some with SMB, and don't connect from some computers with AFP and some with SMB.
Should you stick with AFP, I would definitely recommend purchasing ExtremeZ-IP from Group Logic:
http://www.grouplogic.com/products/extremeZ-IP/
If you're dead set on using SMB, then I'd recommend you implement a solution such as Thrusby's DAVE and/or AdmitMac:

  • L3 switching on SMB SGE2010 48 port switch?

    Hi,
I'm considering buying the SGE2010 48 port switch. Does anyone know if it can do layer 3 switching? In the administration guide I find references to static routing and VLAN interfaces. But the guide doesn't come out and say "you can do routing like this".
    Thanks in Advance,
      Joe

    Hi Joe
Personally, If I want a SB stacked Layer 3 switch solution,  the SG500 series or even the SG300 series (if stacking not a requirement) switches are great switches.  The SG300 screen capture below, shows it does come static routing as you can see from a screen capture. But when you add a Vlan to the switch and add a device and a IP address in the associated port, a interface route is automatically created so that Layer 3 switching will occur between VLANs.
The SGx00 series are a couple of generation ahead of the SGE2010 in terms of features and functionality.
SG300 series are a  teremndous (non stackable)switch family that can Layer 3 switch between multiple  vlans.  Just had a software update last week, that expanded the featureset available to our partners and their end users.
Both the 300 and 500 series offer a piece of mind warranty as well.
    regards Dave

  • I can't get SMB to work in 10.9.4

    Hello,
I have 4 systems running 10.9.4 and they all connect to a file server also running 10.9.4 via AFP. It works but it's wicked slow a listing file directories. I read that apple is doing away with afp and switching to SMB. I can't seem to get SMB to work.
I've opened the ports on our firewall TCP/UDP 137, 138, 139 & 445. But I still get an error when I try to connect via SMB that read: "There was a problem connecting to the server . . ."
AFP work, VNC works....just not SMB.
I have checked under file sharing preferences and "Share files and folders using SMB" is checked and I've even set up the "Windows File Sharing: " account thing in the bottom of the options.
When I ping for ports, 445 shows in the list but 137, 138 and 139 do not....I think this may be the issue but I have no idea why they wouldn't show up as they are indeed open according to my router's firewall.
I want to connect via SMB to see if it is any faster at listing file directories. After upgrading to Mavericks the share listings have gotten terrible. We regret making the update.
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Windows PC's and SMB

    Hi there,
I currently have a MacMini Server running Lion.
Each user has an individual login.
I am having problems with SMB between the server and the Windows7 PC's on my network.
Every so often(hours or on login) the authentication is broken and they need to retype their password to access the shared drives.
I have looked at using the NET USE command and it does not seem to have provided a solution.
Also if I try to create a batch file to re-add the drives on login it says that I am only allowed to have one connection to the server at a time.
if anyone could shed some light on how to fix this error it would be terrific!
    Thank you,
    Gianpaolo

We had the same issue on our server.  We read that SMB 1 & 2 is no longer supported in OS X server for either Lion or Mtn. Lion.  We tried to switch from SMB 2 to SMB 1, and that was no better.  Since SMB 3 is not an option, I guess we are out of luck.  It appears that Apple has decided to dump on small businesses like mine that have a Mac server, several MacBooks, a Mac Mini, multiple iPads, and 2 PC's (win 7) that we use (1 for QuickBooks and 1 for Autocad).  I guess that is why the server software is $20, so we won't complain too much about wasting our time and money to upgrade.  Our solution has been to re-build the server back to Snow Leopard (which we bought for $500) and deal with the problems each of our MacBooks (which are all on Lion or Mtn. Lion) has in communicating with it.  It's bad customer service by Apple either way, but it's better to deal with the latter issues and be able to do accounting and CAD.  Apple, are you listening?  I guess Apple thinks it's OK to act as poorly to it's customers as Microsoft.  What a shame.

  • Stuffit issues with an SMB server? Running 10.7.3

I use a MBP running 10.7.3. I need to use Stuffit to stuff things to an SMB server. Whenever I try, it gives me error #17527 (insufficient access privileges). Any idea how this could be resolved?
We used to use an AFP version of the same server, but due to the Adobe Creative Suite issues with Lion, we had to switch to SMB to get any work done.
    Any help would be great.

  • AFP Failure under Mavericks 10.9.1, Server 3.0.2

I'm plagued with an issue going back to 10.6.8 that I have been unable to resolve, through two Server updates (10.8.5 and 10.9.1).
I run a small business with a Man mini Server, running 10.9.1, Server 3.0.2 and mac  clients ranging from 10.6.8 to 10.9.1.  Our previous server (pre-2013) was an Xserve Intel, running Server 10.6.8.  We have been having periodic issues with 'afpfs' errors to file shares that result in frozen clients.  Previously, we hosted Network Home Directories.  About a year ago, we had random clients experience an error similar to the one listed below, which would result in a dropped home folder and freeze the machine.  After countless hours of troubleshooting the server, client, home directory (between ourselves and outside Mac Consultants), the source of the problem was never discovered.
As such, we were advised to switch from network home directories, to mobile home directories.  Around that time (actually just before), we upgraded our server to a Late 2012 Mini (fully loaded) with Mountain Lion Server.  For the past six months, we have not had any repeat issues.  Last week, we decided to upgrade to Mavericks Server, wihch went seemelss, with the exception of having to retore the OD from an Archive (it didn't update properly).  Thngs worked for 3 days, before we started having clients experience connection issues (one running 10.9.1, one running 10.8.5).  Both have been temporarily resolved by switching to SMB fileshare protocol.  IN the past, we've tried reinstalling software on clients, servers, rebuilding OD, etc., however, none have preven to solve the issue.  I'm baffled, as we do no use many advanced services of the mini server.  It is used for:
    Caching
    File SHaring
    Messages
    Profile Manager
    Time Machine
    VPN
    DNS
    FTP
    Open Directory
    Software Update
Our professional Apple consultant has even commented that he has never seen an organization with some many OD issues, and they work with many schools with hundreds of users.
    Please help!

Not sure if you are still following this but I ran across the same issue and called Apple Enterprise Support. They said this is a known issue and there is a radar bug on it but it has not been resolved. They actually sent me here http://www.themajorshome.com/wordpress/?p=94 and this does seem to work. The blog writer states this had been going on since V1. Its also funny that apple support does not have a proper script they can supply to resolve this issue.

  • Indesign CS3 & 10.6.2 server: file corruption

    Hi All,
I'm having problems with one of our customer's setup. They're experiencing some sort of file corruption on Indesign CS3 files. These files are worked on by students in classrooms. At random, files won't open anymore in Indesign CS3 (or in CS4),so they need to start all over again. At first, file corruption occured seldom, but in the last few days I get too many reports. So I definately think something is at hand here.
The students log in to their network home folders. Client and server(s) are mac os x 10.6.2.
Clients / servers are fresh installed last x-mas. 2 fileservers (1 classroom, 1 homedirectory), 1 dedicated od server, 700 students, 45 classes. Both fileservers are new iron.
Before this, I had the same setup in 10.4.11, and this worked flawlessly for almost two years. So I know I can work with this setup over a network.
Before I start suspecting (and swapping) hardware, does anyone have pointers where to look or tests I could do?
    Much appreciated.
    Edgar

Well, going back to 10.4 is not an option. The previous servers (PPC G5 xserves) running the 10.4 setup have been sold. Current hardware was delivered with only 10.6 software so that rules out switching back to 10.5 as well.
You mention ACL's. I could dive into that. Since 10.5 Apple introduced default ACL's for the spotlight indexing process. The share is rather simple, it uses mainly posix permissions because it contains the homedirectories. In that perspective, the only change (besides a new afp stack) is the spotlight ACL. I could remove it, spotlight isn't running on that share.
I don't think I can switch to SMB for the user homedir stuff. If it was a normal data share it wouldn't be a problem.
Seems I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place..

  • Log is filled with AFP_VFS afpfs_vnop_getxattr:  bad dataLength offset 2 replySize 2

    Hi all,
I'm connecting to a LaCie big NAS, wired, via AFP. Lately networktransfer is veeeeery slow and I see my log is filled with:
AFP_VFS afpfs_vnop_getxattr:  bad dataLength offset 2 replySize 2 (as soon as i browse the NAS disk or start a transfer a series of these error messages are added).
I've seen some reports of this error, apparently it has something to do with OS X Maverick and netatalk version. But I can't find a solution...
I tried to switch to SMB but that throwes lot of error -36 (unexpected end of file) when saving files (for example AI) directly to the disk.
Any suggestions? Would be much appreciated .
    Viktor

Resetting the NetworkSpace 2 back to it's shipping configuration and freshly updating to 2.2.8.5 didn't help, so don't bother going to the (considerable) trouble if Lacie tech support suggests it will fix the problem.
Their current advice is to abandon AFP and connect to the NS2 as an SMB volume or via FTP.   Not very useful if you purchased the device intending to use it (as advertised) for Time Machine backups.

  • Reader 11.0.09 slow opening network files

I have several users that are experiencing slow times opening .PDF's located on a network drive. For users effected a single .PDF can take up to 45 seconds to open. If opened locally issue is not present. To temporarily fix this issue I have had to install version 9.0, but I would like to have them on the updated version for security purposes. All systems are Win7 - 32bit, 8 gigs memory, with different models of Dell laptops and desktops. I have read through all forums that I can find regarding this issue and found no resolution. I have performed the following on systems with issue.
    1. disable "Tool" bar
    2. disable "Enhanced Security" features
    3. applied all "Windows Updates"
    4. switched between SMB 2.0 and SMB 3.0
    5. removed and re-installed "Reader", version 11.0.09 and 11.0.08 - issue is still present

This issue comes out of two things I can see from our last deployment of 11.0.09.
bEnableAcrobatHS needs to be disabled you can do this via registry or using Adobe's packaging tools. The key below needs to be set to a value of "0" zero. this will shut off the desired options.

  • Can't connect Mac to Windows network drive

I am the only Mac in a PC college. I frequently have to connect to shared folders on the PC network. For six months I could "connect to server... cifs://name" with no problems. Last month, this suddenly stopped working (error = server may not exist). My office IT people told me to switch to smb://name and it worked again for at least a day. Now I can't get it to connect at all. The finder can see the PC server in the shared pane, but it won't connect to it. "Connect to server" won't connect either, no matter how I try. I get the "server may not exist" error, the "volume won't mount" error, or the "not all data is readable" error. The local IT people say they haven't changed anything and all the Windows people are fine. As the lone Mac user, I don't think much help is forthcoming from IT here. I don't know much about this sort of thing, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.
I do not know if the problem coincides with the update to 10.5.6 or not.

    Karen –
Unfortunately I think that 10.5.6 broke several aspects of MS Windows support. If you were to GOOGLE ‘can’t connect to windows shares with os x 10.5.6’ you will find plenty. I personally have not upgraded to 10.5.6 because of it. Though not the best method you may want to consider using the IP address of the system you are connecting to.
    smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/<share name>
Obviously I know that this is easier than said especially if you are the only Mac on the network, I am sure the College IT group is just going to fall on their swords to help you with this or even providing you this information. With that said you may be able to get the IP by trying to ‘PING’ the server’s name. To do this open a Terminal session on your Mac and type the following at the prompt:
    ping <server name>
You should get a something like this:
    PING <server name> (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx): 56 data bytes
Now let me caution you, I am sure that the college has turned of PING reply on their network you will most likely get the line above and that is it. Also depending how aggressively they monitor their network for such activities you may show up on some report. Given that I would suggest that if possible you find someone in the IT group that is somewhat sympathetic to your problem and let them know what you are attempting to do.
Not the best answer but I know that using the IP instead of the server name seems to work.
    Best of luck.

  • AFP SLOW SLOW SLOW on Xserve!! [critical]

Our studio uses an Xserve (Intel 8-core) with Leopard Server along with multiple clients ranging from Mac Pro's, Macbook Pro's and other Xserves and am having problem after problem!!! All machines are running 10.5.4.
Mainly, the problem revolves around EXTREMELY SLOW (or non existent) networking between our Mac Pro's (also 8-core) and this Xserve. I have turned off the Firewall on the Xserve and only have QTSS, AFP and SMB services running. We never had problems when running 10.4 (Tiger).
Currently AFP won't even allow anyone to connect! I have restarted the Xserve numerous times and changed settings without success. Therefore, I switched to SMB which allowed us to connect and use the file share but all of a sudden (within 20 hours of switching to SMB), networking is excruciatingly SLOW!!!! Not even usable!
I'm losing faith in Apple which I've never thought I would hear myself say. Snow Leopard better be the end-all in stability, speed and reliability.

    Stephen,
How are you connecting to the server (ethernet, fibre)?
If you're using ethernet (which i assume you are) what are you typing to connect to the server?
    To make sure you connect properly, try this;
    afp://adminusername@serveripaddress
This will then guarantee you have privileges to connect.
Also, if you are using Ethernet, is it Cat5 or Cat6? Cat6 will be alot faster, if you have a lot of video/audio going over it, but depending on how much stuff there is, Cat5 maybe fine!
Post back to let us know...

  • HT200217 AFP Access Log

    w_sinclair wrote:
    Hi John,
Do you know of any other products ot logging tools that can interogate the AFP process that provides more granular reporting or SysLog functions?
The only log you can get is the afp log. You could in theory use a tool to process the content to make it easier to determine who did what. There is a tool called splunk for analysing all ypes of log files, it is however not free and would require a fair amount of work to setup to your needs.
    See http://www.splunk.com/view/log-management/SP-CAAAC6F
To summarise the problem, the afp log lists all activity against IP addresses, this does include a login, so to start with there will be an entry saying xyz logged in to the AFP server from nn.nn.nn.nn IP address. Subsequent entries for that user like opening or deleting files would only be listed against the IP address and would not show the user name. With even a modest sized network there will be thousands of entries in the log making it very hard to scroll back to find who last logged in on a particular IP address and therefore did the activity. In some more esoteric cases multiple different users could be logged in from the same IP address at the same time making even this impossible.
Other makes of server offering AFP support might have logs that specifically list user names for each activity, therefore if you have the absolute need to be able to do this the only option might be to use a different AFP server e.g. NetAtalk, or ExtremeZ-IP, or even switching to SMB, obviously you should test this before paying out.
