Swithing to Mac and OSX - is it worth it for me?

I've been a Windows user for the longest time... ever since Dos became replaced with Windows 3.1 as that's what my dad used, all the way up to Windows XP, which is what I'm running now on my desktop computer, in dual-boot with SuSe Linux 10.1.
I've been using Linux for over 4 years now... and I like it much better than Windows... I don't like M$ for ethical reasons but aside from that I find that Windows offers me much less functionality, unless you add a dozen of 3d-party apps to it, and then still.
In the near future it'll be time to upgrade again, and I'm sort of building a business case as to which platform will allow me to be the most productive in my tasks. I consider myself to be a 'power user' (although not a 'geek') and I'd like to go beyond the limits of what I'm doing right now. Only Windows doesn't allow me to do that and Linux up to a certain extent.
The problem is, I have no clue what the Mac is like... it's like an alien landscape to me ATM.
So I'm just going to try to describe the most important tasks I have to use the computer for, and I apologize for the avalanche of information and questions:
1. Website Development, Maintenance, Image Editing
For my job, I do manage the content of my company's website, using a Html-Editor (Html-Kit). However, I'm thinking about starting a small business of my own developing websites for private persons and small companies.
I'm not gifted with godly drawing skills (quite the contrary...), but I use my digital camera to capture sights and elements and then processing (filters etc.) in Photoshop to obtain the graphic elements for my webpage templates. In this case, things I'd like to be able to do are auto-downloading of photographs, batch renaming a bunch of files (with accompanying previews), batch resize of image files, e.g. to quickly create thumbnails for a thumbnail gallery. I also need to scan articles and export to PDF, or create a document from scratch and export to PDF (currently using OpenOffice, Scribus). One other question: does Mac have good OCR software?
Another thing that I do, is film movies with a digital camera, and then resizing it, putting music to it, and optimize the filesize for website playback. I don't like wmv or .mov files (both require extra plugins) however, so I'd like something that can export to mpegs or avi's
I use file management and FTP a lot, so a site-wide abd advanced search&replace functionality would be a godsend, as would be the possibility to automate certain tasks, for example resizing pictures to a thumbnail format and immediately upload it to the proper folder on the webserver.
What I don't do yet, but will need if I'm going to run a business, is a program for creating Mockups, Sitemaps, draft versions of website screens or PDF's, ... something with a set of stencils and 'connectors' that you can use to quickly layout or draw something.
As for file management, I'd like to do things like auto-sorting files according to a certain filetype, sender (mail), certain keywords, ... have the browser automatically download certain filetypes to a particular folder (e.g. all movies from site X go to the 'movies' folder), easy drag&drop and cut&paste between different applications and folders, ...
As for my personal time, I like to surf the web, e-mail people (Gmail or one of my other webbased accounts, most enabled with pop access), watch anime movies, listen to music (just bought an ipod nano last week), ...
I also play the keyboard, I have a midi-enabled keyboard and I'd like to get into producing my own music... playing the keyboard to 'simulate' the different tracks, record my voice over it, ... just hobbyist in the beginning... all this digital music stuff is overwhelming enough as it is, but perhaps I could switch to something more professional later...
I also play games, but mostly adventure games...
So is a MAc for me you think?

Thank you for all the replies so far... workflow is indeed one thing that I find to be extremely un-intuitive with Windows XP. File management, searching for stuff, the general 'copy here'->'paste there'->'save as this'->'start over again' way of doing things...
iWeb, also included as part of iLife, is an easy web page creator, but it too has more robust alternatives. The Adobe and Macromedia products also go a long way to making web design, photo editing, and other graphical tasks easy on a Mac.
I'm very experienced with html, I'm getting to be quite experienced with CSS (although it seems that one ALWAYS holds more secrets no matter how much you think you know about it...). I prefer a html 'source' editor with advanced functionality (e.g. built-in FTP), or something like Dreamweaver. iWeb... doesn't really cut it for me. It's nice enough if you want to create a hobbyist site, but not if you want to work for clients, who will always be very demanding and ask "can you do it this [other] way?".
I'm probably one of the few Linux users with little to no programming or bash scripting skills... but if I could tie it in with technologies like Automator (which looks like a dream come true to me, if it actually works) then I'd be willing to learn more terminal stuff.
My music is 'hobbyist' quality (but well, you gotta start somewhere), but my web skills are much better...
I am pretty good at whipping up a website... it's just that I'm not a graphic artist so limited to using photographic elements and simple shapes, but that is sufficient. And I'm not a programmer, but I'm learning PHP and MySQL to close that gap.
The main things I want my computer to do, is to:
- save me time
- keep me organized
- help me to be creative
- offer a very deep level of integration between OS and applications.
This means having a good OS 'backend' (Windows hasn't, Linux is much better, OSX seems ... yummie) with powerful features, quality applications to help get the job done faster (and perhaps better) and offer good facilities for collecting, storing and searching for information. And an intuitive UI and way of working... As for the integration, I mean that for example, if I should use automator and/or Applescript, that there was a "FTP component" and "Request Page" component as well as the more 'general' ones (change desktop wallpaper-type stuff)...
I'm thinking of going to an Apple Center in the weekend, take Tiger for a spin...
And yes, the ability to run Windows (Boot Camp) does put me at ease a lot... although nowadays, at home, I rarely boot up Windows except for games or when I need to use Html-Kit.
But talking about games for a second, I'm kind of worried that most Macs 'only' come with X1600 graphics cards... especially for the notebooks since that won't be upgradeable. For example this year I bought a 6600GT 256MB video card for my PC (from a GF-4400MX) so I could run games like Oblivion and Dreamfall. I don't know what a X1600 compares too, but it didn't seem very powerful to me...
A Macbook seems purty... could take it anywhere. Or I could get myself a Mac Mini, I have a nice 19" screen sitting around that I don't use ATM. Of course I could hook up a Macbook to that as well. I do love my screenspace. But I'm also budget conscious, or at least trying to be. Maybe that you get what you pay for is true, but buying a new computer is still a big hole in your wallet... which is one of the reasons why I like to do some research beforehand.
What I also appreciate is:
- Community; Linux has a very good community. Mac OSX seems to be pretty good as well, judging from all the replies.
- Freedom. I'm not as strict as Stallman about it (duh ), but I like my stuff to be 'open': open protocols, open audio/video codecs, ... when buying my iPod I was being pragmatic, but if it would only have played AAC format I wouldn't have gotten it. Now I can get mp3's from emusic and play it, but I was a bit sorry it didn't support .ogg or even .flac (although last one is understandable for filesize reasons). I hate lock-in, which was the most important reason I tried out Linux anyway. That, and curiosity.
Oh boy, here I'm going again... gotta excuse me, it's just that I love "talking OS"
Which reminds me, did any of you see the new 'To Do' feature for Mail in Leopard (yes, I tried to do my homework... :p)? Anyone else wish you could also select a start and/or end date for the task? So that you could select a date and then pick 'Start Date' or 'End Date' from a picklist in the 'To Do' menu, which would fill it in the calendar.
Which reminds me, I'm starting to use Google's services (Gmail, Calendar, Event notifications, Address book) a lot... and I'm starting to actually care about portability of data... I'm making vcards for all contacts lying around, to put on my ipod... would be cool if I could 'sync' my Google calendar to my ipod... things like that.

MY wife has an Iphone 4  and I have a 5. To date we have used one apple account to manage music purchases/library. I updated ny phone to the new OS version and all her texting is showing up on my phone.  I understand if i create an apple account for her I will not see her texts. Recently we bought a Mac and created a new apple account for her. How do I synched her phone with new apple account and get access to the music library under my account on the new MAC laptop  before I update her phone to the new OS?
Going forward if I purchase music under my apple id and want her to have it on her device, how can I acheive that?

You can continue to share an Apple ID for purchases.
Sign her in to her new account here:
Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (Keep on Phone if you want to transfer contacts, calendars, etc...) then sign in with her new ID
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID > Sign out then in with new

I am purchasing this program for my son who attends George Washington High School: The College Academy in New York, New York. He is a sophomore and is interested in web design. I would like to know if he is eligible to use/activate the Creative Suite 6 Master Collection for Mac and Windows (Single User Educational License) FOR STUDENTS & EDUCATORS ONLY prior to my purchase.

Peru Bob makes a good point.  I just assumed the OP understood what the System requirements | Adobe Creative Suite 6 were.

    Hello, j2isgr8.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPad is disabled and not recognized in iTunes.  Here are the troubleshooting steps that I would recommend going through when experiencing this scenario.
Forgot passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled

Hello CS Community: I am about to renew my CS cloud subscription for one year. My current subscription is for one user for both Mac (and) PC. When I renew, how do I know I'm getting a subscription for both my MAC and my PC? It's not clear what is included in the purchase. I'm choosing the 49.00 a month package. Any insight would be much appreciated.

    Hi ShearLine,
The Creative Cloud subscription is not OS specific as it's licensed via your Adobe ID.
You can purchase a single subscription and use it on 2 machines irrespective of it being Windows or Mac.

  • Desktop Software Mac and OSX Lion

Does anyone have experience with DTS Mac after upgrading to OSX Lion? It took me ages and a complete reinstall to get it working under Snow Leopard, and I am a 'little' reluctant to have to go through that again.
Does upgrading affect the functionality of DTS mac?

Just download latest version from here

  • I'm using ADE with a Mac and have successfully downloaded library books for a few years; suddenly today the books are downloading to the Finder but do not show up in ADE so that they can be put on my Nook.

Is anyone suddenly having trouble using Adobe Digital Editions on a Mac to download library books?  I have been using this to load books on to my Nook and suddenly, out of nowhere, everything is downloading to the Finder app.  ADE pops up like it always has when I download from the library website, but the book does not show up there.
    Has something changed?

    1. iTunes won't offer cloud downloads for songs that it "thinks" are in your library, even if it "knows" the files are missing. If you've exhaustively searched for the missing files and there is no prospect of repair by restoring to them to their original locations, or connecting to new ones, then delete that tracks that display both the missing exclamation mark and are of media kind Purchased/Protected AAC audio file. Don't hide from iTunes in the cloud when asked, close iTunes, then reopen. You can download from the cloud links or iTunes Store > Quicklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer > All songs > Download all.
    2. Why? Not sure, perhaps 3rd party tools or accidental key presses combined with previously hidden warning messages when trying to organize the library. There is a hint that using the feature to downsample media as it is synced to a device may also be involved, though I've not replicated it. Whatever the reason a backup would protect your media.

  • HT204053 cannot sync calendar on my new ipad mini. my mac and macbook use a .me account for iCloud. How can I change this?

I cannot sync calendar on new ipad mini. My mac desktop and mac book have an old .me icloud account name. Cannot change that so how do I sync?

If you had a passcode set on your iPad your data should be safe.  The thief would have to force it into recovery mode and restore it in order to use it, which would completely erase it.
This shouldn't keep your daughter's device from accessing the iCloud account however.  If you can no longer sign into the account on iCloud.com from your computer, contact Apple support for assistance.

  • Is it possible for songs to be stored on an external hard drive and not my mac, and still play on iTunes? For example: those songs only show up when I plug in my hard drive. My mac has low memory, and I have a lot of songs.

Title! I'm a starting up aspiring dj/musician. Thank you!

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not  really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.

  • My bookmarks and my history don't save - I have a Mac and can't find the solution for Mac

The same problem I've seen in other forums, but the solution is always for PC and not Mac. My bookmarks don't save (or when I try to save a new one in the toolbar, everything that comes after it disappears) and history just doesn't work.
I am exceptionally computer illiterate. I really need some thorough step-by-step instructions on how to fix this.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • I can't download track names in iTunes for Mac and get a "User not registered for online use" error

I have a Macbook Pro 13, OS X 10.9.5, and iTunes 12. When I rip a CD it says it can’t find the track names online. When I tell it manually to fetch them it says "User not registered for online use."
On my other Macbook it works fine...

You need to delete two preferences files in your user library.  The full instructions can be compiled from various posts in this topic: user not registered for online use  I use an older Mac with easy access to the user library before Apple did a mother-knows-best move and hid it in recent OS versions.

  • Switched over to Mac and having MAJOR problems with Powerbook G4

    Hello,
I'n the interest of not having to post many threads and to save bandwidth I will post my problems on one single thread so that you can address each issue.
    1) The adapter cord that plugs in to my Powerbook usually has a bright "yellow" light on the endge of the cord when plugged in. Recently the color changed to bright "orange" should I be concerned and is this a sign of something bad to come?
    2) When I press the power button "sometimes" the screen goes grey. I press the button, hear the chime, screen goes grey with a world logo that keeps flashing at limbo preventing me from getting in to the computer system. Why is this happening and how do I correct it?
    3) Select the Apple Icon on the top and go to Mac OSx software, IE Explorer loads and then FREEZES evertything on the system. It's as though it's crashing from the onset.
    4) At any given time while I'm searching through files or surfing the net a ridiculous littl ball appears in the shape of a rainbow that essentially locks my ENTIRE SYSTEM. I cannot click on any Icon or do much of anything. Forced to sit and helplessly look at this stupid object with no directive as to what to do. I can't even shut down my system in safe mode because it won't let me access the Apple Icon on the top menu. At last resort I have to HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON for 10 seconds just to shut it down.
    5) How can you retrieve files deleted by accident or do a system restore like you can in Windows? No disks came with my computer so I'm hoping that there is a button to click that can reverse actions and bring back system to an earlier time. I'm sure that Apple must have thought about this as people are going to make many mistakes and will need immediate and non complex recourse in restoring files and the system in general. I changed Admin privilidges to myself and deleted the former Admin of my system, thinking that it would only delete the "name" but instead I suspect that the system deleted 5GB of files that the former Admin installed? Not sure. I have nothing in my trash can and the deleted files under former Admin are in the form of an "image" on my hard disk. I tried to open the deleted file by clicking on the Icon and it's telling me "DISK IMAGE FAILED TO MOUNT no mountable file system. This is very frustrating as I need to see what files have been deleted and restore those that I need. I have OFFICE MAC X suite that now I can't locate and yesterday I downloaded the Opera browser and turned on the Mac this morning only to find that it to is gone.
Now granted Windows is a headache in itself but I never imagined that I would be going through all this madness with a Mac. Everyone spoke so highly of them and I'm finding out different from first hand experience. Hopefully, you can help me resolve the above issues as I'm feeling very frustrated with this computer.

    Hi again,
You definitely need to purchase some replacement disks for your computer. Just from hard shutdowns via the powerbutton can do system file damage and you need to Repair Dick using the install disk.
From your reply I would suggest obtaining a good Mac OSX users book such a one of the David Pogue books etc. You can find any number of them online for your OS. The learning of the Mac OS can be somewhat confusing for a switcher from PC and Microsoft OS's. I was somewhat lucky in that when I first started using computers I learned on a Mac so I never had any relearning curve to deal with. I think you will find if you stick with your Mac and OSX that you will learn to love it compared to PC's.
I can assure you that Apple did not drop the ball when it came to the PowerBooks as evident by it being one of the most succesful of all Mac notebook computers.....there are many many happy users still of PowerBooks. There is a specific forum here in Discussions for Powerbook computers that may help you with certain issues.
re: "I went ahead and downloaded my favorite browser Opera for the second time, since it disappeared yesterday after I restarted my machine. Hopefully, I will find it on the Doc the next time I start my system."
Once you download an app to your Mac you will need to place it in your HD/Applications folder. From there you can simply drag it's alias to the Dock or click open the app and then when the icon appears in the Dock click on its icon in the Dock once and hold and from its pop up contextual menu select "Keep In Dock". Applications do not automatically stay in the Dock.
I am not sure I follow your description of the problem of the lost 5GB of files that were on some sort of Disk Image and how you are trying to retrieve them for me to be able to help. If you have deleted the files they are gone on your computer and you will need to use a third party software to recover them (DataRescue is one such utility but these are expensive softwares and can have varying results with file recovery). If you know the name of any of the missing files you can do a search using the finders search field (double click on your HD icon and then use its search field upper right) to make sure that the files are indeed not on your HD anymore.
I also wanted to suggest when using the command +option + escape key combination to force quit a process sometimes may take a couple or a few tries to get it to work sometimes (at least that has been my experience). Did you read through Dr. Smoke's FAQ concerning the SBBOD?
In the end you will need to learn common system maintenance for your OS to function properly such as Repairing Permissions via Disk Utility and running the cron maintenance (daily, weekly and monthly) tasks which can be done manually or by downloading a third party freeware utility such as MacJanitor to help do this easily. One of the biggest reasons to have your install disks is this is how you will need to repair the disk for system corruption among other problems. This can only be done with OS 10.3.9 by using the install disk and booting to its DiskUtility.
I hope these tips help a little more and do post back with further questions,
