Switching Virtualization Question

Hello All,
I am switching to an iMac which is replacing my current desktop. My question is I have some software on the existing MS machine that is not available on OSX. Is there an easy way to convert the existing hard drive (XP) to a virtual machine that can be virtually booted in Parallels or VMWare (or even bootcamp though I would prefer virtualization)? I thought VMWare had some kind of utility to do this but could not find anything.
Any advice is appreciated
Thanks,
tim

Hi Tim,
both Parallels and Fusion do have 'Transporters' or 'Converters' applications that can do what you want.

  • Logical Switch design question...

    I received a new server that has 4 NIC's.
I've seen alot of articles about seperating out the Management, Live Migration, Cluster, and Tenant traffic but it seems they are putting it under all the NIC's teamed.
    So my questions are:
Is it better to dedicate a single NIC to management, single NIC to live migration, then TEAM the last two NIC's for tenant traffic?
Or is it better to TEAM all four NIC's and put them under one logical switch then create a virtual switch for Management, Live Migration, and Tenant traffic?
I am using multiple VLAN's for customers.

I went with a dedicate physical NIC for management and live migration and then teamed two NICs for VM traffic

  • Switching loop question

    Hello everyone!
I need some clarification of the switching loops. I apologise if my question is too simple, but i really cannot find answer in books, internet. Thanks in advance!
Please look at the attached topology. This is my test lab for switching loops learning. For simplification purpose IPs, MACs and interface's names were shortened (FF=FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF).
    Initial conditions:
    SW-1:
Cisco Catalyst 3750-V2, 12.2(50)SE5 IPServices, with default, factory config.
For an unmanaged switch simulation purpose, interfaces 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 were configured with switchport host macros and spanning-tree bpdufilter enable command (additional to default factory config).
Interfaces 1/2 and 1/3 were interconnected with straight through patch cord specifically for creating a switching loop. Just booted up, not learned any MAC-address.
    SW-2:
Cisco Catalyst 3750-V2, 12.2(50)SE5 IPServices, with default, factory config.
Just booted up, not learned any MAC-address.
    Both PCs:
    Have a clear ARP-cache.
    Test:
PC-1 sent ICMP-echo to PC-2. SW-1 received an ARP-request from MAC A (MAC-address of PC-1's NIC) to MAC FF (L2 broadcast as mentioned before) on its 1/1. Because of the initial conditions there is broadcast storm now. MAC A is flapping between 1/2 and 1/3. Next, PC-2 received an ARP-request from MAC A and sent ARP-reply. That ARP-reply arrived at SW-1 and started unicast storm additional to broadcast storm.
    This is clear for me.
    Question:
What i don't understand is why the SW-1 sends ARP-reply from PC-2 back to the SW-2 (interface 2/1)?
P.S. apologise for my english. Thanks again!

  • About to make the switch internet question

    Hey,
I am just about to make the switch and get a Mac Pro and I have a question that needs answering. I have two Linksys routers a Wireless-G and a Wireless-N. I need to know if I will be able to use either of these routers with a Mac? What I wanna do is hook the mac up directly to the router (Wired) as the main computer on my network and have all my windows computers hooked up to the router on wireless. I wanna get this figured out before I spend that big of a chunk of money.
    Thanks

Yes. A router is not platform specific (mac vs
windows). The only thing you won't be able to do is
upgrade the router's firmware, which requires a
    windows machine.
You most certainly can upgrade the LinkSys firmware from OS X. It doesn't work with Safari, but you can use Firefox, SeaMonkey, or Netscape (possibly others, though I have not tried it with any others).

  • About to make the switch monitor question

    Hey,
I am about to make the switch and get a Mac Pro and I have a question I need answered. Will I be able to use any LCD monitor with the Mac Pro? I need to figure this out because I think the Apple monitors are a bit out of my price range at this point in time.
    Thanks

Which LCD are you talking about?
I have a ViewSonic VE800 VGA LCD and it is fine. Uses the DVI-2-VGA adapter that is included.
I know there is a thread with someone with a problem - not sure how it turned out, whether it was the monitor or video card or something else. Not that many threads in this forum so it should be easy to find. Well, I had to search "Viewsonic": Viewsonic VX2025wm Sleep Problem

  • Unity Virtualization Question

    Hello,
I'm in the planning phase of upgrading Unity to 8.X and moving into a virtual environment.  The virtual environment is Cisco UCS M2 B series blades, the blades that are dedicated to Collaboration apllications have 64 gigs of memory and 2 Intel Xeon 5650 processors with six cores each.  In my reseach I came across the virtualizing Cisco Unity Design Guide, it does not show my processor being supported.
My questions is why isn't it supported and will it ever be supported.  It seems strange to me that it would not be, unless having six cores is the problem. You could have another server using the other two cores that are left after using the Unity Virtual machine template which calls for 4 cores.  That could possible cause problems for Unity, but  unlikely if you are using CPU Affinity to dedicate cores
If anyone has any insight into if this will ever be a supported  I would appreciate it.  Link with supported processors below.

  • About switching (newbie question #1a)

Coming from Aperture but trying LR4.1, I've found it painful to learn all the differences when you know Aperture well.
I do have Victoria Bampton's book, which I am slowly going through.
    But some initial questions:
-I've seen some definite buggy behaviour (forget what the issue was now), but it went away when I relaunched the s/w:
how stable is LR generally? (being at the 4.1 release level, I thought it should be pretty stable; sounds like the Adobe s/w stability is not near Aperture from the reports I've seen about buggy behaviour (PS on the other hand I've never had a problem with; just upgraded to CS6 which is in part why I also got LR 4.1)
-I don't know if this is a bug or a user issue: in grid view for a folder I select a photo (a virtual version, if that matters), then switch to loupe view:
why does the arrow key (L or R arrow) jump wildly to some distant photo [relative to grid view and relative to filmstrip at botto] and back, instead of just moving along to the next/adjacent photo beside the current photo?
Just tried this again and now it is jumping to the adjacent photo AND BACK: eg keep pressing R arrow and it just toggles between these two adjacent images:
now I must point out that these two photos have a black and white diamond.
But I have loupe view not Compare view. So what is going on?
I just noticed if I clicked on one of the diamonds in the filmstrip I seemed to have exited that funky mode. But then somehow got right back in it. Then noticed I had my second display turned on and turning that off also got me out of the funny mode. This is really confusing.
It appears the secondary display can have its own display mode: eg I've selected Loupe view, but once the secondary display was enabled, it showed Compare view despite my having already chosen loupe view, seems turning on that second display lets LR ignore you're set view...and you have to manually change that second display view also to Loupe to fix the issue.
I think the issue is that the diamonds where on effectively putting me in compare view against my will/my command and against the displayed view mode shown in the View menu (all because the 2nd display was enabled and decided to use its own view mode!!). Does that sound right? Is that a bug or something Adobe would call an undocumented feature or what???
    -brushes:
is there a way after I've applied one brush, then hit NEW to apply a second brush, for me to go back and further modify the first brush? EG add to or modify the strength of the first brush effect?
If so, I am not seeing where in the UI you would go to access that.
    -keywords:
I imported a keyword list and this shows up fine.
I had a photo and dragged several keywords from this keyword list onto the photo and then let go (when I dragged onto the photo a green circle with a plus sign showed, suggesting I was adding the keyword to the photo).
But the published photo on smugmug showed no keywords.
So I go back to LR and look for the keywords but don't see anything.
Where do an images assigned keywords show up? Is it in the box below I've highlighted in red? I tried again, and after dragging and dropping a keyword on an image, that box remains empty!
    Any help appreciated.
    -Colin

I'll answer the questions that I can
    how stable is LR generally?
Extremely stable for me and others, unstable for some
-I don't know if this is a bug or a user issue: in grid view for a folder I select a photo (a virtual version, if that matters), then switch to loupe view:
why does the arrow key (L or R arrow) jump wildly to some distant photo [relative to grid view and relative to filmstrip at botto] and back, instead of just moving along to the next/adjacent photo beside the current photo?
If you have multiple photos selected, for example one that is visible and one selected that you would have to scroll way down to see in the grid, the arrow keys in loupe mode will behave like this ... it will scroll left or right to the next selected photo, not the next photo
is there a way after I've applied one brush, then hit NEW to apply a second brush, for me to go back and further modify the first brush? EG add to or modify the strength of the first brush effect?
Sure. There is a "pin", actually a circular icon the represents the starting location of each brush. If you click on a pin, you can add additional edits or brush strokes
Depends on what you did. Publish to Smugmug, there is probably an option that removes metadata on export. This would be in the Export dialog box.
Go back to LR and the keywords aren't there ... did you by any chance re-import these photos?

  • 6509 and 4948 Switch Routing Question

We have a 6509 switch in our core that handles routing between dozens of VLANs with it's MSFC.  I'm connecting a remote Layer 3 4948 Switch to the 6509 via a Gigabit Fiber Link.
The 4948 will be connected to servers on a couple subnets as well as an alternate internet connection that I would like to have the 4948 route between locally but also send traffic to the VLAN's on the 6509.  We are using EIGRP as our internal routing protocol.
The question I'm running into is whether I can setup a trunk link between the 6509 and the 4948, VTP, and setup EIGRP to route only using one of the trunk VLANs and between the local VLANs (with SVIs) and routed ports or would it be best to just setup a routed port to connect to one VLAN on the 6509.
The advantage I see if the trunk idea is feasible is that I can allocate certain ports to be access ports and go back to the 6509 to route and not be affected by local routing on the 4948.  I absolutely do not want the 4948 to take over routing of my entire network as it will be on the edge and the 6509 is the core switch/router.
The advantage with using the 4948 connected to the 6509 as a routed port is that nothing on the 4948 will interface with the 6509 at Layer 2 and I can also keep VLAN's local to that switch.  On the downside though this would prevent me from setting up VLAN's that span across the network connected to the 6509 or other areas of the network.
My other question is whether I should use the same EIGRP AS# on the 4948 so it interacts and shares routes with the 6509 or use a separate AS# to keep things isolated.
Any thoughts or ideas on these questions?

    Thanks for the advice.
I would assume then I would simply assign one physical port on my 4948 with an IP address with the no switchport command and  then set the ip address configuration rather than assign a SVI identical to the subnet connected to on the 6509?
Then could I create a new VLAN on the 4948 for the servers with an SVI to point my servers to as their default gateway.  I could then use eigrp to get routes shared between the switches and across my network.  I'm assuming I could just assign the physical port on the 6509 to one of my vlans as an access port (old 6509 CATOS so I don't have the "no switchport" configuration option).
Also, will it cause any problems if I have the same vlan setup on both switches (even though I'm not trunking them) as long as I don't use the same ip address space on each?
    Does that sound about right?
    Any other thoughts or suggestions?
    Jim

  • Switching devices question

Currently in the Philippines on verizon's unlimited global data plan. my droid 2 global's screen went berserk and i was not able/willing to trust the postal service here to do the insurance routine. went out and bought an unlocked samsung galaxy tab for a replacement. Slapped my verizon sim in it and everything works fine so far. My question is when it comes to the billing side of the house with verizon: will my unlimited global plan for my motorola smart phone cover my usuage on the galaxy tablet? Dont need a couple thousand dollar surprise on my bill at the end of the month. Checked the My Verizon page but it still says I'm using my moto droid. phone, text, data usage still showing at 0 as usual.

    Dear Sivvy,
I understand the importance of preventing the potential of high international data usage charges on your account. If you had an unlimited global data plan, it would've been compatible only as an add-on smartphone feature on a line with an active voice and domestic data plan.
In order for the billing system to properly recognize a device change, the electronic serial number would need to be changed on your account. Changing the SIM will not allow the system to properly recognize a device change. Additionally, a tablet would not be compatible on a voice line; therefore, a plan change would be required, which would not allow you to maintain the existing global data plan.
I would not recommend that you continue to use the tablet on your line, as you are likely incurring international data charges because the existing plans are compatible with your previous phone only.

  • Switcher has question about DVD Label Printing

I recently switched from Windows to Mac Mini. I really have enjoyed the Mac experience. One thing I haven't found though is a way to print DVD labels via a Mac application or via Mac Office. Is there a way or must I get a third party app?

I use Discus. It is cheap (about $40), downloadable, and support just about every label printer and paper label available.
    See it here:
    http://www.magicmouse.com/hdiscusdetail.html
I advise against using paper labels on DVDs. Many have done it successfully, but there are enough horror stories, including destroyed DVD players (label comes loose, gums up the inside) to concern me. I've used the EZ CD Printer (an Epson C60 conversion), and the Epson R300, as well as the CD.DVD duplicator I use now, the Primera Bravo which works perfectly. I've made about 300 DVDs with that.

  • SCSI HARD DRIVE switch out QUESTION

I have a MAC G4 sawtooth and am going to switch out the SCSI hard drive, to a higher GB (from 23 to 147). Does anyone remember how many pins (68 or 80) does the G4 connector take? Sorry, it's been a while since I switched out hard drives.
    G4B SAWTOOTH   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If it's an OEM installation, your G4 has a 68-pin SCSI drive, and not an 80-pin SCA (SCSI) drive. If you purchased it secondhand, it could have either. Why don't you install a Parallel ATA (ATA-133) or Serial ATA (SATA-150) hard drive with the corresponding PCI controller card? You can get a lot more storage capacity for your money, than you can by going with an expensive SCSI drive. Check the weekly sale prices at your local electronics, computer, or office supply stores for bargains on hard drives. For a Mac-compatible PCI controller card, you'll probably have to purchase one from a dealer online. The lowest price for an ATA-133 controller card is consistently found here.

  • Cisco switch model question

Can someone tell what the -L,-S, or -E designation means on Cisco equipment? For example, looking at the

    Hi,
According to your description, your question is about Cisco hardware. Here is the Microsoft TechNet Forum and mainly focused on product Windows Server System. I recommend you to ask the hardware vendor(Cisco) for official support.
Or you may reference link which Dave Patrick’s provided.

  • UCS: switching/routing question

    Hi,
I am trying to get a definitive answer to how switching and routing occurs in the UCS environment described below. I am also looking for a"primer" on the functions and overall process the IC plays in the UC.
We currently have 2x6120 conected to 6 chassis'. Most of them are ESX hosts with multiple VM's, each with VM's in different vlans. We are using the 1000v instead of the regular VDS. The IC's connect to a 7K with vlan SVI's. So, if there is a vm in vlan A that needs to communicate with a VM in vlan B, what is the route the data would take? Would they goto the 7K since that's where the SVI is or is  the IC smart enough to make the switching decision?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Sudip,
Regarding introductions to the way the Fabric Interconnects work, check out the I/O Management section at the following page:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/ps10265/ucs_advantage_video_library.html
    M. Sean McGee does a pretty good series on fundamental aspects of the UCS System.
By the way, the fabric interconnects are usually abbreviated as FI, not IC.  This can help eliminate a little confusion when you talk to other UCS users.  :-)

  • Single line plan, how to switch and question about what rep told me.

I just got a contract (9/3) and have the "more everything plan" - I called Verizon Cust. Care (9/4) to inquire about the single line plan, I was told by Matthew that the single line plan price is in addition to the 40.00 line surcharge, so it would be $100.00 per month. Is this information accurate, or is it only $60.00 per month (as the website states for the ) plus taxes and fees?

The single line plan is only $60/month. There is no $40 line surcharge. You must be on the Singe Line Plan, though, not the More Everything Plan.
