Switching Users and iTunes

We have a problem with iTunes when we switch users. We both (only 2 users) have full admin rights and no password required. Both iTunes use the same media source, have the same library name, have sharing turned on, are configured the same exactly. The problem is that for one user (me, actually) all of the music, playlists, apps, etc are as they should be. Switch to the other user (my wife), open iTunes, and no music, playlists, etc. What can we do so that we both have the same iTunes?

Move your /Music/iTunes folder to /Users/Shared/ folder.
Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/.
Quit iTunes.
Have your wife log into her account.
Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/.
Quit iTunes.
That's it.
Only one user can be logged into iTunes at a time so if you are using Fast User switching and the other user wants to open iTunes, you must quit iTunes before switching users.

Problems switching users and recovering from long sleep sessions

I upgraded my 2008 MacBook Pro to Mavericks and am now having issues with switching users and recovering from sleep. I can sometimes go to the login window but the system hangs when switching from one user to another. It often hangs after long sleep sessions.
Often I am finding that switching off and back on i sth easiest solution but I am getting a bit sick of it. Anyone have any suggestions?

I usually leave my Pismo on and allow it to sleep. I find that waking from sleep and general functioning of the computer works a lot better if from time to time (I do it at least weekly) I shut down the computer, start up in Safe Mode, log in, empty Trash and reboot normally. The emptying Trash part clears the font caches.
You should consider doing other maintenance procedures, if you don't already. Gulliver's Mac OS X System Maintenance has good ideas with linked resources.

Switching users and get white screen

I have now had this happen twice, and it seems to be a mountain lion flaw. I am either logged in and switch users; or I am logged in, it goes to sleep, I wake it, and then switch users. I cannot isolate it completely, but I get a white screen. I am able to move my mouse, but everything is white. I eventually have to just shut it down. I have reset my PRAM, and at a later time even unplugged my computer for a little and rebooted. It takes a few days to get it to reoccur. I think it is isolated to the following scenario, but not positive: I am working on my user, leave my computer, come back and it is a sleep, wake it from sleep, and then switch user, and then WHITE SCREEN where mouse cursor can be moved. I am using a Mid 2010 imac.

The 10.8.1 seems to have fixed it from locking up completely, but the transitions between usres is still slower than Lion. At least no freezing up yet.

G5 dual/1.8GHZ slow when switching users and starting mail, opening files

I have 20' imac dual cpu G5/1.8ghz/1gig/250gig drive with 10.4.11.
It is much slower than the G5 it replaced. Symptoms include: very slow when switching to another user desk tops, opening up the hard drive for the first time once you get there, opening entourage or mail for the first time; lots of beach balls.
The drive has more than half the space left, we don't have many applications running, our iphoto and itunes libraries are under 20 gig combined. I ran the disk utility and cleaned up permissions. We typically leave the mac on all the time but restart occasionally.
Any ideas?

We'll let you in because you used to have a G5 iMac , but you really should post on the dual page. Anyway, have you cleaned your caches in the browser you use? You can use OnyX to clean all the caches. Make sure you empty the trash in all your user accounts as well. Try resetting the PRAM too.

Multiple iMac users and iTunes

I have setup our iMac with multiple users. I migrated all our digital music to one user and found all the cover art, etc to make it work well. Now I want to allow all the other users to access that music library. I have tried everything from adding the files from a shared folder to exporting it to physically copying all the files and cover art to a different folder for each user. Exporting doesn't work at all, and there doesn't seem to be a way to simply share the same music files across users on an iMac. The closest was physically copying the files, but that means gigabytes of duplicated files for each user, and it still loses some of the covert art. There has to be a solution to this, or Apple has missed a critical function for the multiple user feature. Please help.

Quit iTunes.
Move \Music\iTunes\ folder to the Shared folder.
Hold Option when starting iTunes and select *Choose existing library* then select the iTunes library file in \Shared\iTunes\.
iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time so each will need to quit iTunes when they are off the computer.

ITunes will not open in Windows 7 for one User. All I get is the Licence Agreement pane and when I click YES nothing further happens. I have set up a second user and iTunes opens without problem in that User window.

Clearly something is blocking the main user(administrator) from opening the iTunes programme and I cannot find a solution.

Yes I carried out the suggested procedure in safe mode , which did not resolve the issue and so this is what led me to set up a second User account. iTunes opened without problem in this second account and so I looked at the User-specific troubleshooting but I just could not locate the iTunes Preference files no matter how much searching I did.
I also tried uninstalling and re-installing but the problem persists. Would be very grateful for any further advice.

From the way you are describing it, it sounds like the HD has failed. Please look over Gray screen appears during startup for troubleshooting steps. You can also run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it may take 2-3 passes for any error codes to appear and each pass takes approximately 30-60 minutes. However either way you should plan on taking it into an Apple Store or AASP for service.

How do I switch users between ITunes?

I just set up an Apple account, and my fieonce has already had one. I need to switch from his account to mine. I do not know how to do that, since there is not a thing that says that he is loged onto his account. I do not know if I need to set up a who nother user on the computer, or what do do...... PLEASE HELP ASAP

I am not sure exactly what you are asking here. The closest thing I can think of is Fast User Switching which is initiated by checking a box in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.

Set up sync with user in windows 7 switch user and no bookmarks

sync doesn't work bertween admin and user accounts on a laptop - bookmarks won't display on admin account

Have you set up both profiles? In other words, each user should be treated as a different computer while following the steps described in this article:

Because you can't have both profiles open, you will need to use the Recovery Key and your account details as described in "I'm not near my computer" section.

Openbox: Lock screen and switch user?

I've started using Openbox a bit recently and I quite enjoy it, but I would like it if I could add options to switch user and to lock the screen, like in KDE or Gnome. Is there a way to do this?

Regardless of your login manager, you should be able to use Xscreensaver to lock the screen, but I do believe the switch user feature is only possible with GDM/KDM.

Constant Log In-Switch User pages interrupting work

T510 I keep getting "John locked" "switch user" screens, sometimes every two minutes, followed by a john Administator log in page.
I am the only user. This happened over a year ago and someone told me it is caused by Webshots screensaver settings.
I've tweaked these to no avail.
Is deleting Switch User and Lock from the Shut Down menu a good idea?
If so how wouold that be done

looking at this, i would recommend that you check in your program list and see if there is a Webshots program installed.
if there is remove it.

Installed 10.6.3 - apps won't launch - can't switch users

I installed this update this morning, and now am experiencing the following:
- sometimes I have to log-on 2 or 3 times before it accepts my log-in & password, just keeps taking me back to the log-in window.
- when I do get logged in, either the applications won't launch, or, if I am able to launch 1 application, I can't quit it or launch any other applications.
- tried switching users, and experience the same thing. And when trying to log-off as the switched user, the menu will disappear but it won't log-off. Can't restart either.
Have to turn off the machine and reboot, and then the same things happens again.
Any suggestions?

You may be able to repair this with The 10.6.3 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
