SWOD after receiving an IM, need to restart Mac

Hello,
We have a workstation with Mac OS X v10.5.5 and the iChat version is 4.0.5. I have been told that iChat at this workstation will display a SWOD when incoming IMs are received, yet the incoming IM is never displayed. We know this much because we have asked people in our office if and when they have sent IMs to this user, and their responses correlate to what we are observing. Not every single incoming IM will result in a SWOD, but those that do start a significant downward spiral for the stability of the Mac.
I originally turned off the firewall, but that did not resolve the issue. I then deleted the iChat preference files in ~/Library/Preferences, but that did not resolve the issue either. Yesterday, I used Pacifist to reinstall iChat from the OS X v10.5.4 Leopard DVD, and I have been told that iChat presented the SWOD once today.
When these iChat SWODs occur, force quitting iChat does little good. Whatever is causing iChat to SWOD also affects other parts of the system. Even copying files in the Finder will fail after iChat SWODs. The only resolution to the situation is to restart the Mac. Unfortunately, this creates a situation where the user of this workstation needs a PowerBook just to iChat with people, as the risk of the computer falling into this effectively useless state is too great.
If anyone has experienced this problem, or can offer any suggestions on how to resolve it, I would appreciate it. At this point I am thinking my only course of action is to reinstall Leopard clean and hope the problem does not resurface. I would prefer to have proof that a clean install would solve the problem, rather than budget a day for this process and hope it is resolved. I suppose I could update to Mac OS X v10.5.7 first, but the release notes for v10.5.6 and v10.5.7 do not list fixes that match the description of what I am observing.
Thanks for reading!

This isn't guaranteed to show you anything useful, but those users might leave the Activity Monitor utility running with "All Processes" selected, the list ordered by CPU usage, and the lower CPU tab selected. When the problem arises, that at least could verify whether it's iChat that's spinning its wheels or something else.

  • I have iMac 27.  After Mountain Lion install, my trackpad freezes partially after deep sleep and need to restart to get it working again.  anyone with same issue?

I have an iMac 27 and installed Mountain Lion last week.  Since then, after a deep overnight sleep, certain of my trackpad functions are frozen after i wake the Mac.  i need to restart the computer in order to get the trackpad fully functional.  Anyone with same issue or ideas?

I'm having the exact same issue with Mountain Lion on my 2008 17" MacBook Pro. I've just tried the SMC reset, so we'll see how that does. The problem was intermittent, occuring not after every wake--from-sleep, but every few.
Interestingly, my 2007 17" MacBook Pro is also running Mountain Lion (the oldest MacBook Pro than can!), and hasn't had this problem at all.

  • 30" LCD Cinema display - sporadically blanks out, need to restart Mac Pro

2007 vintage 30" LCD Cinema HD display running off a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon X1900 XT. Was Mac OS 10.5.latest, just upgraded to 10.6.4 with no effect on the problem.
This has happened perhaps 8 or 10 times over the last few months, and IIRC always when I'm playing WoW. I know WoW heats up my Pro more than anything else because I can hear the cooling fans speeding up when I load and play it.
The symptom is the screen goes totally black. The little white light down the bottom-right of the display comes on. If I push the power button on the display the white light goes bright, but there's no other reaction. The capslock light on the keyboard still reacts so I know I don't have a total system hang.
I shut down the whole Mac Pro by holding in its On button for 10 seconds, and it powers down as normal. But the white light on the display is still on, and I have to disconnect the power from the display so the white light goes off; only then I turn the Pro back on and all is well again.
The screen always gets very warm to the touch - I can hold my hand on it OK so it's not burning hot but it still seems too hot to me. Is this normal for this screen? It seems a little odd there are no cooling vents if so. Having just restarted iStat Pro says Mac HD (I think that's the display) is 46c, CPUs and everything else 40c or below. It is coming on for summer here but today is not hot, iStat says ambient is 23c.
So what am I asking for? I guess some sort of validation of my issue, advice, and where I should start diagnosis - display, video, display power, the Mac itself ... or should I just get Apple out here? I do have Apple Care.
    Thanks all.

And it's happened twice since then, both while playing WoW. After the latest reboot my temps are 49c for display, 45c and 48c for CPUs. The Mac has been on for over 6 hours before I ran up Wow with no problem, in Wow for maybe 5 minutes and there it goes.
The latest Mac updates to iTunes 10.1 and OS 10.6.5 were applied a few hours ago, well before this latest crash.
My best guess is that either some component has gone temperature-intolerant that didn't used to be, or there is something in the latest WoW version that is triggering some hardware, driver or OS problem. I really don't have much of an idea where to go now. Any suggestions?

  • Need to restart mac

I use a mac with OS X 10.6.8. In the past two days it has prompt me to shut down and restart 5 times, how do I figure out what's causing it?

If you got a multi-language window telling you to restart then you had a kernel panic. See Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic. Copy the log entry for your most recent panic and paste it in a reply here.

  • After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I get "you need to restart" messages!

After upgrading, I've gotten the "you need to restart" messages, forcing me to push down on the Power button once in a while. Sometimes I can use the computer for a whole day without getting it, but sometimes I get it 4-6 times a day. This is usually when I am using Firefox (with multiple saved tabs). I've updated the two plug-ins I have in Firefox, and I've downloaded all the software updates. Here is the error report. Can anyone please help? Thank you!

Spoke too soon. It just happened when I was buying a song from iTunes (I had just clicked on "buy this song") and the restart screen came up. But Firefox was running in the background (after I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling it). Any help appreciated. Thank you! Here's the log:

  • My Imac says "you need to restart your computer" after logging out and click on sleep. 10.6.8?

My Imac recently gives a message "you need to restart your computer"  after logging out and clicking "sleep".  After a few seconds, gray screeen will roll down and give that messasge.  I disconnected  USB cable from my  printer.  Today,  after turning it on,  the log in screen showed then after 2 seconds the gray screen rolled down again and prompted "you need to restart the computer". I've read the apple communities about kernel panics but to no success. I have a 10.6.8, 2.7 ghz, 4GB.  This is the error that showed which I reported to apple mutiple times already.

What is going on with this error?

It hasn't been acting up since I:
    1) Since I unplug my all in one printer with wifi (Hewlett Packard).  I barely use the printer and it keeps cleaning out the jets and wasting my **** ink.  Plus it'll do a loud self test @ 3:00 in the morning & by this time, I pulled my baseball bat from under the bed and ready to smash some skulls in the office room thinking its a burglar.
But seriously it stop doing it.
This is a late reply but confirmed after 7 months.
Note:  I shut down instead of sleep my Imac now because I hardly use it.

  • Please help! My mac randomly restarted straight after a shutdown. As it restarted and loaded to desktop, I received an 'Anonymous UUID' error. This is the first time that it's happened!

Hey guys! I was wondering if you could help me with this 'Anonymous UUID' thing? As I've only had this mac for just over a month, I was a little frightened to think that I may have done something wrong to receive a crash report such as this? Here is the report that I received (Without the UUID):

    Hello guys,
i need help, my iMac got insane after a light shutdown, the first thing that happened is that my sister's account dissapeared, It was deleted
I suspect that teh directory services entry for that account got corrupted but the account is still basically there. is the home directory present in the /Users folder?
, after this I started having issues with Mac OS X, when I pressed "empty Trash", nothing happened, when I clicked again, Finder said that is was being emptied, but nothing showed up, the only way i found to emptying it, was through Terminal, after this, my account is not recognized as an Admin, in System Preferences is labeled as Admin, but my rights, doesn't look as it, when i try to create again my sister's account, I cant because when I click the Lock, for unlocking the settings, it says Authenticating... and then nothing happens the Finder window that asks me my password doesn't show up, this happens with every file or folder that I try to Unlock Authenticating... and the nothing, I hope you guys can help, this is making me mad ;(
sounds like a number of system files got hosed. i would recommend an archive and install.

Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities/, run these two commands (copy & paste each one separately and hit the return key):
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
at the Password: prompt, type in your admin password, carefully since nothing displays on the screen, and hit the return key. These should unlock your drives. You might have to restart.

After receiving a photo in a text message, my I Phone 3GS screen is now fuzzy over 3/4 of the screen. I deleted the photos, did a restore of the phone, did a restart of the phone and still the screen has the fuzz over 3/4 of it.
Anyone ever experienced this problem and know how to fix it?
    Thank you for your help.
    James

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. And they backed up my old Iphone 4, but were not able to get anything to load back onto my new phone. So, I lost pretty much everything. But over time, some of my contacts have started showing up, although i am still missing over 800 of them.

  • "You need to restart your computer....." message just after starting snow leopard instalation on clean disk

    Dear All
I try to install snow leopard on clean disk of my mac pro but after some seconds of processing, before any menu appears I get error message, saying I need to restart computer. I tried all suggestions I could find, but nothing is working. Would you advise please, what may be the problem cause?
    Appreciate any help.
    Best Regards
    Bartosz

You need to be running 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 to get the Mac App store.
Access to the Mac App Store would let you download (or re-download) 10.7.
So, YES, a retail 10.6 DVD would solve the problem.
    Do you have another Mac?
There are a few more things you could do using another Mac:
    1) you could hook up another Mac in FireWire target disk mode, and clone its drive onto yours. That could get you going IF the version installed on that other Mac is a separatley Purchased version.
    2) You could copy the Recovery_HD from a Mac with a separately Purchased version of 10.7, and then use it to download a copy from the Mac App store.

  • After upgrading from tiger to snow leopard i get you need to restart computer when i get done with something

After upgrading my operating system, after being on different pages for sometime, i get a shaded that comes down and says i need to restart my computer then tells me to send in error report when it reboots....what do i do

This is called a Kernel panic.
    See here for possible solutions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
Did you do anything else apart from ungrading OS?
    Did you add memory?
Bad or not well seated memory modules are often a cause of kernel panic

  • Blue screen keeps popping up after "you need to restart" message

While I was rendering a movie in After Effects, the screen turned black with the message "you need to restart your computer". So I did. But after the restart nothing will load. So in the upper right corner the only thing there is the magnifying glass (so no time, airport etc). If I want to start something (like Chrome or whatever) it loads and a few seconds after that a blue screen pops up and than the app is closes again... If I do nothing a blue screen keeps popping up also (guess something wants to start and gets shut down again).
I tried the apple hardware test (extended) and it said everything was ok. I also disconnected everything from my iMac, no help. Then I tried reinstalling OS X, problem was still there. I also repaired disk and permissions.
So I really don't know what to do now, hope you can help.

    that was a [_*Kernel Panic*_|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html]
try booting into _*safe mode*_. if your Mac boots into safe mode, repair permissions while in it, then reboot normally.

You are experiencing a Kernel Panic as seen and described in Apple doc. HT1392. If not, disregard.
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.
